Perkins Center Newsletter Contributors: Vickie Jameson, Alan Willoughby, Kathleen PopelakEditor: Diane FelcynCatalog Design: Nancy Schmidt

A Note from theExecutive DirectorAt times, when I get overwhelmed with duedates for final reports, grant writing andbudgets, I’m tempted to streamline andspecialize what I do as the Executive Direc-tor. The classic, focus upon doing one thingand doing it well comes to mind. It’s attimes like this, when faced with multiple

priorities, I get to thinking about the relationship between special-ization and generalization.

Looking back over the years I’ve been at Perkins Center (which hasbeen quite a few!) I’d describe my management style as “handson.” I do a lot of little things and I find the opportunity to workdirectly with pretty much everyone on the staff. I’ve always feltthat to be a successful director meant focusing upon the organi-zational vision, leadership and accomplishments combined withgetting your hands dirty and doing simple, daily tasks which con-tribute to the overall operations of the Center.

Our cultural icon in education is specialization; you go to school tolearn to become something, a doctor, an electrician, a lawyer, ateacher, an artist and more. Generalization has taken on a some-what negative connotation in today’s world. I’m not sure it’s forthe better, but we’ve put liberal arts education to rest or at the veryleast, rendered it dormant. I looked up “liberal arts” in Wikipedia, which said, “The liberal arts are those subjects or skills that in clas-sical antiquity were considered essential for a free person to knowin order to take an active part in civic life…”

Now, don’t get me wrong, I respect boundaries and know the valueand efficiency in specialization. When I get together with a groupof my peers in arts administration or ceramics and we “talk thetalk” of our specialty—we sync and immerse ourselves in speakinga common language and shared experience and often come upwith insightful perspectives from the unique vantage points weare looking from. But there is a temptation for specialization tolead to disassociation, a kind of disconnect. When we see theworld in terms of our knowledge specialty it inevitably becomessomewhat distorted or skewed, unless we’ve charted a clear anddefined path back to the general…

After nearly 24 years at the helm of Perkins Center, I seem to(almost) daily deal with this delicate balance between specializa-tion and generalization. How can we go deep with the particularsunique to our field (and specialty) and the general of which thesynonyms include broad, inclusive, every day, natural, prevalent, routine, universal. How can we bring the general back into the spe-cific and create a healthy balance between specialization andgeneralization? Figure that out and we’d be a long way in solvingthe world’s problems!

Our Arts and Eco Camp, Natural Inspirations, broughtthe arts and the environment together for anotherfun-filled year. During the eight week summer pro-gram, children gained a deeper understanding ofhow art can be inspired by the natural world bymaintaining and harvesting vegetables in the Eco-Studio, visiting local museums and environment cen-ters, and of course, exploring various art mediums.

Campers enjoyed creating handmade birdfeeders, sculpting vases and garden plaques, designinghandmade seed paper, constructing animals createdin clay and papier-mâché, choreographing dancesand learning rhythm beats inspired by the ele-ments, and much more! Through our partnershipwith Sustainable Moorestown and the GrowingGivers program, every camper planted seeds andraised vegetables to the transplant age which willbe donated to community share gardens that con-tribute at least 10% of their yield to food pantriesand shelters within Burlington County. These proj-ects and activities presented campers with theopportunity to make a difference in their ecologicalimpact on the world, while making the connectionbetween the arts and environment.

28 Years of Summer Camps!

Perkins Center for the Arts Summer Arts and EcoCamp extends a heartfelt thanks to our volun-teers, funding partners, and to those who havecontributed to our Camp Hero Program.

