PERFECT STORM: NUCOAL FIELD GUIDEDP9-9191

PERFECT STORMNuCoal’s 3rd Temple Heights Reserve Regiment had been fighting the Colonial Expeditionary Force invaders for days. The Terra Novan lines collapsed under the relentless onslaught of Earth’s implacable soldiers, and the allied forces fell back to the city-state’s unique crescent shaped mesa. Their fighting strength was cut down to a company-sized force, currently dug in against the stone-head cliffs.

Sr. Sergeant Kavanaugh’s mixed GREL and human regiment braced themselves for the final battle—The CEF’s next push would be decisive. He took comfort that he was among friends, some new. The mysterious Koreshi had arrived at Temple Heights and provided reinforcements to the Terra Novan coalition days prior to the attack. He wondered what made the Koreshi such fierce fighters. His men were awestruck and fearful of the ones called the En Koreshi. He had witnessed one of these En Koreshi attack a CEF Frame single handedly—The warrior killed the pilot with a point blank shot to the cockpit before disappearing into the fray of the battle.

Above him, lightning lit up the night sky and the roll of a desert storm could be heard approaching. Kavanaugh cursed the invaders as he closed the hatch of his Cuirassier and ordered the 3rd to move out, as the first CEF artillery shells struck.

NUCOAL FIELD GUIDEThe Perfect Storm NuCoal Field Guide contains complete army lists for the NuCoal Self Defense Force and the Port Arthur Korps. It also continues the story of the the War for Terra Nova and is the first in a series of Field Guides for the factions in the Heavy Gear Universe.

ThE NEW COALITION

TIghT COrNErSEddie stared intently at the tri-deo screen, watching the progress of the racing team he was sponsoring as they rushed through the tight corners of Boyce Canyon. Kaya and Zella, the team’s two racers, had been pushing the limits of the company’s top line Gears every day for hours on end. Every time Zella made a turn, Eddie’s stomach sunk as he wondered if she would wreck her Jerboa into the walls. Zella already had a horrific accident during the testing phase of the Jerboa, and since then Eddie, normally a self-described flamboyant daredevil, turned into a nervous wreck any time she raced. Eddie told himself he had no reason to be worried about the test pilot; but he knew that was only a lie.

Sitting next to him in the VIP lounge, Isaac Verton watched the race with clinical precision. Issac was Eddie’s business partner and best friend, but didn’t comprehend the human component of racing like he did. For the GREL, the race was a test of the machine and nothing more, but for Eddie racing was an expression of human accomplishment. Racing was about the thrill of speed and the risks that came with a high speed turn or an extreme jump. For Eddie, racing made life more vibrant and fulfilling; at least when Eddie was the one in the driver’s seat. There was a part of him that really wanted to get back into racing again, but age had started to slow down his reflexes. Eddie’s experience told him that losing to some two-bit upstart punk would wound his pride; and he wasn’t willing to gamble that away just yet.

Watching Zella whip her Red and White Jerboa past her team-mate Kaya and take the lead in the race, Eddie wondered if he had made a mistake by sponsoring the race and his company’s team. He winced as the screen was engulfed in a brilliant fireball; another team’s Jerboa had fired its jump jets damaged in a previous impact with the result a spectacular explosion.

“Tell me again why we’re sponsoring this race?” Eddie asked Isaac, quickly following the question by finishing off a glass of bourbon he had been nursing since the start of the race.

His partner of twenty six cycles looked over and shrugged, “I believe you said it was advertising. But you had said before that you were glad that we were not racing in the Deathtrack series any more. I had wondered why you had changed your mind.”

Eddie sighed as he looked down at his empty glass. What had prompted him to sponsor this crazy race? The downcast and defeated looks Zella and Kaya gave him after Deathtrack’s commission banned his company - and its signature Gear was the real reason. Eddie couldn’t deny the pair the joys he had felt racing.

He still remembered the night when Zella had regained consciousness at the Prince Gable hospital after the accident during the trial run of the Jerboa prototype. Zella had smiled at him through the pain and thanked him for letting her feel the thrill of the ride again. The usually taciturn GREL pilot, who normally had such a hard time feeling ‘human’, knew exactly how he felt when he raced. Taking racing away from her would be robbing Zella of the only time she could really feel alive. As a fellow racer, Eddie knew he couldn’t deny her that feeling.

