What’s Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD)?
A way of organizing sport to encourage steady development and long term success. Stages of Development: Distinct stages designed to create a positive sport experience and support skill development. Competition Guidelines: Recommendations for youth racing that encourage skill development and retention.
Know Your Sailor’s Stage
In this presentation we are targeting the “Stage 3” sailor: They are ready for focused training and want to challenge themselves in competition.
Training-to-Competition Ratios
A common LTAD recommendation for youth competitors is: 60-70% of participation time spent on training* 30-40% of participation time spent on competition* *recommended ratios vary for each stage of development. Source: (Balyi, Higgs and Way; Long-Term Athlete Development)
Willie: Using the Hours Tracker How does this tool help?
• A shareable plan • A detailed plan • A confidence builder • A reality check

AYC C420 Race Team Regatta Schedule
June AYC C420 Schedule 8 practice days (2.5 hours on water) = 20 practice hours 3 regatta days (3.5 hours on water) = 10.5 regatta hours 66% Practice 34% Racing
July AYC C420 Schedule
8 practice days (2.5 hours on water) = 20 practice hours 12 regatta days (3.5 hours on water) = 42 regatta hours 32% Practice 68% Racing
Strategies for Shifting July P/C Ratio -Reduce number of regattas. Less is more (a popular strategy with college coaches). “Addition by subtraction” -Facilitate sailors getting hours outside of formal practice. Teach drills for solo or pair practices. Encourage “free sailing”. -Treat certain regattas as training regattas. Teach and reinforce a process mindset. -Load up on practice hours in the pre and post season. Encourage both structured and unstructured hours on the water in the shoulder seasons.
Sailor Management & Logistics
Simplifying Sailor Management 1.Identify problem issues 2.Iterative Process 3.Keep solutions simple,
accessible
WCSC Example: Check-in/pairings
• Identify: late, absences, multiple coaches, schools
• Iterative: Whiteboard • Solution: Magnets
WCSC Example: Regatta Sign-up/Handbook
• Identify: lost, lacking info, parent/student reference
• Iterative: paper handbook & onsite sign-up
• Solution: web & live

Regatta Logistics What regattas to attend?
• Local vs Regional vs National vs International – Local Annual Regatta, State Championship, Orange
Bowl, CORK • Do the regattas line up with your program goals and
sailors goals? • Regatta season(s) Florida vs New England regatta
schedules
Which Regattas? Try the Climbing Fun Scale • Type I - Fun while it's happening • Type II - Fun in retrospect • Type III - Only fun as a story
• Break it up:
– Type I, because it keeps you in love (70% total time) – Type II, because it builds skills (25% total time) – Type III, because it challenges you (5% total time)
• Type for event varies by sailor and ability • Be wary of change (boat breaks, frost nip, etc. is our type changing?) • Planning and recording
Regatta Budgets Program fee vs Coaching fee Program Fee - the cost of coaching at the regatta is included in your overall program fee Coaching Fee - the cost of coaching is additional to a program fee or per regatta basis Things to include in your budget:
• Housing costs • Food cost (GSA per diem rates) • Mileage to and from regatta • Daily mileage (25 per day) • Plane tickets and baggage fees • Coach boat gas per day • Charter coach boat fee per day • Storage between regattas
Tips to keep in mind: ● Use your networks! ● Coach boats, housing, team
dinners ● AirBnb, house sharing ● Local coaches to hire ● Carpool with other teams
Race Team Assets Who transports the team assets? ● Parent volunteers, coaches, driver for hire? ● Multiple boat trailers vs single trailers
○ Opti vs Laser vs c420 vs high performance boats ● Company owned trucks vs private vehicles
○ Company vehicles - USDOT regulations, do they apply to my program? Storage of assets between regattas: ● Yacht Clubs, commercial lots, or personal storage
Remember! Trailer locks, spare keys,
copies of trailer registrations

Teach Process Through Tech
The Magic Cookie
Sailing can be a “mystical” sport
Factors that we can’t see:
“Feel”
Wind (shifts, speed, etc.)
Water (current, flow, etc.)
The danger is that results become the source of clarity
Process Rules
Why do parents spend so much money on their children's sailing programs?
How do sailors learn?
Kevin Hall wrote an article called “Offensive”
Iterating the learning cycle is the focus of successful Olympic level training
We can’t learn quickly if we focus on results
The Pursuit of Mastery
How many of you have ever told a sailor to, “Go focus on getting a good start”?
Skill mastery is the key to rapid improvement
Fundamental question of technology is:
How can technology help speed the learning process by highlighting mastery?
Part 1: Evaluating Techniques
Quality Over Quantity
Other coaches often ask me about the latest and greatest technology
More important than what gadgets you have are how you use them
90% of technology assisted learning can be done with a camera
Cameras
Prefered features:
Pistol grip (best for stability)
Optical zoom
Stabilization
Wifi capability
Live streaming
Favorite camera: Panasonic HA02
Different cameras for different applications
iPhone on Gyro Olympus Camera
GoPro Benchmark
Utilizing Video
Rules of Thumb:
Focus on GOOD videos
Film in 15 second clips
Focus on filming a single maneuver at a time from many angles
Always film at 60fps (video looks good at 24fps)
Benchmarking Progress
“Talented” sailors have “mystical abilities”...
Objectify techniques to dispel mysticism.
Benchmark videos archive a moment in time.
Provide basis for self evaluation and repeatable teaching process.
Eval templates work hand in hand with benchmarks.
Avoid The Distractions
Tech can help sailors learn faster by prioritizing mastery over results
Can also distract from the important focus
Rules of thumb for good coaching tech:
Tech should not interfere with other instruction
Tech should make workflow easier not harder
Coach should take responsibility for understanding and utilizing technology
InstaGame Open source discussion
Instagram - my favorite platform because (old) instagram limits video at 15 seconds. Can you communicate your point in 15 seconds?
Communicate mechanics in 15 seconds
Communicate a drill in 15 seconds
Communicate a skill drill in 15 seconds
Communicate a technique in 15 seconds
Communicate a playbook play in 15 seconds

Part 2: Evaluating Understanding
Institutional Knowledge and Digital Curriculum Creating a knowledge database for future program directors, coaches, etc. to draw from is critical! Apparent wind quiz: www.mcbrideracing.com/NSPS Advanced land drills
Helmets
Understand communication dynamics
Too much noise is distracting
Takes practice to use effectively
Listen For:
Who talks about what?
How self referenced is communication?
Instamic benchmarks
