Meet Our Newest Trainer:

Dr. Janis Reed

Dr. Janis Reed earned a BS, an MS and a Ph.D. all from Texas A&M University in Entomology. She joined the Agricultural and Environmental Safety unit in 2013. Prior to working for Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, she was the technical director for a large pest management company where her work was focused on applicator training and safety. During her time in the industry, Janis helped to developed protocols to control termites, bed bugs, tawny crazy ants, argentine ants, ghost ants, fabric pests, and others. She field tested new and experimen-tal use pesticides while in the review process with the EPA and selected pesticide products for use. Her research and specializa-tion focus is on urban pest ants, bait preferences, and general pest management.

Janis is an active member of the Entomological Society of Amer-ica, a Board Certified Entomologist, and has been a licensed pes-ticide applicator since 2000 in pest control, termite control, lawn and ornamental pest control, and weed control.

Lawn and ornamental pest control represents a very large portion of urban pesticide use. As urban areas continue to expand and homeowners continue to desire attractive lawns and landscapes, the use of pesticides to control plant pests has continued to grow. The use of pesticides to control insects and diseases in home and other landscapes is a serious business, one that requires a wide knowledge of the pests as well as some understanding of pesticides and their proper use.

This 8 hour course is designed to satisfy the SPCS Apprentice Training Requirements as specified in Section 7.133 (h) (2) “8 hours of classroom training in each category in which the apprentice is to provide pest control services”. The $100.00 course can also be taken by other SPCS applicators to increase their knowledge in the subject area.
