OUR PROMISESFROM THE EDITOR
Dr. Gordon McDonald, Exec. Editor
On May 14, 1948, in Tel Aviv, one of the greatest miracles of history occurred against all odds. Jewish Agency Chairman David Ben-Gurion, using Ezekiel as his authority, proclaimed the establishment of the modern State of Israel. After 2000 years, a nation “that was not” became one again. In an afternoon ceremony Ben-Gurion pronounced the words, “We
hereby proclaim the establishment of the Jewish State in Palestine, to be called Israel.” This prompted both applause and tears. While I am sure there are many Jews that shed tears of joy that day, they were outnumbered by Israel’s enemies. Still today, Israel’s Independence Day celebration affects similar responses. Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israeli Independence Day) is nominally cel-ebrated on the 5th day of Iyar on the Hebrew calendar. Of course there are further rules that dictate exactly which day of Iyar the celebrations can begin. This year Independence Day actually fell on April 26 (Iyar 4) on our Gregorian calendar. As you can imagine, Israel’s Independence is not celebrated by everyone. Some Jewish groups feel that Israel’s recreation was undesirable, even a sin. Her enemies see it as al-Nakba, the disaster, which represents a loss of their national identity. We see it as something much more. God moved “heaven and earth” to remain faithful to the covenants He established with Abraham and his descendents. This is the surety on which we, who are those fortunate enough to be “grafted in,” stand. Those promises are our promises also. In the most unfathomable and destitute situations He never, ever fails to be faithful to His commitments. This is the cornerstone upon which to build a house that cannot be shaken. Happy Birthday, Israel! And thank you.

ISRAEL:PAST AND PRESENT
IN THE LAND
In 2004 I was blessed to travel with Chuck Missler and Bob Cornuke to the island
of Malta to examine the lost anchors of Paul. The tour had an extension that in-
cluded Israel and Chuck was unable to lead that portion and asked me if I would do
that. My response was, of course, yes, but I had to tell him that
I had never been to Israel!
His response was, “No problem ... the guides do most of the work!”
Who would have known that my world was about to be turned upside
down!
Chuck did have another tidbit for me; he said the following words
that I will never forget! He said, “Dan, when you get off the plane and
your feet hit the ground, you are going to have a strange sensation ....
you are going to feel like you are home!”
I smiled and thought: “That’s another one of those ‘Misslerisms’
that I need to file away!” Again, who would have known? That trip
changed my life and birthed a passion to take as many people as pos-
sible to the “land where it all began” so that they can experience Yeshua
in His backyard! Words cannot express my personal transformation,
but suffice it to say—Chuck’s words were spot on! I felt at home!
On that first tour I met our guide and now dear friend, Jane Be-
nari. Her passion for the Land was contagious and I caught whatever
she had. But it was more than just a tour seeing the sites; God began to
plant in me the Land and also to plant a love for Israelis in my heart.

It’s now been 8 years, 20 plus tours and over 1000 folks who have traveled with us and
I still have that fever! Israel is a “must” for all Believers, and Israel, as you know, is in the
middle of what God is doing today. He is not finished with
His Chosen, and as Believers we have been grafted in and are
in some way connected. God has brought us many friends
and very unique contacts through our trips (both Israelis who
are Believers and those who are not yet Believers.)
Besides our tours, my wife and I have also had the experi-
ence of living in Israel for three months in order to explore
new opportunities. At that time we met Don Finto and were
introduced to the Messianic movement in the Land. Then
came more and more contacts, those Godly coincidences of
bumping into folks that God had arranged (Divine appointments). That’s how we met our
friends from Gateway! We did not meet in Dallas but at the Dan Hotel in Tel Aviv, and
from that “chance” meeting we have expanded our understanding of the Messianic move-
ment in the Land. Needless to say, God is doing amazing things in Israel today and most of
them are not on the evening news or even on the radar of most Christians today.
With that in mind, I wanted to include the following article from my friend, Don
Finto, in order to expand your perspective of what is going on in the Israel of today.
* * *Unrealistic Optimism!
I am an unrealistic optimist
and intend to stay that way! As
John Acuff used to say, “I’ve read

