Abels, who transferred from Khayelitsha police sta- tion two weeks ago, says he plans to assess the challen- ges that affect the area, especially Hanover Park which has been plagued with gang violence and shootings in recent weeks. “As a priority I will be looking at the situation in Hanover Park. Section 205 dictates my mandate and that is to ensure safety. It will be a challenge, but we will have a multi-pronged approach in dealing with this issue,” he says. “We cannot allow the minority to keep our communi- ties hostage. Therefore I will be working on creating partnerships in the community. Communication chan- nels have already been established by the previous sta- tion commanders and we plan to further build on that.” He adds that his multi-pronged approach will in- clude focusing on the root causes of crime in the area and this will be done through joint operations. “We will be targeting those who are responsible. We have been working closely with law enforcement. We already started with these operations during my first week at the station. However, this will be a long and difficult process,” Abels adds. He says residents in Hanover Park should report crimes in their area and not fear gangs. “Although previous station commanders have worked with the community to obtain information re- lating to crime, there is still room for improvement. People should get involved instead of saying they do not want anything to do with crime-related issues.” Abels confirms Hanover Park is the “hub of fire- arms”. “This community is known for the prolifera- tion of firearms and we are definitely going to focus on that. Guns are moving through our communities but thankfully our linkages are advanced and through ballistic testing we can link where firearms were used in criminal activities.” According to Abels the police are focusing on the five gangs that are known in the area and they will “closely monitor all gang-related activity”. “We cannot just focus on the bigger and known gangs. We will focus on all of them because the moment you take your eyes off the ‘smaller’ gangs, that’s when they take the gap. “Our aim is to decrease gang- related activity in the area and I am sure we will do ourselves proud by accomplishing this.” Abels says the police will be tackling the social aspects of crime as well. “Every gangster comes from a home. After we pro- file them we will attempt to engage with parents and find out where is- sues stem from. We are looking at a holistic ap- proach,” he says. this festive season. The City launched its “Festive Season

Preparedness” plan in Athlone on Wednes-day.VariousCity officials, includingmayorPatricia de Lille, greetedmotorists at an im-promptu roadblock.

“The vehicle checkpoint that I participat-ed in this morning was the first of manywhich will be held over the coming monthsto ensure safety on our roads,” saidDeLille.

Did you know that fewer than 1.5% of West-ern Cape residents donate blood?

The Western Province Blood TransfusionService (WPBTS) needs to increase the num-ber of donors by at least 3.5% this festive sea-son just to meet the expected demand.

WPBTS needs a minimum of 2750 donorsby January to meet this goal.

With aid from NXT\ Digital Innovation,WPBTS has launched the #KeepTheBeatGo-ing campaign on Facebook and Twitter. Theorganisation invites South Africans to par-ticipate by submitting short, creative videosand enrolling as blood donors, and then chal-lenging friends to do the same.

“We’re inviting everyone to join in. Youdon’t need to bemusical to submit a clip, andif you’re already registered as a donor, that’sgreat too, as you can still help to raise aware-ness and challenge those around you to enrolas donors in a fun and light-hearted way,”saysMarlize van derMerwe,WPBTS spokes-person.The “beat” videoswill be showcased on the

campaign website, where those in the West-ern Cape can also enrol as donors.“It’s been great working with WPBTS to

produce work that is innovative and excit-ing,” adds Wayne Levine, CEO of NXT\ Digi-tal Innovation.V Visit www.keepthebeatgoing.co.za and followWPBTS on Facebook and Twitter, using the hash tags#KeepTheBeatGoing and #WPBlood to participate.

The City of Cape Town’s health directoratehas decided to keep the doors of theHanoverPark Clinic closed until the end of Januarynext year. The directorate was forced to close the

Clinic on 5 November amid an upsurge ingangviolence in the area. Staffmembershadto be relocated to theNewfields satellite clin-ic on the outskirts of Hanover Park.An assessment will be done at the end of

January to determine the way forward. In the interim, patients can go to New-

fields.Mayoral committee member for health Si-

yabulela Mamkeli says the situation is notideal.“We are looking at ways to address the

space constraints at the satellite clinic to al-low for the basic minimum services to beprovided in an environment conducive toservice delivery. We are investigating theoption of a container and some minor build-ing alterations, but we are still trying to se-cure funding,” Mamkeli says.In addition, staff members will continue

to receive counselling for the psychologicaltrauma that they have endured, while a re-quest has been made to the City’s law en-forcement department to conduct regularpatrols at both the Hanover Park Clinic siteand the Newfields satellite clinic site.“Once again I would like to apologise to

the affected patients for the inconveniencebut ultimately it has to be a case of safetyfirst. Our staff members have been very un-settled by the violence in the area and thathas impacted on their ability to deliver qual-ity services,” adds Mamkeli.

