Principal’s Report An eventful week!
This week has been busy and eventful on all counts.
Teacher learning
On Monday Amy Foy and I were in Melbourne at a new training program for school leaders about Autism. The DET acknowledges that schools across the state can be more effective in supporting autistic students. For us it was a great opportunity to build our knowledge and understanding of how to make adjustments so that all students can achieve. On Wednesday Amy, Miss Pat and I also updated our First Aid qualifications
Cricket Clinic
Monday also saw the Cricket Clinic at Violet Town campus – by all accounts it was an enjoyable and successful day. Check out the report from Ms. Weeks for more!
Literature Writing Day at Eildon Primary School
Strathbogie students are at Eildon as I type this for a writing extravaganza! We will hear more about it over the next week.
Term 4 events
Dates for Term 4 are in the calendar at the back of the newsletter. I have been asked if we are having another week of the swimming this term. Given the large number of other “end of year” events it is not practicable to do them and the swimming program well. As a result swimming lessons will not be running this Term. In 2019 there will be a two week swimming program in Term 1. We do have a fun day at the pool booked for the last Wednesday of the term which all families are welcome to attend.
Enrolments and Transition for 2019
We are taking enrolments now for 2019. Our transition programs for all campuses are in place and all dates have been provided to the relevant kinders. If you would like more information you can call the office at your nearest campus.
Enjoy your weekend – I shall be mowing the lawns!

Another week has flown by with the Cricket Clinic on Monday being a popular way to start things. Some of the feedback from our kids on the day included, co-operation so more people could have fun as well as people trying new things. That’s what learning is all about! This was also apparent during our CPR training on Wednesday – see some photos on the next page of these activities. Head lice A head lice check was conducted on Wednesday and notes of outcomes were sent home. We have the all clear but please keep on checking at least once a week as it can become a major problem super fast. Bus Driver Changes continue next week Jeff Arnold (who has met the kids and staff) will be driving all of next week in Pauline’s absence. Please contact Kate or Dianne on these days if there are any changes to the bus travel arrangements for your family.
Bunnings Wangaratta and Student Working Bee Next Wednesday afternoon we will be working away at Swanpool to plant and add colour to our campus based on the wish lists we developed last term. There will be some busy hands as we continue to work together to make the grounds at both campuses look as good as we can.
Have a great weekend, Dianne, Pauline, Princess Robbie, Barb and Kate

A Grey Wolf Walks Amongst Us
This week we received a letter from Scouts Victoria acknowledging the
achievements of one of our own, Arthur Gerrans. Arthur recently received the Grey
Wolf award. This is a substantial milestone and the work Arthur undertook to earn this in Scouts is no surprise to
us. As a campus captain, Arthur demonstrates great
effort, leadership and teamwork at school.
Well done Arthur!

Junior Classroom The week started off with our trip to Violet Town for the Cricket Clinic. The cricket coaches were very impressive keeping the Junior group busy learning a range of bat and ball skills The Swanpool/Baddaginnie group were very well behaved and extremely co-operative considering the heat. Thanks to Ms. Weeks for organising this day!
This week we are finishing our Big book – The Life Cycle of a Sunflower. We have planted sunflower seeds at Swanpool Campus, and also Baddaginnie Campus – fingers crossed that they germinate! In Maths this week we have reviewed addition – the younger group have worked on doubles in their Maths fluency, and the older group have worked on adding two, two digit numbers mentally as well as reviewing vertical addition.
We have begun our unit of Integrated Studies. “The Animal Kingdom”- we now know the five main groups of animals – fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. We have sorted mammals into groups according to their characteristics and also according to what continent they are from. We know what makes a mammal, a mammal!
Senior Classroom We have settled back into our routines really well despite some people suffering from upset tummies, sniffles and headaches. Mixed in with our bodies still adjusting to the hour change, it has been a solid fortnight of learning. In Literacy we have been reviewing our holidays, using a new planner to help develop our ideas more clearly through sequencing and paragraphing. Our Maths has included converting units of measure (time – seconds-minutes-hours-days) and length/distance (mm-cm-m-km). This allowed us to focus on our mathematical strategies – what do I know? How can I use this? Is there another way to check my workings? We used a lot of repeat addition thinking, doubles and multiplication. This has made our work in multiplication (in everyday situations) a smooth transition. Homework: nightly spelling, weekly spelling, 15 minutes reading a Just Right Book for 5 out of 7 nights.

