“The Sixth Amendment of the U. S. Constitution entitle U. S. Citizens to adequate legal representation. This mean all citizens have a right to a competent lawyer”. These were the two sentences suspended City Council Woman Katrina Brown used to tell her story of poor and confl icted legal representation to the Florida Bar.
Council Woman Brown told the Florida Bar -“I am facing 37 counts for white collar crimes. Attorney Darcy Galnor admitted to me in person that she does not have any experience defending white collar crime”. Brown`s freedom was in the hands of this young lawyer who was assigned by a U. S. Magistrate. “ Galnor asked a judge’s permission last month to withdraw as Brown`s court – appointed attorney, citing irreconcilable differences and a rule involving “compelling ethical conditions” according to Steve Patterson in the Florida Times Union.

We left 2018 and have now arrived in the year 2019. There
are many to watch. The news is fi lled with the good, the bad and the ugly. We fi rst start with thinking about politics and who may challenge Trump for the White House in the 2020 elec-tion. There are a few that have thrown themselves into con-sideration. Kamala Harris is Black and Indian, a former California prosecutor and now U.S. Senator. She has been a thorn in the side of Trump since she took offi ce. She is rumored to be close to announcing her bid. She is a Howard University graduate and a member of the AKA sorority.
Senator Corey Booker is another African American rumored to be considering a run for the White House. He has been out front on the issue of criminal justice. The single Senator has been less aggressive than Kamala but the rumors of his run are strong.
We will be watching Mumia Abu Jamal who has been granted a new appeal. The former Black Panther and journalist has support around the world. He was once on death row but is now serving a life sentence. Another cause celeb will center around Angela Davis. The longtime activist who was an icon of resistance
in the 1960s was recently uninvited to receive the Fred Shuttlesworth Award. The annual banquet in her honor was to take place in her hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. Some members of the Jewish community and others thought she was not fi tting for the honor having supported the Palestinian cause. The backlash was swift as supporters (including Blacks and Jews) made their displeasure known. Several members of the organization’s board have resigned as a result. We will continue to watch this issue.
R. Kelly has been under serious scrutiny for years concerning underage girls but now he may be in legal trouble as a result of a new documentary. Surviving R Kelly has caused the state of Georgia to look in to whether the hitmaker has committed crimes there. One of the victims has gotten a lawyer to fi ght what she claims are intimidation tactics from R Kelly’s people.
LeBron James left the Cleveland Cavaliers and is now a Laker. But that is not all he is. He is an owner of a school and will now be getting into television and who knows what else. Whatever it is, we will be watching. Black-ish Star Marsai Martin is set to become the youngest executive producer in Hollywood history. A little girl power for us to watch this year.
A Canadian woman, Revée
Agyepong, 26, of Edmonton was healed of sickle cell anemia after becoming the fi rst adult in Canada to be cured of the disease. She received a life-saving stem cell transplant. Revee was diagnosed with the disease as a toddler and has never known life without it. The transplant cures the sickle cell disease without chemotherapy in preparation for the transplant. Chicagoan Ieshea Thomas has since become the fi rst Midwest patient to receive the successful stem cell transplant cure.
Jordan Peele will be another one to watch. First, he will be releasing “Us,” with “Black Panther” actors Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke. In addition, he will be hosting and narrating the “Twilight Zone” reboot, plus doing the voice for a stuffed bunny toy in “Toy Story 4.” And if that is not enough, he Peele will executive produce a series for HBO called “Lovecraft Country.”
And, fi nally, Rihanna’s Fenty brand has gone in the direction of dark skinned women. Other brands have failed to cater to the beautiful dark complexioned women. Not any longer. Fenty has even teamed up with international Senegalese top Instagram model, Khadie Diop. Rihanna seems to be on track to become a billionaire if she keeps up this pace over time. Her brand should steal the slogan “the black the berry the sweeter the juice.” Happy New Year!

