From: Hunter Waneck [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, January 29, 2018 11:00 AMTo: Lowery Jr, Lee L <[email protected]>Subject: RE: Alpine E.I.T. Search

Good morning Dr. Lowery –

Well darn, looks like I missed the career fair last week, but if you could post this that would be greatly appreciated:

I’m Texas A&M class of 2010, whoop! I’m a Civil Engineering Project Manager here at Alpine Engineering & Construction. Our website can be found below my signature line. We will take resumes for both Engineering or Construction degrees.

My current focus is to hire an E.I.T.. With that said, I’ll give a general synopsis of the work we do, bullet point reasons as to why I enjoy working for Alpine and what exactly we’re looking for in a New Hire.

COMPANY BACKGROUND

Alpine is ~7-8 years old, and is a relatively small, tight niched company but have doubled in size in the past year.

We deliver full construction phase and engineering design services for projects ranging from small residential improvements to large commercial/industrial developments.

COMPANY HIGHLIGHTS I thoroughly enjoy working for Alpine because we’re like family here. The Owners genuinely care

about their employees and want to see everyone succeed. With a large variation in project scopes, there is great opportunity here to grow knowledge

within all aspects of the Civil Industry and uniquely to our company, get to see how the construction side of things are run as well.

Being that we are a smaller company, the E.I.T. will greatly benefit with much more hands on interaction and direct training than you may see at a larger company.

EXPECTATIONS

Hydraulics & hydrology is key to all Civil Engineering practices and would like applicants to have at least general knowledge of those topics.

Experience in AutoCAD would also be helpful, but can be learned. An individual who is eager to get their hands on everything and learn more about the industry

and ultimately grow within the company.

Feel free to contact me directly by phone or e-mail to answer any questions and don’t forget to send me your resumes!

THANKS.

Hello Dr. Lowery,

I hope you are doing well. My name is Pankaj Deshmukh. I graduated from Texas A&M in Fall ’10 with a masters in Structural Engineering. I am working as a section manager of engineering at a lattice tower consulting firm, ASEC Inc. Right now we have five aggies on our team and they are all doing really good. We are currently looking to hire three more aggies this year. Previously you have been a great resource in helping us reach out to the current students, and I was wondering if could help us out this time as well. Let me know and I will forward you our company information and job description.

Laura and Dr. Lowery,

Hello! I hope you both are doing well. I graduated in December with my MEng in civil / environmental and back in May 2016 for undergrad in civil. I moved out to Vero Beach, FL with fellow Aggie Cheyenne Stowers in May and began working for the county. I love living out here next to the beach but I do miss having other Aggies around. I would love to try to get more people out here! 😉We have several civil engineering jobs for the county. The Public Works department said that they have several beach restoration projects and need a coastal engineer. They also just posted a job for a Traffic Engineer. For those people that have a bit more experience, they're also looking for a Project Engineer for land development and a Construction Project Manager. All of these jobs can be found on our website: https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/indianriver?page=1

I know that moving to a small town and working for the government is not an ideal job for a new graduate but I have absolutely love living on the beach and the environment in the office is pretty laid back. I did internships in 3 different consulting firms and I have enjoyed working for the county more than any of those jobs.

There are several benefits to living and working in a small county such as: small commute times (mine is 5 minutes), greater opportunity to work all aspects of an engineering project, low cost of living, non-touristy beaches, great health benefits. I could go on!

If anyone has any questions, my information is below. Thanks for your time!

Howdy Dr. Lowery,

I'm a recent graduate, and I remember getting your emails about companies that are hiring. I wanted to let you know that TXDOT's Dallas District will be at the engineering career fair and is looking to hire full-time positions.

I currently work for TXDOT as an EA (Engineering Assistant), which is the entry level position for an engineer. All EAs participate in the EA rotation program, which is designed to provide 2 years experience in roadway design, 1.5 years experience in construction, and 6 months in traffic and signals, while also providing training for the PE exam. I didn't know anything about this program before interviewing with TXDOT, so I want to spread the word. For those looking to gain a variety of experience early on, TXDOT could be a great fit.

Also, a transportation specialty is not necessary. I have a structural M.E., and my coworkers have a variety of backgrounds, including general civil, construction, geotech, and ocean.

There are a lot of great benefits to working in the public sector, but the rotation program is what sold it for me. If you think this information is useful, please feel free to share to undergrad or graduate students.

Thanks and gig 'em,

9/28/18Howdy Dr. Lowery,

Our Fairbanks office has an entry level engineering position advertised for the next few weeks. Feel free to distribute to upcoming Civil grads. I believe they can hold the position up to 12 months for the selected candidate. This position is entry level in highway design for the State of Alaska and located in Fairbanks (it gets cold!). This is not my office but I do work alongside them for Northern region bridge projects and I can vouch that they are some of the brighter “roadway engineers” in the State. If your students have any generic “Alaska type questions” feel free to forward along my contact info. I can also vaguely speak of the type of work they may be performing but if they wanting specifics then the correct contact person is listed on the job posting.

Dear Lee:

I hope that all is well with you. For your convenience, I am writing this above our previous email exchange.

We have just lost one of our engineering/surveying techs (GIS degree) so we are back in the market for an employee. Presently we have four employees plus a couple of contract employees (mostly surveying). We are looking for someone who ideally has some or all of the following experience.

1. CAD--particularly ACAD Civil 3D.2. Surveying experience (both land survey, topographic, and construction staking3. Engineering Design

Obviously an engineering degree supports better future opportunities but we will consider any applicant, particularly in regards to their aptitude, attitude, willingness to work and learn, and ability to work with others. We also may be able to work with someone on a specialized schedule.

Presently we are doing engineering primarily in commercial development and subdivisions but our plans are to begin marketing in the public sector (an area in which I have over twenty years’ experience). We are also building up our surveying department. I would be interested in the right person whether they are someone about to graduate or a graduate with some experience. I don't know if you ever get inquiries from past graduates but thought I would mention that as well.

Thank you very much for any assistance you can provide.

Sincerely,

Jimmy Griffith '73James W. Griffith, P.E., RPLSGriffith Consulting4000 Sendero Springs DriveRound Rock, Texas512-626-0023Engineering Firm No. F-10052

From previous communication:

Just a bit of background - after graduation from A&M in 1973 (BSCE) I joined our family firm, Everett Griffith, Jr. & Associates, Inc. and became the head of the firm two years later (1975) when my dad died. We grew from 12 employees at that time to 50 employees in 1983. That firm continues in Lufkin today but I moved my family to Round Rock in 1991 to pursue a Ph. D. with the hope of returning to A&M to teach. However, after finishing the M.S. it became obvious that I needed to return to the work place in order to put my four kids through college. I worked in the area of my masters work--Supercritical Water Oxidation--until 2002 (co-authored four patents) and then returned to more traditional Civil Engineering. I started the present firm in 2007 (perfect timing for the economic storm in 2008 and beyond). The firm survived and is now thriving.

We use AutoCad Civil 3D and Storm and Sanitary Analyis as the basic software in our design as well as most all of the other typical software, and we can train a young engineer in full computerized design. I would prefer if someone had some experience with CAD design and/or

construction or surveying, but a willing mind and youthful energy should be adequate to allow a young engineer to become productive in a reasonable time frame.

We would expect to provide typical pay and benefits associated with the engineer's education and experience. I would appreciate very much your assistance in allowing us to know of any engineers who might be interested in this position. As noted below, we are located in Round Rock, Tx. and have projects throughout central Texas as well as a few in South Texas.

Thank you very much for your consideration of this request.

Sincerely,

Jimmy Griffith '73
