Editorial

Today is Utsav’s Sweet Sixteenth Birthday! Fifteen years have passed by in a wink of an eye, I want to take a moment to thank you all for your hard work and contributions over the years. Let us keep the momentum going. Utsav has grown in every dimension because of your incredible dedication. Our 16th Durga Pujo this year is a special festival to honor our culture, traditions, and rituals. Enjoy the pujo days with your family and friends. Pujo, Cultural, Food, and Fundraising Committees are working hand in hand, so please appreciate their effort in putting up a wonderful show. There were no shortage of challenges, but passion and focus really made the difference. It’s your pujo so offer your hands as well wherever you can.

As Chowrongee continues its journey, it has made significant progress and paved a stronger path. Please flip through the colorful pages, enjoy reading the articles and artworks of the little ones; poems, travelogues across the globe, childhood reminiscent, Swami Prapannananda’s write-up “Sri Sri Chandi” and a variety of different experiences. We have a rainbow of community news this year, take time to congratulate the successes/accomplishments. We have lost our dear Amit-da, but his memories will be always cherished in our hearts. On the other hand, we welcome new members including some baby angels born recently. Thanks to our patrons, we couldn’t have published Chowrongee without your support. Kamalesh Sen Gupta from Kolkata deserves special mention here; his untiring effort in typing the Bengali pieces for years is praiseworthy. Kudos to Santana Das too, as she has been patiently handling our requests past many years to turn the front cover pages into unique creations.

My sincere gratitude goes to the Literary Committee members; we could overcome many pressing challenges just because of you all, and looking forward to work with you again next year.

Stay safe during this pujo season, provide your support to people who need it, especially in the natural-disaster affected regions during this demanding time. All fingers are not of the same length but when they are bent they all stand equal and lives become easy, so please show your encouragement. Thank you and Pujo Greetings to you all.

Message from the Utsav Boardroom

Dear Utsav Families and Friends, Namaskar! Ab-initio, ‘Sweet Sixteen’ to

our own Utsav! We are closing in on the most eventful part of the year that we all look forward to. Our sixteenth Durga Puja is here, and preparations for this event have been going on in full swing for the past several months.

A quick recapitulation of our activities

over the past year is in order. We observed Saraswati Puja on February 4, 2017 at the Grange Hall in Orangevale. The Puja was performed by Swami Prapannananda Maharaj of Vedanta Society, and excellent entertainment was provided by our local artists. Utsav celebrated Holi on March 18, 2017 at Spoto Creek Park of Rancho Cordova. This colorful and fun-filled event coupled with mouthwatering food (cooked on-the-spot by Utsav’s young members from UC Davis) attracted many non-member participants as well. Our Annual Picnic-cum-AGM, held on July 30, 2017 at the Folsom Lake, was also an enjoyable event with fun, water activities, and food. Utsav Team performed the Bengali Drama “Occupy Wal-Mart” on July 9, 2017 at the North American Bengali Conference (NABC) in Santa Clara, CA. Many other Utsav members also put together fantastic performances in the NABC 2017. Utsav also

presented a patriotic song and a dance in the India Day Celebration in August to celebrate the auspicious occasion of India’s Independence Day. And now we are eagerly awaiting Ma Durga’s arrival for Utsav’s 16th Durga Puja. Our local talents – natok team, kids and adults – are working hard to dazzle us with their performances. We are also looking forward to the performance of Kinjal Chattopadhyay, the famous Bengali singer from Kolkata.

It would be very remiss if we did not

offer our sincere thanks to those volunteers whose tireless work year round has made all these events possible. A very special thank goes out to all donors/sponsors. Without your support, we would not have been able to pull this off. Thank you once more, and on behalf of the GBM, I wish you a healthy, prosperous and peaceful Durga Puja and “Subho Bijoya”.

Congratulations to Pradeep Devavarapu for finishing two IRONMAN 70.3 triathalon events - one in January 2017 in Dubai, and another in May 2017 in Vineman Santarosa, CA. Crossing an IRONMAN finish line is something very few athletes can claim, especially when faced with unexpected challenges before and during race day. IRONMAN is about persevering, enduring, and being a part of something larger than yourself. It shows that when we push beyond our boundaries and go the distance, anything is possible. Ronit Mukherjee, grandson of Mrs. Manjusri Mukherjee, son of Suvra and Joy Mukherjee, and brother of Rinita Mukherjee, had the sacred thread ceremony on August 12, 2017. This event was attended not only by friends but also family who came from Albany, New York and Mumbai, India.

Sharon Sarkar, daughter of Lily and Subir Sarkar, graduated from Vista del Lago High School on May 26, 2017. She is going to American River College/Folsom Lake College for 2 years and then transferring out. Right now, she is working on majoring in Kinesiology and using that to pursue something in the Sports Medicine field.

