ENERGY SAVINGS Occupancy sensors deliver maximum energy savings, exceeding the savings provided by other control solutions (i.e. scheduling), by ensuring that lighting is only on when people are present. NexLight, the world’s top producer of design built and easy to use lighting control systems, continues its mission by providing new sensors that save energy and assist in achieving additional design goals.

EFFICIENCY INCENTIVESThe use of occupancy sensors can assist building owners in earning Corporate Tax Incentives including credits, deduc-tions, exemptions and rebates based on the equipment installed. To qualify, a building must meet or exceed the energy performance required. Visit www.dsireusa.org for more information and updates for your local area.

SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGSBy designing beyond the requirements of codes, design teams can provide even greater energy savings and work toward sustainable building practices. LEED certification points are awarded with correct application and use of sensors. The result is another way of providing the commu-nity with green and energy efficient buildings.

ENERGY CODE COMPLIANCEPerfectSense products provide convenient code compliant Automatic-ON or Manual-ON control and are full of innova-tive features. Our sensors use Passive Infrared (PIR), Ultrasonic, and a combination of the two, commonly referred to as Dual-Technology. Both Automatic-ON and Manual-ON sensors meet the Automatic-OFF requirement of all major energy codes, including ASHRAE 90.1 (2007 and earlier), IECC and California’s Title 24.ASHRAE 90.1-2010 is now including the requirement for many spaces to be Manual-ON. A space may use Automatic-ON control, however the Automatic-ON func-tion cannot turn on more than 50% of the space lighting. Whichever method your space requires, PerfectSense offers a complete selection of compliant solutions.

AUTOMATIC-ON + BI-LEVEL CONTROLBi-level switching has the potential to save energy by enabling occupants to use just as much lighting as they want, and is a requirement by EPAct, California’s Title 24 and ASHRAE 90.1 2010. Bi-level Auto-on control is when one zone is turned on automatically (by the sensor) and the other zone must be turned on manually (local switch). This method of control has been shown to use 52% less energy* than Automatic-on only. Additionally, many occu-pants are comfortable working in lower lighting levels. The result are dramatic energy savings and enhancing occu-pant comfort. (* Based on California Lighting Technology Center research 2009.)

PerfectSense gives engineers and facility managers more control options than ever before, offering sensors that are the best fit for any application. Sensors featuring Passive Infrared, Ultrasonic or Dual Technology are ideally suited for different applications. Let’s take a closer look at each type.

PASSIVE INFRAREDPassive Infrared (PIR) technology detects occupancy in the space by sensing the difference between temperatures of a human body in motion and the background space. Requiring a line of sight for detection, PIR sensors feature accurate area coverage cut-offs.

ULTRASONICUltrasonic (US) technology operates by transmitting an ultrasonic sound wave into the space and measuring the speed at which they return back to the sensor. Occupant movements change the frequency of the waves. This means ultrasonic sensors can detect movement around partitions or indirect line of sight.

DUAL TECHNOLOGYDual Technology operates by combining PIR and ultrasonic detec-tion into a single device. This technology increases the accuracy of detection while decreasing the potential of false ON or false OFF triggers.

SENSOR TECHNOLOGIES

DUAL TECHNOLOGY BEST APPLICATIONS:+ Classrooms+ Large conference rooms+ Large offices+ Lecture halls+ Cafeterias

ULTRASONIC BEST APPLICATIONS:+ Restrooms+ Open office spaces+ Enclosed hallways + Stairways

PIR BEST APPLICATIONS:+ Small offices+ Warehouses+ High ceiling locations+ Library book stacks/aisles+ Lobby / common areas+ Computer rooms

APPLICATION EXAMPLES

Large conference rooms require detection that will account for occupants that may be still for long periods of time. Dual technol-ogy sensors will be able to detect minor motion to keep lights on as long as the space is occupied.

Copy rooms, IT rooms, and janitor’s closets are ideal for occu-pancy based controls. With a wall or switch mounted PIR sensor, lights can be shut off just minutes after the occupant leaves saving hours of wasted lighting energy each day.

Classrooms large and small require the ability to detect minor motion. Ceiling mounted dual technology sensor models are preferred to get complete room detection. In larger rooms a second sensor and power pack could be added for multizone control.

In private offices, use a PIR or dual tech sensor depending on room layout and field of view. Take advantage of the integrated light level feature to keep lights off when sufficient daylight is present.

Lighting in restrooms is best controlled with ultrasonic sensors to eliminate hundreds or even thousands of hours of unneeded on-time during a year. A ceiling-mounted ultrasonic senses motion around restroom stalls for greater coverage area.

For the open or partitioned office spaces, either the dual tech or ultrasonic type may be appropriate. Wall mounted or on the ceiling, expand coverage of large spaces by linking multiple sensors together to control lighting in a coordinated way. Use these sensors to cover the area in zones with 10-20% overlap as illustrated above.

