The PESGB was established in 1964 by a group of likeminded professionals keen to create a community of geoscientists for networking and sharing ideas. Over 50 years on we have maintained those founding principles. We have a membership of over 6000 individuals, active in all six continents and have established a number of flagship events where professionals network, share technical excellence, and discuss the latest developments. These events include PETEX, PROSPEX and a vast array of field trips, courses, seminars and conferences. As part of our charitable objective we have a growing programme of grants and outreach projects. We have donated over £2m supporting various educational projects including; school-based education, university support and public engagement, with the aim of raising the profile and impact of geoscience. Our focus on the future has seen the PESGB become the largest sponsor of Geoscience MSc’s in the UK. We have also established a public annual lecture programme designed to promote geology and earth science which has featured speakers including Sir Tony Robinson, Hugh Dennis, Dallas Campbell and Professor Iain Stewart. As we work to promote our industry, PESGB has created partnerships with other professional societies and organisations to inform and challenge Government policy, share knowledge and support the aspirations of our members.

AberdeenThis is the largest of the branches. It holds monthly evening lectures (except July). IrelandThe Irish branch holds approximately three lecture meetings a year. Lectures are held at the Geological Survey of Ireland in Beggars Bush, Dublin 4 and are followed by drinks and chat at a local hostelry. The lectures are free to students and PESGB members.

SurreyThe Surrey branch meets on the third Wednesday of every odd month at The White House pub in Guildford, starting at 6pm. The meeting is completely informal and has no technical speaker content, being purely a meeting to make and renew contacts within the oil industry. Generally we get 30 to 40+ people during the evening so it has proved to be a good focus for networking.

Cumberland & the Lake DistrictThe group is hoping to arrange meetings in the future in the Cumberland area. If you are interested in helping to organise a meeting or wish to sponsor an event, please get in touch with PESGB office.

Cotswold & WesternThe group is hoping to arrange meetings in the future in the Cheltenham/ Gloucester area. If you are interested in helping to organise a meeting or wish to sponsor an event, please get in touch with PESGB office.

Interest Group meeting was a one-day event held in 1998 on West Africa

6 In order to build on the success of our Africa SIG and establish our conference as an annual event, a link with the Houston Geological Society was proposed whereby the venue would alternate annually between London and Houston

6 Formed in 1999 by Dr Paul Duller in long-term collaboration with Duncan McKay

6 Successful series of bi-annual 2-day conferences (Dec 1999-2007) in collaboration with the Geological Society’s Geoscience Information Group

6 Membership focused and inclusive

6 The Geophysics Special Interest Group of the PESGB exists to promote the understanding and exchange of knowledge within the Society’s membership of all aspects of surface and subsurface geophysical methods including seismic, gravity, magnetic and electromagnetic

6 Approximately thirty six percent of the Societies membership are geophysicists. SIG aims to hold where possible an annual seminar to serve these needs and interests

The YP group was established in 2010 specifically for those members with less than 10 years experience in the oil and gas industry. Run by Young Professionals for young professionals, the group supports and develops a strong network within the larger petroleum geosciences community.

With committee’s based both in London and Aberdeen the YPs deliver multiple events every year, actively providing opportunities for the YPs at the beating heart of the industry.

From lectures and training courses to mentoring, networking evenings and university sponsorship, the PESGB YPs do it all...

Lectures and SeminarsThe committee members of Aberdeen and London work hard to bring you lectures and intimate seminars from industry leaders and experts. An annual highlight is the House of Commons debate. Hosted by the YPs, industry leaders and politicians lock swords to discuss the challenges and tribulations facing our industry at the time.

Undergraduate Mapping SponsorshipThis initiative provides three students from around 20 of the UK’s top geoscience universities with financial support when undertaking their compulsory mapping projects. The most deserving students are awarded £100 each to help with travel and accommodation during their respective projects.

PESGB YP Mentoring SchemeYoung Professional members use their mentor for career advice or planning, technical development, life experience (working in different countries, etc.) and general support. If you would like to find out more or sign up to the PESGB YP Mentoring scheme, please email [email protected]

Socials, Fieldtrips and Networking EventsBeing Young and Professional it can’t all be hard work and no play! The PESGB YPs are very proud of their social calendar and the networking opportunities they provide. They have even found a way to mix geology and beer in their annual GeoPub Tour led by Bob Leppard of Leppard Sedimentology. Recent highlights have also included a geology themed movie evening showing a private screening of The Core to an audience of PESGB YPs.

Why not get involved in your industry, meet with friends and colleagues, but most of all have fun with the PESGB YPs!

PROSPEX is a two day exhibition with a parallel speaker programme featuring the highly popular ‘Prospects to Go’ sessions.

The aim of PROSPEX is to provide a venue for announced “Promote Licensees” and oil and gas companies to market prospects and meet with potential investors to facilitate the “deal making” process.

We also offer a contextual overview of licensing activities and related topics for the UKCS and surrounding areas.PROSPEX launched in 2003, entitled “Licence to Sell”, and has been cohosted by the PESGB and Oil & Gas Authority (formerly DECC) since then.

Held in the Business Design Centre, Islington, London, PROSPEX has grown to occupy the largest hall available.