Two Poems Tapati Ray

Cancer

When the maggots of cancer declared their triumph over your body I cried out in despair, my beating heart in agony. A sharp cold knife cut the cord of life. You wiped my angry tears and said “Do not grieve for me, live life as it is meant to be. Death does not belong in the realm of life my beloved I shall be in paradise. So bid me farewell with love, not sorrow for the sun will shine again, for you tomorrow.” The long dark shadows of solitude brought a victorious attitude. The sweet memories of love and happiness vanquished the despair of loneliness. Life goes on, nothing is lost. The seed of life has been sown.

The Wanderer I am a wanderer, I know somewhere

my lover awaits. At dusk when the desert night gets cold

the cool breeze makes waves over the glittering sand

I feast my eyes on them I dream of your mystic sweetness

drenched in myrrh…….. The oasis invites me with promises

to soothe the burning skin. I can hardly resist the temptation.

The mirage brings glimpses of your face hidden by a black lacy veil……… The desert wind bears your aroma I shall not rest as I wander from desert dunes and the shores till my tired body and yearning heart can take no more ……

Dr. Tapati Ray is a retired Anesthesiologist and lives in Newcastle, California.

The Saint Violinist Sangita Biswas

She is like a dew drop on a rose petal,

Frail and delicate, yet sparkling like a crystal. Time is stealing the memories of her yesterdays,

She says, I have hidden my melodies –rest, you can snatch away. Cruel time challenges her every single day,

But victory is hers, she has her music at the end of the day. Some days we get lucky, as she picks up her violin gently,

A touch of the Maestro's hand, and it is alive instantly. She lets the bow speak her heart, without a music sheet,

The divine ragas, tans fill the house with every single beat. We sit close at her feet, drenched in the music that rains upon us,

But closer than all, the Gods listen and bless all of us. A neuroscientist wonders—how are the melodies hidden in the sulci and gyri,

I bet I cannot see a single note or any hymn, if I look at the brain MRI. A music so divine, so strong, it can heal, like a lover, I wanted to heal her, but instead I am healed forever.

Dr. Sangita Biswas is a Senior Scientist in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine of UC Davis.

She lives in Folsom, CA.

What They Did Not Tell You In Medical School Barnali Roy Choudhury

Long Long ago

A wide eyed little girl Looked at the starry night

With dreams that would unfurl

She had broken her collarbone During a bike ride

But the kind nurse and doctor Fixed her pain and pride

Over the years

She was fascinated by the human body She thought she could help all The sick, fallen and the needy

She worked very hard Toiling day and night

She was rewarded by entry in Medical School

Where gathered the scholarly and bright

Years of labor ensued Sleepless anxious nights

Cutting dead bodies, young alive minds Fighting for patient's rights

Graduation day made

The whole family proud She was an MD now

Ready to serve the crowd

Work was challenge There were good and bad vibes

Those pangs of uncertainty The exalted feeling of saving lives

But the heady days led to

The reality of the medical field The demand on health and time The expectations of the guild

Patients are not products

Doctors are not robots repeating

Two human beings interacting Two hearts beating

Alas! no one had warned

About the world of BCBS and Aetna About Medicine being a hostage to

United and Humana

Knowledge about care and cure Ended up being secondary Coding, Billing, invoicing

Mantra of the “Doctor Primary”

Confused, overwhelmed tired She trudged along this road

Every day became a challenge Of keeping up with this load

She thought there was some help For the deserving poor and old

Medicare and Medicaid Surely these were the standards of gold?

Little did she know

The nature of the human mind Ready to extract the last drop

Either in cash or kind

Demands came for Notification of disability

Certifying at length About all kinds of eligibility

Between all these demands and pressures

Insurance and patients and whatever they try The noble practice of Medicine

Became a far cry

There was no escape From the drudgery of a system faulty

Medicine was not about Making a sick one well and healthy

Human greed, paperwork and the likes that dictate

The tired doctor thought, all this hard work Was it all a mistake?

Slowly she thought of the

Little old lady, who baked her a cake With all her heartfelt thanks

Manifested in her sweet make

The old World War 2 veteran who Appreciated her dedication Who always made her smile

With an anecdote, he performed in service of this nation

Somewhere Somewhere

There is still alive The human touch in doctor patient

interaction The doctor's zeal and drive

Slowly she went back to her

Familiar domain Pharmacist, PT, OT, Social worker, Lab tech

and above all her patients for CERTAIN

A Memorable trip to BIG ISLAND (HAWAII) Sid Dey

Last year, we went to the Big Island of Hawaii. That was really a memorable trip. We chose the Big Island because I always wanted to see an erupting volcano. The Big Island is the largest island in Hawaii.

We took the Hawaiian airlines to Oahu from Sacramento and then we took another plane to the Big Island. We stayed there in Courtyard by Marriott. We reached there in the afternoon. In the evening, we walked around the beach. We enjoyed the beautiful blue sea and the amazing sunset.

On the second day, we took a submarine tour. We saw lots and lots of fish, a shipwreck, and sand clouds. I was really excited when the submarine touched 100ft down the sea. It was a beautiful experience. At night, we attended a Luau Party.

