USDA ORGANIC:

Agricultural products labeled “100 Percent Organic” and “Organic”

Products labeled as “100 percent organic” must contain (excluding

water and salt) only organically produced ingredients and processing

aids.

Products labeled “Organic” must consist of at least 95 percent

organically produced ingredients (excluding water and salt). Any remaining product

ingredients must consist of nonagricultural substances approved on the National List

including specific non-organically produced agricultural products that are not

commercially available in organic form.

Natural Products Association:

All products that are labeled or branded “Natural” must:

Be made with at least 95% natural ingredients - excluding water.

Contain only synthetic ingredients specifically allowed under this

standard and environmentally-friendly products that are nurturing to

us and as harmless as possible to the earth.

What is “Natural”

Ingredients that come or are made from a renewable resource found in nature (Flora,

Fauna, Mineral), with absolutely no petroleum compounds.

A Synthetic non-natural ingredient can be used:

Only when there is not a readily natural alternative ingredient.

Only when there are no suspected human health risks as indicated by peer-reviewed

third-party scientific literature.

ECOCERT:

A minimum threshold of natural ingredients from organic farming to be

reached to obtain certification:

For both labels, Ecocert Standard imposes that a minimum of 95% of the

total ingredients come from natural origin.

For the Natural and Organic Cosmetic Label:

A minimum of 95% of all plant-based ingredients in the formula and a minimum of 10% of all

ingredients by weight must come from organic farming.

For the Natural Cosmetic Label:

A minimum of 50% of all plant-based ingredients in the formula and a minimum of 5% of all

ingredients by weight must come from organic farming.

Some ingredients very frequently found in cosmetics (water, salts, minerals) cannot be certi-

fied as organic because they are not sourced from farming. For example, shampoos and

some creams, mostly composed of water, contain between 10% and 40% organic ingredi-

ents, and always 95% natural ingredients. An essential oil, which does not contain water,

can be up to 100% organic ingredients.

Personal Care Applications Laboratory

Natural cosmetics is a trend that will only grow in importance as consumers become more savvy about the ingredients they eat as

well as what they put on their skin. Brenntag Specialties plans to be at the forefront of the natural market segment by offering

customers novel natural ingredients and assistance in formulating with them. This fully equipped applications laboratory will focus

on personal care formulations, while intending to promote new ideas and concepts as consumer demands change.

The primary goal of the Personal Care Applications Lab is to develop starting formulas for the color cosmetics, skin care, and hair

care markets. Each year the Personal Care Applications Lab debuts new hair care, skin care, and color cosmetic prototype

formulations at industry trade shows. These prototypes serve to showcase trends in the personal care market, as well as unique

uses for ingredients offered by Brenntag Specialties. Many of these formulations have a natural focus and highlight the natural

ingredients within our portfolio.

In addition to developing prototype formulations for each of these markets, the Applications Lab also assists customers with

changes to existing formulas or the development of new products.