“Darkness covers the earth
and thick darkness is over the
peoples, but the LORD rises
upon you and his glory appears

arising in his day, but he was
peering into the future when
the deepest darkness of all time
would engulf the earth, but the
people of God would shine like
the stars of the heavens (see Dan-
iel 12:3, 10 and Matthew 13:43)
in the midst of the wickedness.
The day Isaiah predicted is
upon us. Juergen Buehler, Execu-
tive Director of International
Christian Embassy in Jerusalem, recently wrote an article that speaks of some of the light
shining through the darkness of the Arab world:
Some 70,000 Egyptian Christians gathered recently for a joyous
outdoor worship service... Iran’s underground churches are currently
experiencing an annual growth of 20%—the highest rate worldwide,
followed by Afghanistan at 16%... An Algerian pastor... reports that
today the Evangelical churches in his country can claim more than
200,000 members... Libya also holds surprises... the spiritual climate
in Libya has changed significantly since Ghadaffi’s fall... not enough
Bibles for those seeking them... A Moroccan Church is emerging and
accelerating in growth and maturity... New believers [in Tunisia]
have increased and new church groups have come into being over the
past few years... In Jordan, the evangelical Church is experiencing
encouraging growth, doubling from 1995 to 2010... Similar reports
are emerging from Syria and Lebanon... One of the most sustained
revivals is taking place in Indonesia which has the world’s largest
Muslim population but is now around 30% Christian...
Paul foresaw our day. “How much greater riches [for the whole world] will their [Is-
rael’s] fullness bring” (Rom 11:12). More Jewish people have come to faith in the last few
years than in all the centuries previous. The “greater riches” world revival is increasing.
Isaiah not only saw conditions arising in his day, but he was peering into the future when the deepest darkness of all time would engulf the earth...

The “Piece Process” grinds on as the world continues to align itself against Israel and
our government continues to stiff our only ally in the Middle East. As politicians continue
to meddle in the region, we need to remember the Biblical basis of Israel’s right to the land.
It doesn’t belong to the Palestinians...or the UN...or the U.S...or even Israel! It is the Lord’s.
In a larger sense, “the Earth is the Lord’s and the fulness thereof.”1 And yet, it is im-
portant to realize that God has singled out a specific piece of real estate for His own special
purposes and put His name on it.2
Place your finger in your Bible at Genesis Chapter 12. Place another finger at Acts

those two fingers—most of the Bible—is all about Israel!

LANDGOD HAS MADE SOME IRREVOCABLE, UNILATERAL COVENANTS TO ISRAEL, AND ONE OF THE

enants. We need a doctrinal as well as devotional understanding of the
Word of God, so we need to fully understand these irrevocable com-
mitments.
God has made some irrevocable, unilateral covenants—formal
commitments or promises—and one of His most essential character-
istics is that He delights in making and keeping His promises. One of
the most disturbing shortcomings of many modern churches is their
failure to appreciate the seriousness of these covenants. There are four,
in particular, that are absolutely vital for an understanding of both the
Old and New Testaments: The Abrahamic Covenant, the Land Cov-
enant, the Davidic Covenant, and the New Covenant (from which
the New Testament gets its name).
Abrahamic Covenant
It may come as a surprise to realize that Abraham was a Gentile
when this covenant was first made!3 It first occurs in Genesis Chap-
ter 12 and includes seven4 “I Wills”:
1) And I will make of thee a great nation,
2) and I will bless thee,
3) and make thy name great;
4) and thou shalt be a blessing:
5) And I will bless them that bless thee,
6) and curse him that curseth thee: 7) and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
Genesis 12:2-3
From these “Seven I Wills” flow God’s entire plan for all of mankind—including
you and me! All other covenants build on this one. Items 5 and 6 are also the basis for the
“Sheep and Goat Judgment” of the nations in Matthew 25:31-46, which closes the “times
of the Gentiles.” God foreknew Satan’s anti-Semitism. All history is patterned and des-
tined after this reality (cf. Zech 2:8). This also indicates that the Church will not be in the
Tribulation, as this judgment emphasizes the distinction between Jew and Gentile. It will be
the Discriminator during the Tribulation period (cf. Rom 10:12; Col 3:11, et al.).

Item 7 is alluded to by
Christ when He was talk-
ing with the woman at the
well in Samaria, when He
declared, “Salvation is of the
Jews.”5 There is no other
such promise to any other
people!
So how do we get our
benefit from this covenant?
We rely entirely on our
derivative benefit from the
Root of David, the Lion of
the Tribe of Judah, Yeshua
HaMeshiach, Jesus the Messiah.
Formally Solemnized
This covenant was confirmed by the most solemn pro-
cedure known at the time. When two participants wanted
to confirm a solemn oath, they would participate in a ritual
in which a blood sacrifice would be divided into two parts,
and both would walk between the elements in a “Figure-8,”
repeating the terms of the agreement.6 The Hebrew word for
covenant, tyrIB, comes from the verb, barath, which means to
“cut”; “to cut a covenant.”
In Genesis 15:6-21, God performs just such a solemn
ritual, but first puts Abraham in a deep sleep, and is then seen
passing between the pieces alone, signifying the unilateral nature
of the unconditional covenant. The imagery itself is interest-
ing: God was represented by a metal-smith’s kiln7 and a burning
torch.8
The key point that God is making is that the covenant was
unilateral: there was no commitment required of Abraham; he was in a deep sleep at the time.
It was entirely by grace; no performance was required.