It has been another action packed week here at Strathbogie Campus. So many activities and experiences for our students, it has been an awesome week. Monday kicked things off with a trip down to Violet Town Campus for a Cricket Clinic, just in time for summer. The students participated in a range of activities to improve their understanding of the game and to improve their skills. Students rotated through the activities and it was great day for the Strathbogie students to catch up with some of their mates from the other campuses. On Wednesday all the students participated in CPR training with Kate Nichols. The students showed great interest and listened attentively as Kate instructed them on how to assess a person and a situation that may need first aid. The students were able to answer theoretical questions about CPR before participating in practical activities. Our students completed activities as an individual before being able to work with a partner. In their pairs, students learnt how to enact a recovery position on a person who is unconscious but breathing, in order to help keep their airways clear. Kate also taught us what to do if someone is choking and what to do if bitten by a snake. Students consolidated this learning by writing about DRSABCD and what it stands for: D anger R esponse S end A irway B reathing C irculation D efribrillator These are important skills to learn that hopefully our students will never need to use. We must also mention our two sports stars, Kayden and Bianca, who travelled down to Epping last week to compete in the Regional Schools Sports competition. Kayden was running and Bianca was long jumping and triple jumping. Both recorded impressive efforts and we are all so happy for you in this achievement. Next Friday will see the start of our kinder/school transition days so we look forward to welcoming the kinder students to school. It is a short morning session, 9 -10.30am. Next week is the MARC Van so make sure all your books are read and returned! Have a wonderful weekend and next week we’ll have lots of pictures from our trip to Eildon today Amy, Monique, Suzie and Barb.

In Kitchen Garden we have been excited to harvest some of our school grown veggies and cook a few dishes the last couple of weeks. Last week we made spinach and cheese pies with leeks, silverbeet and celery from the wicking beds plus cherry jam tarts with cherries preserved from Bianca's orchard. Some of the Little Bogies Playgroup dropped by to help crack eggs. This week we made green frittata and lemon tarts with eggs and lemons from Carissa's garden. Next Thursday we are excited to welcome environmental educator Karen Retra (karenretra.com) to the school. Karen will be teaching the children about native bees and other pollinators and will have a look at our bee hotel. We will also have a go participating in the wild pollinator count of which Karen is a co-founder. Please feel free to join us at this incursion after recess. Warm regards, Suzie and Hayley

READING by Aley
We read Voices In the Park by Anthony Browne. We drew the characters’ faces were feeling.
We learned that all the people went for a walk in the park and their feelings felt a bit different about their walk in the park.
SPELLING by Jack
In Spelling we did a grid and we sounded out the words. We put a sound in each box.

CRICKET by Logan
On Monday everyone from the other campuses came to Violet Town to learn how to play cricket.
Two guys from Cricket Australia came to show us some activities to help us learn how to hit the ball, how to throw the ball and how to catch one.
MATHS by Parker and Yatra
We are learning how objects move. They can slide, flip and turn. We learned that when a shape slides it does not get bigger or smaller. We made a poster with cardboard and we drew around our hands and then we cut our hands out. We drew an arrow to show which way the hand did a slide.
FIRST AID by Carter and Jason
On Wednesday we learned how to do C.P.R. We learned that you need to push 4 to 5 cms on an adult. We blew in the mouth so it can go to their lungs.
NOUNS by Harry
When we did nouns all the kids got to say names of people, places, animals and objects and the most nouns were people. A proper noun is the name of a person like Dustin Martin, or an animal, like a Husky dog and a town like Violet Town.
ORGANISATION by Abbey and Paula
We had to guess what Dustin Martin, Malcolm Turnbull and Miss Pat all had in common. The answer was they are all super organised. We made a poster and we talked about all the things we need to do to be organised at school and home.

Violet Town Senior Class:
Mr. Roo is getting excited for the warmer weather coming our way, especially the really warm day we had for the Cricket Clinic on Monday. Picture this: the sun is shining, not a cloud in the sky, and roughly 60 kids on the Violet Town Campus oval, completing cricket activities.
Mr. Roo improved his skills in batting, bowling, aiming and throwing at the wickets and running to bases. But he had the most fun at the end of the skills session, where a game was played. This was not a traditional game of cricket, it had four batters running around a square to the next wicket. They had to bat the ball work as a team to run at the same time to the next base. It was basically continuous cricket, because if a batter wasn’t at a base, they could be bowled out. Mr. Roo loved this game, and a chunk of the kids did too!
Next event of the week was the CPR training on Wednesday. Mr. Roo and the students learnt how to potentially save someone’s life using CPR. They all learnt the meaning of DRSABCD, and what to do for each letter. They students worked tirelessly to save their dummy’s life (unfortunately none of the dummies were revived – but if they had been human, they would have!). Maddison found it a little hard having to press onto the dummy’s chest so many times. Marly liked it, because now she feels confident to be able to save someone’s life. Bronti learnt that you have to make sure that before you attempt CPR you have to check to see if the area is safe around you. And even Mr. Roo got in on the action.
In Maths this week, Mr. Roo showed the students how to make a coordinate picture. It’s kind of like a dot to dot, but you have to put the dots on the page before you join them. Students had to follow instructions that were positive and negative numbers along the Cartesian plane. And the results are pretty awesome. Pictures of this will be in next week’s newsletter, as the students are finishing off their pictures as this is being written.