F a i t h I n O u r C o m m u n i t yWhite Churches Have a Moral
Responsibility to Stand UpBy Jesse Jackson
NEWS ANALYSIS
In 2019, we will
commemorate 400
years since the fi rst 20
slaves were transported by
ship from Africa by White
slave traders and landed
in Jamestown, Va. Now
four centuries later, race
remains a central dividing
line. Today, for example, the
racial wealth gap exposes a
stark diff erence. The median
wealth of a White household
(median means half are
above and half below) is 12
times greater than that of a
black household. The median
wealth of a White household
is $134,430, of Blacks it is
$11,030. This is virtually all
about equity in a home, the
leading source of middle
income wealth. African-
Americans still suff er from
de facto segregation, after
years of being red-lined from
decent neighborhoods. In the
fi nancial collapse, African-
American households
suff ered the worse. Black
unemployment rose
twice as much as White
unemployment in the Great
Recession.
Middle-class Black
families, lacking inherited
wealth, were targeted for
the most aggressive and
leveraged home loans. When
the bust came, they were the
most at risk and suff ered the
greatest loss of homes. The
wealth gap is not erased by
educational attainment, by
full-time employment, by
getting the right occupation.
The typical Black family with
a head of household working
full time has less wealth than
a White family whose head
of household is unemployed.
Median wealth for a Black
family whose head has a
college degree is about 1/8
that of a median White family
similarly educated. African-
Americans are constantly
told to pull themselves up
by their bootstraps. In the
Black church, for example,
ministers repeatedly preach
the need for discipline, self-
reliance, faith and hard work.
Yet even those who succeed
still remain behind.
The divide has deep
historical roots. Two-
hundred forty-six years
of chattel slavery (1619-
1865), only twelve years of
Reconstruction (1865-1877),
19 years of Black Codes,
KKK and white citizen
council violence (1877-
1896), 58 years of legal
apartheid with nearly 5,000
African-Americans lynched
and, even since the 1954
Brown decision, ongoing
racial discrimination. During
the recent midterm elections,
I was constantly asked
whether African-Americans
would vote in high enough
numbers and margins for
Democrats so that candidates
White and Black had a
chance to be elected.
Democrats seem almost
satisfi ed if 20 to 30 percent
of Whites turn out to vote
for Black or progressive
White candidates. What
responsibility do White
people have to register and
turnout for progressive black
and white Democrats running
for offi ce? The nation
is facing many morally
relevant social, economic
and political crises — voter
suppression, income and
wealth inequality, criminal
justice reform and climate
change —that now pose
an existential threat to the
next generation. Why does
the White church remain so
silent in the face of these
mounting crises and denial of
justice and opportunity?
In Birmingham in 1963,
with dogs biting children,
high-pressure fi re hoses
knocking down peaceful
protesters, bombers blowing
up churches and Dr. King
in jail, many white church
leaders chose to attack
Dr. King’s non-violent
methodology rather than to
fi ght for a non-discriminatory
Public Accommodations Act.
One would have thought
when the four little girls
were bombed in the 16th
Street Baptist Church, white
churches would have at
least held prayer services or
services of reconciliation.
Instead, most attacked Dr.
King as an outside agitator,
as if he had set the bombs.
Recently in Alabama, I
witnessed a stark contrast.
One extreme was the
excitement in anticipation
of the Georgia/Alabama
SEC championship football
game. When a young
African-American athlete,
Jalen Hurts, replaced an
injured Tua Tagovailoa
at quarterback, every
Alabamian of every political
persuasion, right, left and
center, was pulling for him.
With Hurts’ remarkable
display of skill, Alabama
won the game. He not only
won the game, he arguably
beat George Wallace and the
legislators who earlier locked
blacks out of the University
of Alabama. He beat Bull
Connor who unleashed the
dogs on demonstrators and
the KKK on Freedom Riders.
He beat the KKK bombers
who watched as the church
was decimated and four little
girls were murdered. The
other extreme was witnessed
in Hoover, Ala., where E.J.
Bradford was shot in the
back by a policeman. That
police offi cer is still on the
payroll. The patterns and
prejudices of the old South
are hard to overcome. Here
once more, the white church
has the opportunity and
the responsibility to stand
up, to serve as a Christian
witness. White voices of
moral authority and inclusive
leadership are needed now as
much or more than ever. That
is why the silence seems so
deafening.

After a 9-year legal
debate, the Florida
Supreme Court recently
voted down a lawsuit that
claimed the state fails to
provide suffi cient funding
to meet its constitutional
duty to provide a “uniform,
effi cient, safe, secure and
high-quality system of
free public schools”. The
claim was based on a 1998
amendment to the Education
Article of the Florida State
Constitution which declares
education as a fundamental
value. In addition to
claiming inadequacy of state
education funding, the case,
Citizens for Strong Schools, Inc. v. Florida State Board of Education, also alleged
that two of the State of
Florida’s school voucher
programs were in violation
of a uniformity provision of
the Florida state constitution.
The January 4th ruling of the
court determined that neither
claim was appropriate for
determination by the court
and that such matters were
to be determined by the state
legislature.
The Southern Education
Foundation (SEF) is deeply
disappointed that the lawsuit
fi led by Citizens for Strong
Schools, a parent advocacy
organization, was not
allowed to proceed with full
consideration and review by
the Florida Supreme Court
particularly considering
that 59% of the current 4th-
grade students in Florida are
not on grade level in Reading.
According to the National
Assessment of Educational
Progress (NAEP), Florida
maintains a 26% 4th-grade
reading performance gap
between black and white
students as well. There is
nothing “uniform” or “high-
quality” about these results.
As stated in
SEF’s latest Policy
Positions document, we
believe states have a
public duty to increase
school funding to “address
historical and present-day
achievement gaps.” SEF
strongly calls upon the
Florida General Assembly,
the Governor and State
education offi cials to guard
against any interpretation of
the court’s most recent ruling
to justify any retreat from
the constitutional obligation
to advance equity in public
education.
A result of Florida’s
Supreme Court decision,
it becomes even more
paramount that the newly
elected Governor and the
Florida legislature invest
in proven strategies, such
as personalized learning,
high-quality professional
development, and
wraparound services that
meet the academic needs of
every child.