The New Testament also declares the Abrahamic Covenant to be immutable and unchangeable.
Unconditionally Confirmed
This covenant was expressly declared eternal, and is therefore unconditional.9 Further-
more, it was reconfirmed by an oath! 10
It was also confirmed by the birth of Isaac and Jacob,
and to both of whom the promises are repeated in their original
form.11 (It is extremely significant that the later reiterations of
the covenant are in spite of acts of disobedience.)
The New Testament also declares the Abrahamic Cov-
enant to be immutable and unchangeable.12 So why is this
passage so critical for us to understand? There are at least two
important reasons:
1) The Possibility of National Judgment
As one recognizes the moral free-fall of the United States, and the fact that it has come
to represent all that God abhors, the question is frequently asked, “Will God judge Ameri-
ca?” Or even, “Why hasn’t God judged America already?” These are serious and legitimate
questions. A common explanation is because of the Abrahamic Covenant! Genesis 12:2-3
is still in effect. “I will bless them that bless thee.” One can profile the destiny of nations
and empires by their treatment of the Jews. Where is the British Empire today? Where is the
Third Reich today?
The disturbing implica-
tion of this perspective is that
America appears to be turning
its back on Israel. While “He
that keepeth Israel neither
slumbers nor sleeps,”13 we
may be removing the very
shield from an overdue
judgment by ignoring this
ancient commitment of the
Creator Himself. There is a
specific judgment for failing
to acknowledge His role as
14 / UPDATE / MAY 2012 ORDERCOVER CONTENTS
Creator and that may have already
begun.14
2) Endemic Heresies
Another reason we need to be
clear on this covenant is the irrevo-
cability of God’s commitments in
these covenants and the false teach-
ing that has permeated many of the
modern churches. There is a view
that Israel “forfeited her promises”
by rejecting her Messiah, and that
these promises now devolve some-
how symbolically, or allegorically, upon the Church.16
This is the very heresy which led to the Holocaust, and the rise of this same heresy
again in these days will lead to the next one. And the next one will be far more severe than
even the previous disaster. The Holocaust in Europe destroyed one Jew in three. The next
one apparently will destroy two out of three.17
There are many dangers in not taking the Word of God seriously. And there are many
ways of not taking it seriously: one can ignore it; one can disbelieve or deny it; or, one can
dilute its meaning by conjectures, allegories, or redefinitions. But
God says what He means, and means what He says.
Furthermore, these 66 books, although penned by over 40
authors over thousands of years, are an integrated design: every de-
tail is intricately tied to everything else. It is imperative for us to
understand each part in its relation to the rest in its entirety.
The Abrahamic Covenant is but one immutable prelude to
the other covenants and the foundation upon which God’s des-
tiny for you and me rests.18
Israel and the Church
The Nation Israel and the Church each have distinct origins
and destinies. As we explore the contrasts between Israel and the

Church, we note Stephen’s remarkable summary before the Sanhedrin: all through history they ini-

Church through the ages, we need to carefully explore the seven epistles
of our Lord Himself in which He expresses His concerns.19 We need to
understand the unique challenges and predicaments of each of the repre-

We are in the season of the Biblical spring feasts. Actually, we
are now in the time of the counting of the Omer, the 50 days
between Passover and Shavuot (Pentecost). The spring feasts
begin at the time of the first barley harvest and end with the
last wheat harvest. This is the time of year in which I love to meditate
on the Biblical meaning of wheat and the harvest. Knowing that the
Church was born on Shavuot, this season has special meaning to us
today.
Historically, Shavuot was also known as Hag Habikkurim, or The
Festival of First Fruits (not to be confused with the Feast of Firstfruits
in the month of Nisan). This was the first day on which individuals
could bring their first fruit harvest from the seven species for which
Israel was known: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and
dates. Ancient Israeli farmers would tie a reed around the first ripen-
ing fruits from each of these species in their fields. At the time of the
harvest, the fruits within the reed would be cut and placed in baskets
woven of gold and silver.
The baskets were then placed on oxen whose horns were ceremoni-
ously gilded and laced with flowers. The oxen were led in magnificent
processions to Jerusalem. These processions were accompanied by mu-
sic and celebrations. It was (and is) a time of thanksgiving—for return-
ing to the Lord the first portion of the bounty He has provided.

It was with this picture in my mind that I just read the
article, “How To I.D. Genetically Modified Food at the Su-
permarket.”1 Indeed, I had to ask the question. To what god
is given the first fruits offering of a GMO (genetically modified
organism) harvest?
GMO
The concept of GMO is not new. The process of genetically
modifying an organism (GMO) or genetically engineering an or-
ganism (GEO) was formalized when Herbert Boyer founded the
first company, Genentech. In 1978, the company announced
the creation of an E. coli strain producing the human protein
insulin.
These genetic engineering techniques are commonly known
as recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology. In his 2007 primer,

On the basis of that statement, the FDA spokesper-son said no safety studies were necessary and that “Ultimately, it is the food producer who is responsible for assuring safety.”

