Principal’s Report Farewell to Charmayne Charmayne has asked me to send a letter of farewell to you and it is attached to the newsletter. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Charmayne Lane for her leadership of the college over the last four years. In the classroom Students and teachers have been preparing for NAPLAN testing over the last week. You may have seen items in the media about how teachers “teach to the NAPLAN test”. The reality is that the NAPLAN is just one of the ways we find out more about what we need to teach each student. The NAPLAN preparation is focused on supporting students to work under test conditions. In the week before NAPLAN, most schools do practice runs of the timed tests. Teachers also support students to read questions carefully, look for key words, take their time and check their answers at the end. Across the college, we work hard with each child on their individual learning and social needs throughout each year and NAPLAN is important, but it is just one part of the work we do together. Cross Country A cold and wet day was forecast, and overnight it became clear that the event would need to be postponed. Our backup day is next Friday the 18 th of May. Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered to help today please get in touch with Lynda or one of the teachers if you can make it next Friday. School Gardens Update At Violet Town we have Jack and Tarni’s mum Catherine leading the garden work each Tuesday lunchtime. At Strathbogie we have our Kitchen Garden team of Suzie and Hayley (and more sorry if I have left you out!) doing literacy and numeracy with the Kitchen Garden. I see at Swanpool we will have some strawberries and at Baddaginnie there is great potential. Volunteers are the people who make these gardens happen, so if you have any spare time to visit the gardens at your campus get in touch! This weekend! The market is on at Violet Town tomorrow and of course Mother’s Day is on Sunday. Make sure you do something nice for your mum on Sunday! It has been another busy week, with cold winds, wet days and a cross country to run. On top of that, some special, secret work has been undertaken… to all of the mums, aunts, grandmas, and other special women in our lives we say an extra big THANK YOU for making us feel special, safe and loved. Happy Mother’s Day for Sunday. Mother’s Day Raffle With so many great donations it was a task and a half for Cathryn Renkin and Jenni Pearce to decide on how best split things up. There were 6 lucky names drawn on Wednesday morning, with the first prize including a magnificent bunch of flowers! How there could be a mix of bulbs and roses and many between at this time of the year is beyond thinking. Thank you to everyone who was able to support this combined campus fundraiser from donations to ticket sales (and purchases). All up, more than $160 was raised. Walk Safely To School Day Next Friday is Walk Safely to School Day however, given our bus travellers, this is not always possible. We will be making our way around Baddaginnie as a combined group, reminding ourselves of the road rules that keep us safe as pedestrians. Junior Class Miss Fitz. was away from Wednesday but the juniors completed many tasks with many teachers – such flexibility and co-operative learning was much appreciated. Ms Holleran had a great time reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears on Wednesday morning AND making paper plate masks. Some Ninja bears were spotted in and around the staff room and classrooms. Senior Class We have had another busy week with a run through of some practice NAPLAN test conditions. Our normal classroom work prepares us for the content that may be covered but actually understanding and preparing for some less familiar work conditions is important too. We have had some fun learning correct punctuation for conversation with a variety of silly sounding but educational video. Working in small groups we applied this to some tasks to “fill in” the punctuation before entering “Speech Mark Wars”. Each writer in a pair had their own coloured pencil to help show correct line and punctuation use. Some very amusing conversations made it onto paper as the battles raged. Homework: 15 minutes of reading for at least 5 nights a week, nightly spelling practice, weekly spelling task. Here’s to a great weekend, Kate.

This week at school we have continued our look at Fairy Tales and on Monday the Senior Class paired up with the Junior Class to create profile pics of selected fairy tale characters. One of the great advantages of our unique school setting is the opportunities we have for cross-age work between our classes. It is beneficial for the younger students to observe the work habits of older students in a classroom, while assisting the younger students can often consolidate learning for the older students. The students all worked harmoniously in the Senior Room, producing some great illustrations.

Next week is the NAPLAN assessment. Despite the beat up in the media and the nay saying of various individuals, most students handle NAPLAN with ease and acceptance. For many students it is merely just ’something else they have to do’ and it appears our students on the hill have this attitude. The Senior Room has been running through some practice tests in preparation for the assessments next week and have been handling it with great calmness and confidence. Year 4 and 6 students have also been joining in and everyone has been demonstrating great strategies in approaching the test. We are confident it will all be a smooth run next week.

With the colder, and hopefully wetter, weather now upon us, it has been suggested to students they may like to have a spare pair of socks in their schoolbag. Just in case their socks get all wet, they may want something dry to change into.

Until next week, take care

Monique, Amy, Suzie and Barb.

Gentle reminders

At 9.00 we do Independent Reading each day. Please have the children at school on time so the kids

can maximise their reading time.

Please send a message on Class Dojo or call the school if your child is going to be absent.

On Tuesday we had a great time decorating (and eating) Gingerbread Men. Then on Wednesday,

the famous Mrs B. came for the day while I attended a course on learning difficulties. She reported a

great day of learning and fun was had by all and she was glad to go home at the end of the day for a

well-earned rest.

Today we had a special visitor, Frank, who told us about his time as the famous Australian runner,

Ron Clark’s, coach. The kids asked for lots of tips for the Cross Country (if it’s not raining)

At the end of the month our class will be hosting a Pre Service Teacher for 3 weeks. It will be a great

opportunity for him to see how our fantastic school operates and great for the kids to have another

adult helping them learn.

We are grateful for the many helpers we see on a regular basis.

Mondays we look forward to working with Megan, who is doing her Certificate 111 in Education

Support and then Julia, who is doing the same course, joins us on Tuesdays.

Wednesdays we are happy to see Keith’s smiling face and Trish pops in to read with the kids too.

If you would like to volunteer to spend time helping in our classroom we would love to hear from you.

