Overview

Perpetrators of family and domestic violence choose to use violence; their behaviour

is deliberate and intentional. In most cases, there is nothing a child or adult victim

could do to stop a man from using violence.

Perpetrator accountability is about creating safety for women and children by holding

the man using violence responsible for their behaviour. In practice this includes a

range of roles and responsibilities, including consulting with the adult victim and

strengthening the mother-child bond; engaging and inviting men to take responsibility

for their behaviour; case management and referral to a men’s behaviour change

program or violence-focused individual counselling; identifying, managing and

monitoring risk; and pursuing civil and criminal justice responses.

In child protection cases where family and domestic violence is present, working

towards the safety of the adult victim and the accountability of the perpetrator can be

crucial to the safety of the child.

All agencies responding to family and domestic violence have a role in perpetrator

accountability.

Rodney Vlais from No To Violence will present a 2-day training event for child

protection workers and family and domestic violence sector staff about working

towards perpetrator accountability. Topics will include:

• links between child abuse and family and domestic violence;

• the ways in which perpetrators can harm children’s safety and well-being

through family and domestic violence;

• understanding men’s use of family and domestic violence;

• assessing and managing risk to children’s and women’s safety;

• objectives, principles and practices of engaging men who use violence,

including avoiding collusion; and

• men’s behaviour change programs including referral and monitoring of

progress.

Three training sessions will be held in the Perth metropolitan area and one each in

Albany and Broome.
