1.1 Introduction

In this section, we highlight the importance of having a good image and the positive influence it can have

on all aspects of our everyday lives.

Now, more than ever, individual image is of vital importance. You may want a carefully groomed look, a

head-turning up-to-the-minute fashion statement or street grunge. Every image you choose takes effort and

planning to make it work to best effect, even a messy and casual one.

Your outward appearance is your letter of presentation. Your choice of style, colors and finish says a lot

about you. With skill and attention, you can make sure a carefully styled image helps you present yourself at

your absolute best and opens many doors.

In this first module, we introduce you to all the different areas you'll cover during the course. As you

progress, you'll get to know yourself and your personal style better and how to make the most of your

beauty.

1.2 Concept development

The term self-image encompasses all aspects that influence your image. We’ll take you through all the skills

you can develop or improve to perfect the image that suits you best.

You'll learn about skin care and make up regimes to suit every day, special occasions and night time. We’ll

show you the importance of choosing your clothes in color palettes that enhance your skin tone and how

they can even lift your mood.

Your morphological study shows how to analyze your body shape, how to highlight certain areas for best

effect and, if you need to, draw attention away from some areas.

Image changes with age. We show you how it’s more important to interpret fashion to suit your stage in life

than to slavishly follow current trends. Fashion needs to adapt to suit you, not you to suit fashion. Every new

trend can have many levels of sophistication.

You'll find as you build your knowledge and skills and apply these to your own image your self-esteem will

also grow. Confidence in yourself is the brightest glow you can have and is an integral part of improving

your appearance. People around you will immediately respond positively when you have faith in yourself.

1.3 Importance of Self Image

Your first impression always has a big impact. Everything you choose to complete your appearance gives

information about you. You want your image to speak highly of you.

Much of the time our appearance may be planned haphazardly or we may not see ourselves objectively -

how others view us. Individual garments may be chosen without regard to a complete look that works well.

We may develop a favorite make up routine and rely on the same look no matter what the occasion.

Investing in this course means you can be your own image consultant and learn the skills you need to always

choose an image that not only looks well but is appropriate for each situation you engage in. For example,

we’ll take you through the kind of styling, makeup and hair suitable for an interview.

First impressions make a big impact.

Many messages are communicated through your physical appearance, especially the first time you meet

someone new.

There needs to be consistency between your way of life, how you dress and the image you project.

Also, looking well to everyone you meet improves your self-esteem and your social and professional

relationships.

It’s important to develop some guidelines which help you determine which look is right for every

occasion so you’ll always be suitably dressed.

Case Study: How to dress for a job interview.

It might feel daunting to think about what to wear for a job interview but if you follow some simple rules

it’s easy.

Firstly, you need to know the nature of the business and position you’re being interviewed for. The dress

code will be different, for example, for a job in a bank, a fashion store or a gym. We’ll focus on how to

dress for a job in administration.

Choose a discreet outfit that’s not dramatic. You should look responsible and serious, but also relaxed

and comfortable.

Don’t wear clothing that’s very tight; in this situation it would look vulgar.

Avoid large prints and oversized accessories; they are distracting to the interviewer.

When applying your make up, choose neutral shades. Use a foundation that’s very similar to your skin

tone, subtle eye shadow and natural blusher and have your lips well moisturized.

Groom your hair as you normally do so you feel comfortable.

Avoid boots; shoes with a low heel are more suitable.

Don’t wear a strong perfume; use fresh, subtle cologne.

1.4 How your image represents you

We are what we reflect.

You're working in your office. A girl walks in with bitten fingernails, un-groomed hair, or disheveled

clothes. Does her first impression inspire you that she'll do a good job?

It may take more time and effort to present an aesthetically pleasing appearance but when it comes to having

a professional image, it’s worth it. Clothes that are cared for, manicured nails, light make up and clean,

groomed hair give others around you confidence that you care and are willing to apply appropriate attention

to yourself. This will automatically indicate you’ll be similar in your approach to your job.

We can't emphasize enough the importance of everything you choose to complete your appearance. Suiting

your eye color, choosing your perfume and wearing appropriate clothes you like and feel comfortable in

means when you’re judged by your appearance, you'll come out on top.

In this first introductory module we don't start with exercises or examinations. Rather, we want you to look

in the mirror and like what you see. Devote time to getting to know your style, your taste, what you're happy

with and what you’d like to enhance.