Benefits of Music Education

n Playing a musical instrumentor taking voice lessons makesyou smarter. Many studieshave been conducted on theeffects of music on the brain.Scientists say that childrenwho are exposed to music orthose who play an instrumentdo better in school than thosewho don’t. Recent researchsuggests exposure to musicmay benefit a child’s readingage, IQ and the developmentof certain parts of the brain.Adults can benefit from learn-ing to play an instrument, too, because it helps the mind tobe alert and active, eventuallyhelping to sharpen memory.

n Learning music teaches disci-pline. Learning to play aninstrument is like learning tospeak another language and itcan be challenging at times. One of the qualities musicplayers possess is discipline. You have to be disciplined inorder to master playing yourinstrument. It is important toset a time each day to prac-tice, practice and practicesome more.

n Playing a musical instrumentor singing relieves stress.Weall have days when we are sostressed that we just want totake a break from it all. Haveyou ever noticed that whenyou hear soft, soothing musicyou feel more relaxed? Playingan instrument or singing cando that and more, especially ifyou’re the one playing orsinging. Music is one of life’ssimple joys because it helpscalm the mind.

n Playing a musical instrumentor singing gives you a senseof achievement. If you’re abeginner learning to play yourfirst piece, it can be frustrat-ing. But once you’ve masteredit, the satisfaction you’ll feel ispriceless. Never mind if it’s justa simple piece; you’ll never for-get the first piece you’ve mas-tered. You are one step closerto achieving your goal. That iscertainly something to beproud of!

n Playing a musical instrumentor singing is fun! Sure, it canbe a lot of hard work, butthere is no denying that play-ing an instrument or singing isfun! Once you get better at it,opportunities will arise for youto share your newly acquiredskill with your family andfriends. Who knows, you mightalso consider playing orsinging professionally in thefuture. But whatever path youchoose to follow, music canonly help to enhance andenrich your life.

Intermediate DrawingThe Next StepThis class takes Basic Drawing tothe next level. Most artists can’tleap from beginning drawing toadvanced without more develop-ment of their approach to form, perspective and studies of real-life objects. Where Basic Drawingliterally teaches the basics, Inter-mediate Drawing takes you to thenext level: expanding your reper-toire of drawings beyond still-lifeto the larger landscape of life–lit-erally and figuratively. Intermedi-ate Drawing will teach you toincorporate larger objects, vistasand people. This course will alsoincorporate color–adding in pas-tels and or colored pencils to adda secondary, vibrant element toyour work. PerkinsCenter for theArts

We are delighted to welcome the two newest members to the board oftrustees at Perkins Center, Rebecca Celhar and Matthew J. Simeone. Theirpassion for the arts, special skills and commitment to being involved in theircommunities are ideal qualifications for new board members!

When asked about joining the board of trustees, Rebecca responded, “Ihave a strong desire to instill in the future generations an appreciation ofand excitement for the arts. I want to provide the community the sameopportunities that I had through Perkins Center for the Arts. At the sametime, I would like to work together with the Board to introduce new ideasand events that will help keep Perkins viable and ensure that the traditionsand legacies of our town will survive.”

As a child, Rebecca took numerous classes offered at Perkins Center forthe Arts, including ballet, drawing, origami, and pottery. She continued on apath in the arts by taking classes inside and outside of school, includingparticipating in the Gifted and Talented Art Program in Moorestown PublicSchools and displaying artwork in Perkins Center’s “Young at Art” exhibitionand the Burlington County “Teen Art Show.”

Rebecca attended Rutgers University, majoring in Art History. Upon grad-uation, she accepted a job at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the Market-ing and Public Relations Department. After four years at the Museum, shedecided to pursue a career in Education and earned a Master of Arts degreein Teaching at The College of New Jersey. Upon graduation, she accepted aposition as a fourth grade teacher at the Upper Elementary School inMoorestown, where she has been working for the past six years. Rebecca’sinterests take her from interior decorating, having assisted at Pauline Vas-tardis Interiors, Inc to woodworking to upholstery. Rebecca lives with herhusband, Brian and newest addition to the family, Finnegan in Moorestown.

Matthew’s (Matt) response to joining the board of trustees was, “I havealways been impressed by Perkin’s positive value and impact both toMoorestown and Southern New Jersey. When I was approached about join-ing the board, I viewed it as a natural addition to my non-profit board workand another ideal opportunity to give back to the community.”

Matt is the Founder and President of Riverton Partners, a consulting firmwhich provides executive recruiting and organizational development serv-ices for a global clientele. Riverton Partners clients include public and pri-vate companies, as well as private capital firms and their portfolio compa-nies, in the industrial, consumer, retail, distribution, technology, and businessservices sectors.