On the third day, we went to the Hapuna White Sand Beach. My brother and I played in the sand. The waves were really big. After that, we went to see the Pololu Valley Lookout, but on our way there, we passed the King Kamehameha I Statue, so we stopped there. The king conquered most of the Hawaiian Islands. He was a great warrior. Then we went to the Pololu Valley Lookout. I really liked the lookout. It is magnificent.

On Day 4, I was really excited because that day we went to see the volcano. When we reached there we saw that the whole area is covered with smoke, and the smell of sulphur was everywhere. I was a bit scared at that time. Then the big moment came, we saw the breath-taking and amazing lava glow of Kilauea volcano. Kilauea is one of the five volcanoes that form Hawaiian Islands. It started erupting on January 3, 1983, and it is still erupting. There was a hiking of 4 miles stretch around that volcano. I always wanted to do that but they

don’t allow kids under 7yrs because of the high amount of sulphur in the air. As my brother is little, we did not do the hiking.

Kilauea Volcano.

Day 5 was also very exciting because we went to the Punaluu Beach. It is a black sand beach. The black sand is very rare. My brother and I played in the black sand. We saw turtles build their nests on the black sand. Then we went to see the Akaka Rainbow Falls. It was a sunny day. The Rainbow Falls are so fun. We hiked over 0.4 miles to see the Akaka Rainbow Falls. It is a 442 ft high stream. It is the most famous falls in the Big Island. There is also a Green Sand Beach in the Big Island, but we didn’t go there.

The turtles at the black sand beach.

On Day 6, I was not excited at all because we needed to come back to home. My dad said we can go there again when me and my brother will be big enough to do the hiking around the volcano. I am waiting for that day. I want to go back to BIG ISLAND once again.

My First Solar Eclipse Sid Dey

This year, on August 21, 2017, a memorable thing happened. I saw my very first solar eclipse, but it was a partial type.

There are three types of a solar eclipse. The first type is partial. If you’re standing in the penumbral zone, you’ll see a partial solar eclipse. A partial solar eclipse is when the Moon only blocks part of the Sun, making it look like a crescent. The next type is annular. It happens when the Moon appears too small to fully cover the Sun. Finally, the last one is total! When you are standing in the umbral zone, you’ll see a total solar eclipse. It’s when the Moon blocks all of the Sun.

I enjoyed the partial solar eclipse and it was fun. I looked through the eclipse glasses, and the solar filter showed a crescent. I really liked it. It wasn’t scary. Only thing my doctor said that I should not

watch the eclipse without glasses. My school provided the glasses for me but I went to Powerhouse Museum to make the glasses for my parents because I wanted them to come to my school and I wanted to watch it together. We made solar glasses over there.

On August 21, at 10:15 am, we came outside of the class. Our teacher gave me eclipse glass, and when I saw the Sun through the glass, it looked like a crescent. My mom and dad were already there. I watched it with my parents and friends. It was so much fun.

I want to see a total solar eclipse next on April 8, 2024. It can be viewed from Texas. I want to go to Texas to see the total solar eclipse.

A Humanitarian Crisis: A story of a teenager Michael from Honduras trying to escape violence to find a

home Barin Kumar

Michael is one of the thousands of unaccompanied children trying to cross the southern border of the United States. In 2014, more than 57,000 such children from Central American countries such as El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras crossed solo America’s southern border to escape turmoil of war of narcotic-trafficking in their country. Michael’s story is heartbreaking but not unique. This border situation has become, in the words of President Barack Obama, ‘a humanitarian crisis’. I also felt that this description of the border situation is quite appropriate, so I name this article the same way.

In August 2014, Michael, a 13-year old from San Pedro Sula, Honduras, left alone for New Orleans, USA. San Pedro Sula is one of the most violent cities of the world where white children are easy target for recruitment by gangs for thugs and murder to control the drug trafficking and collection of war tax. Visit to a relative or family at nightfall in threatening neighborhood of the city requires the use of sign ritual such as blast of flash light to avoid the risk of getting shot by the confused rival.

Michael’s parents, Ivan and Maria, escaped this threatening environment of San Pedro Sula almost a decade ago with the sister of an uncle while looking for a better economic opportunity. Michael and his sister Yerlin left when they were shot at the house of their uncle in summer 2014. They took separate route to the United States in a box of a truck. After several long exhausting weeks avoiding military checkpoints of Guatemala, tackling marshland in Mexico, and surviving a spectacular trip for 5 days in

a bus, they reached the American border. They swam across the Rio Grande River and climbed to the bank where they met other unaccompanied children and a mother who guided those kids. Together they had a difficult walk through the desert till they ran into a US Border Patrol agent who took them to a central detention center.

At the detention center, Michael was called for interview after waiting for an hour. He started speaking about his misfortune through an interpreter. He said that I am here because my uncle was threatened by the gangs. Michael told his heart-breaking story and no one could hold the tears.

