Case studies

Threat

The lead singer of an all-female country band was vocal about the band’s political stance and made strong statements to that effect during a live concert. Subsequently, members of the band were criticized and received hate mail threatening to harm the lead singer while they were on tour. The threats were especially concerning for the band members as they were touring with their babies and other family members.

Kidnap

A US sports star from Latin America went home for the winter to play on his local team. While at his family home, four men entered the house and forced the player to go with them at gunpoint. The kidnappers forced the star in to a waiting SUV and drove away, intending to demand a high ransom for their celebrity victim. The press published details of the player’s estimated annual earnings which further exacerbated the situation.

Kidnap

A couple were on vacation at an exclusive African resort when armed bandits broke in to their secluded hut and demanded money. The bandits stole cash and items from the room and then forced the couple in to a waiting speedboat and drove away. A lengthy negotiation process ensued between the kidnappers and the US family of the victims. Finally, after a seven-month ordeal, the couple were released in exchange for a hefty ransom payment.

Extortion

After a series of scheduling errors, the CEO of an investment firm had to fire his personal assistant. Some weeks later the CEO received an anonymous letter displaying his personal details and threatening to harm his family unless a payment of $50,000 was made. The CEO initially ignored the letter but the correspondence increased and gave increasingly graphic accounts of violent acts. The response firm conducted a detailed investigation into the extortion, providing protection for the CEO and his family. Eventually, the assistant was arrested on suspicion of writing the letters.

Travel evacuation

A US executive was working on a business project in Egypt when heavy protests broke out. His family was also in the country for the duration of the project and were concerned for their safety. The response firm advised them to leave while commercial flights were still available. Getting to the airport, however, presented a problem. The security firm were able to assist the family in getting through the road blocks to the airport. The family flew to a place of safety in Europe before heading on to the US. The cost of both flights was covered under the K&R policy.
