In spite of all these, his family was keen to ensure the best possible education to young Narayanan. However, he had to go through difculties during his school days, like walking about 15 km every day to school and later to the CMS College in Kottayam. He passed the BA (Literature) Honours Exam- ination from the Maharaja’s College (University College), Thiruvanan- thapuram with First Class and First Rank. The University denied him a chance to join as a lecturer, which he well merited and desperately wanted, simply because he hailed from a back- ward community. Instead, the author- ities offered him the job of a clerk, which he did not accept. In protest, he refused to accept his degree (Fifty years later, when he had become the Vice- President of India, the same uni- versity requested him to accept the degree, which he gracefully accepted). After unsuccessful attempts to become a lecturer, Narayanan left for Delhi and became a journalist. While work- ing there, he wrote to J R D Tata, a doyen of the Indian industrialists, seeking scholarship that eventually took him to the London School of Economics, where he studied under the guidance of renowned Professor Harold Lasky. On return from London, Narayanan joined the prestigious Indian Foreign Service in 1949 with the blessings of Pandit Jawa- har Lal Nehru and represented India as a diplomat in many key world capi- tals. On retiring from the Foreign Ser- vice in 1984, he entered active politics, became an MP in the 1984 election from Kerala and became Minister for Science and Technology. As a politi- cian, Narayanan was well respected by all in the political spectrum. After serving ve years as Vice-President, the support for his candidature for Presidency was almost unanimous across the nation. Self-respect was something that dened and drove K. R. Narayanan’s life. Yet he did not have the slightest of arrogance of a self- made man. Right from the rst day, he stood by his principles and never bowed before anything other than reason. This great Indian, the greatest Malayalee would be well remembered. Homage to Former President K.R. Narayanan

(Feb. 1920 - Nov. 2005)

Born at Uzhavoor in Central Kerala as the fourth of the seven children of Raman Vaidyan, a dalit, Narayanan’s family, like many families of that time,

experienced extreme social (due to the caste system) and economic stress. In spite of all these, his family was keen to ensure the best possible education to young Narayanan.