From there, Michael and Yerlin, whose last names are omitted because they were minors without papers, were sent to a shelter in El Paso, Texas, for unaccompanied immigrant children. There Michael contacted official, Jolene Elberg, of the Congress of Day Laborers. Jolene helps families as a part of her work for the Worker Center of Racial Justice of New Orleans. Michael’s mother, Maria, an undocumented immigrant, could not accompany him to travel by air to New Orleans for the operation for fear of being arrested and deported. Michael and Yerlin finally flew to New Orleans for the operation.

Though the emphasis mostly is on children, the truth is that these problems affect the entire family. And what the family wants is to stay united. Like most children, Michael and Yerlin are affectionate with their parents. Maria, the mother of Michael and Yerlin said that the family like her is not a burden for her adoptive country. The

families of undocumented workers receive social services from charities like Catholic churches, pay their own medical bills, pay income tax and do not receive any benefits with the exception of public education. The family does not ask for anything from the government, would like to stay in the US, and return is not a desirable option.

In the first half of 2014, unaccompanied children have been resettled in all 50 states, mostly in Texas, California, and Florida by the Office of Resettlement of Refugees, and the Department of Health and Human Services. They were often harassed from all sides for thousand of miles in border towns. Some children will disappear but majority of them would be participants of temporary adoption in towns where they are going to school, play sports, and sail through the legal system looking for a home.

Michael’s parents, Ivan and Maria, arrived in New Orleans after the devastation of hurricane Katrina. After Katrina, they were welcome to help with reconstruction of the city. Ivan found a job as a mechanic and Maria got work in cleaning houses. At that time, unaccompanied children began to arrive in large numbers. As per the estimate from local authority, the area already had more than 50,000 undocumented immigrants. More than 1,000 immigrant children arrived in Louisiana that year. Michael and his sister were among them. The wave of unaccompanied children who recently arrived and are ready to register in school has created a huge burden on the school system along with new anxieties.

Michael and his sister have now embarked on a routine similar to any

American person. They live with their parents in a small house in suburbs of New Orleans. After arriving in October, they enrolled in the public school of Jefferson where they were segregated in classes with other children of Central America to receive instructions in Spanish. Michael’s favorite subject is Mathematics while Yerlin prefers literature. ‘I feel free,’ said Michael in a community meeting with his family where hundreds of local undocumented Hispanics attended. ‘Here I can go to the park, play ball in the street, and ride a bicycle. All that I could not do in Honduras.’

But the joy of the family soon splintered into thousand pieces. A few weeks after meeting with their children for the first time in eight years, Ivan was arrested for traffic violation. He did not stop at a traffic stop sign. Although he has no criminal record, his prior deportation order was sufficient so that they could be sent to Honduras. Their deportation to San Pedro Sula was due in November. For Michael and Yerlin, the Odyssey started in August 2014 with some hope which ended soon in deportation a few weeks later.

Reference: This piece is translated from the Spanish article ‘La Odisea de Michael’ in the November 2014 issue of the ‘Ser Padres’ magazine.

Special note: ‘Odisea’ is the Spanish word for Odyssey. Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic, attributed to Homer, author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, describing the wanderings of Odysueus during the 10 years after the fall of Troy.

The First Super Bowl Srijon Datta

Ever wonder how one of the most famous American sporting events—football—began? Well, I am going to tell you how the First World Championship, now known as the Super Bowl, started. It began when two rival football companies, AFL and NFL, fought to win the name as the best. So, the AFL and NFL leagues had a football game to see who would be the best. Before the AFL came, NFL killed all the other football leagues, but the AFL was an enemy like no other. Their war began when the NFL wanted some of their players. The AFL saw this as an offense, and so they decided to steal some of the NFL’s players. And this is why the Super Bowl is famous. The first Super Bowl has a lot of milestones. One is that it is the only Super Bowl to be filmed by two TV companies, NBC and CBS, because for the TV companies, this was the time to make ‘maaaddd’ money.

LA Memorial Colliseum.

Have you ever watched the Super Bowl on TV and seen that there are so many people filling the seats at the stadium? Well, let me just tell you that, for the record, the game was not a very packed area because it did not oversell. The officials were expecting more than 94,000. In reality, the game had about 32,000 people. This game was the only game that did not oversell. The stadium chosen for the game was the

Memorial Coliseum in LA (picture of stadium shown above), so both teams were guest teams. The game day chosen was January 15, 1967, just over 51 years ago. The tickets cost was $12, which was pretty cheap by today’s standards. It was so cheap, that it was the second cheapest thing then, with movie tickets being $1.20.

Green Bay Packers Ring (awarded to each Packers’

player). Do you want to know how the game

went? Well, at the start, the Chiefs held up really well, but by halftime, the Packers were leading the Chiefs 14-10. At first, the Packers coach, Vince Lombardi, was worried that the Packers would lose. To him, being 4 points ahead was nothing too good. Then, things changed. Their quarterback, Bart Starr helped them win, with help from some of the other teammates. Meanwhile, during halftime, the Chiefs coach, Hank Stram, was worried too. He thought they could beat the Packers. But Elijah Pitts made a touchdown. The score was now Packers 21-10 over Chiefs. Vince, the Packers coach, was relieved. He was very happy with Pitts. The Packers kept making really good passes. If you are a Packers fan, thank Bart Starr for making those amazing passes. The final score was 35 Packers-10 Chiefs.