Smith describes this technology:
rDNA molecules are DNA sequences that result from the use of molecular cloning to bring
together genetic material from multiple sources, creating sequences that would not otherwise
be found in biological organisms. Recombinant DNA is pos-
sible because DNA molecules from all organisms share the same
chemical structure; they differ only in the sequence of nucleotides
within that identical overall structure. Consequently, when
DNA from a foreign source is linked to the host sequences that
can drive DNA replication and then introduced into a host
organism, the foreign DNA is replicated along with the host
DNA. [emphasis mine]
It was not long before experimentation leaped from
pharmaceutical to agricultural uses. By 1986, opponents
of biotechnology repeatedly delayed genetic engineering ex-
periments by companies such as Advanced Genetic Sciences
and Monsanto Company. The early 1990s brought guid-
ance from the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of
the United Nations) and WHO (World Health Organization).

God Move Over
The glowing promises within the writings of Monsanto, however, painted a picture
the world without God wanted to believe. Imagine feeding the world
and cleaning up the environment with Mon- santo’s new
technology. Fascination swirled around the
idea of …swapping genes between species,
creating designer organisms that could
reduce manufacturing waste, turning

anything from
lifesaving drugs to
insect-resistant plants.
With eager anticipation of
the coming new millennium, cau-
tion was ignored and the approvals for
large-scale, commercial cultivation of geneti-
cally modified plants began in the mid-1990s in
Canada and the United States.
The response of the Food and Drug Administration of
the U.S. (FDA) was completely irresponsible:
The agency is not aware of any information showing that foods
derived by these new methods differ from other foods in any meaningful or uniform way.
On the basis of that statement, the FDA spokesperson said no safety studies were nec-
essary and that “Ultimately, it is the food producer who is responsible for assuring safety.”
In the decade that followed, lawsuits brought the truth into the light of day. The FDA
was forced to release 44,000 pages of documents that revealed government scientists’ “ref-

erences to the unintended negative effects….were progressively deleted from drafts of the
policy statement (over the protests of agency scientists).”
Additionally, documents revealed that the FDA was under orders from “the White
House” to promote GM [genetically modified] crops and that Michael Taylor, Monsanto’s
former attorney and later its vice president, was brought into the FDA to supervise policy
development.
The god of Mammon
By 2007, it appeared that the concept of genetically mod-
ified foods from engineered seed was beginning to unravel.
Continued lawsuits and public awareness were costing
billions of dollars. However, the first fruit offer-
ings to the god of mammon had been paid
and GM seeds were now big business.
(As an example, Monsanto,
the world’s supplier of over 90% of GM seeds, reported net
sales in fiscal year 2011 of over $8.5 billion for seeds and
genomics alone.)
What began as a takeover of the corn and
soybean (as well as other seeds) markets grew
to incorporate wheat. According to pre-
ventive cardiologist, William Davis,
MD, today’s “wheat” isn’t wheat.
The wheat products sold to you
today are nothing like the wheat
products of our grandmother’s age,
very different from the wheat of the
early 20th Century, and completely
transformed from the wheat of the Bible.
According to Lucy Sharratt, Coordinator
of the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network, “Widespread farmer and consumer resis-
tance defeated GM wheat in 2004 and this global rejection remains strong.” However, by

July 2009, Monsanto announced new research into GM wheat that caused industry groups
to kick their promotions into high gear.
A Matter of Semantics
However, there is also a new product, classified as “hybridized” wheat—technically
non-GMO, which now
plagues the wheat fields
of the world. In biology
and, specifically, genetics,
the term hybrid has sev-
eral meanings, all referring
to the offspring of sexual
reproduction. Generally, hybridization techniques fall with the range of “traditional breed-
ing methods.”
International chemical company BASF has collaborated with a variety of Ameri-
can universities to develop a new breed of wheat. One such collaboration resulted in
Clearfield® wheat, now planted on nearly a million acres across America.
To read the promotional materials of BASF, Clearfield® wheat is the perfect answer
to the objections to GMO seed. According to the Clearfield wheat market manager for
BASF:
The desire and need for the Clearfield technology is strong. The Clearfield Production system
for wheat has been developed and marketed by BASF in conjunction with University partners
and private seed company partners to provide growers with non-GMO, herbicide-tolerant
seeds. These agreements will ensure seed quality across very different geographic areas by
allowing the development of new Clearfield wheat varieties adapted to local conditions.
To refer to the hybridized Clearfield wheat as “non-GMO” is a matter of semantics.
This genetic variant of wheat is created by a process called chemical mutagenesis. Wheat
seeds are exposed to the chemical sodium azide, NaN3. Sodium azide is toxic to animals,
bacteria, and humans. Human ingestions of small quantities results in side-effects similar
to cyanide ingestion.2