Have a great weekend. See you at the market.

Violet Town Senior Class:

This week, in the land of wonder, magic and good vs evil, otherwise known as the fairytale topic, Mr. Roo has been trying to advertise his fairytale business.

During the last two weeks, the Senior Class linked our fairytale unit with persuasive texts to create Advertisements based on made up fairytale businesses. Firstly, Mr. Roo wrote down a list of the fairytale stories that the students remember. Next, they looked at how an advertisement is a persuasive text and examples of them. Then, they created a fairytale business to advertise.

Dylan created – ‘Roasts’ with Mr. Wolf selling pork roasts with a 50% off special, inspired by The Three

Little Pigs

Kane created – ‘Egg and Bacon Burgers’ advertising a new meal deal with egg and bacon burgers, inspired

by The Little Red Hen

Elliette created – ‘Aladdin’s Lamps’ which has a 50% off/ Buy One Get One Free deal, inspired by the story

of Aladdin

Bronti created – ‘Rumpelstiltskin’s Gold Refinery’ telling people about the brand new business, inspired by

Rumpelstiltskin

Ruby J created – ‘Hansel and Gretel’s Sweet House and Bakery’ letting customers know about a deal to Buy

5 loaves of bread and get the 6th FREE, inspired by Hansel and Gretel

Alice created – ‘ The Gingerbread Man’s Bakery’ which is now making wedding cakes with gingerbread man

toppers, inspired by The Gingerbread Man

Mr. Roo created – ‘Cinderella’s Cleaning Service’ with a 20% off 1st clean special, inspired by Cinderella

Fingers crossed that some of these businesses do well in their advertising campaigns!

Health and PE: Week 3

Today is the day!!! ….the long awaited Cross Country of 2018. As I write this, I am not even sure if it will go

ahead? Let’s see if the ‘Weather Gods’ have been on our side and the rain holds off, even if it is until 12noon.

Okay, well that was a bit of a false start as I was planning the newsletter write up for this week. The overnight rain, showers and very chilly weather were major contributors in cancelling our Cross Country event.

The Cross Country is rescheduled for next FRIDAY 18TH MAY.

We will have one more week to prepare ourselves for running the 2km and 3km distance. Thank you to the teachers that have been making sure that the kids get a few extra training sessions in and keep up the great efforts kids, you will do even better now with a few extra trainings under your belt! The plans will remain the same with the first race starting at 11am and the other 5 races to follow at intervals. The Cross Country should be all finished and back at school by midday. Order of races in age groups will be as follows:

5-8 boys, 5-8 girls, 9 boys, 9 girls, 10 boys, 10 girls, 11/12 boys 11/2 girls

The past few weeks the students at Violet Town have had the assistance of Robbie Rae coming in to help the students practice for the Cross Country. Through Robbie’s local connections, the Violet Town campus were privileged to have 92 year old Frank McMahon to come in and speak to the students and inspire them to do their best effort in the Cross Country. Frank had many amazing stories, as well as being an English and French teacher, he was also famously known as running coach for the late ‘Ron Clarke.’ Under Frank’s coaching and guidance, he witnessed Ron set many track records, in which he went on to claim 17 World Records in middle distance running and competed all over the world. To this day, Ron Clarke still is an inspiration to many athletes and Frank fondly remembered and shared his stories.

See you all next week… Bring on the Cross Country!

Lynda Weeks H/PE Teacher

Pictured to the left is Frank McMahon leaving the kids with some advice about aerobic training in preparation for a middle distance running event and said….

‘it’s just like fast jogging, make sure you pace yourself and leave enough fuel in the tank for a great finish!’

A Message from Charmayne

Dear families and friends,

As you may remember, I am due to return to Peranbin at the end of this term. I’m writing with a mixture of sadness and optimism to let you know that my return to our beloved school will not be possible.

As much as I have loved working with you, our wonderful teachers and most especially, your children, it has become clear that the needs of my family can no longer co-exist with the long hours and significant demands of the principalship.

When I came to Peranbin at the beginning of 2014, it was with joy and excitement. I loved being back in the country after 10 years in the city and I loved working in a school where my own children had been happy students decades earlier! I relished the chance to make positive changes.

Uppermost on my long list of ambitions for the college was the enrichment of the children’s educational experience. I wanted our school to be a place where all the kids were happy and safe but also inspired, engaged, stimulated by learning.

I wanted our school to be a strong part of its four communities and to include those communities in the children’s learning. I wanted the kids to have a real sense of belonging, not only to their campuses and their communities but to the whole college as well.

I hope our hard work over the last 4 years has brought Peranbin closer to those goals.

Reading the newsletters during my leave of absence, I have been confident that Angela is building on the work that we have done over the last 4 years and is adding further layers of improvement. I can see that I am leaving our wonderful school community in good hands!

For me the highlights have been many: The friends I have made, the laughs we have had at working bees and School Council meetings, the hugs the children run to give me, the artwork and letters from them which I treasure, the marvellous conversations I have had with them; the special days like our Japanese Festivals, our Student Writers’ Festivals, our wicking bed making and gorgeous cross countries at Strathbogie, our Arboretum planting days and community garden creation at Violet Town, the CFA projects and parties at Baddaginnie and the extravagant concerts and Winter Sports days at Swanpool!

There is a lot to miss. But there is a lot to look forward to. You have your time with Miss Holleran to enjoy. I have my work with Monash where I run courses for Victorian and international school leaders. This work is stimulating but much more manageable, in my situation, than full time leadership of a complex school like Peranbin.

Thank you for your friendship and support. I have loved (nearly) every minute of my time at Peranbin and feel very grateful for it. I’m sure I’ll see many of you around. I might even see you at a whole college day soon, as I would love to say goodbye, in person, to the children.

Lots of love to you all,

Charmayne