“Yes, if we don’t get what we want, one way or the other … I will shut down the government,” said President Trump to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi, referring to his demand for $5 billion to build his border wall.
If Trump insists, a good portion of the government will be shut down on Friday over his wall. Trump festooned his demand with his customary lies, claiming that much of the wall has already been built (it hasn’t), that immigrants are spreading disease (they aren’t), that border agents recently detained “10 terrorists in a short period of time” (they didn’t). In reality, illegal immigration has been declining, not rising.
This isn’t a crisis; it’s a political ploy designed to fan fear and division. The Bible teaches us to “love your neighbor as yourself.” We will be judged by how we treat the least of these. In Luke, chapter 10, Jesus tells the story of the stranger on the Jericho Road, who was robbed, stripped and beaten by a band of thieves. He is ignored by a priest and a religious offi cial. He is saved by a Samaritan — a people who were widely despised at the time — who binds his wounds, takes him to an inn and pays his fare.
“Go and do likewise,” Jesus instructs. In contrast, Trump slanders the strangers. His administration has ripped babies from their parents, shackled pregnant women, locked up thousands indefi nitely. He has constricted legal immigration, even as employers seek new workers as the baby boomers age and retire. And now he threatens to shut down a good part of our own government unless he can waste billions on the wall that Mexico won’t pay for. In the midterm elections, Trump,
worried about mobilizing his base, descended into hysteria, threatening to revoke the citizenship of those born here — a direct violation of the Constitution — rousing fears about a supposed invading army of migrants, eventually dispatching 7,000 troops to the border, an insult to our military and to our border patrols.
He succeeded in raising the importance of the issue, but he lost the argument. Democrats swept to a majority in the House. Polls showed most Americans still believe that immigrants benefi t this nation, as opposed to costing it. The percentage of Americans supporting lower levels of immigration has fallen from a high of nearly twothirds in the mid-1990s to an all-time low of less than 30 percent in June.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who immigrated from India at 16 and is the fi rst Indian-American woman elected to the House of Representatives and one of 12 naturalized citizens, notes that a bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill exists — one that once got 68 votes in the U.S. Senate. It paid for more border security, while providing a clear road map to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented, including the Dreamers, and fi xed many of the problems of our system: outdated family visa caps, cruel immigration backlogs, and a failure to address pressing needs of employers. Trump, however, doesn’t seek a solution; he seeks the preservation of an issue — one that he believes can help him divide and conquer. What’s needed instead, as Rep. Jayapal wrote, is a moral imagination about immigration.
This is not about “open borders,” as Trump slanders Democrats. It is about creating a humane, sensible, smart system to deal with legal immigration, cut down on illegal entry and address those desperately seeking asylum. We would also be wise to seek to assist rather than destabilize our neighbors so that their economies thrive. People don’t want to leave their homes. Only desperation for their families leads them to venture into the unknown.
As we head into this holiday season, it is a good time for each of us to look into our hearts, to see our neighbors without blinders. They aren’t seeking to invade America. They aren’t longing to leave their families, their homes, their communities. They are struggling to survive. They are strangers on the Jericho Road. We should meet them with an open heart, not a closed mind.

Of the more than 330,000 U.S. students studying abroad, only 6.1 percent are African American and 10.1 percent are Latino. By Peire Wilson, LaGuardia Community College
Born in Norfolk, Va., and raised by a single mother, I felt a special responsibility to go to college but,
at first, I failed at it - quite literally. But I turned my life around and see a pathway to success. Studying in London as a Frederick Douglass Global Fellow was instrumental in healing my wounds and making me whole again.
First enrolled as a college student at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., I left school my freshman year because it wasn’t a good fit for me. A year later, I transferred near home to a historically black college, Norfolk State University, but I abruptly left during my second semester when tragedy struck in a way that I could have never imagined.
In a scuffle on campus, one of my friends, Sean Williams, was tragically stabbed to death. Like me, Sean was a classically-trained vocalist. I was in such shock from his murder, I left school and didn’t even tell my teachers why.
I moved to Florida, where I fell in love and was blessed to have a son. I wanted to make a positive future for my son, but I really didn’t know how. I thought about it long and hard and decided I wanted to be a lawyer in arts and entertainment. I knew I needed to be in New York City. I knew I had to go back to school.
I got my transcripts. I put myself in a suit and put myself on a bus and, transcripts in hand, I went to the headquarters of City University of New York, CUNY.
The admissions counselor opened up my transcripts and said, “Uhhhh....”
I said, “I know.” I had a 1.0 GPA.“These are the grades I have,” I told him.
“I’m willing to start completely over.”He said, “It’s going to be competitive,” but
handed me a list of schools and I returned to Florida.
But I came back and wanted to attend the first school on the list, LaGuardia Community College in Queens, N.Y.
I met with a counselor. She said, “These grades....”
I told her, “If I had known when I was just young what I know now, I would have done things differently. I just didn’t know. Unfortunately, this is what happened. I plan on being a lawyer.”
She asked: “You want to be a lawyer?”I responded, “I will be a lawyer.”She arched her eyebrows and said, “I like
the way that you said that.”She told me what I needed to do to be
admitted: take a math and English entrance exam. I passed English, but failed math by two points. I took a remedial math course, passed and was admitted. I learned I loved math and started tutoring other students. I earned my associate’s degree in legal studies and received an invitation to join the President’s Society for students with excellent academic records. That’s right, I was invited. When I received the Frederick Douglass Fellowship, I called my mother to share the good news.
In London, though, as a Frederick Douglass Fellow, I felt like an outsider. I was older than the other students. I was a father. I came from a single-family household. But I realized something profound in London. During a workshop, a videographer asked us, “Tell us a time when you had to face your privilege?”
The image of my friend, Sean, came to me. He was the motivating factor in my life. When my turn to speak arrived, I told the Fellows around me, “I lost a friend who never got to see his full potential. The biggest privilege I have is just being alive. My friend died when he was 18.”
I broke down in tears. That was one of the first moments that my friend’s murder hit me. I told the Fellows: “You all just need to appreciate just being here. Just having breath in your lungs.”
We were all crying together. We were all celebrating life together. In that moment, I realized something beautiful and profound: our common humanity.