Looking back to the screen, Eddie’s face broke into a small smile as he realized that Zella and Kaya were going to win the race. Glancing over to Isaac, he stated “I guess I just can’t get away from it. I’m too programmed to be a part of racing.”

Issac responded “I did not realize you were hypnotrained like me...” His face twisted into confusion as he murmured “Yes, that makes sense”.

Eddie started laughing at his partner’s misunderstanding, “Yeah. Totally got hypnotrained.”Sample

BArrINgTON BASIN & WESTrIDgE SETTLEMENTS

Featuring some of the most inhospitable locales on Terra Nova, the settlement of the Barrington Basin and Westridge Mountains occurred despite the difficulties they provide for a number of reasons.   Simple greed, a desire for freedom, and religious enlightenment are a few of the reasons for migration into these dry and scorched regions, and even with the harsh conditions, millions of Terra Novans currently call these regions of the Badlands home.

Prior to the withdrawal of the Concordat government from Terra Nova and reconstruction period four centuries ago, the Barrington Basin and Westridge mountain range saw very little settlement. With the exception of a few small homesteads and the occasional oasis tower, the deadly Badlands region was devoid of human settlement. Most settlers were political or religious dissidents, criminals, or isolationists seeking to escape the polar city-states.

In the aftermath of the Concordat withdrawal, polar populations looked to the Badlands as a location to thrive. Places like Erech and Nineveh, which were settled just prior to the withdrawal, saw a surge in growth. The new settlements were colonized not for political or religious freedom; instead a new breed of Badlanders had a singular interest in exploiting natural resources the Barrington Basin offered.

While most modern Badlanders have lived in the region for generations, many of their ancestors  left the polar leagues for one reason or another. Antipathy to the polar factions has carried through the generations, and has only been reinforced by the numerous wars and skirmishes fought in the region. Honeyed words and empty promises mean little to the typical Badlander, and one of the greatest challenges when establishing NuCoal was overcoming resentment of the CEF’s harsh occupation during the War of the Alliance. Few Badlanders were eager to be leashed to another master so soon after regaining their independence.

While Port Arthur is the senior partner in the NuCoal alliance, the stranded population of former CEF soldiers and officers did not always enjoy the prestige they currently command. In TN1913, elements of the 8th CEF Fleet landed in the north of the Barrington Basin in what is now Port Arthur. This large beachhead became the largest CEF encampment on Terra Nova, and was designed to be the staging point of a drive deep into the Mekong Dominion. If successful, this plan would seize strategic oil fields and cripple Southern production capabilities.

Before the CEF forces could advance into the southern jungles and Mekong city-states, they had to first subjugate the region around their West Base site. With little to no organized military in the neighboring settlements, the Barrington Basin was brought under Earth’s strict control. The measures utilized by the CEF to maintain control in the populated area were excessively cruel and lasted longer than any other occupation

Some anthropologists speculate that as any semblance of normal society degraded in the polar region when the Concordat gate ships withdrew back to Earth, people fled to the Badlands to escape the marauding bands, territorial wars, and the general lawlessness that ensued. Both the Barrington Basin and Westridge Mountains were particularly attractive to migrants due to the ease of access from the Gamma Maglev line, and the scientific consensus is that tens of thousands of would-be settlers entered the region during this period. Sadly, most of these settlements failed within a few decades of being established. Husks of abandoned oasis towers and farmsteads are still found in unlikely locations by intrepid explorers.

Historically the majority of settlements in the Barrington Basin and Westridge Mountain region lived in small homesteads or isolated oasis towers. Such communities of a couple of hundreds to a few thousands struggle to eke out a living in the inhospitable region. These Badlanders value self sufficiency, ruggedness, and most of all independence. Cycles of living in an extreme environment forces those characteristics to come to the forefront of importance, and most Badlanders in the Barrington and Westridge region look down on their polar cousins as soft and repressed either in religious or political choice.