Understanding daily space usage patterns are essential to properly apply occupancy sensing in a commercial building space. If you are able to answer “YES” to some of the following questions, adding occupancy sensors are a viable control option.

+ Are there periods of time when the space is unoccupied?

+ Is energy wasted due to lights being left on when no one is in the space?

+ Are lights left on after business hours?

+ Is the space used only intermittently?

+ Could some or all area lights be turned off during the day?

3. LAYOUT & SPECIFICATIONCOVERAGE PATTERNSOnce the technology is chosen, the next step is to select the correct coverage size and shape. A typical design guideline will call for a minimum of 90% coverage area of the square footage in a room. Each product cut sheet includes specific coverage area specifications.

It’s important to know the typical use of space. Will occu-pants be engaged in major motions (walking, using a forklift) or minor motion (reading, typing). Coverage changes depending on motion type.

NEMA TESTING PerfectSense understands the importance in producing the highest quality products. When it comes to occupancy sensors, that means producing sensors with consistent detection while reducing False Triggers. All PerfectSense products are designed to meet and exceed the quality and consistency standards set forth in the National Electrical Manufacturers Association guide publication. The NEMA guide establishes two testing parameters as major and minor motion detection. It defines minor motion as the movement of a person sitting at a desk reaching for a telephone, turning the pages of a book, opening a file folder, or picking up a coffee cup. Major motion is defined as the movement of a person walking in or through a space.

CHOOSE POWER PACKSPower packs are a necessary component providing three core purposes to most occupancy sensor projects. Power packs provide power to low voltage sensors and other control devices, respond to signals from those devices and switch their internal relays to control the connected loads.

Power packs can also provide advanced features such as switch inputs, inputs for scheduling, and dimming control. Before selecting a power pack, consider the following factors.

Voltage: Pay attention to the input ratings of each power pack model.

Low voltage output needs: Typically listed in (mA) be sure the power pack provides enough current to power all of the connected devices for that zone.

Relay ratings: Power Packs have specific ratings for different load types (i.e., incandescent, fluorescent, motor). Make sure the relay is rated for the type of load to be controlled and the load being switched does not exceed the load rating of the power pack.

To protect against the potentially damaging effects of high inrush current common in newer electronic ballasts, select power packs with zero crossing circuitry technology.

4. INSTALL & CONFIGUREINSTALL THE SENSORDuring installation contractors should position the sensor so it has the best view of the entire coverage area, while minimizing the possibility of false ON and OFF triggers. Wire sensors according to instructions. This will eliminate any functional problems or sensor damage. If necessary, adjust sensor settings such as the sensitivity, time delay or daylight sensing to match the activity levels of the space being controlled.

Be sure to increase the off time delay setting for spaces where minor motion and limited activity will be taking place to further reduce the risk of false offs. For increased energy efficiency shorten off time delay settings especially for areas of high traffic. For restrooms, stairwells or areas with limited or no natural lighting use caution and set longer off time delays to ensure occupant safety and secu-rity.

WIRING POWERPACKSIntelligent power packs provide inputs so that multiple control devices can be connected. This enables customiza-tion of control scenarios for different applications and end user preferences. Use intelligent power packs when multi-device, manual switching, and dimming applica-tions are desired.

PHOTOCELL CONTROLSMost occupancy sensors include an integrated daylight sensor to be used in building spaces that receive daylight. This function is designed to ensure the occupancy sensors will keep lights off in occupied spaces, when the natural daylight coming into the space exceeds the set threshold. If a space has inadequate natural daylight the occupancy sensor will turn lighting on.

PROGRAMMING AND TESTINGMake post-installation adjustment as needed. This is not uncommon and is often due to last minute changes in placement of furniture or fixtures. A walk test of the detec-tion area is a common method of ensuring the sensor is located and configured properly for the space.

MOUNTING SENSORS PerfectSense products fall into three categories of mounting: Ceiling, Wall, and Wall Switch types. Only wall mount types may be mounted on both the wall or the ceiling. This is important for applications where one of the surfaces may be unsuitable for sensor installation.

MOUNTING POWERPACKSPower packs are often mounted to the outside of a junction box, placing them in the plenum space, so make sure the power pack is plenum rated. Smaller power packs can be installed inside a standard junc-tion box.

WIRING POWERPACKSIntelligent power packs provide inputs so that multiple control devices can be connected. INTEGRATING SENSORS WITH CONTROLSOccupancy sensors that operate independently in a space, are referred to as “stand alone” sensors providing no infor-mation of occupancy status to other building systems. To increase control and energy savings, PerfectSense low voltage occupancy sensors include isolated Form C relays to seamlessly integrate with Building Management Systems (BMS), HVAC (VAV controllers) or NexLight 2-Wire Lighting Controls Systems. These relays providing real time occupancy status “intelligence” to other systems, adding signifcantly to a building wide control strategy and potential savings. PerfectSense has the industries only sensor with multiple relay outputs for greater connectivity to building controls.

