Head Teacher Newsletter
We are very proud of the
learning that is going on in
Tenby and the children
have lots of opportunities
for hands on learning.
Year 5 are learning all
about bones and Year 3 all
about our digestive system
using tights and crackers!
Please can I remind parents that they must not simply turn up to school unannounced. The teachers are busy
working with your children and must not be interrupted, as disruptions have a direct impact on learning. If
you need to come into school then an appointment must be made with Ms. Chong and items can be left
with her to be sent to classes. Thank you for your continued support.
Please talk to your child about the importance
of our world and the plastic crisis that we are
currently in the middle of. This will be a topic
for the Eco warriors to address so we can do
our bit here at Tenby SEP.
Student Council:
The prefects will be looking at all of the entries
—we have had over 150!!
Well done to all of the entries, we will be reading
each and every entry looking for the children
who can represent all of the children in a
positive and fair way.
Duke of Edinburgh First Aid Training
YOU, might just be someone’s Life Saver
If you see someone clutching their throat, coughing, gagging, wheezing or passed out, would you know
what to do? If you were trekking and a threatened snake bit your arm, your phone has no service, would
you know what to do? What about your younger siblings, they’ve accidentally burned themselves due to
the boiling hot water, would you know what to do? It’s during situation like these, First Aid & CPR comes
into part and I, Megan Choong Jieh Yue from Year 12T will explain to you how we (Year 10 & 12) were
able to learn such indispensable skill and just how vital it is during a life or death situation.
Duke of Edinburgh, the world’s leading Youth
Achievement, also known as DOE. It was
founded by Prince Philip and has since
expanded to 144 nations including Malaysia.
DOE was first brought into our school, Tenby
International School by Mr Gareth Gorst and is
available to children of Year 10 for the Bronze
Award and the 6th Formers (Year 12 & 13) for
the Silver or Gold Award. It is a very prestigious
award as many would say and has helped many
children to acquire new skill and receive credits
for the skills and abilities they’ve already
acquire currently.
The DOE Award, consist of four section for Bronze & Silver:
● Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community.
● Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities.
● Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests.
● Expedition: planning, training for, and completion of an adventurous journey
On Saturday 30.09.2017, it was our 1st skill developing course: Basic First Aid & CPR Course. As part of
the preparation for our Expedition section for the Adventurous Journey, conducted at Tenby International
School from 8:00am to 5:30pm. The one day course has provided many insights to emergency situations
and how to treat it effectively, such as but not limited to:
- Respiratory System
- Circulatory System
- Wounds & Bleeding
- Different types of Bandages & its function
- Burns & Scalds
- Fractures, Dislocations & Injuries
- Choking: Adults & Babies
- Snake Bites & Poisoning
- Shock, Collapsing & Fainting
- Differences between Conscious, Semi Conscious & Unconscious
- Asphyxia
- CPR: Adults, Children & Babies
Duke of Edinburgh First Aid Training
The major section that I would love to highlight in the
newsletter is Choking: Adults & Babies. The most
memorable and significant section was definitely this as we
all were given a dummy to perform the act on while the
respective teacher was on standby to correct us and give
us further instructions, allowing us to improve further and
perform the act accurately.
According to Injury Facts 2017, choking is the fourth
leading cause of unintentional injury death and many could
have prevented it with this one day First Aid Course
through the Heimlich Maneuver with four simple steps.
● Stand behind the victim with one leg forward between the
victim's legs. (For a child, move down to their level)
● Reach around the abdomen and locate the navel
● Place the thumb side of your fist against the abdomen just
above the navel
● Grasp your fist with your other hand and thrust inward and
upward into the victim's abdomen with quick jerks until the
victim expels the object
(Do not perform this unless you have received the First Aid Course or is certified)
Everyone had the opportunity to perform it until you finally succeed removing the substance in the victim’s
mouth and let me explain to you just how important these four steps can help to a choking victim.
Based on EMedical Health, when someone is choking with a completely blocked airway, no oxygen can
enter the lungs. The brain is extremely sensitive to this lack of oxygen and begins to die within four to six
minutes. It is during this time that first aid must take place. Irreversible brain death occurs in as little as ten
minutes, with traffic congestion and many victims in Malaysia alone, it’s tough for an ambulance to reach
the victim on time.
From this, you can already see just how valuable it is in terms of preventing an unintentional injury and
through this course it has given me solutions to twelve different emergency situations that I could use
during a life and death situation. You, might just be the one to save someone next.
Hence to reinforce my first statement, I’d highly recommend this course if you had the opportunity to join
one. Accidents are inevitable, that, is a fact. However, you can choose not to be a helpless bystander
which does nothing but worsen the case. You can step up and assist those who are injured in the event of
an accident or emergency situation until help arrives with just some basic knowledge of First Aid & CPR.
Be someone’s hero: join the First Aid & CPR course and learn how to be cool, calm and collected while
saving lives during an emergency.

Sekolah Sri Tenby Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship
On Wednesday 28.07.2017 to Saturday 05.08.2017, Kai Xuan (F4M), Horng Jiung (F3S) and Michael Thong (F4S) were chosen to represent Malaysia in the 2017 Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship. The trip was not only to
compete in the world championship, bearing the title of Malaysia’s representatives on our back, but it was also for us to indulge in the different culture and atmosphere that we won’t be able to find in any part of Asia. We met the friendliest bunch of people that shared the same passion with us. During our first day at the venue, Horng Jiung and Lyn Yi (another
representative of Malaysia from Wesley Methodist School) were comfortably talking to the representatives of China, while Kai Xuan and Michael Thong were invited to have a foosball match with the representatives of Italy. The best highlights of the whole trip, was getting to mingle around with the participants from 40 over different countries around the world. Being able to represent Malaysia is a milestone for us. This trip has been an amazing experience for all of us, and we say that with the utmost sincerity. If given the chance, I’m sure all of us would go again in a heartbeat.

Message from Head of schools
As the school year nears its close, we wish each of our students all the best on the
upcoming exams. Be confident in your knowledge, fearless in your approach, and
proud of what you have achieved these past months. As the great footballer Pele
has said: “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning,
studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.”
Wise words, indeed. For as you are often reminded, exams are only a part of the
journey that you are on. As students of life and of the world, you are building the
critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are deeply needed in an
increasingly global society. Learning never ends, and your ability to influence the
future through your ideas, your leadership, and your passion for knowledge is
limited only by the breadth of your dreams. Good luck in your exams!

Talent Show by SST Primary
SST Primary assembly was all about music this week. It was a special treat to watch our students displaying their talents, be it playing an instrument or singing a duet. We emphasise learning music as it facilitates learning other subjects and enhances skills that children inevitably use in other areas. These are students who spend their break time practising for various performances. It is a pleasant surprise when more talented students start budding. The sequences of the performances are: 1) Hall of Fame (vocals) by Trisha & Andrea, S5S 2) How far I'll go (ukulele) by Xavier Yeoh, S2S 3) Try everything (ukulele) by Lim Zi Suen, S2S 4) Flashlight (vocals) by Kaylee & Ann Gie, S5S 5) Do Re Mi (Group ensemble) by all students from S4S 6) Fight Song (Group ensemble) by all students from S5M