Just Say No
On January 16th, BASF announced it was moving the headquarters of BASF Plant Sci-
ence from Limburgerhof, Germany to Raleigh, North Caro-
lina. Dr. Stefan Marcinowski, member of the Board of Execu-
tive Directors of BASF and responsible for plant biotechnology,
stated:
We are convinced that plant biotechnology is a key technology for
the 21st century. However, there is still a lack of acceptance for
this technology in many parts of Europe—from the majority of
consumers, farmers, and politicians. Therefore, it does not make
business sense to continue investing in products exclusively for
cultivation in this market. We will therefore concentrate on the attractive markets for plant
biotechnology in North and South America and the growth markets in Asia.
European activist, Adrian Bebb, Friends of the Earth Europe, joined with other voices
praising the departure of BASF:
This is another nail in the coffin
for genetically modified foods in
Europe. No one wants to eat
them and few farmers want to
grow them. This is a good day for
consumers and farmers and opens
the door for the European Union
to shift Europe to greener and
more publicly acceptable farming.
Hungry People
The FAO (Food and Ag-
riculture Organization of the
United Nations) reported that

percent by 2050 to meet the de-

mands of a world population that is expected to grow from 7 billion to 9 billion people. In
addition, the FAO reported that food prices climbed to the highest rate last year on the back
of surging grain prices.
Paul Conway, vice chairman of Cargill Inc., the U.S. farm commodities trader, made
an interesting observation when addressing the Kingsmen sugar conference in Dubai in
February:
The world’s farmers, some of the smartest businessmen that there are, can produce enough food
to feed the next two billion people. We are very confident about that. However, they need help.
Based upon FAO estimates, as many as 925 million people already
faced hunger worldwide in 2010. This was partially in response to the
2008 food price crisis. Countries from India and Egypt to Vietnam
and Indonesia banned exports of rice, a food staple for half of the
world. In 2010, Russia banned grain exports after the country’s worst
drought in at least half a century destroyed crops and cut production.
When Ukraine also restricted exports, a spike in grain prices circled the
globe.
This is the mounting crisis to which companies such as Monsanto
and BASF are positioned to respond with GMO or hybridized seed.
However, at what cost?
Implications
There is an interesting parallel between the spiritual and the natu-
ral implications of Shavuot in this age of the Laodicean church. There
is a gospel being delivered to starving people devoid of the Bread of
Life that can feed and nourish them—just as the world will deliver
modified wheat and grain for food devoid of life-sustaining nutrients
and reproductive seed. Genesis 8:22 declares:
While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and
summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.
Perhaps the greatest lesson is that everything will reproduce (or
not) after its own kind. <<<

What is the reasoning that leads to belief in God? When talk-
ing to an atheist, trying to prove the existence of God using
the Bible will not be considered a valid argument. Some-
times, the only way to convince a person of God’s existence is
through pure logic. How would one respond to an atheist’s claim that
there is no God? A belief in God is a process based on three types of
reasons.
1) Intellectual Reasons
This line of reasoning is based on a set of facts about God you
believe to be true. If you investigate these facts and find the evidence
compelling, you believe He exists. If the evidence is found wanting,
you either disbelieve or take on an agnostic1 worldview.
2) Personal Reasons
A person does not come to a belief in God by purely intellectual
reasoning. Such belief is also a very personal one and these reasons
vary. Some people have bad experiences and tragedies in their life as
well as difficulties and disappointments. Some people will take these
experiences and say, “I really need God in my life. I can’t get through this
alone and I need help beyond my own understanding.”
Others will take these same set of circumstances and say either “I
don’t need a God who lets something like this happen,” or “If there really was a God, He wouldn’t
WHY IS IT SO HARD FOR SOME PEOPLE TO BELIEVE IN GOD? THE ANSWERS WOULD PROBABLY BE LINKED TO PERSONAL, SOCIAL, AND POSSIBLY SOME INTELLECTUAL REASONS. LET’S EXPLORE THIS IN MORE DETAIL...

have let this happen.” Belief in
God is a very personal experi-
ence and that belief (or disbe-
lief ) is seen through the lens
of one’s own experience.
3) Social Reasons
There is a field study
called “The Sociology of
Knowledge” popularized
by Karl Mannheim (1893-
1947), a professor of sociol-
ogy and economics at the
University of Frankfurt.
Mannheim posited that one
tends to believe in the same things as people whom you want to befriend. These are people
that you need, are dependent on, or are in a group you want to be associated with. A simpler
way to say it is “peer pressure.” The group’s beliefs seem to be
more reasonable than those people with whom you do not want
to be associated.
The most obvious example of this is the common problem
of raising children in a Christian home. They read their Bible;
they go to church and Sunday school. Then they are off on their
own, either in their teen years at home or off to college. Many
will fall in with the “wrong crowd.” If they do not have a strong
Christian background and really know Christ and know why
Christ is our Redeemer, they can become lost.
They find that their “new friends” may not have the same value system they do and may
lose their faith in God.2 Conversely, if these same people find friends with their same world-
view, the same love of God, their faith can be reinforced. It is much easier to go along with
the temper of one’s peer group than to set the tone for the group. As evangelist Ben Courson
once put it, “It is harder to be a thermostat than a thermometer.” Belief or non-belief in God
cannot be reduced to just one of these factors. All three factors are in play.
It is much easier to go along with the temper of one’s peer group than to set the tone for the group.

