Relative Humidity

Relative Humidity- is the Measure of the amount of water vapor in the air compared to the amount needed for saturation at a specific temperature

Air at 25*C is saturated when it contains 22g of water vapor per cubic meter of air

Dew Point

Dew point-The temperature at witch air is saturated and condensation forms

Air temperature and dew point temperature are two very different things.

The dew point temperature is the point at which the air must be cooled in order for the air mass to become saturated

Dew point(Continued)

Dew point is a better "absolute" measure of the air's moisture content. Here's a good example of why:

Temperature Dew point Relative Humidity 90 80 =67% 100 80 =47% 110 80 =33%

!!!!!Fog!!!!!

The dew point is also critical when it comes to forecasting fog

Fog is likely when the surface air temperature and dew point temperature are the same.

Page 6: Period 8 Group 1

Why does cooling the air to the dew point cause saturation?

The answer is…. the cooler the air, the less energy it has. It takes energy for

molecules to break free of the liquid bonds
