The City is again participating in Garage Sale Trail on October 24 – a national sustainability event promoting reuse, and a treasure trove for shoppers seeking bargains! Forrest Place will host pop-up op shops on the day, where charities will sell items collected from a sea container in the Murray Street Mall.

In November and December, as the City celebrates six weeks of colour and light during the Festival of Christmas, the CBD is the best place for Christmas shopping, and is the state’s leading destination for all your Boxing Day and post-Christmas sale shopping.

Welcome to PERTH CITY magazine

City slickersWe've gone to another level to produce the spring/summer issue of the new look Perth City Style magazine – and not just in terms of the content and stories we're including. The city is thriving from the sky down to the ground, thanks to its rooftop bars, bustling stores and funky basement small bars.

Every week it feels like a new venture opens up, so much so that it’s a full-time job keeping up with it all. STYLE How does it feel to be the face of TPFF 2015?TIAH I’m flattered, especially because when I started out modelling as a teenager my first few shows were for Perth Fashion Festival.STYLE You live in the States these days, but do you have a favourite Perth designer? What do you like about his/her style?TIAH That would have to be Jaime Lee Major. Her pieces are literally works of art, completely opulent and surreal. She’s world class, a total original.

STYLE What do you think defines Perth/WA style?TIAH I’m not sure, but what I remember from living there was that as the city is quite geographically isolated, Perth people seemed to build their own unique looks, because they're not too influenced by what everyone else is doing. STYLE What have been your favourite brands that you’ve worked with so far?TIAH Valentino and Armani, they are the real deal, true icons. I also liked

working with Pat Fields because she’s been such a huge pop culture influence and is such an individual. I enjoy working for the people that make the trends, even when at the time everyone thinks they’re crazy, rather than just the people who regurgitate them.STYLE Whose style do you covet?TIAH Michelle Pfeiffer as Elvira in Scarface and Dominique Swain as Lolita in the ,97 film based on the novel of the same name – I’m more inspired by fictional characters than, say, celebrities. FOR SIX YEARS, fashion blogger Vicky Sofield has had her finger firmly on the pulse of fashion in the city as the founding editor of popular fashion blog, The Fashion Catalyst.

Vicky is also the City of Perth’s official fashion blogger so we took the opportunity to ask her a few questions about Perth style and where she likes to spend her time in the city.Where’s your favourite place to shop in Perth city? I love the CBD – it’s so easy to shop during my lunch break and after work before heading back home to Kings Park. What Spring/Summer '15 trend are you most excited by? Painterly prints and denim – these will both be big, with a feminine twist.Do you have a favourite part of the city for eating and drinking? I love Northbridge, and if I’m out after dark in the wee, small hours, there’s no better place to stop for a refuel than Darlings Supper Club on Lake Street. Do you have a go-to store for back to work basics? I love a variety of stores and frequent Karen Millen, SABA, Witchery, Periscope, Wittner, David Lawrence and Portmans the most.What do you think the must-have colour will be for this season? I believe in sticking to what colour suits you best so if you apply that to a painterly printed dress or suit then you will be on trend this season. That said, if you’re going for block colours then I love crisp whites, denim blues and flaming crimson reds for SS ‘15.What do you think defines Perth style? Perth style to me is defined by individuality and innovation. As Coco Chanel once said: “The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.”What’s your favourite summer outfit for shopping in the city? A lovely summer dress with flats or heels and/or my trusty Jeanswest jeans with a structured blouse or striped tee.

Presented by the City of Perth 26 January

Australia’s largest community celebration with events including free concerts, activities and air, water and laser shows around the Swan River. Hundreds of thousands of people gather at vantage points around Perth in the evening to watch the spectacular fireworks display celebrating Australia’s national day.


Fringe World Festival is the largest annual performance platform in Western Australia and will present a summer smorgasbord of new and familiar entertainment treats.

Perth will be treated to four weeks of entertainment choices in a variety of traditional and non-traditional venues throughout the City of Perth and beyond.

Highlights include De Parel Spiegeltent returning to the Urban Orchard in the Perth Cultural Centre as well as the fountain bar that was such a big hit earlier this year.

Also returning will be The Pleasure Garden, a free-flowing entertainment playground located in Russell Square and just a short stroll from the Perth Cultural Centre.

F orget everything you think you know about conductors. Jessica Gethin, Perth Symphony’s

chief conductor has ripped up the rule book. Elegant and innovative, Jess loves to wear cutting edge Perth designer Jonté Pike’s outfits when she takes to the podium, losing herself in the music and converting a whole new generation to the joys of classical performance.

“I’m very lucky to have a job that allows me to make music every day and see the world, collaborating with some amazing artists and musicians,” she says.

“My home base is Perth, where I live with my husband Patrick and two kids Finn (six) and Olivia (two) and hold the position of Chief Conductor of the Perth Symphony among other guest conducting engagements.”