Personal suf-fering, the experience of suffering or the philosophical questions of suffering do not disprove the existence of God.
Why Believe in God?
Bringing a person to a belief is a process. This process consists of three steps:
1) It takes as much faith to not believe in God as it does to believe in God.
2) It takes more of a leap of faith in the dark to disbelieve in God than to
believe in God.
3) While one can reason to a point of probability that there is a God, it takes
personal commitment to get to know that God exists as a certainty.
If one progresses through these three steps, they can come to know God. In this article,
we will explore the first step:
1) It takes as much faith to not believe in God as it does to believe in God.
The following are some of the arguments that are brought up to prove there is no God.
Evil and Suffering
The first one is the argument from evil and suffering. This is the argument: There is
senseless evil in the world. Given that pointless evil, there may
be a God who’s good but not powerful enough to stop it or there
may be a God who’s all-powerful enough but not good enough
to want to stop it.
But given evil and suffering in the world there can’t be an
all-good and all-powerful God or he would stop it and therefore
the God of the Bible cannot exist.
One of the leading philosophers of today is William Alston
of Syracuse University who recently wrote that the effort to
demonstrate that evil disproves the existence of God “is now ac-
knowledged on (almost) all sides to be completely bankrupt.”
When you say there can’t be a God because of all the point-
less evil in the world, here is the question, “How do you know it
is pointless?”
The only answer is that the reason is not apparent. So the premise is, “If one cannot
think of a good reason for God to allow suffering to continue, there can’t be any.” That
28 / UPDATE / MAY 2012 ORDERCOVER CONTENTS
“If there really is a God, how could His believers have done so much evil in the history of the world?”
means that if you have a God that is big enough to be mad at for evil and suffering, then
you have a God that is powerful enough to allow evil and suffering to continue. You can’t
have it both ways.
There are people that have had terrible things happen to them in their life and they
turned from God. At the same time, there are many people who had every bit as much suf-
fering and that suffering turned them toward God.
Personal suffering, the experience of suffering, or the philo-
sophical question of suffering do not disprove the existence of God.
The Question of Violence and Oppression in the Name of God
This is also a concept called “The Hitchens Argument” against
the reality of God. The argument is as follows: “If there really is a
God, how could his believers have done so much evil in the history
of the world?”
The answer to that lies not in the reality of God, but in the
human heart. There
must be something
in Man that is so per-
verse, so prone to vio-
lence and oppression
that it can actually
twist any worldview,
any philosophy, and
any state of belief
with regard to God
into violence.
Japanese milita-
rism of World War
II had its roots in
Buddhism and Shin-
toism. From Christi-
anity came everything

from the Crusades of the 11th
and 12th century to people of
today shooting abortion doc-
tors. Out of Islam comes global
terrorism.
However, out of athe-
ism came Stalin, the ovens of
Dachau, Mao’s “Great Leap
Forward,” and the Khmer
Rouge in Cambodia.
There is a Polish poet,
Czesław Miłosz, who wrote
“The Discreet Charms of Nihil-
ism.”2 In it he writes that if
you believe there is a God, it is
fairly easy to twist that belief
into violence because one can
shape life and morals accord-
ing to one’s own personal belief without any accountability. A person could say, “I have the
truth; you don’t” and “I’m a better person; you are an inferior person” and thus impose the
“superior” person’s values, even at the point of a gun.
Ultimately, what does this mean in terms of a belief in God? It means the argument
ends in a tie. It does not disprove God nor does it disprove atheism. The theist could say,
“Look at Stalin.” The atheist could say, “Look at Christian-
ity; look at the Crusades.” This particular argument proves
nothing except the natural depravity of the human heart.
Augustine of Hippo (354–430 a.d.) offered the following
explanation:
Evil is the absence of good, in the same way as darkness is the
absence of light. It is possible for something created good to
diminish in goodness, to become corrupted. Evil crept in when creatures endowed with free
will—the angels, lesser spirits (which became demons) and human beings—turned away from

