If you carry a handgun for personal defense, a tactical flashlight is not just a nice-to-have accessory, but a vital tool you must have,

particularly when you find yourself in anything less than full daylight. the modern compact tactical flashlight is truly a purpose-built device made from lightweight materials designed to withstand hard impact and perform in all weather conditions. it helps you safely navigate unfamiliar terrain, discriminate friend from foe, identify targets, and see your sights. But how do you use it effectively?

Having a light on you at all times is the first step. After all, a light is not just for nighttime use but for any diminished light environment you might encounter during the day when your vision could be handicapped.

next, become proficient with the various hold techniques that enable you to safely use a flashlight in conjunction with a firearm: Harries, Ayoob, chapman, rogers, neck/cheek, and FBi. Keep in mind that one technique may not work for all situations, modes of carry, body shapes, or physical abilities, so a solid understanding of all techniques is important.

three things are key to any technique: (1) Deploy the firearm before the flashlight - this keeps you from muzzling your body under stress and keeps you safe. (2) Get proper training in diminished light tactics from a quality training organization. (3) Practice, practice, practice!

What about gun-mounted lights? they have a place, but for self-defense use with a handgun, a handheld light is king. We can use it for searching, navigating, and not running into walls, all without pointing the muzzle of a loaded firearm at everything, and everybody, we look at. ■

ayoob: With the light deployed to the non-shooting side of the gun, it’s easy to orient the beam toward the target or up, into a bad guy’s eyes.

rogers (surefire): Lets you hold the hand-gun in a normal two-handed grip and activate the light by squeezing the hand to push the tailcap switch into the palm. Also called the "syringe" or "cigar" method.

chapman: Brings the light beam di-rectly parallel to the bore of the hand-gun. Easy to access a tailcap switch with thumb of the gun hand, and leaves three fingers free to help support the gun.

fbi: Light is held in your weak hand high above your head at the full extension of your arm, so you can easily illuminate the surrounding area.

neck/cheek indexed: "Ice pick" grip positions the light right below the ear, close to jaw and neck, for good stability. Wes’s go-to technique, though he cautions to learn it carefully – it’s frequently misunderstood.