Overcoming Tragedy and Celebrating Life Again
Make Better Brain Health Your Top New Year’s Resolution for 2019
(StatePoint) Alzheimer’s Disease is expected to impact nearly 14 million Americans by 2050, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. So, as you set your New Year’s resolutions for 2019, consider the following ways to maintain and improve your cognitive function.
Research has shown lifestyle changes like improving diet and exercising regularly have helped drive down death rates from cancer, heart disease and other major diseases. These same lifestyle changes may also reduce or slow your risk of cognitive decline, which is often a precursor to Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
Discovering risk factors and preventive strategies for cognitive decline that can cause
problems with memory, language, thinking and judgment is a hot topic in Alzheimer’s research, as are multi-faceted lifestyle interventions to slow or prevent dementia. The good news? Many such interventions are things you might already be doing or thinking about doing in the new year, such as eating well, staying physically active and getting good sleep, just to name a few.
“There is increasing evidence to suggest that what is good for the heart is good for our brains,” says Keith Fargo, Ph.D., director of scientific programs and outreach at the Alzheimer’s Association. “Keeping our brains healthy is not something we should worry about only as we get older. It should be a lifelong effort.”
One easy way to encourage brain health at any age is to stimulate your mind with problem-
solving challenges. Working on a jigsaw puzzle, learning a new language and playing strategy games are a few ways to strengthen your memory -- as long as they are new and challenging tasks. Research has also found correlations between higher levels of formal education and a better cognitive reserve -- so sign up for a class in 2019!
Another way to promote brain health is taking care of your mental health. Managing stress and anxiety is not only important for overall health and wellbeing, but studies have found a link between depression and increased risk of cognitive decline. Take care of yourself and seek medical treatment if you have symptoms.
Being social may also support brain health. That’s right. Add “hang out with friends” and “have fun” to your New Year’s resolutions list.
Better yet, take on several of these lifestyle changes for maximum impact. For example, enroll in a dance class with a friend.
Alzheimer’s researchers are now looking into whether a “cocktail” of these interventions can protect cognitive function. The Alzheimer’s Association’s U.S. Study to Protect Brain Health Through Lifestyle Intervention to Reduce Risk (U.S. POINTER) is a two-year clinical trial that hopes to answer this question, and is the first such study to be conducted of a large group of Americans nationwide.
While there’s currently no certain way to prevent Alzheimer’s and other dementias, there is much to be gained by living a healthy lifestyle and adopting brain health habits that you enjoy, so that you stick with them for the long haul.

told the Times Union “I am not looking for no plea deal. I want to go to trial “. Katrina indicated in her Florida Bar Complaint her attorney was strongly encouraging her to take a plea deal on federal fraud charges and to help state prosecutors in investigating a City Council Sunshine Law Violation.
During a meeting in September she was told by Galnor, “there were new developments with my case… Attorney Galnor stated the attorney from the Jacksonville State Attorney’s Offi ce handling the Sunshine Law Investigation placed a call to Assistant U. S. Attorney Tysen Duva seeking a plea deal, which involve you pleading guilty to two federal counts and the Assistant U. S. Attorney recommending probation and you assisting the State Attorney’s Offi ce with their Sunshine Law Investigation”, stated in her Bar Complaint.
For clarity of what the State Attorney’s Offi ce wanted from her, the Council Woman asked Galnor, “Were the targets on the investigation city council members Dennis Garret and Anna Brosche”? “Her answer to me was yes”. “Attorney
Galnor also stated to me if this get out it will be a mess”, according to Brown`s bar Complaint.
Nate Monroe in his January 9, 2019 Times Union article entitled “Time for State Attorney Melissa Nelson to set record straight”, raised some profound and questionable Abuse of Offi ce issues. Monroe stated “Brosche – whose own successful but divisive run for council president left hard feelings in its wake – and Dennis are Mayor Lenny Curry`s most vocal antagonists in city government. Brosche also looks like she`s gearing up to announce a run against Curry, who is seeking re-election”. Brosche became a candidate for the election for Mayor January 11, 2019.
Monroe also wrote this about the State Attorneys Abuse of Offi ce - “First, if Brosche’s actions on council are under scrutiny by Nelson`s offi ce, it makes sense for everyone to know sooner rather than later what is going on now…Brown`s claims in her bar complaint, plus a lot of speculation – sheds an unfl attering light on Brosche and Dennis. Nate highlighted another indicting point about Abuse of Offi ce for Curry and Nelson when he wrote, “Nelson herself has relationships that are worth addressing. One
consultant Nelson paid to run her campaign is now Curry’s chief of staff. A second consultant she paid is the head of Curry’s political operation”.
During a meeting in October, Galnor told Brown “if I were you, I would take this plea deal”. In that same month, State Attorney Nelson recommended Attorney Galnor to the Jacksonville Ethics Commission. November 13, 2019 the City Council confi rmed Galnor’s appointment to that commission. Galnor told Brown in December “she was not going to allow me nor any other client to stop the advancement of her career”. January 4, 2019 U. S. Magistrate James Klindt removed Galnor from Katrina Brown`s Federal Case and assigned her another attorney. Katrina Brown legal battle continues today.
Council Persons Katrina Brown and Reginald Brown fi nd themselves in a political and legal situation which is clouded by profound and questionable Abuse of Offi ce issues. The Abuse of Offi ce involve Mayor Lenny Curry, State Attorney Melissa Nelson, Brian Hughes and a personal relationship with Tim Baker.

