TECHNOLOGYDistributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is a sensing technology based on fibre optic cables designed for perimeter applica-tions. DAS has an extremely high resolution and can detect even the slightest vibrations.

The detection system basically consists of the sensor (i.e. the fibre optic cable) and a detection unit that analyses the signals and visualizes in a way suitable for the application.

As fibre optic cables contain no metals they are difficult to detect when buried under ground or in-corporated into e.g. a wall. Also is the technology immune to RF and EMI.

SECURITY SOLUTIONSIntrusion protection for perimeters of any extent (such as compounds, buildings, but even

airports, docs, industrial sites or even entire borders between countries) is a constantly evolving challenge. Traditional security solutions such as manned patrols, CCTV, IR or

microwave have their strengths but each also has limitations in terms of performance and cost.

DAS offers a new complementary layer to existing security systems and can detect, identify and locate noise and vibration patterns with one (1) metre

of suspect disturbances and potential threats such as unauthorized vehicles or people. Digging, climbing, cutting of a fence, no matter at

what weather conditions, day or night, can be identified instantly and reliably. By installing a inconspicuous cable virtually unlimited distances can be monitored with high resolution at minimal cost.

WHAT CAN BE DETECTED? 1. Opening of gates and doors2. Intruders passing a boundary3. Cutting, digging, grinding,

hammering, use of force4. Walking5. Vehicle movements

EXAMPLE APPLICATIONS1. Residences, commercial buildings2. Compounds3. Borders4. Parastatal and military areas5. Industrial areas, such as refineries6. Hazardous areas7. Fences, walls, roofs8. Infrastructure

PIPELINE MONITORINGWith DAS pipelines can be efficiently monitored and any distur-bances detected and located instantly. By constantly measuring with high resolution all parameters, pipeline operators can react instantly and - in case of sabotage - even initiate counter-meas-ures virtually in real-time. The system is capable of monitoring1. Flow speed2. Temperature3. Pressure4. Noise/vibration resulting from manipulation or damages5. Exact location of any of the above

In combination with the perimeter security solution this is the ultimate monitoring solution for any kind of pipeline and it is quickly deployed and highly cost-efficient.

ROAD MONITORINGRoads are expensive and complex infrastructures with design limitations. In order to maintain a road properly it is essential not to exceed its limits. Our road monitoring technology is capable of analysing es-sential parameters of roads including load and also speeds for traffic enforcement:1. Total weight of a vehicle2. Tyre footprints (e.g. to detect flat tyres)3. Unbalanced loads4. Maintenance forecast

DISTRIBUTED ACOUSTIC SENSING

BRIDGES AND INFRASTRUCTURE

ADVANTAGES OVER CONVENTIONAL SYSTEMS1. Long service life and low life-cycle cost2. Durability up to 20 years3. Installation below top surface layer4. Less failure means higher availability5. High data resolution, accuracy and reliability6. Virtually maintenance-free

7. Reduced distortions8. Flexible installation distances (even more

than 50 km uninterrupted with one sensor)9. Cost-effective and can be deployed easily

during road construction or maintenance.10. Remote monitoring

ADVANTAGES OVER CONVENTIONAL SYSTEMS1. Early warning of approaching failures2. Prevention of catastrophic failures3. Maintenance planning4. Managing remote sites

5. Use of existing fibre-optic networks6. Real-time information7. Can be combined with other layers, e.g.

traffic monitoring to count axles or moni-tor total load on a bridge etc.

KEY ADVANTAGES1. Simple installation and virtually

maintenance free2. Industry leading sensitivity3. Accurate location of events down to 1 metre4. Instantaneous detection of acoustic and

vibration events5. Characterisation of detected events6. GPS integration with full mapping capability

7. Integrates with existing systems, adds addi-tional layer

8. Intrinsically safe even in explosive environ-ments

9. Immune to RF and EMI10. Remotely configurable11. Extremely robust12. Cost effective

Large infrastructures are long-term investments. To secure them they require a maintenance strat-egy over the entire life-cycle. DAS monitoring technology provides several efficient and accurate analysis techniques:1. Static load2. Dynamic load3. Monitor strains and bending4. Crack monitoring
