millions

Jim Spiewak, NBC 2 News, May 13, 2013, Pet Overpopulation costs taxpayers
According to the American Humane Society
article on Pet Overpopulation 35% of
pet owners refuseto spay or neuter their
animals
Causes
• Irresponsible Breeding – not spaying and neutering pets
• Purchasing pets instead of adopting from shelters
Solutions
• Regulate individual breeders and limit how many pets they can breed and sell each year
• Encourage others to adopt pets from local animal shelters
• Tax credit for those that adopt a pet
According to the audience analysis survey, 50% were unsure whether pet overpopulation
is a problem.
I not only hope that you now realize there is a problem but that you will also help reduce the
problem.
Bear
You can help control the pet population by
• Spaying or neutering your animals and encouraging others to do so
• Spreading the word about the high number of family pets euthanized each year
• Encouraging people to adopt from a shelter and not from a breeder