BArrINgTON BASIN & WESTrIDgE SETTLEMENTS

ThE WAr OF ThE ALLIANCEduring the war. Thousands of Badlanders caught during partisan operations throughout the war were rounded up and interned at concentration camps outside of present day Port Arthur. After the war, many Badlanders in the region continued to hold grudges against PAK because of their former affiliation with the hated CEF. If the indignities of occupation were not enough, most of the conflicts in the Badlands occurred in the Barrington Basin. As the CEF poured through the region, thousands of people were displaced from their homes, and often in the wake of the invaders coming through the region, homesteads, towns, and oasis towers were stripped of their resources. Often these displaced communities simply disappeared, but a number individuals overcame the odds and joined with polar forces to fight against the invaders.

The lives lost and the bitterness of being subjugated by Earth left a mark on the people of the region, and while Port Arthur has repeatedly proven itself to the NuCoal population there is still some underlying resentment held by a significant minority within the city-states and townships.Sample

rECONSTrUCTION & NEW BEgINNINgS

The Barrington Basin and Westridge settlements were left in an unusual situation during the post war cycles. Unlike their polar cousins, the infrastructure of these communities were relatively untouched. Surrendering quickly to the CEF forces meant that very little fighting occurred within the city-states, and most homesteads that capitulated were left intact. After a few towns harbored rebels and were burnt to the ground by the invaders, most Badlanders realized that there was very little they could do openly against such overwhelming odds. Most of the aid that went to assisting Terra Novan forces from that point onward was done through intermediaries to avoid retaliation. When these intermediaries were discovered, the CEF engaged in a systematic terror campaign. Forces would enter into towns and strip it of useful resources before moving onto the next town. Badlanders in these targeted communities struggled to maintain even a meager existence. The sudden depression left very little for guerrillas operating in the region.

After these initial tragedies most population centers avoided any direct conflict, but towards the end of the war a number of engagements did occur near key oasis towers such as Fort Manassas, Terrence Crossing, and Gable Roads. Fort Manassas, an oasis tower near Wounded Knee, was hit particularly hard, with fighting between the polar forces and invaders leaving the walls breached and the population caught in the crossfire. After five days of fighting, the town of four thousand was reduced a mere three hundred. After the war, the small population struggled to maintain the oasis tower, but in TN1921, the community abandoned the facility to the desert. Two decades later, Fort Manassas was reoccupied as a part of the NuCoal subsidies program, but the oasis tower has never reached the full four thousand it had prior to the War of the Alliance.

Another community that suffered during the war was Terrence Crossing, a township south of West Base that was the site of the joint Terra Novan army’s bivouac. In TN1917, supplying the mass of Terra Novans left the city stripped bare and unable to survive. Most of Terrence Crossing’s seven thousand citizens ended up as refugees in the West Base after the war, begging for aid from the stranded CEF officers. After the war, Terrence Crossings was repopulated, and currently is considered one of the fastest growing towns in the Port Arthur Defense Zone.

Finally Gable Roads, a modest sized oasis tower with a population of thirty-five hundred located just off the Gamma Maglev line, was the scene of a vicious battle between a Northern Guard unit and the Death Watch nearly a half a cycle after the CEF’s formal surrender. Formed from fanatic remnants of the CEF, the Death Watch Company had terrorized border towns and Badland settlements. After being hunted for seasons, the CEF unit was tracked to the small town and brought to battle. The Death Watch engaged and annihilated the Northern Guard’s 74th Nova Redrider Gear Regiment’s Alpha Company in a running battle that destroyed large sections of the maglev rail station and critical fuel pipelines. After Alpha company was destroyed, the Deathwatch eventually met destruction at the hands of late arriving Northern reinforcements. The damage wrought on the town caused it to suffer for over a cycle before being restored by Terra Nova Transrail. The town boomed briefly in the post war years, but had returned to pre-war levels within a decade.

As a result of their passive resistance and early conquest, the region was able to recover within a few cycles. The quick turn around of the Barrington Basin and Westridge settlements put them in a unique position of being able to aid in the reconstruction of the polar leagues. Raw construction materials, heavy equipment, and oil was in heavy demand from both north and south. The Southern Republic in particular relies on oil supplies from Lance Point to this day.