Now you have seen what used to be called the First World Championship: AFL vs NFL became what is now called the Super bowl. The winners get the Vince Lombardi trophy and Super Bowl rings. And the MVP even gets a ring and a MVP trophy. The Vince Lombardi trophy is awarded to the whole team, not to a specific person of the team.

Now those were just some fun facts about the first Super Bowl. I am totally filled these kinds of facts. So, let me tell you some. For number 1, in the third Super Bowl, the officials used Roman numerals and started to call this game the Super Bowl. For number 2, the most watched show on TV was M*A*S*H finale, with 106 million viewers on February, 1983. But the Super Bowl got close to that record with 102 million views. A lot of people used to think that football was a man’s sport. But 46.8% of the viewers were women. This just is more proof that men and women are similar.

Have you seen a halftime show on TV for the Super Bowl? If so, you know that there are singers and bands. In the first Super Bowl, the bands were both from the Universities of Arizona and Michigan. Now they have super popular singers like Katy Perry, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars and many more singers and their bands and dancers. But sometimes, the Super Bowl halftime shows have bands from universities, colleges, and high schools all over America, to preserve the memory.

Trophy Awarded to Green Bay Packers.

So, there you have it; a very famous sporting event that used to be called the First World Championship: AFL vs NFL. The first game evolved from bands to popular singers like the ones mentioned before. The only game that never sold out. The one competition to prove who was better: NFL or AFL. And the only game to be shot by both CBS and NBC. Eventually, the two leagues signed a contract saying that they would merge together to become one, and they would use NFL names and all of the NFL and AFL teams.

Vizag By The Ocean Sangita Biswas

The surf, sand, and palm trees, played with our emotion,

We sisters, looked with pride- it’s our Indian ocean! One day, I will bring you, my daughters, to see something I saw. The biggest temples carved in granite that will hold you in awe!

This summer I took a trip with my two sisters and mother, a women’s team. All three of us sisters had gathered together after 8 years. I chose to write about this trip since many of us in Sacramento have a home in Kolkata and its outskirts, and often look for a short trip nearby to take the kids (Puri and Digha being overcrowded). I found that this trip was perfect. It took us just an hour and half to fly from Kolkata to Vishakhapatnam (Vizag), a beautiful port city. You can also take a train called East Coast Express or other south-India bound trains.

We stayed at the Palm Beach Resort on the ocean front. It was perfect in every sense for people who live abroad. Staff were extremely courteous. Rooms were luxurious, and food was excellent. The private beach hosted the open-air grill and bar, with live music, late into the night. Now, even though all three of us sisters are older than 40, my mother put on a curfew of returning to the hotel room by 11pm (go figure)! “But that’s when the music begins Ma,” we protested in vain! Alas, at night, we all sat on the ledge of the hotel balcony, legs dangling, and listened to the musician down below, singing old romantic songs. The silhouette of the lighthouse atop the dolphin island, the soft melodies, the sea breeze, together with rhythmic sound of the waves crashing on the rocks, created magic at midnight.

I did not sleep well the first night, I was anxious to rush to the Ram Krishna beach at dawn. Next morning at 5.30 am, we walked down the beach road. The surf was wild, the horizon was golden, and we joined the joggers on the beach for a short run. I

noticed that the beach road was closed to traffic until 8 am, so that people can run, exercise, do yoga, right in the middle of the road. Several autorickshaw drivers were doing yoga next to their parked vehicles on the curb. This was unique! However, the most interesting thing for me was the gigantic black INS Kursura submarine standing at the Ram Krishna beach. It was heavily used during the India-Pakistan war in 1971. Once you go inside the submarine, you are bound to gain respect for the Indian Navy! Be careful if you are claustrophobic though, you will be pushed to the limits. But kids will love it!

After three fantastic days in Vizag, we were ready to depart to Araku valley by train. We did not get a booking in the new train with glass-dome ceiling, hence we caught the Araku passenger. We arrived at Araku after 4 hours. The journey was as beautiful as the destination. We passed 68 tunnels and beautiful waterfalls as the train slowly climbed uphill. We arrived at the Haritha Mayuri Hill resort in the middle of picturesque Araku valley. Tripadvisor has mixed reviews, but I can tell you, it’s beautiful, clean, serves awesome Andhra cuisine, with rooms completely overlooking the scenic valley. There is another resort APTDC Haritha nearby, but that has no view to speak of, along with lack of comparable service. Right after lunch, we gathered at the patio, and saw the local tribal dance by the Dhimsa tribal women. We visited a beautiful tribal museum next to the hotel. There is a coffee musuem which cannot be described on paper, it must be

experienced! Also, we learnt that, if you marry a tribal woman, you can get as much free land as you want, if it’s used for living; something to think about for homeless Indian bachelors!!

