Suggestions for Lent — conclusion

6. Reflecting on our reading the Bible. The Bible is the

word of God, and its themes are central in the Lenten

Triodion. We are used to the Sunday readings at the Divine

Liturgy, which consist of the Epistle and Gospel. Yet, the

Bible foreshadows Jesus Christ, who is the fulfillment of

the Scriptures. The first chapters of the Book of Genesis is

about creation of the universe, the creation of Adam and

events; the giving of the Law on Mt. Sinai, the 40 year

journey of the Israelites in the desert from Egypt to the

Promised Land, are the framework of our 40 day journey to

Pascha. Through the Old Testament, we experience the

spiritual situation of time before Christ, the time of

repentance and expectation, the time of the history of

salvation moving towards its fulfillment in Christ.

7. Be aware of the Christocentric focus. Lent should be

focused on Jesus Christ Himself. Sometimes we get caught

up in fasting, saying our prayers, giving up certain foods

and pleasures, going to church and attending the Lenten

services; yet in the midst of all we do, we forget about Jesus

Christ Himself! Above all, Lent is a time to draw closer to

and Blood in the Eucharist to unite us with Him. "He who

eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in

him." (Jn 6; 56) Here is the ultimate paradox; During Lent,

we fast, abstain from certain foods, of which all are

perishable, is accompanied by partaking of the imperishable

food-the Body and Blood of Christ. Adam and Eve fell

Away from thier connection to God through eating, and we

are restored and united with God in the highest way

through the Holy Communion of the Body and Blood of

Christ. This is more than Christocentric. We have Christ

dwelling in us in a palpable way.

8. Cultivate human relationships. The hymnody of the

Lenten Triodion not only expresses the Old Testament and

sin, but also emphasizes, mutual forgiveness, and caring for

one another. 'Let us keep a spiritual Fast, let us break up

every hypocrisy…let us forgive the offenses of others, so

that our sins might be also forgiven.' 'Let us delight in the

joy of this time of the Fast. May it shine with purity and

sincere charity, in the splendor of prayer and the abundance

of all virtues…' The Book of Isaiah begins with a

condemnation of the Israel because that had abandoned

God, and then continues with an admonition to the Israelites

to return to God and to be fair and to establish proper

relationships with their fellow human beings. So we are

called to think of any relationships that are not in proper

condition and make every effort to remedy them.

9. Practice almsgiving. St. John Chrysostom reminds

us that we are to give alms, even encouraging the poor to do

so. Fasting helps us to feel compassion towards others. We

not only give money, but also of ourselves. We can give of

ourselves to family, friends, keep a lonely parishioner

company. Do so with love; "God loves a cheerful

giver." (2 Cor 9; 7) "Prayer and fasting are good, but better

than either is almsgiving accompanied by righteousness…It

is better to give alms than to store up gold; for almsgiving

saves everyone from death and expiates every sin. Those

who regularly give alms shall enjoy a full life." (Tobit 12; 8-9)

10. Make this Lent a time for transformation.

Ultimately, our Lenten season is transformative,

challenging us to resolve that at the end of the Lenten

period, when we celebrate Pascha, we are different from

what we are today. The transformative aspect of Lent is an

absolute necessity for spiritually enjoying this season. We

are in the process of transformation if we steadily become

Christocentric in all things, through the grace and power

of our Lord Jesus Christ. This Lenten season provides

us with a tremendous possibility to prepare spiritually, to

be constantly transformed, and to be with Christ in His

Passion and Resurrection.

з читаннями на цей день. Дай собі на це хвилинку часу;

4. Level Up.
