1. When a bee returns to its hive laden down with nectar, pollen and water, it flies at 12 miles per hour although at night most bees remain motionless to preserve energy (they don’t actually sleep). If the bee had to fly 3 miles to its hive, how long would that take?

2. The population of a bumble bee nest is 150 bees. In Victorian times, the bumble bee was called a ‘humble bee.’ If a garden had 6 bumble bee nests in it, how many bees would there be in total?

3. Mating drones will fly up to 30mtrs above ground to find a queen and can go much higher if warm rising thermal air carries them so. On this particular day, the thermals enabled the drone to fly 25% higher. How high will the drone fly?

4. A typical second hand hive in which to keep your own bees costs £60 although you would have to spend some money on tools and clothes too. If I have £500, how many hives could I buy? Would I have any money left over?

5. A hive has 1000 bees living in it until pesticides have been used and the bees are being poisoned. 325 bodies have been found after the first spray, a further 401 have died after the second spray because the farmer thought the first spray hadn’t worked so he decided to do it again. How many bees remain?