After two wonderful days, we started our journey out of Araku by car (arranged by the hotel, with an excellent driver). We began our journey down the narrow, winding, and foggy mountain terrain, lined by the virgin forests of Anantagiri range. It was breathtakingly beautiful. Coffee plantations and pepper were grown along the way. Huge jackfruits (kathal) hung from the trees along the cliff, too bad they fell into the gorge when ripe. We stopped on the mountain side to buy all kind of local spices.

Further down, we arrived at the Borra caves, which are located on the Eastern Ghats in Ananthagiri hills of Araku Valley. The cave formed millions of years ago by water activity, mainly by the Gosthani river, is a rare geological formation. The caves are basically karstic limestone structures, extending to a depth of 80 meters, and are considered the deepest caves in India. There are many tribal legends associated with the caves, and some of the tribals such as the Valmikis associate it with the Ramayana mythology. The caves were formed by water activity cutting through rich limestone, and many shapes of stalagmites and stalactites have been formed over the years. The caves are highly valuable for anthropological research, as excavations carried out earlier have unearthed stone tools of middle Paleolithic culture dating between 30,000 and 50,000 years back, which confirm human habitation in that area.

There were many tour guides available, but we felt we could explore them ourselves, so that we were not rushed. Hundreds of stairs lead us vertically down and deep inside the cave. The stalagmite formations

were illuminated with colored lights, giving them colorful and vibrant looks. As expected, one of the geological formations appeared like a Shiv linga, and the local tribal people worship there. The volume and grandeur of the caves overwhelmed me. I noticed that a large percentage of visitors were from Bengal. Naturally, the shopkeepers outside spoke broken Bengali, and served Bengali food. We decided not to eat there, but did pick up an order of the 'famous Bamboo Chicken'. It’s better if you order it before exploring the caves, so that it’s ready to be picked up after an hour or two (enough to explore the caves).

Finally, we arrived at our resort at Anantagiri, which was about after 40 min drive up the mountain from Borra caves. This was also a APDC Valley resort. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that this location was even better than Mayuri. The view of the whole valley from the cottage balcony was breathtaking in the daytime. At night, you can only see tiny clusters of lights in the valley, indicating tribal villages, and the moving necklace of lights from Araku valley trains winding their way up and down the mountains.

One thing I should mention here is that, because of the ‘MAObadi’movement in the Anantagiri hills, there is increased military activity. Only BNSL phone works at Araku. We actually had to get a new BNSL sim card for a few days.

After spending a beautiful week there, we hired a car back to Vizag (the hotel can arrange the car for you). On our way, we visited the beautiful Simhachalan temple on a mountain top. Overall, the trip was fantastic and seamless only because of extensive research done by my two wonderful sisters.

Finding Utopia- A Photographic Journey of Maldives

Sanhita Bandyopadhyay

Time moves slowly on the islands of Maldives. Morning drifts into afternoon, afternoon melts into evening, and no one ever seems in much of a hurry to do anything at all. Life here is washed in a valencia filter – gleaming white sandy beaches, coral lagoons, and blow-out golden lights. As we approach Male airport, I gaze from the aircraft window into a strange and unfamiliar world down below. At first, they look like dew drops, giant round blotches on an endless palate of blue paint. Some might mistake them to be an endless string of pearls, as tiny islands pop up surrounded by turquoise-tinged lagoons. Forested with a dazzling shade of shiny green, mostly indigenous palms held firm on white sandy

beaches. The sea, on the other hand, is temperamental and almost inconclusive – unable to fix its mind on a favorite shade. Every hundred meters, it changes color to a different shade of blue.

The airport in Male is very low key, no

glitter no fuss but once you step out it feels like you are walking the red carpet in Cannes, a hundred eyes gleaming at you, hordes of resort managers with placards in hand waiting to receive their guests. We are greeted by a group of friendly locals in beige uniforms, and they quickly whisk us to our private boat docked a few meters away. Like VIPs, we jump in and make ourselves comfortable while the staff offers refreshing cold towels and drinks. The 25-minute speedboat ride on the choppy waters can give James Bond sequel quite a run but time goes by quickly as we daze at the azure waters of the Indian Ocean while the cool breeze rejuvenates our body and mind.

At a distance, I spot the Lighthouse restaurant of Baros Maldives with its tinted white roof, a very distinct feature of the luxury hotel that will be our home for the next five days. The boat maneuvers slowly towards the resort, and we are escorted by a range of colorful reef fishes and baby sharks on both sides to be received by the general manager and his crew of happy embracing staff welcoming us with glass of champagne. The arrival to the island was a surreal experience and what amazed me even more was the idea how an island just about a kilometer in diameter in the middle of the vast Indian Ocean can house almost every essential thing a family could need.