This Government Shutdown Is Destroying America
By Jeffrey L. Boney
Imagine having to choose between paying your mortgage and picking up the much-needed prescription you need for your health crisis, because the job you report to and the federal resources you have relied on to live day to day are no longer available to you because of things beyond your control.
Choices like that, and many others, have been exactly what the approximately 800,000 federal workers, the roughly 4 million contractors and the countless number of low-income families who rely on the federal government, have had to deal with since the beginning of what has become the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. This has been the third shutdown of the federal government since President Donald J. Trump took the oath of offi ce.
As a result of this catastrophic and life-altering shutdown, so many people who have relied on the government for their livelihood have been severely impacted in a major way.
People have had their Medicare and Medicaid disrupted. The stock market has been volatile. Federal workers have gone without paychecks and are in
danger of losing everything they have worked so hard to attain to live the American dream. Safety has also become an issue.
Our food is not safe. As a result of the shutdown, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) immediately announced that most they had stopped most of their routine food safety inspections because staff had been working without pay. These inspections handled by the unpaid workers included things like doing safety inspections on foods that had been imported from overseas, dangerous recalls, foodborne illness outbreaks, and much more.
Our drugs are not safe. The FDA also stated that because of the shutdown, they don’t have the ability to review new drugs that could be benefi cial in helping people get better until the government reopens.
Even our airports are not safe.Just a few weeks ago, a
passenger on Delta Air Lines who was traveling from Hartsfi eld-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta to Tokyo, Japan, informed authorities that he had inadvertently carried his loaded fi rearm through airport security and onto the plane. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
confi rmed this and there are more concerns that unpaid TSA workers may not have the same level of focus due to the non-pay and many are not even reporting to work. Just this past week, the TSA checkpoint in Terminal B at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston was closed due to TSA agents calling in sick to protest the shutdown.

JACKSONVILLE – RIVER CITYThe Bold New City of the South
By Miles Jaye
To the newcomer, Jacksonvilleis not an easy town to learn, primarily because there is so much to discover-- it’s as fascinating as
it is unique. This enormous 900 square mile region of Northeast Florida, the “First Coast,” is a historian’s paradise—not to mention the golfi ng, fi shing, boating or just sunning on one of the great beach getaways.
About 3 years ago, before moving to Jacksonville from Orlando, about 2 hours to the Southwest, I did a quick search of the area to gain some cursory insight into what I would encounter. Much of what I heard about the city on TV news was not favorable, yet I remained cautiously optimistic.
Much to my surprise and delight, I’ve fallen for Jacksonville’s understated charm. First of all, I feel right at home with the combination of the St. Johns River, the bridges and the Atlantic Ocean. They remind me of the Hudson and East Rivers, the famous bridges and of course, Coney Island and Brighton Beach.
What continues to perplex me, however, is how unaware Jacksonvillians seem to be of their own hometown’s appeal. In preparation for the upcoming Rhythm & Romance concert at the Times Union Center, I began compiling highlights, special features and all-around fun facts about Jacksonville to share with friends and family from other parts of the country. I want them to come for the concert but to make a weekend of it—I want to share what I’ve discovered.
With so much to do and so much rich history, I wonder why this city is not as well-known as other American cities of similar size and populations. In a brief conversation with former Mayor Tommy Hazouri, I complimented the city, but I asked him why it was such a well-kept secret-- he just smiled.
What I also discovered in discussions with Jax natives, was that they were often largely unfamiliar with much of what I learned in my research. Because I believe that pride in one’s own hometown comes from an awareness and appreciation of what makes that hometown special, I decided to share some of my fi ndings in this Florida Star issue. • Due to names like James Weldon
Johnson, Zora Neale Hurston, AsaPhillip Randolph, and Ma Rainey,Blacks in Jacksonville enjoyed its veryown renaissance. Jacksonville’s La Villaarea (downtown) was dubbed, “Harlem ofthe South.” Some say Harlem was the “LaVilla of the North”.
• Three Historically Black Colleges andUniversities, Edward Waters College,Bethune Cookman University and Florida Memorial University, where James Weldon and John Rosamond Johnsonpenned “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” wereall founded in Jacksonville.
• In the early 1900’s, before Hollywood wasHollywood, Jacksonville boasted 30 activefi lm studios, including those producing
popular Black Films. Norman Studios in Arlington is preserved as a Silent Film Museum.
• Stars of the Negro Baseball League playedin James P. Small Park located neardowntown Jacksonville.
• The fi rst Blues song to be recorded, “Downthe Country” by Blind Blake and LeolaWilson was recorded in Jacksonville in1926.
• Ray Charles attended the St. AugustineSchool for the Deaf and Blind. In hisformative years, he often played indowntown Jacksonville at the Clara WhiteMission.
• Artifacts of the Mocama Indians datingback 2500 years B.C. were discovered onBlack Hammock Island. Artifacts havebeen unearthed by UNF teams that dateback as far as 4,000 BCE.
• St. Simons and Cumberland Islands, whereGeechee and Gullah historical sites canstill be visited, are just across the Georgiaborder, an hour North of Jacksonville.
• Both Jacksonville and Duval county werenamed after former Jacksonville governors,Andrew Jackson being its fi rst. Jacksonfi rst crossed into what was then Spanishterritory to quell skirmishes with the NativeAmerican population, however, his trueinterest was recovering escaped slaves.
• Many of us were taught slaves typicallytraveled North to freedom by theUnderground Railroad, however, for slavesin Georgia and the Carolinas, it was muchmore expedient to travel South. DuringSpanish occupation of the region, freedomwas just as likely, in fact, many formerslaves actually fought for the Spanish army.Freed slaves were also known to cominglewith the Native Americans of the region, such as the Timucuans. This region is richwith African history.
• Of the neighborhoods, La Villa, Brooklyn, North Bank, South Bank, SanMarco, Springfi eld, Southside, Eastsideand Arlington, Ortega, Riverside andAvondale, Avondale, Ortega, Springfi eldand Riverside are in the National Registerof Historic Places.
• With its two Naval Air Stations, the KingsBay Submarine Base and Blount IslandMarine Base, this area is home to the thirdlargest military complex in the UnitedStates.
• As we prepare to celebrate the birthday ofDr. Martin Luther King, Jr., it’s worthnoting that A. Philip Randolph, born innearby Crescent City, was a leader of thehistoric March on Washington where Kingdelivered his famous “I Have A Dream”speech.
As the songs says, “these are a few of my favorite things,” and in many respects this town has a long way to go and grow, but, having lived all across the country, I don’t mind saying, “Jacksonville is one of my favorite cities in America.”www.milesjaye.com

