Page 9: Period 8 group 1

At first, King of Judah

Israel is now without a king, but has 2 rival leaders: David (in the north), and Saul’s general Abner (south)

Abner makes Saul’s eldest son Ishbaal, king over the northern tribes

Page 10: Period 8 group 1

David Reign Begins…

After much bloodshed, Abner and Ishbaal are dead

David mourns their death

David captures Jerusalem, a Canaanite walled city, and makes it his capital

Page 11: Period 8 group 1

Jerusalem as Ideal

David made Jerusalem his capital – it was ideally located in a territory between the northern and southern tribes.

Jerusalem would become a holy city for Jews, Christians, and Muslims in the future.

David brings the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem because it is a powerful symbol of God’s love.

Page 12: Period 8 group 1

David’s Devotion to God, Michal’s Fate

There is no love in David and his wife Michal’s marriage.

Michal shows contempt for David when he enters the city dancing with joy in front of the Ark of the Covenant .

The Davidic Covenant

The prophet Nathan tells David that God has a plan for him; God will build him a royal dynasty that will endure forever

David’s blood line endured for over 400 years before dropping into obscurity,

The Jewish people are still waiting for the Messiah - “anointed one”

Christians believe that Jesus was this Messiah.

Page 15: Period 8 group 1

David’s Flaws

David’s lesson and repentance: after being told a parable, David recognizes his sin and repents

He realizes he is still subject to God and must follow the law

First son becomes sickly and dies

Page 16: Period 8 group 1

Chosen but Sinful

Why did such an account of David’s weakness and sin find its way into the Bible?

Deuteronomists chose to make it clear that David is not above God’s law

He must repent and suffer for his sins God works through limited and sinful

persons