MULTILAYERED CONTROL STRATEGYFor the next level of efficiency, consider combining occu-pancy sensors with other controls such as lighting control panels or daylight harvesting controls. A multilayered control strategy can assist in meeting energy codes and green sustainability guidelines as well as provide maxi-mized energy savings.

The images below illustrate an example of how a low voltage sensor could be networked to a building BMS or 2-Wire lighting control system.

PerfectSense®

Intelligent Building Occupancy Sensors

Overview:The PS-DTC24 increases area lighting energy efficiency quickly and easily by combining industry leading Passive Infrared (PIR) technology with Ultrasonic for superior detection. Factory preset to deliver significant savings out of the box, this sensor has additional options to further increase energy savings if desired. The PerfectSense PS-DTC24 is a low-voltage sensor that works with PerfectSense class 2 power supply (PSPP1277), to automatically control lighting. The sensor turns the lights on and keeps them on when occupancy is detected and will turn the lights off after the delayed-off time has expired.

Operation:The sensor first sees motion using the PIR detection and then activates Ultrasonic to confirm and indicate continued occu-pancy. The standard factory programming is set to meet the standards of most common area applications with a 10 minute off delay time.

Additional Operational Features: Walk-Through Mode: useful when a room is momentarily occupied, like a storage area. When a person enters the room, the lights turn on. If the person leaves the room before the 2.5 minute walk-through timer expires the sensor will turn the lights off. If the person stays in the room longer than 2.5 minutes the sensor will proceed to standard operation.

Single-Tech Mode: Only one technology is active in this mode. Dip switch selectable, a user may determine that the space may only require one technology to properly detect the area. One sensor model can now act as a PIR only, Ultrasonic only or Dual-tech sensor.

Daylight Sensor: The integrated daylight sensor allows for ambient light override functionality. If this setting is enabled, the controlled lighting load will only turn on if the ambient light present is less than the preset level.

Adaptive Learning: Patented adaptive learning technology will automatically increase or decrease the off delay time in response to the occupancy and environmental conditions of the area over a period of time. For example, if there is frequent motion detection, the sensor will automatically shorten the off delay time to better meet the conditions of the room. This technology also detects false off conditions. If this happens, the off delay time duration will immediately be lengthened to avoid future false off conditions.

Overview

The Wall-Mounted Dual Technology Occupancy Sensor employs both passive infrared (PIR) and ultrasonic technology to accurately detect occupancy and automatically turn on lighting.

To reduce the occurrence of false on events, this sensor employs PIR technology to detect major motion. Once lighting has been turned on, it employs highly sensitive PIR and ultrasonic technology to detect minor motion and keep lighting on while areas remain occupied. When the room or area is no longer occupied, the sensor turns off lighting after a pre-set time delay.

The low profile sensor is wall-mounted for greatest sensitivity to motion in large areas with obstructions. With a 110º degree field of view and up to 2500 square feet of coverage area when mounted at 8 ft. off the ground, the Wall-mounted Dual Technology Occupancy Sensor is ideal for conference rooms, classrooms, bathrooms, and large office areas.

These wall-mount sensors also incorporate an integral light level sensor to prevent lighting from switching On when sufficient ambient light is present, such as is commonly found in windowed areas.

Installation and configuration is simple. The sensor readily mounts to walls and drop ceilings and features front located adjustments for setting sensitivity and time delay. The sensor also features an isolated relay for use with building automation and HVAC systems.

Common Stand Alone Control StrategiesPerfectSense

®

Intelligent Building Occupancy Sensors

45

Auto On / Auto Off is the most basic occupancy control strategy. Requiring only a standard power pack and low voltage sensor, the space is controlled based on occupnacy with no manual override control. Line voltage wall switch sensors may also be configured to work in this manner. Consult local codes for using this scenario in approved locations.

50% Manual On / Auto Off requires one lighting load to be switched on automatically when occupancy is detected by an occupancy sensor, while a second lighting load can be turned on manually by the occupant if desired. Both loads can then be turned off manually or via the occupancy sensor timing out. Commonly required by building codes (such as California Title 24), this is an easy and convenient method of delivering extra energy savings without inconveniencing the occupant.

Manual On / Auto Off is the commonly used method for areas using a single lighting load. Occupants manually turn lights onBe sure to use a PS-PP7000X power pack designed to work with low voltage switches.

Going above and beyond Manual On / Auto Off can be done in a number of ways. The addition of photocells for daylight harvesting and or 0-10v dimming are two of the most popular choices for enahnced levels of control and energy savings in locations with large windows, conference rooms, or open office areas.