Augustine
30 / UPDATE / MAY 2012 ORDERCOVER CONTENTS
higher or more complete goods, and chose lesser ones. It is arguable
that Adam (and Satan) did not just choose merely “lesser goods”
but fundamental evils.3
Augustine argued that God allowed evil to come, so that in
the end a greater good may prevail. He also wrote that evil was
finite—limited and ultimately to be over-
come, and that good was infinite (as God
is to reign in heaven—the eternal city of
God).
Therefore, God did not cause sin to
happen, but when sin came into the world,
He chose to allow it to occur so that a
greater good could emerge. What appears
to be evil at first may be seen as a path to-
ward a greater good.
The death of Christ on the cross was
an evil, but the ultimate good—the tri-
umph of salvation—came out of it.
Atheists will admit the existence of
good, altruism, philanthropy, etc. is a prob-
lem for their worldview, because it does not
make evolutionary sense as it would if chance creation and natural
selection were true. Atheists are left with the reality of evil.
Next month we will explore the last two steps of the process
of bringing a person to belief through reason:
2) It takes more of a leap of faith in the dark to disbelieve in
God than to believe in God; and,
3) While one can reason to a point of probability that there
is a God, it takes personal commitment to get to know that God
exists as a certainty.
Stay tuned! <<<
He chose to allow it to occur so that a greater good could emerge. What appears to be evil at first may be seen as a path toward a greater good.
1. In this sense, an agnos-tic worldview is one where a person says he cannot know that God even exists. The term, first coined by Thomas Huxley, covers varying degrees of skepticism. Agnostics are followers of pragmatism; their belief in something has to be scientifically verifiable, and because God is not scientifically verifiable, they leave Him out of their discus-sion. (Paul P. Enns, The Moody Handbook of Theology (Chicago, Ill.: Moody Press, 1997), 185.)
2. On a personal note, it is hard for me to believe that any thinking per-son cannot believe in God, Supreme Being, or Higher Power. I believe that most people that say they do not believe in God are merely angry at Him.

ONE CANNOT REALLY COMPREHEND WHAT IS GOING ON IN REVELATION CHAPTER 5 UNLESS ONE UNDERSTANDS THE EVENTS INVOLVED IN THE BOOK OF RUTH IN THE OLD TESTAMENT.

T his tiny four-chapter romance has been venerated in college classes for its elegance
as literature, but it also reveals a craftsmanship of prophetic anticipation unrivaled
anywhere in Scripture. (Our commentary on this book endures as one of our most

Chapter 5 unless one understands the events involved in the Book of
Ruth in the Old Testament.
The story involves a hero, Boaz, who is in the role of a goel, or
Kinsman-redeemer, whose ultimate commitment of redemption returns
the land in Bethlehem to its disenfranchised former owner, Naomi, and
who also takes a Gentile bride, Ruth.
To follow the plot, one must understand the Law of Redemp-
tion. In ancient Israel, land wasn’t sold in fee simple,1 as we are used
to. Since God was the real landowner, Israel was simply a tenant under
conditions of obedience. When land was “sold,” what the buyer re-
ceived was only the use of the land, not clear title. There were condi-
tions under which a kinsman of the seller could “redeem” the land back
to the original family. These conditions were typically noted on the
outside of the scroll defining the transaction.2
The scroll in Revelation Chapter 5 was written “within and on
the backside,” which identifies it as a deed subject to redemption. A
Kinsman of Adam, in His role as a goel, a Kinsman-redeemer, is taking

rificial Lamb. He not only purchased the land; he also purchased a Bride.
In the Book of Ruth, Naomi is in the role of Israel, exiled from her land; Boaz is her
kinsman, who performs the redemption of the land; and Ruth (a Gentile) is also purchased
for a wife.3
This “macrocode” extends to virtually every detail of the book.
It is interesting that Ruth is introduced to Boaz through an un-
named servant (functioning as the Holy Spirit). The Church, as
the Gentile “Bride of Christ,” is introduced to the ultimate Kins-
man-redeemer by the Holy Spirit also.
It is interesting that Ruth learns how to deal with this
situation from Naomi. We learn of God’s
plan of redemption through His dealings
with Israel. It is also provocative that, in
the story, Naomi learns of Boaz through
Ruth. (The implications of
that subtlety is left to the
diligent.)
The exposition
of the almost-inex-
haustible “coding”
aspects of this tiny

interesting that this pivotal
book is also associated with the

2. An example of this was when Jeremiah, despite the impending Baby-lonian captivity, was instructed to purchase land from the son of his uncle Hanameel. He, of course, would never benefit from this pur-chase. The deed was secreted in an earthen jar in anticipation when his heirs would return after the captivity and claim it (Jeremiah 32:6-15).