Let’s take a trip down NFL Playoffs Drive, where the Philadelphia Eagles took on the New Orleans Saints last weekend for a classic that will be remembered for ages. The Eagles from the City of Brotherly Love jumped out to an early 14-0 lead and was looking very dominant towards the beginning of the game. Saints would finally find some rhythm using dominant ball control. With QB Drew Brees under center, he took New Orleans on scoring drives of 92, 79, and 67 yards to give the Saints a 20-14 lead over the Eagles. With less than two minutes remaining in the game Philadelphia only being down by six with one timeout, had a chance to drive down the field
and win the game.Eagles QB Nick Foles has
had 12 game winning drives and is on the Jacksonville Jaguars list for available top free agent quarterbacks for next season. However, on this night he would fall short - throwing a pass that slipped through WR Alshon Jeffery’s hands. He is known to have some of the best hands in the NFL. The pass slipped through his hands and right into the hands of Saints CB Marshon Lattimore to clutch the win with the interception. Jeffrey, clearly distraught, laid face down looking at the turf. After the game Jeffrey quoted, “That’s on me. I’ll take that loss. I let my teammates down, the city of Philadelphia, I’ll take that.”
Cowboys FansWhether having a great
season or getting beat up
all year by the playground bully, it really doesn’t matter. The Dallas Cowboys, aka Americas Team, will be loved by their fans. This year the team in silver and blue had much to cheer about as they traveled to LA. They traveled there to take on the high-powered offense of the Rams in an NFC playoff showdown. Cowboys defense allowed a season high 273 yards rushing. C.J. Anderson rumbled up 123 yards and 2 TDs. Todd Gurley had 115 yards and a TD - including a 35-yard scoring run. LA picked up on tells by the Cowboys defensive line scouting previous games they lost.
The read it by the way certain linemen set up, particularly linemen who position their hands in certain directions, or if a player was tilted one way or another. The Cowboys
defense had been dominant throughout the regular season but, they weren’t good enough to be victorious as they fell to the Rams 30- 22. Even with this lost, the Dallas Cowboys had a great season having acquired WR Amari Cooper in a midseason trade. In addition, with QB Dak Prescott and leading NFL rusher Ezekiel Elliott, they should win the NFC East again next year and make another run for the Super Bowl.
But, I’ll bet you a cup of boiled peanuts and a Coca Cola - win, lose, or draw, Cowboy nation and those Dallas fans will believe in their team and be shouting louder than all other fans in the NFL. The Rams will take a trip to New Orleans this weekend for a NFC title game to see who will represent the conference in the Super Bowl.

Clemson’s championship football team has been offered a victory meal upgrade.
After President Donald Trump served the squad McDonald’s and other fast food in a White House visit this week, “Good Morning America” host Michael Strahan on Tuesday promised to feed the 15-0 Tigers lobster. On him.
He invited the team to New York City for the feast.
“We’re gonna take care of you,” Strahan, a Hall of Famer who played for the New York Giants, said on the show. “We’re gonna give you the proper meal that you deserve because that was one great game, a great accomplishment.”
Clemson routed Alabama, 44-16, in the championship game for its second title in three years and celebrated with Trump in a fast-food buffet that was mocked by many.
We suggest the lads hightail it to the Big Apple and dig in!

Former NFL Player Talks Victory Over Addiction During Pro BowlORLANDO, Fla. —
Addiction is not a common topic at the Pro Bowl, albeit a relevant one. Retired NFL players are four times more likely to misuse prescription opioids. This year, one former Denver Broncos wide receiver is setting out to change this statistic through partnerships with The Blackberry Center and NFL Alumni during Pro Bowl week.
Vance Johnson, one of the Bronco’s “three amigos” who ran in dimes from John Elway in the ‘80s, almost lost his life to depression and addiction. Today, he has five years of sobriety under his belt, and is working to help the next generation avoid the same downward spiral.
“As a professional athlete, I endured a lot of physical and emotional stress throughout my career,” Johnson said. “It probably started as an adolescent. This is why I find it so important to contribute my time with the NFL Alumni
organization to promote their mission of caring for kids.”
Previously, Johnson’s super power was always his quick feet. Eventually, depression and addiction caught up with him. Through hard work and perseverance, Johnson found victory within himself. Today, making an impact is perhaps his greatest accomplishment.
The Blackberry Center, located in St. Cloud, is just miles away from where the Pro Bowl will be held in Orlando this year. Johnson is proud to represent this hospital during Pro Bowl week as a resource for those who need it.
During Pro Bowl week, Johnson will volunteer with other NFL alumni at the Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital, as well as the Madden Tournament, where junior and high school students can interact with former players.
There will also be several other opportunities for fans to meet and greet the former NFL star:

