A MESSAGE from our Superintendent and School Board President

Although it hardly seems possible, the leaves are beginning to change, we are near the mid-point of the first grading period, and our athletic teams are already at or past the halfway mark of their fall seasons. This year has brought several positive changes with new staff members, the excitement of our improved facilities, increased opportunities for our students to experience success, and the reconfiguration of the school district. Through the midst of this change, our district has once again achieved an excellent rating by the Ohio Department of Education. We have maintained this status for eight consecutive years, and nine of the past ten years. We are most appreciative of our community, staff, and students, because we know that it takes the entire community working

together to achieve this long-term enduring success. While we are proud of the accomplishments, we will continue to strive for improvement by providing students with opportunities, and being conservative in the way we spend our tax-payers’ money. Our focus in Perry will be to continue preparing students for graduation and success beyond high school, through developing positive relationships with students and families, providing instruction that is differentiated for individual student differences, and working to engage our students in meaningful activities both in and out of the classroom. As always, your constructive comments and active participation are encouraged and welcomed. Sincerely, John V. Richard Michael Brenner Superintendent School Board President

Her accom-plishments and service include Trauma Therapist of the Year, Co-founder of Trauma Task Force of Stark County, District Mental Health Counselor for Perry Local and Trauma and Grief Consultant for Aultman Hospital. Mrs. Whetstone states “For Margaret there are no obstacles that she cannot conquer, no student that she neglects, no veteran she does not respect, no goal she sees as impossible. Her passion is contagious and her optimism is a motivation to all around her.” Congratulation on a wonderful honor and thank you for all you do for our country and

BOARD CANDIDATES ANSWER QUESTIONS: We always provide Board candidates with an opportunity to answer questions prior to elections. 1. Why are you running for the Board of Education? 2. What is your perception of the current status of public education in Ohio? 3. What specific goals do you have for Perry Local Schools? Marlene Capuano: 1. I am a Perry graduate. I have lived in Perry most of my life. I love the school, I love kids, education and educators. I guess, very simply, I bleed Black and Gold. 2. School funding needs reformed and assessments (what a student has learned) need reformed. 3. I would like to see renovations completed at Perry High School. I would like to see Reedurban elementary eliminated and remembered for the community. I would like to see Genoa elementary eliminated and re-placed. Certainly I would love to see 100% graduation for our students. James Casey: 1. I ran for the Perry Board of Education back in 1996 because I wanted to give back to Perry Township and I had no personal agenda to push. I enjoyed the 12 years I served on the board from 1997 to 2009. I still have the desire to give back to Perry and with my past experience on the board I feel I can be a positive influence for the Perry school district. 2. There is no doubt that the State of Ohio has a great public education system. A system that is not perfect, but it is a system working to educate all of the children in Ohio. Each year we see more schools making pro-gress in raising test scores and graduation rates. Do we need more funding? Yes we do and we’ll have to keep reminding the governor and our elected officials of our financial needs. 3. First, I want to be sure we provide all the possible educational programs we can for all Perry kids, so that they get the opportunity to be the best they can be. Second, I want to work with the community to help keep Perry the excellent district it is. Third, I want to work with local, state, and federal officials to keep them in-formed of our monetary needs and the cost of unfunded mandates. Joe Frantz Sr.: 1. I have volunteered within the Perry community for over 27 years. I cannot think of a better way to continue serving the community then being part of a team that will work hard to keep the Perry School District one of the best in the State of Ohio. I believe my business experience and work ethic will provide the experience and leadership necessary for the school board now and into the future of our school district. 2. My opinion is one of concern. With less available funding, all school systems are forced to do more with less. For example, cuts in personnel and special programs increased the student-to-teacher classroom ratios. This reduces the ability for a teacher or aid to work one-on-one with students. There is no doubt this is impact-ing public education in the State of Ohio today. 3. Align my primary goal with that of Perry Local School’s mission statement - To emphasize excellence in learning and provide opportunities for every child to realize his/her potential in a safe environment. To encour-age students to become responsible, productive citizens and lifelong learners. Continue Perry Local School

PRESCHOOL SCREENING FOR SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN A screening for preschool children ages 3-5 who have suspected delays is scheduled for Thursday, November 3rd at T. C. Knapp Elementary. WHIPPLE ELEMENTARY (perrylocal.org/whipple) WALL OF HEROES The fourth grade students at Whipple Heights Ele-mentary School, created a “Wall of Heroes” to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of Septem-ber 11th. This project was all part of a literature unit that Mrs. Ousley’s reading students did to learn more about the heroes we have right here in our own community. The students brought in pictures of their family members, neighbors and friends who serve in various capacities in our community. These local heroes included firemen, police offi-cers, nurses, EMS workers, and military personnel. Each one then wrote on a star, information about their local hero. These stars now adorn the walls surrounding the various hero pictures that were

brought in. The fourth graders were very excited to work on this pro-ject and are ex-tremely

proud of the many heroes right here in our own Perry community. This project was a wonderful way to remember those we lost on 9/11 by celebrat-ing those who still choose to dedicate their lives to public service.