It’s mid-December, the morning bright

and crisp but the sweltering heat makes us want to take cover quickly. Luckily, the situation is short lived, stepping into the island we land in a tropical paradise, lush vegetation everywhere with a wide range of exotic trees and plants, beautifully landscaped gardens, huge tree canopies providing plenty of shade.

I hardly see any guests around. Hammocks adore palm trees, plush sofas spread across the main lobby and bar area, neatly folded bath towels tucked at various corners of the island. We had booked two villas for ourselves,

one on the beach and another on the water.

A quick check in and we are brought to

our respective rooms. The beach villa was set in flower glades by the beach; it was literally 10 steps away from the sea and exemplified the essence of the Maldives

with its tropical grace and simplicity. One of the highlights was its exotic open-air bathroom – a sandstone-walled tropical garden.

Imagine waking up in the morning to

spectacular and uninterrupted views of the clear turquoise lagoon and quickly realizing that the room we are in is perched upon the same lagoon. Staying at the water villa was an experience by itself. Often, I would sit on my bed, sipping some lovely warm Earl Grey followed by lounging in the terrace to soak up the views of the world’s biggest aquarium under my feet only to catch a kaleidoscope of fishes swim by. Staying in the water villa felt like a total escape from everyday life. Completely secluded from the rest of the island, only miles and miles of unending views of the lagoon and ocean. A thriving house reef under us and a private deck for slipping into the lagoon for snorkeling whenever we wanted.

If you enjoy snorkeling and diving,

Maldives is the place to be. Maldives has the seventh largest coral reef in the world which

is home to 1100 species of fish and 187 different species of corals.

One of the reasons we picked Baros was

mainly for its famous house reef. The coral reef houses the most diverse underwater ecosystem on the planet and acts as a protective rampart for the island. Without the reef, the beaches would be washed away and eventually the whole island would sink beneath the sea. The recent high sea-surface temperature has caused bleaching of the coral reefs, where algae that lives in the coral is expelled due to stress caused by extreme and sustained changes in temperature, turning the coral white and putting it at risk of dying. We participated in the coral regeneration program in conserving the reef surrounding the Baros Island. Life however was just so fair the following few days when the most difficult thing we did everyday was to maneuver through the serious traffic of underwater marine life. For my son Suhaan, swimming with sea turtles, manta rays, barracudas, and baby sharks all at the same time was a moment he still can’t get over.

The food was spectacular – a fusion of a few different worlds. But like they say, you can take a Bengali out of Bengal but you can never take Bengal out of a Bengali. To our utter amazement, we found out that the resident chef of the island is a Bengali. What happens next? All hell breaks loose on our table. Fusion takes a giant leap and our taste buds thrive on the all-time Bengali favorites

– Chingri macher malai curry to Rui macher kalia.

Over the next few days, we immersed

ourselves in a plethora of activities from chasing dolphins in the Indian Ocean, to touring the island reef on glass bottom kayaks and pampering ourselves in the resort spa. Evenings were about romantic dinners by the beach watching one-of-a-kind sunsets and endless adda with family.

Holiday has never been this gratifying

for me. I felt once more how simple and frugal a thing is happiness: a glass of wine, time with family, frequent dives, a roasted chestnut, and the sound of the sea. If you are looking for a dream getaway, far from the hustle and bustle of your daily lives, look no further, fly into Maldives! Sanhita Bandyopadhyay is a Business Analyst in Cisco. Sri Sri Chandi Swami Prapannananda

Durga Puja is not complete without the reciting of Sri Sri Chandi. It is a book which is a part of the Markandeya Purana. It describes the advent of the Divine Mother on three different occasions to vanquish the evil forces on earth and reestablish law and order. In fact, out of a story from this book that the Durga puja is celebrated. Consisting of 700 verses and half verses, this book is also known as Devi Mahatma and Durga Saptasati.

When Durga puja is performed, someone in an adjoining place performs a short worship of the book and then chants audibly all the verses. As a part of the worship, meditation on Chandi is done. The third verse of the meditation is a prayer which is a gist of the book and worth mentioning: May Sri Sri Chandi the destroyer of the demons Madhu-Kaitava, Mahisasura, Dhumra-lochana, Chanda, Munda, Raktavija, Shumbha, and Nishumbha, and giver of unique victory, and is accompanied by millions of companion protect me.

Performing formal purification of the place, worship articles, and himself, the Chandi worshipper performs worship of five deities; and then, invoking the presence of the Mother, worships her with five articles and then starts the recitation. It is customary to read a few verses like Argala Stotra, Kilak verses, Devi Kavach, and Ratri sukta before beginning the exact book.

There are several beautiful verses offered as adorations to the Divine Mother on different occasions by Gods.

For example: The hymn to Mother Durga:

Salutation always to Durga who takes one across the difficulties, who is essence, who is the author of everything; who is knowledge of discrimination; who is blue-black as also smoke-like in complexion (Ch. 5, vs 12).