ATLANTA – Dr. Melanie Pavich, associate professor of interdisciplinary studies and history in Penfield College, has been awarded a grant of nearly $2,000 to support continuing research and service by Mercer students and faculty focused on preservation of African-American heritage and heritage sites on the Georgia coast.
The grant was awarded by Georgia Humanities, in partnership with the Georgia Department of Economic Development, through funding from the Georgia General Assembly.
This is the second Georgia Humanities grant that Dr. Pavich has received for her seven-plus-year research-based service-learning project, and it will assist in the funding of an upcoming public presentation by Mercer students and faculty members, titled “This is My Dirt: Stories of Saint Simons Island,” based on oral history interviews conducted by students with residents of the island located off Georgia’s coast in Glynn County.
The presentation will take place May 18 on Saint Simons Island, and Dr. Daina Ramey Berry, associate professor of history and African-American diaspora studies and Oliver H. Radkey Regents Fellow in History at the University of Texas at Austin, will lecture and meet with students and local residents.

Georgia man arrested in FBI sting for allegedly plotting to attack White House with rocket
By James Salzer
Gov. Brian Kemp made a substantial down payment on his campaign
promises Thursday, recommending that teachers get a $3,000 raise and state employees a 2 percent pay hike.
If the budget Kemp proposed Thursday is approved, the raises will put more money into the paychecks of more than 200,000 educators and state employees in Georgia.
Kemp’s budget plan for fiscal 2020, which begins July 1, also includes borrowing $150
million for a new voting system and $100 million for road and bridge projects.
Kemp promised a $5,000 teacher pay raise on the campaign trail, but the price tag - about $700 million - had budget writers concerned. The $3,000 pay raise Kemp proposed is a substantial down payment on the promise he said he’ll still keep, and something the governor said is vitally needed because so many teachers are leaving the profession within their first five years on the job.
“To recruit and retain the best and brightest in our schools we must remove heavy burdens in the classroom and keep teacher pay competitive,” Kemp told lawmakers in his State-of-the-State address. The governor called it the biggest raise in state history. Gov. Zell Miller pushed 6 percent pay raises for four years during his second term in the 1990s in an effort to make average teacher pay in Georgia the highest in the Southeast.

The purpose of the African American Business Project is to promote African
American Economic Empowerment and Independence in the United States of America for present and future African American generations. Volunteers needed.
To all of my newsletter readers across the United States of America and in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Barbados, Philippine Islands, etc.… After asking you to write the United Nations in respond to global homelessness, hunger, employment, clean water and good health. Finally, I received a response from the United Nations Public Inquiries Team on behalf of the Secretary-General, as mentioned within the letter that the United Nations does not endorse material or projects generated outside the organization. Well, that means out of the approximate 210 countries that exist in the world the United Nations consist of 193 member states and there must be a follow-up in order to excel. In short, people from all across world must began write to their United Nations Ambassador regarding the less fortunate, encouraging them collectively to create and implement more programs to support the less fortunate worldwide. www.un.org/en/contact-us/index.html
The United Nations consist of six main bodies 1. The General Assembly, 2. The Security Council, 3. The Economic and Social Council, 4. The Trusteeship Council, 5. The International Court of Justice, and 6. The Secretariat (Secretary-General). The president of the Economic and Social Council is Her Excellency Inga Rhonda King, write her also along with your United Nations State Ambassador regarding homelessness and poverty across the world. Speak-up, sometimes all we need is a spark to start a fl ame and a trickle to turn into an ocean of voices that will represent a good humanitarian cause. Spread the word; write your United Nations ambassador in regard to homelessness, poverty and hunger all across the world. It is time for a change. Spread the word.
The American government shows very little concern pertaining to urban revitalization, homelessness, hunger, poverty and employment in America, and will continue to do so as long as the American people sit back and say nothing. Speak up
America. For the past ten years much focus has been put on Same Sex Marriage, The Middle Class, The Aff ordable Care Act and Immigration Reform. Now today there is a big Presidental governmental war over a boarder wall between Mexico and the United States, while many Americans are homeless, suff ering from starvation and unemployment. Just as well as in other countries across the world where homelessness and poverty exist, it also exist right here in our own back yards. After such a powerful move during the 1960’s from the Civil Rights Movement, as African Americans how did we allow ourselves to collectively to get in such a situations as we are in today especially with so much Black on Black crime and murder escalating from gang violence.
Collectively African Americans earn approximately 1.3 trillion dollars per year here in the United States of America and over 80% of what we earn and spend goes into the hands, pockets and bank accounts of another race of people, which equals over 850 billion dollars per year. When I was growing up I was always told never put all your marbles in one basket, or save something for a rainy day. During the 1960’s up unto the 1980’s many African Americans put all their social and economic hopes and dreams in political elections. Today we have plenty of African Americans in elected offi ce and the majority of time when you write them they never write back and the next you hear from them is during the next election.
From the days of the reconstruction period (1863) through the Great Migration (1910-
1970) the most African Americans had in America was churches, and they server the purpose to get ahead by law.
There was once a time when you could go to a church and be welcome with open arms in the times of desperation. Now today if you are not a member of a particular church or denomination you get shun away quick. There used to be a time when pastors would live in the church parish, now today most of them want the church members to put them in a mansion with an increase in paycheck. Some politicians want to be preachers and some preachers want to be politicians (Matthew 6:24). Regardless of what laws the members of the United States Supreme Court implement today, stand on the Word of God. In the Bible in the book of Matthew 4:4, Jesus Christ said “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeded out of the mouth of God.”
Never put all your marbles into one basket. The last door of opportunity for African Americans to achieve in America is our Economic Independence. Keep hope alive. All things are possible with the help of God-Almighty.
In times past African Americans had their own baseball leagues and other sports leagues, now today since we merged with Caucasian athletic leagues the majority of us can’t even aff ord a ticket to watch the game at the stadium. We are continuously practicing giving everything away that we have freely including our money and our love for one another. It is time for a change.
Come and go with me on a short journey
in the hood, the ghetto, where on every street corner there is a “Mom and Pop” store operated by foreigners. Let’s travel to some big cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit, Newark, NJ, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, etc.…whereas the majority of religious organizations and denominations within our race consist of Christians and Muslims. Now spiritually there always have seem to be much separation and controversy between both religions, even though some of us grew up in the same house together and ate the same food, watched the same television programs together, went to the same public schools together, and turn around and grow up and split up because of religious association which diminishes our economic capabilities collectively. Now this is the hood that I am talking about, it is a place where most suburban African Americans attend church on Sunday mornings and completely forget about the hood during the week days.
Now there are over 2,400 diff erent religions in the world, yet at the same time African Americans will go out and eat at a Chinese Restaurant (Shrimp Fried Rice) and never dispute with the Chinese about their religions such as; Buddhism, which makes up 25% of the Chinese population; Confucianism, which is really not a religion, but considered to be an ethical philosophical system which played an important role in the formation of Chinese peoples thinking pattern and teaching methods, and Taoism, which infl uenced the Chinese culture very deeply, especially on traditional medicine and literature.
Now, perhaps I opened up a “Mom and Pop” store in China Town, downtown Philadelphia, Pa., the Chinese people wouldn’t even come in and buy a fi fty cent bag of potato chips. The same way with the Latinos from South America and those that are America citizens along with the Asians and everyone else.
Their way of thinking is diff erent from ours. It’s alright to be friends with foreigners but not economic slaves. We need to change our way of thinking especially when economically it comes to that “Old Mighty Dollar.” Business is business. I encourage you to write to the Secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development in regard to urban revitalization in the United States of America, speak up, and let your voice be heard. Make your vote count in season and out of season. (Ephesians 6:11) Put on the whole armor of God.