Over the last several months, we have been examining what it means to “love” God. Our
conclusion was that to love Him means “being totally given over to Him,” “relin-
quishing our wills and our lives to Him,” and “putting Him first
in everything we do.” When we love God like this (being open
and cleansed vessels), not only will His Love be able to come forth
from our hearts, but also His supernatural power. This power is what
enables us to become sanctified, to partake of His Life, to overcome the
world, the flesh and the devil, and finally, to produce “fruit.”
Let’s continue to delve into the empowering aspect of God’s Life. As
we said in the last article, the source of all power is God. It’s His saving
power, His pardoning power (Matthew 9:6), His infinite power (Mat-
thew 28:18), His power over nature (Luke 8:24), and His life-giving
power (John 17:2; John 10:10). For there is no other power but of
God (Romans 13:1).
Amazingly, a small portion of this immense power is given to every
believer by the Holy Spirit at his new birth—it is part of the Life of
God that He instills in our hearts. Therefore, this supernatural power
resides in every Christian, but it requires a submitted and sanctified life
in order to partake of it. Just like God’s Love, it can be quenched and

The Ministry of God’s Supernatural Power
Let’s review then the ministry of God’s divine power. How exactly does God’s super-
natural power work in a believer?
Before we become believers, God’s Spirit of power works with us (para), leading and
drawing us to Himself (Acts 19:2). We can all remember how God wooed, courted, and
pursued us. We might even call Him the “Hound of Heaven.”
In response to our personal invitation, God’s Spirit of power comes in us (en) and in-
dwells us. This is the time He unites our spirit with His and gives us a brand-new spirit and
heart. This is called “the new birth” or being “born again” or “justification.” This is the
time when Christ implants His eternal Life––His Love, His wisdom, and His power––in our
spirits and hearts, and we become the temple of the Holy Spirit.
See Chart 25: Indwelling of the Spirit
This is also the time that the Spirit is supposed to come upon us (epi) for the sake of em-
powering. This is called the “baptism of the Spirit” or the initial infilling of the Spirit (Acts
1:8). Jesus told His disciples: “And behold, I send the promise of My Father upon you. But
37 / UPDATE / MAY 2012 ORDERCOVER CONTENTS
tarry in the city of Jerusalem until ye be endued with power from on high” (Luke 24:49. See
also Matthew 3:11; Acts 1:5). The baptism of the Spirit is God breaking through the soulish
and physical realm. It’s the beginning of our “outer man” (our soul) being subjected to our
“spirit man” (our spirit). It’s God’s power to become a genuine witness of Christ, not just in
our words, but also in our lives.
See Chart 26: Empowering of the Spirit
Without this initial empowering, however, we will be just like believers who have a
“form of godliness,” but who “deny the power within” (2 Timothy 3:5). In other words,
they know the Scriptures in their heads, but they don’t allow the power of God to come
forth and transform their lives.
(The indwelling and the empowering of the Holy Spirit should happen at the very same
time. But for many of us, because we didn’t know enough to ask for the empowering, they
occurred on two separate occasions, many years apart.)
38 / UPDATE / MAY 2012 ORDERCOVER CONTENTS
After we have been indwelt and empowered by God’s resurrection power, we must daily
be refilled (pleroo) with His Spirit of power from the inside out. “Wherefore be ye not un-
wise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is, and be not drunk with wine, wherein is
excess; but be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:17–18).
The verb be filled here means “to be continually filled and empowered, not allowing the
Spirit to be quenched.”
This step differs from the first two steps in that it’s now our responsibility (our choice)
to stay cleansed and sanctified, so we can be refilled and empowered. This does not happen
automatically. It is God’s will, but it is our choice whether or not we do it.
See Chart 27: Refilled with the Spirit
This last step is the beginning of the process called sanctification.
39 / UPDATE / MAY 2012 ORDERCOVER CONTENTS
Having, therefore, these promises, dearly beloved, let us
cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit,
perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
2 Corinthians 7:1
Our job is to make the right faith choices. God is
the One who empowers us.
Consequently it’s imperative that we not stop at
the first step of salvation—our justification—but that
we go on to the next phase, which is our sanctifica-
tion. “If we live in the Spirit [if we are born-again],
[we must learn to] also walk in the Spirit” (Galatians
5:25. See also Ephesians 5:18). It’s the Spirit of
Christ’s resurrection power that not only renews our
minds and transforms our lives, but also enables us to walk
by His Spirit.
The Spirit brings us to Christ and gives us His Life, then He em-
powers us to reflect Him in all we do. Our job, then, is to stay cleansed, filled, and empow-
ered.
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God,
and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in
despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken, cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in
the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, [so] that the Life also of Jesus might be made manifest
in our body.
2 Corinthians 4:7-10
The excellency of the power must be of God and not ourselves. God promises us that in
the end, He will raise us up by this same power as He did Christ (Romans 8:11).
God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by His own power.
1 Corinthians 6:14b

For thousands of years most of us have either had or still hold to misconceptions. Is there a hidden conflict—a reality that is normally hidden from our view? Is it real? Does it directly affect the world in which we live?
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wicked-ness in high places. Ephesians 6:12
