Business honour for Allam Marine MD

The top 100 list, published in the January issue of Management Today, places Assem, who established his Hull based business in 1981, at number 45 in its rankings.

The report highlighted the growth in Assem’s profit and sales figures over the years, and the company’s significant achievements, including attaining the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2006 for its export success.

One of Perkins’ key power generation OEMs, in 2008 Allam Marine moved to its new six-acre site in Gibson Lane, enabling the business to internally store, manufacture, distribute and administer its programme under one roof.

Perkins account manager, Lee Wheeler, said: “I’m delighted that Assem’s achievements have been recognised in this way.

“As well as being a successful businessman Assem has recently supported a number of community projects, most notably a donation for £1.5m to Hull University, enabling the facility to establish a much-needed bio-sciences research centre.”

Lee continued: “We’re very proud of the strong partnership between Perkins and Allam Marine. The two companies have worked together for the past 15 years with Allam becoming one of Perkins’ most valued OEMs.”

Assem Allam, the managing director of Allam Marine, has been named among Britain’s Top 100 Entrepreneurs for 2010.

Ghaddar powers Pepsi facility in LebanonSince its establishment in Lebanon in 1979, Ghaddar Machinery Co. has worked hard to meet the electrical power needs of many local and global businesses.

Among its recent satisfied customers is Lebanon’s PEPSICO (S.M.L.C) which provides a range of soft drink brands to the local population.

Last year Pepsi approached Ghaddar Machinery seeking a 2000 kVA generating set to continuously power its plant. It required a reliable set with no risk of production downtime or interrupted cycle.

After continuously testing the performance of the set, which is powered by a Perkins 4016-61TAG2A unit, for six months, Pepsi’s technical team expressed their satisfaction with the product. So delighted were

they with the effectiveness of the set the team advised the management to purchase a stand-by unit to work alternately with the existing set.

The new unit was delivered and commissioned in December, with Ghaddar

Machinery’s service teams continuing to undertake bi-monthly checks at the site to ensure the smooth running of the sets.

Perkins account manager, Lee Wheeler, said: “Ghaddar Machinery is one of Perkins’

long established, valued and committed customers and over the years we have developed a close and successful working relationship.

“I recently visited Ghaddar’s headquarters in Lebanon where I was able to learn more about the Pepsi project and many of the other high profile activities which the company, due to its impressive reputation for quality and customer support, is involved in.”

The new 4016-61TRG: The most powerful engine developed by Perkins, offering 2250 and 2500 kVA for prime and standby applications, respectively.

The first choice for power generationPerkins is launching a powerful addition to the 4000 Series range. Here, Power News profiles the new 4016-61TRG.

Perkins has boosted its 4000 Series Electric Power line-up with the introduction of a powerful new 16 cylinder power unit.

The 4016-61TRG diesel engine offers outstanding power density and compactness and has been developed to provide cost-effective prime and standby power.

The new engine series extends the power range upwards by ten per cent compared

to the 4016TAG2A, providing customers with greater engine choice.

Available as an ElectropaK or Elecrounit specification, the range offers an exceptional power to weight ratio and good load acceptance for both prime

and standby power.

Making use of direct injection combustion technology, the compact family of three 61-litre air to water chargecooled engines provide optimum power density for ease of installation, offering tangible benefits to both genset packagers and end users.

The 4016-61TRG range is available at 50Hz in three models; the TRG1, TRG2 and TRG3 – encompassing a range of outputs from 1850 to 2250 kVA for prime power and 2000 to 2500 kVA standby.

Allister Dennis, Perkins’ new product marketing manager said: “Our customers will undoubtedly benefit from the performance, power and excellent fuel consumption delivered by this new engine range. The introduction of the 4016-61TRG further strengthens Perkins’ presence as a full range supplier to the Electric Power market and represents a cost-effective solution to market requirements.”

Charitable donation helps children in need

The Dhaka Project seeks to improve the quality of life for Dhaka’s slum children through education, food and health care, and has long been supported with donations from Pramac.

The company, which manufactures sets at its operations in Murcia, Spain, its facility headquarters in Siena, Italy, and in Shunde, China, uses the full range of Perkins gen set engines.

Keen to continue its support for The Dhaka Project, Pramac decided to donate one of its GBW22P 20 kVA generator sets to help provide much needed power for a local school assisted by the project.

Aware that Perkins had previously supported such worthwhile causes, Ignacio González, managing director for Pramac’s

generators business unit, asked Perkins to donate a 404D-22G engine for installation in the set.

“After hearing about the good work undertaken by The Dhaka Project and the desperate need for power at the school, Perkins was eager to help,” said Claire McAllister, Perkins’ account manager for Pramac Spain.

Claire continued: “Over the years Perkins has supported a number of similar charitable projects. On this occasion I was delighted that we could work alongside Pramac to support this worthwhile project.”

New cylinder line at Wuxi plant in China

Twelve months later, in October 2011, Perkins will start manufacturing a 6-cylinder, seven litre mechanical version of the 1106, with Wuxi being the only Perkins facility to manufacture this engine.

Perkins has made a significant investment in the 1100 Series facility at Wuxi, which comprises 43,000 square metres of manufacturing space with an initial capacity of 60,000 engines a year.

Customers will benefit from a mechanical 4-cylinder product with

outputs ranging from 50kW to 74.5kW, and subsequently a 6-cylinder mechanical engine capable of producing 145kW at Tier 2 and 130kW at Tier 3. For electric power applications the 6-cylinder can offer 200kVA standby power.

Perkins’ 1100 Series is a family of 3.3, 4.0 and 6.6 litre engines with a power span from 36.9 kW (49.5 hp) to 205 kW (275 hp) which uses the appropriate technology level for compliant and non-emissions compliant territories.

Its common design gives equipment manufacturers the opportunity to enable one machine to compete cost effectively in a variety of markets with the minimum of development costs.

Gerard Steel, operations manager at Wuxi, said: “Our customers are very complimentary about how we are working with and supporting them. Our customer focus is very important to us and we have worked with customers to tailor make our support, such as sending along a section

manager on the first delivery to an OEM, to make sure everything goes well.

“Through Wuxi the 400 Series is now more readily available for original equipment manufactures with operations in China and the Asia Pacific region. Engines from the facility are also being supplied to our current global customers who wish to grow their business from a Chinese manufacturing base.”

Production of 400 Series engines at Wuxi is the first phase of development at the engine campus.

The 200,000 sq metre factory campus represents a multi-year investment plan for Perkins, building zero emissions, Stage 2, 3 and above engines for China and emerging markets.

The 400 Series is a range of 2, 3 and 4 cylinder, liquid-cooled, naturally aspirated and turbo-charged indirect injection engines covering a power span from 11 to 66.5 bhp. The range is ideal for a large variety of agricultural, construction, materials handling, general industrial and electric power applications.

A year after its opening, Perkins’ new world-class engine facility in Wuxi, China, is supplying local equipment manufacturers with quality products built on the 400 Series production line.