After serving seven terms in the House,

2 Derailed Cars on Track at Atlanta Airport to be MovedATLANTA — Crews are
still working to repair the damage after an Atlanta commuter train derailed on the tracks at the world’s busiest airports.
The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority said two cars on an out-of-service train derailed around 9 p.m.
Tuesday, leaving regular trains unable to reach the station at Hartsfi eld-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
There were no passengers on the train Tuesday night and the driver wasn’t hurt.
A crane to move the detailed cars was expected late Thursday morning.
Shuttle buses are being used to transfer passengers from a nearby station to the airport.
The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
The disruption comes less than three weeks before Atlanta hosts the 2019 Super Bowl.
Here comes a total lunar eclipse and supermoon, all wrapped into one.
The moon, Earth and sun will line up this weekend for the only total lunar eclipse this year and next. At the same time, the moon will be ever so closer to Earth and appear slightly bigger and brighter than usual — a supermoon.
“This one is particularly good,” said Rice University astrophysicist Patrick Hartigan. “It not only is a supermoon and it’s a total eclipse, but the total eclipse also lasts pretty long. It’s about an hour.”
The whole eclipse starts Sunday night or early Monday, depending on location , and will take about three hours.
It begins with the partial phase around 10:34 p.m. EST Sunday. That’s when Earth’s shadow will begin to nip at the moon. Totality — when Earth’s shadow completely blankets the moon — will last 62 minutes, beginning at
11:41 p.m. EST Sunday. If the skies are clear, the
entire eclipse will be visible in North and South America, as well as Greenland, Iceland, Ireland, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden, Portugal and the French and Spanish coasts. The rest of Europe, as well as Africa, will have partial viewing before the moon sets.
During totality, the moon will look red because of sunlight scattering off Earth’s atmosphere. That’s why an eclipsed moon is sometimes known as a blood moon. In January, the full moon is also sometimes known as the wolf moon or great spirit moon.
So informally speaking, the upcoming lunar eclipse will be a super blood wolf — or great spirit — moon.
In the U.S., the eclipse will begin relatively early Sunday evening, making it easier for children to stay up and enjoy the show. Plus the next day is a federal holiday, with most schools closed. But the
weather forecast for much of the U.S. doesn’t look good.
Parents “can keep their kids up maybe a little bit later,” said, Hartigan, who will catch the lunar extravaganza from Houston. “It’s just a wonderful thing for the whole family to see because it’s fairly rare to have all these things kind of come together at the same time.”
“The good thing about this is that you don’t need any special equipment,” he added.
Asia, Australia and New Zealand are out of luck. But they had prime viewing last year, when two total lunar eclipses occurred.
The next total lunar eclipse won’t be until May 2021.
As for full-moon supermoons, this will be the fi rst of three this year. The upcoming supermoon will be about 222,000 miles (357,300 kilometers) away. The Feb. 19 supermoon will be a bit closer and one in March will be the farthest.
