Electricity has existed as lightning in the skies since the beginning of the universe, even before there was life on earth. Early cave people probably recognized the force of electricity when lightning struck. They might also have noticed the way amber attracts light objects, or the way certain fishes, such as the electric eel, stun their prey. Importantly we should know that there are some physicist or scientist that contributes much in the science of electricity and they are the follows:

ELECTRICITY

Otto von Guericke 1602 - 1686

Page 7: Persons who contributed in the field of electricity

A German physicist, engineer, and natural philosopher who was most known for his studies of air pressure.

Built the first machine in 1650 that produced charges by rubbing ball.

He invented the first air pump and used it to study vacuum and the role of air in combustion and respiration.

Otto von Guericke's generator was described as large sulfur ball mounted on a pole inside a glass globe. His devise was used for early experiments with electricity.

Stephen Gray1666-1736

Page 9: Persons who contributed in the field of electricity

In 1729 he showed through experiments that materials can affect the transfer of charges from one object to another in analogous way materials affect the transfer of heat from one object to another

Gray classified materials as conductors and non- conductors

(December 1666 – 7 February 1736) was an English dyer and amateur astronomer who was the first to systematically experiment with electric conduction, rather than simple generation of static charges and investigations of the static phenomena.

Charles Francois de Cisternay Du Fay

1698-1739

Page 11: Persons who contributed in the field of electricity

Charles François de Cisternay Du Fay (1698-1739), French chemist who discovered that electrical charges have both positive and negative values. From the mid-18th through the early 19th centuries, scientists believed that electricity was composed of a fluid.

In 1733 he discovered the two types of interactions can occur between two changes they can attract or repel.

He conclude that there are two kinds of charges which he name vitreous and resinous.

Benjamin Franklin1706-1790

Page 13: Persons who contributed in the field of electricity

An American Statesman and Philosopher. In 1747, he advanced his theory of electricity and published experiments and observation of electricity. He used the same (+) positive and (-) negative to identify the types of charge.

Franklin also showed with his dangerous kite experiments during thunderstorm that lightning is an example of electricity.

Franklin theory was that current is due to flow of positive charges.

Peter Van Musschenbroek

1692-1761

Pieter van Musschenbroek was born on 14 March 1692 in Leiden, Holland, Dutch Republic.

Leyden jar helped in understanding charges.

A Dutch Mathematician. In 1745 he discovered that charges can be built up and stored in what he called as the Leyden Jar named after the University of Leyden he worked.

Alessandro Volta1745-1827

Page 17: Persons who contributed in the field of electricity

Alessandro Volta was born in Como, Italy in 1745. In 1774, he was an Italian Physicist and appointed as professor of physics at the Royal School in Como.

In 1800 he developed the first practical method of generating electricity by inventing the battery.

In his battery he used a stack of silver and zinc plates as the dissimilar materials and separated them from each other.

Georg Simon Ohm

1787-1854

Page 19: Persons who contributed in the field of electricity

In 1827, he discovered that different conductors opposed the flow of change in different ways

Ohm’s Law states that the voltage across the conductor is a proportional to the current passing through it. The unit resistance is called Ohm (Ω).

A German physicist who discovered the law, named after him, which states that the current flow through a conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference (voltage) and inversely proportional to the resistance.

Joseph John Thomson

1856-1940

Page 21: Persons who contributed in the field of electricity

Joseph John Thomson, is an English Physicist always known as "J. J.," was born in Manchester, England, on December 18, 1856. His fame derives primarily from his discovery of the electron in 1897.

In 1897 he discovered the electron. Combined with Rutherford's discovery of the nucleus that contains positive protons and experiment that measures the charges of proton and electrons the charge of objects are