PERRY SCHOOLS KNAPP ELEMENTARY (perrylocal.org/knapp)

T.C.KNAPP HONORS HEROES To com-memorate the 10-year anniversary of Septem-ber 11th, the students and staff held a cere-mony around the flagpole at T.C.Knapp. The pur-pose of the ceremony was to honor the victims who lost their lives in the 9-11 at-tacks and to honor those who sacrificed their lives fighting for our freedom. The students, wearing red, white and blue, stood with American pride as they listened to the story of how 9-11 impacted the coun-try. They even had the honor of meeting hometown hero Lieutenant Seth Holland (a marine and former Knapp student) who was a guest speaker during the ceremony. Seth told the students, “I am not an American hero, your teachers are the heroes. Make sure you listen to them and work hard in school.” He also added, “You are lucky to live in America be-cause you have the opportunity to go to school every-day, not all children around the world have the same privileges as you.” Then the students had a moment of silence to remember all soldiers and victims of the attacks. The staff and students ended the ceremony by singing patriotic songs with their hands over their hearts to show respect and love of their country.

WATSON ELEMENTARY (perrylocal.org/watson) GREAT BEHAVIOR HAS ITS REWARDS Borrowing the theme of “Everything I needed to know in life I learned in kindergarten” Watson features the lessons and learning taking place in our kindergarten classrooms. All students at Watson are on the “wheel,” our school-wide behavior expectation system which of course starts in kindergarten where our stu-dents learn the 3 expectations of all persons at our school to “be safe,” “be re-spectful,” and “be responsible.” Mrs. Herncane’s class is featured in the picture with the wheel. See all those smiling faces? That’s because they are all on green for great! The students in Miss Walker’s kindergarten class are pictured show-ing off their socks. Although they are very nice socks, they are also the tool to help the stu-dents learn the let-ter “S.” They cele-brate their learning of 2-3 letters a week in special ways and the wearing of silly socks is just one of those celebrations. Travel down the hallway and around the corner and you will find the students in Mrs. Rochford’s kindergarten class learning about the letter “T.” They are celebrating “T” by bringing their Teddy Bear to school with them. It’s all about “T” as they take their teddy bear through a

day in their kinder-garten daily routine. “Teddy” gets to do centers, be read to, count, color, and even gets to partici-pate in the annual Teddy Bear Picnic based on a special

book that is read to the students. Teddy even learns about the wheel as he is expected to be safe, respectful and responsible. After all, Everything Teddy needs to know in life, he’ll learn in Kindergarten at Watson School.

LOHR ELEMENTARY (perrylocal.org/lohr) CRAZY HAT DAY Students in Mrs. Deuble's first grade class learned all about short a words throughout the week. Miss Bond (Mrs. Deuble's student teacher) helped the students make short a Andy Astronaught puppets and create their own short a word books. Students also played many short a games on the smart board. Thanks to the Lohr PTO the students now

have access to the engag-ing Brain-pop Jr. web-site and

they were able to watch a video on the smart board about short vowels. To celebrate learning short a words and our story for the week, The Hat, students got to wear crazy hats on Friday when they took their test. The students had a great time learning short a!

GENOA ELEMENTARY (perrylocal.org/genoa) WE ARE ALL SCIENTISTS

Kindergarten students in Mrs. Lovette’s class at Genoa Elementary have been exploring what it means to be a scientist. The first thing they learned is that scientists use their senses to con-duct experiments. So, what a better way to learn this than by actually getting their hands dirty? Milk rainbows were the topic of discussion during their first science experiment. Kinder-scientists made predictions, tested those predictions, and then wrote about what happened in their science note-books. Oohs, Aahs, and even a few excited squeals were abundant when they found out the results of their tests! What an exciting afternoon in Kindergar-ten!

PERRY PRIDE

REMEMBERING HEROES During the month of September, Genoa students are learning about American Heroes in their Library. Mrs. Woodson, Genoa Librarian, has coordinated a project to honor our Perry Graduate and local hero, Sgt. Dan Patron. Sgt. Dan Patron recently lost his life defend-

ing our country. To honor Sgt. Dan Patron, those serv-ing now, and those who served in the past, Mrs. Woodson and the chil-dren are

sending care boxes to Afghanistan. These boxes are filled with food, supplies, treats, and handmade cards from the students for Sgt. Dan Pa-tron’s Battalion. Mrs. Lorenz-Trunk, Genoa Art Teacher, is having the students create hand-painted flags to also be included in the care boxes. We thank Sgt. Dan Patron, our hero, for his service to our country!

