Thesis:States should enforce a mandatory gratuity

I. Introduction A. Attention Getter: Tell story of me not getting a tipB. Why it is relevant: Most of us have been either a server or have worked in the food industry. 1. Explain that I would have used that extra cash for a movie ticket but if it was a fellow employee the money would have paid for their dinner that night.2. provide statistics to how many people are employed in food services in the united states full time.C. Credibility: provide personal knowledge and experienceD. Thesis: We need to work to invoke a mandatory gratuity E. Preview of Points: II. NeedA. Tips are main source of income1. At most restaurants servers earn the minimum wage which is a mere $2.15.2. In her interview Stephanie explained that for almost forty hours she actually owes money when receiving her paycheck. It has a large print void stamped on it because the taxes I owed exceeded my wages.B. Tip out money1. Many servers owe a percentage of their sales to pay the host staff, bussing crew, and bartenders.2. This percentage comes from the overall sales of the night, but the actual money is taken from the servers tip pocket3. This the main reason why not leaving a tip is so bada) Servers not only work for free, but they end up owing money after serving them; essentially they are paying to wait on a table.C. Effects the service provided to the rest of the customersIII. Mandatory GratuityA. Strategy1. Predicting Successa) Describe own policy for parties 8 and above and how mandatory gratuity correlates with not choosing to incorporate it in the checkb) Opinion of Managerc) Opinion of Serverd) Provided Studye) Counter arguments(1) Will take away from motivation to provide good service: When I was able to use the mandatory gratuity it encouraged me to work even harder. Even though I had a promised reward, I worked to obtain additional tips on top of it. (2) Most other jobs work for a promised hourly wage2. Stipulationsa) Servers still need incentives to work. By providing four tipping options including ten, fifteen, twenty, and additional on the receipt, customers still have the freedom to decide and servers remain motivated. b) deserves a tip. I am sure we can all look back on a memory of receiving terrible service. In this case, the customer should notify the manager and therefor be exempt from the tip.IV. VisualizationA. Will prevent you from having to do math1. With the given amount options already provided, you will not have to pull up the calculator app on your smart phoneB. May end up paying less1. For those gracious customers who are guilted into leaving a dollar bill on the bar for a 3 dollar drink, by paying the required amount you are actually saving moneyC. This mandatory tip will alleviate a great deal of pressure on full time employees.1. Not as much competition for hours and certain shiftsV. ActionA. Write to your state legislatureB. If planning on opening a business, enforce this program into your check system