We prostrate before her who is at once most gentle and most terrible; we salute her again and again. Salutation to her who is the support of the world. Salutation to the Devi who is of the form of volition (Ch. 5, vs 13).

Salutation to the Devi, to Mahadevi. Salutation always to her who is ever auspicious. Salutation to her who is primordial cause and the sustaining power. With attention, we have made obeisance to her (Ch. 5, vs 9).

Salutation to her who is terrible, to her who is eternal. Salutation to Gauri, the supporter (of the Universe). Salutation always to her who is of the form of the moon and moon-light and happiness itself (CH. 5, vs 10).

Many such beautiful verses may be quoted.

May Divine Mother bless us all is my earnest prayer.

Swami Prapannananda, Minister and Teacher of Ramakrishna Order, India, and currently the Minister-in-Charge of the Vedanta Society of Sacramento.

Brief History of Utsav

“Utsav is a nonprofit organization promo-ting Bengali culture in Sacramento Valley. Utsav was founded in 2002, with one goal: creating a positive and enjoyable experience of friendship, happiness, and harmony via our Bengali heritage. Although Utsav is predominantly a Bengali organization so far, we want to reach other communities as well. Membership in Utsav is not limited to any particular race, religion, or ethnic origin”. The Journey

The Beginning: It was a fine afternoon of Saraswasti Puja of 2002. A few new Bengali arrivals in Sacramento were standing in front of 1317 Montridge Ct., El Dorado Hills, reminiscing over the Puja celebrations in their homeland in India. The participants in that gathering – Deb Saha, Udayan Chanda (UC), Arun Chowdhury, Samrat Basu, Anirban Bhattacharya, Suvayu Bose, and Joy Mukherjee – all felt the need to host their own Durga Puja in Sacramento, and the idea of an organization was thus born. In an hour, they came up with the name, Utsav, first proposed by Suvayu Bose. Later, Mala Paul designed the Utsav logo.

A few weeks after that momentous gathering, several Sacramento Bengali old timers were contacted with the help of Mita Chakraborty. Everyone who we spoke to got excited to have our own Durga Puja and to have our own organization. Through this process of joyous interactions between the new arrivals and the old timers of Sacramento, Utsav found some strong pillars in the names of Adi and Mitra Choudri, Somen Nandi, Biswanath Mukherjee, and others, who had an immediate impact to make Utsav a grand success.

In July 2002, Utsav was officially formed. Adi Choudri, Deb Saha, Udayan Chanda, Arijit Chattopadhyay, and Joy Mukherjee – with smiles, happiness, and glitters in their eyes – signed the official paperwork. We

celebrated our first Durga Puja in October 2002. The participation of member families was outstanding and the joy was boundless. With time, the Utsav tree has expanded and the bondage among families grew deeper.

The baton of responsibility transferred to other able hands from the hands of those who started the organization. But the founders and senior members continued to remain very active in different roles.

Utsav members include 80-90 families, from which several individuals are elected every two years to serve as officers. (For the first few years, our elections were held annually.) So far, many of our members have ably served our organization with the leadership of our following Presidents:

2003: Arijit Chattopadhyay 2004: Udayan Chanda 2005: Mitra Choudri 2006: Biswanath Mukherjee 2007: Dipankar Chattopadhyay 2008: Deb Saha 2009: Adi Choudri 2010: Sharmila Mukherjee 2011-12: Joy Mukherjee 2013-14: Ajay Joshi 2015-16: Sanjib Nayak 2017-18: Rajat Saha

Our Activities: We organize several annual events: Durga

Puja; Saraswati Puja; Picnic + Annual General Meeting (AGM); etc. Our events enjoy strong participation from our children. Our next generation – for whom exposure to Bengali culture is invaluable – is very active in our cultural programs, literary activities, and puja activities. It is gratifying to note that many of our young members, even after going to college, still come back for our Pujas and look forward to attending them.

Our other activities include the following: Cultural Program productions, as parts of

Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja, Anandamela, India Day, California State Fair, etc.

In Memoriam Dr. Amit Ray

It is our great sadness that Dr. Amit Ray (Amit-da) passed away on Monday, February 5, 2017, at his residence in Kolkata, India. Amit-da was born in Mymensingh District (now in Bangladesh) and was educated in Scottish Church Collegiate School and later attended Presidency College, Kolkata. He went on to receive his Bachelors degree from the prestigious Bengal Engineering College (now The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology), Sibpore. Amit-da received his Masters degree from King’s College, London, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering from the University of London, UK. Amit-da worked for many reputed electrical engineering companies including Otis elevators and Gregory-Salisbury & Company to name a few.

Amit-da was an active member of Utsav and the Ramakrishna Order of Sacramento. He organized many cultural programs related to spreading the ideology of Ramakrishna Order. He was very loving, a great singer, and a true music lover besides being a very sophisticated gentleman. Amit-da left behind his beloved wife, Dr. Tapati Ray, in California and his son, Mr. Orin Ray, in Colorado and countless friends and well-wishers. He will be missed by all of us.