While art students at Edison last year, they were both state finalists in the 2011 Ohio Schools Create a Cover Contest. Their award-winning art works were featured in the June 2011 issue of Ohio Schools Magazine.

READY, SET, FLY! The Gateway To Technology Engineering 8th grade class held a competition for the fastest "Air Skim-mer". The students were required to construct the air skimmer from ma-nila folders using exact measure-ments. They were then given glue, scissors, and a metal fastener. They used a rubber band taped to the floor to propel them down the hallway. Some of the skimmers traveled over fifty feet! The win-ners were Curtis Snyder, Gabriel Fragasse, and Samantha Stevenson. The students learned that quality work and precise measurements are vital to creating a quality manufactured and engineered product.

PERRY HIGH SCHOOL (perrylocal.org/phs) SAYING GOODBYE TO A PERRY HERO Son, husband, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, friend, sol-dier… All of these words can be used to describe United States Marine Corps Sgt. Daniel J. Patron, a 2003 Perry High School alum. Yet, none of these labels can fully do justice to this brave Perryite who gave the ultimate sacrifice on August 6, 2011, when he was killed defusing a roadside bomb in Afghanistan. Danny, an Explosive Ordinance Disposal specialist, com-pleted his eight year commitment with the Marine Corps in July, yet he chose to extend his service by an additional four months so he could stay with his fellow Marines and com-plete his third deployment. He left for Afghanistan in April and was due to return this November. It was here at Perry High School that Danny decided to join the Marines upon graduating in 2003. He was compelled to enlist after watching the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks un-fold on the television screens of his PHS classrooms. And it is here, just several hundred yards away from Perry High School, he has been laid to rest. As Danny’s flag-draped casket traveled to his final resting place, members of the Perry community lined the streets, holding signs and waving flags to pay their respects to the fallen hero. Anyone who ever met Danny knows he was devoted to his family, his community and his country. He was very proud of his Perry roots, and he was determined to protect the peo-ple he loved. Being a protector was just part of Danny’s nature. From the football stadium, where Patron performed with the PHS marching band, to the stage, where he starred in various theater productions, Danny’s talents are still the talk of Perry. His smile was infectious, and his quirkiness made him a stand out. Those who walked the halls of PHS with him immediately noticed his unique style. Although he en-joyed going against the norm, Danny’s nonjudgmental atti-tude made his peers feel at ease. Danny truly embodied eve-rything Perry stands for: Pride. Excellence. Tradition.

Patron has certainly left his mark on our school and on our hearts. His legacy lives on in the halls of Perry High School. Perry will never forget his service. Perry will never forget Danny.

The Patron Family wishes to thank the entire Perry commu-nity for their outpouring of support during this incredibly difficult time.

PERRY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION The Perry Alumni has been an active force in the district since 1993. We have an annual dance and various fund-raisers in the community for the scholarship program. Our group of alums has given away four $500.00 schol-arships each year with monies from our dance and dona-tions and annual dues. We meet at Pfeiffer Middle School on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM. We are always doing something new and interest-ing for all of the Panthers in the area. We are trying to focus on the younger alums and those people that have some new and fresh ideas. Recently we had a re organi-zation and elected new officers. At the present time you will see our Alumni banner at football games and of course any other function we attend. We have do-nated to various Perry causes but try to keep our focus on scholarships for Perry graduating seniors. We will be having a tailgate get together at Perry Stadium for the Austintown Fitch game on 10/14... and a possible meet-ing with all of our newer members at The Eagles on Monticello in the township. PERRY YOUTH BASKETBALL Registration forms have gone out to children in grades 2-6 interested in our youth basketball league. Thank you to all the administrators, athletic directors, and varsity coaches for their support, which has helped us move the season up to a more traditional time of year and get the children more time in the gym. The girls will start practice in late Octo-ber and the boys in No-vember. Please join us on Saturdays starting in No-vember for our youth games at various Perry school locations. We had 315 children participate last year and encourage new players to join in the fun. It's not too late to reg-ister. Our biggest need is always a steady stream of new coaches. If you are willing to volunteer, please contact John Wagner at 268-5080 or print out the coaching application from our website. Registration forms, coaching applica-tions, and answers to many questions can be found at: perryyouthbasketball.com.
