PERFORM A FREE FAMILY FRIENDLY
CONCERT
Family Concert: Pirates and an Elephant! Sunday, February 10 at 3:00pm
St. Joseph’s Campus in the church
Listeners of all ages will enjoy music and tales about ghost-ships, pirates and a baby elephant. Born 200 years ago (May 22, 1813), Wagner completed The Flying Dutchman in 1841, and the opera about a ship’s captain cursed to sail the seas forever was his first major work as a fully mature composer. The creators of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies named the ghostly ship captained by Davy Jones (in Dead Man’s Chest) after the Wagnerian title character. Narrator Jake Endres teams up with the MSO to relate Jean de Brunhoff’s charming story of the orphaned pachyderm who grows up to become King of the Elephants.
The one-hour includes:
Richard Wagner – Overture to The Flying Dutchman, WWV 63 Francis Poulenc/Jean Françaix – The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant Klaus Badelt – Pirates of the Caribbean
Jake Endres, Narrator William Schrickel, Conductor
All MSO concerts are free of charge; free-will donations are accepted.

LENTEN REGULATIONS
The Christian faithful are to do penance through prayer, fasting, abstinence and by exercising works of piety and charity. All Fridays through the year, and especially during Lent, are penitential days. ABSTINENCE: All who have reached their 14th birthday are to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays during Lent. FASTING: All those who are 18 or older, until their 59th birthday are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Only one full meal is allowed on days of fast. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s need. But together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. The obligation does not apply to those whose health or ability to work would be affected seriously. People in doubt about fast or abstinence should consult a parish priest or confessor.

Parish News
Parishioners: Do you think of yourself as a bold witness to Christ? In this weekend’s readings, we hear from three of the boldest witnesses for our Lord, the stuff of which true saints are made. The first comes from the book of Isaiah. When Isaiah spoke, you listened, and you remembered what he said. The second reading is from a letter of Saint Paul. He talks about the way Christ appeared to the various disciples, and boasts that he toiled harder than all the others in spreading the gospel. And in our gospel, we hear of the call of Saint Peter, who would go on to lead the whole Church after Christ’s ascension, and suffer martyrdom because of his witness. These are three examples of that kind of person to which people look, they have a rock solid faith and did not hesitate to live their lives in accord with that faith. And yet, what we hear from these three in our readings is not confidence or self-importance. Isaiah says he is doomed, because he is a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips. Saint Paul calls himself least of all the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle because he persecuted the Church of God. And we can all identify with the words of Saint Peter in the Gospel: “Depart from me Lord, for I am a sinful man.” If it had been left up to them, none of them would have considered themselves worthy to be God’s messengers. You could hear them say, “Lord, I don’t have what it takes to do this for you. That’s not me. I can’t.” They would not have chosen themselves for the vocation of prophet, apostle to the Gentiles, or first pope of the Catholic Church. How could lowly Isaiah stand up to kings? How could Paul, the great persecutor of the Church, be a credible witness for the Church? How could Peter, who would go on to deny Christ three times on the way to the cross, guide the Church in its earliest stages? Surely there were better, more suitable candidates for those missions. You’ll notice that the Lord does not disagree with them. He does not say, “Oh, come on. You’re not so bad. Look, you’re not perfect, but you’re a lot better than most.” Nor does he take back His call. He does not say, “You know, you’re right, you are sinful and pathetic. Never mind, I’ll find someone else.” He knows exactly who He has called. To Isaiah, he says, “You’re right, your lips are unclean, you are unworthy. Here, I will purify them and make you worthy.” Saint Paul, after saying he is not worthy to be called an apostle, says, “But I am what I am. And the grace of Christ has been effective through me anyway.” And to Saint Peter, he simply says, “Do not be afraid. Do not be afraid.” These three were woefully inadequate to be witnesses for God, to spread the gospel to the world. That is why God chose them. God, in His infinite wisdom, chooses the weak to be His messengers. We can all look inside ourselves and come up with very convincing reasons why we are unworthy, why we are not fit for the vocation to which we think God might be calling us. God does not disagree that we are unworthy. But He chooses us anyway. And He remains within each one of us, and He says to us, “Do not be afraid. Do not be afraid.” He offers us the courage to proclaim the truth to all the world that Christ is Lord, that he died for your sins and mine, and that the happiness, the hope and the salvation of each one of us lies in loving God by following His commandments and loving our neighbors as ourselves. If you want to know of what Isaiah and Saint Paul and Saint Peter were made, look in the mirror. Weakness, sinfulness, doubt, fear - that is what was inside them. God takes these things and replaces them with His strength, His holiness, His courage and an unwavering faith in Him. We can be that bold witness. We just have to let go of what’s holding us back. Let go of the doubt and the fear, and let God replace it with His strength. –Fr. Liekhus

Calligraphy Craft Group Cabin fever getting you down? Does your Bible need a little dusting off? Well, join us for a look at the calligraphy and art of St. John's Bible! We're forming an informal group of enthusiasts who seek some midwinter inspiration, to learn about the making of the St. John's Bible and its illumination and try our hand at practicing our own calligraphy. This is not intended to be a formal class but more of a fun gathering for a few weeks to help inspire us. We will meet for three Tuesdays (February 26, March 5 and 12) from 7:00 to 8:30pm in St. Joseph’s Campus Auxiliary Room (just off the social hall kitchen). [Basic calligraphy pens & paper will be available for those who are new to this art.]
St. Joseph's Prayer Ministry This Sunday after the 8:30am Mass, we will have a prayer team available at the front of the church. If you have special intentions that need prayers, or would like someone to pray with you, please come to the front of the church directly after Mass to meet with one of our team members. You can also make a prayer request through our parish website, www.stjoeshopkins.org. Just click on the “PRAY” button and fill
in the form. If you have any questions, please contact Denise Hirl at (952) 935-0716.
PCYI – The Protection of Children and Youth Initiative Here are more photos from Sunday January 27, when our Faith Formation students in Grades 1 – 5 and their parents together enjoyed a very entertaining presentation of children’s safety. Rachael Kroog came and made the topic both fun and memorable, including animals, interaction and music as part of her “show.” This is part of St. Gabriel’s commitment to keeping our children safe from any potential harm. There will be a similar presentation at the High School level for our 9th & 10th Graders and parents this Sunday evening, February 10.
To Fr. Liekhus, Fr. Goman, St. Gabriel parishioners, St. John’s School staff, St. John’s students and St. Gabriel’s staff: Endless gratitude for the prayers, love and support you have given all of us during the past several weeks. We have been overwhelmed and humbled by your concern, and definitely felt the power of prayer flow through us. We have experienced firsthand the beauty of a parish family.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