Although music is the dominating artistic pursuit in Jess’s life, there’s no denying that fashion is also a passion. However, for the busy mother of two, the next few months are leaving very little down time.

“My whole day is either filled with studying, rehearsing and performing music, or running around with the kids, so sometimes the shower is my only space where I can have some quiet and clarity of mind,” she says.

“I tend to plan my day rather than sing. I have been known to attempt Queen of the Night but never beyond the shower walls.”

As the daughter of renowned jazz guitarist Ray Walker, it’s perhaps no surprise that Jess’s path lay scattered with musical notes. Her own musical heroes are eclectic, drawn from the classical world as well as more contemporary artists.

“As a conductor I’m constantly learning from the greats including Bernstein, Furtwangler and Abbado,” she says.

“I love watching Simone Young rehearse, not because she is a female conductor but simply because she knows how to shape the sound and is so articulate and thorough in her rehearsal technique.

“I’ve also had many musicians that have inspired me greatly through the different stages of my career. If I had to pick one, I would have to say my dad who has probably taught me the most about what it is to be a musician. Over

the years I’ve seen how respected he is in the industry; he has such musical integrity, a humble attitude and immense talent. All my early lessons came from him."

What perhaps sets Jess apart from others in her field is her extraordinarily energetic performances once she’s holding the baton.

Hair flying and eyes closed, she takes as much responsibility to deliver an unforgettable evening of musical entertainment as any one of the musicians she conducts would attest.

Her own personal playlist, keeping her going during a morning run for instance, is as eclectic as you might expect from someone so well known for taking audiences by surprise.

“I’m pretty passionate about educating myself on a whole range of genres and believe good music can simply be good music regardless of its label. So my playlists vary a lot,” she says.

“Growing up in a musical family I was exposed to everything from Gregorian Chant to Goldberg Variations, Ella Fitzgerald, Vince Jones and The Yellow Jackets. These days my playlists shuffle from Mefistofele to Amos Lee and Stevie Wonder, from Mahler Symphony 2 to my six-year-old's favourite Ninjago tunes,” she laughs.

As she prepares to leave Perth for Texas, the looming task of learning multiple new scores is beginning to dominate her thoughts.

“I have to learn 18 new operas for an upcoming trip to Dallas in November so that’s occupying my most recently played list this week.”

It’s bound to be an experience she and all those who witness the performances will never forget, something that the 35-year-old will be able to add to an already extraordinary repertoire. Not everything, however, always goes to plan in the mercurial musical arena, she says.

“There have been many meaningful musical moments but two awkward incidents come to mind first. One was snapping my baton in half during a Weber Overture; I was about eight months pregnant at the time so not used to having so much in front of me. I was so focused in the moment it actually took a few bars for me to

drop the remaining stump and continue with my hands,” she says.

“I bought my principal violist a pint for gracefully catching my baton tip. Another moment I will never forget was at a concert in London many years ago, the audience was applauding and I was about to walk out on to the stage to take a bow when the young stage manager grabbed me by the cuff of my jacket, ripped off some gaffa tape with his teeth and did the best hem fix it job in about three seconds then pushed me back on to stage. That gaffa survived for about four years.”

Although her job takes Jess all over the world, Perth will always be her favourite spot to return to.

“I love the climate, I love the open spaces, the bush and the sunshine. I love the cultural diversity and most of all I love the beach; it’s where I take time out of my hectic schedule to

recharge either by myself or with my family and friends.”

With so much ahead of her, Jess could be forgiven for resting on her laurels, but that's not on the agenda.

“As a conductor I am relatively young and at the beginning of my career. I have a little black book on my bedside table with repertoire that I would love to conduct - I’m looking forward to crossing as many of those off the list as I can.”

So as she prepares to pack her suitcase and head to the US, you can be sure of one thing. Jess will be representing the city of Perth’s style, introducing her American audiences to the way we do things here on the west coast.

“My go-to outfit for meetings and rehearsals is jeans, heels and a good black jacket; I tend to wear a lot of black. I’m passionate about supporting local WA designers for events so I wore a classic Zhivago gown as presenter at the Helpmann Awards and was styled by the fantastic up-and-coming designer Jonté Pike for a photo shoot yesterday.

“Classic, strong, feminine; and a really good red lippy.” ⚭

Treasury troveAfter much anticipation, the city’s newest luxury hotel – COMO The Treasury – finally opens its doors this month. Set within a new artisanal precinct called the Cathedral Square Development, the venerable old building, which sat for 20 years unused, has been given an extraordinary new lease of life.

Almost all of the building’s original 19th-century design features have been retained in a meticulous renovation, featuring re-installed dormer windows, rooftop copper trimmings and a stripped facade showing off the original elegant facade.
