    People and permaculture

Permaculture uses observation of nature to create regenerative systems, and the place

where this has been most visible has been on the landscape. There has been a growing

awareness though that firstly, there is the need to pay more attention to the peoplecareethic, as it is often the dynamics of people that can interfere with projects, and secondly

that the principles of permaculture can be used as effectively to create vibrant, healthy

and productive people and communities as they have been in landscapes.

    Domesticated animals

Domesticated animalsare often incorporated into site design.[15

    Common practices

    Agroforestry

!groforestryis an integrated approach of using the interactive benefits from combining

trees and shrubs with crops and"or livestoc#. $t combines agricultural andforestry

technologies to create more diverse, productive, profitable, healthy and sustainable

land%use systems.[1&$n agroforestry systems, trees or shrubs are intentionally used

within agricultural systems, or non%timber forest productsare cultured in forest settings.[citation needed

'orest gardeningis a form of agroforestry that is particularly popular withpermaculturists. (umerous permaculturists are proponents of forest gardens, or food

forests, such as )raham *ell, Patric# +hitefield, Dave ac#e, -ric Toensmeier and

)eoff awton. *ell started building his forest garden in 1//1 and wrote the boo# The

Permaculture Gardenin 1//5, +hitefield wrote the boo#How to Make a Forest

Gardenin 00, ac#e and Toensmeier co%authored the two volume boo# setEdible

Forest Gardeningin 05, and awton presented the filmEstablishing a Food Forest

    in 02.[3[13[12

    Hgelkultur

4gel#ulturis the practice of burying large volumes of wood to increase soil waterretention. The porous structure of wood acts as a sponge when decomposing

underground. During the rainy season, masses of buried wood can absorb enough water

to sustain crops through the dry season.[1/This techni6ue has been used by

    permaculturalists 7epp 4ol8er,Toby 4emenway, and 9asanobu 'u#uo#a.[0[01

    Natural building

! natural buildinginvolves a range ofbuildingsystems and materials that place major

emphasis on sustainability. +ays of achieving sustainability through natural building

focus on durability and the use of minimally processed, plentiful or renewable

resources, as well as those that, while recycledor salvaged, produce healthy living

environments and maintain indoor air 6uality.

The basis of natural building is the need to lessen the environmentalimpact of buildings

and other supporting systems, without sacrificing comfort, health or aesthetics. To be

more sustainable, natural building uses primarily abundantly available, renewable, reused or recycled materials. $n addition to relying on natural building materials, the

emphasis on the architectural design is heightened. The orientation of a building, the

utili8ation of local climate and site conditions, the emphasis on natural ventilation

through design, fundamentally lessen operational costs and positively impact the

environment. *uilding compactly and minimi8ing the ecological footprintis common,

as are on%site handling of energy ac6uisition, on%site water capture, alternate sewage

    treatment and water reuse.[citation needed