HANOVER PARK

Housing office may moveCHEVON BOOYSEN

@ChevonBooysen

Residents of Hanover Park might soonhave to go to elsewhere if they have is-

sues relating to housing. This comes after shooting flared up in the

area over the past few weeks.Hanover Park residentKashiefaRoss says

she is upset to learn that the housing officemight move.“I heard about it from a friend but I wasn’t

sure if itwas true. But then Iheardmorepeo-ple talking about it and just assumed that itis true,” Ross says.Mayoral committee member for human

settlements Benedicta van Minnen says nofinal decisionhas yet beenmadewith regard

to the office.“Due to the volatility of the area, the City

is considering the temporary relocation ofthe Hanover Park housing office. A key con-sideration is to keep any potential disrup-tion to service delivery to a minimum,” VanMinnen says.“People are already upset over the closure

of the Hanover Park clinic and now moreservices are being closed down due to theshooting in the area. It’s so unfair becausenow people will have to move out of the areaif they want to get services,” Ross says. She says safety is a key concern for resi-

dents who need to make use of services thathave moved out of the area.“At the end of the day people now have to

travel out of the area to get the services they

want. And this is also dangerous becausemostlypeople are afraid to leave theirhomesas shooting goes on in broad daylight. Mov-ing services further away from the commu-nity is going to be a problem,” she adds.Another resident, Grant Isaacs, says he is

also worried about the safety of those whoneed to go out of the area to get access to ser-vices.“It is really sad that the majority of the

community has to suffer due to a minoritytaking over in the community. We can onlyhope that this ceases soon enough so thatour community can get the services that isowed to us,” he says.Van Minnen says: “Any decision will be

communicated to the affected residentswhen required.”

Pool not done, but will openASTRID FEBRUARIE

@FebAstrid

Retreat swimming pool is expected toopen without a roof in the first week of

December. This is according to Belinda Walker,

mayoral committee member for communi-ty services and special projects.People’s Post previously reported that

construction was expected to be completedby the end of November (“Summer splashpromise”, 30 September). This was amidconcerns about continued delays.

The current cost of the project amountsto about R7.4m.

Walker says the City has had to make adifficult decision regarding the comingsummer.

“We do not want this pool not to be availa-ble to the community over summer, but dueto the failure by the contractor to stick tohis construction timelines, the roof for thispool will not be ready in time for the Decem-ber holidays,” Walker says.

As a result, the City has decided to ap-point a contractor to ensure that the poolis safe and ready for use by the beginningof December, although the roof structurewill not be fully completed.

Sub-standard workWalker explains that on inspection of the

main structure, the consulting team notedthat some work completed by the contractorwas below standard.

The engineer issued the contractor withan instruction for repair works to the col-umns before the installation of the roofsheeting could commence. The roof clad-ding is still outstanding as well as some oth-er work that needs to be completed once the

roof cladding is in place.“We have made every attempt to work

with the contractor to complete construc-tion of the pool. However, due to ongoingnon-performance over an extended periodof time, we have decided to terminate thecontract,” she says.

The process to appoint a new contractorto complete the project must follow the nor-mal procurement process and the depart-ment is finalising this appointment.

This will mean that the enclosure will on-ly be completed in the new year.

“The remaining work on the roof willcommence again after the summer holi-days. We feel that this way forward will bestaccommodate the requests from the com-munity for use of the pool over summer, whilst still allowing sufficient time for theCity and its professional team to be satisfiedthat the pool is safe for use,” she says.

Extra costWalker says extra cost was incurred re-

lating to the slow progress of the contractor, but this cost is limited to the consultants ap-pointed to monitor the implementation ofthe health and safety regulations on site asthis appointment is done on a time basis.

“This cost has, however, been minimaland is compensated for by the penalties thatare being levied on the contractor for thelate completion of the works,” she says.

Ward councillor Kevin Southgate says hesupports the City’s initiative to open the fa-cility and is delighted that the pool will beopen for the summer.

“This will be a huge benefit to the commu-nity, especially the children,” Southgatesays.V What are your thoughts? Email us at [email protected].

Out of the ashes of the devastat-ing fires that swept throughTa-

ble Mountain National Park inMarch, an initiative to raise fundsfor hard-working volunteers wasborn.

The largest single wildfire in thehistory of the Table Mountain Na-tional Park razed over 5 100 hec-tares of fynbos and saw the TokaiPlantation exploding into a fire-storm.

But under the smoke-filled sky, accompanied by the clatter of fire-fighting helicopters, bombers andspotter aircraft, 2 000 wildland andurban firefighters from across thecountry worked tirelessly to avertdisaster. These moments havebeen captured in 170 pages, as thebook The Cape Aflame – CapeTown’s Dance with Fire is pub-lished.

The book, which collects the ex-periences of firefighters andvolun-

teers, aims to raise funds for volun-teer wildfire services, the SPCAWildlife and Horse Care units, theHonorary Rangers and the CapePeninsula Fire ProtectionAssocia-tion.

Project manager Kevin Gleesonsays: “Countless spectacular pho-tographs were published in socialand mainstream media. We wit-nessed a groundswell of supportfor the fire fighting efforts byCape-tonians across all socio-economicstrata. Against this background, asmall group of individuals, pas-sionate about photography, cametogether. Each member recog-nised the value of publishing anaccount of the fire that wouldraise money for fire fightingand animal rescue organisa-tions.”

Over 200 images have beendonated by professional andamateur photographers andphoto agencies, with authorMike Golby telling the story be-hind the images.

These stories include, among ex-cellent research, the experiences ofthose who touched by the fires: thefirefighter who could hear thescreams of baboons butwas unableto save them, the firefighter whodid everything he could to save aman’s home and cat but wishes hecould have done more, the honora-ry rangerswho gathered and redis-tributed protea seeds that had beenreleased by the fire butwere at riskof being washed down the moun-tain, and many more.

The team curated over 800 photo-graphs before the final selection of

work by 52 photographers.“In deciding which images were

to be included, the technical quali-ty was obviously an important cri-terion, but as the book developed, images which helped to tell the sto-ry were also selected,” he says.

“Wewanted tomake sure thatweincluded the iconic images of thefire which had that wow factor –photographers called it punctum. We were also able to accommodatecellphone pictures and snap shotsas well by producing collages ofsmaller images.”The primary objective set by the

team was to raise R400 000 for thebeneficiaries, Gleeson says.“A secondary objective that

emerged included a need to raiseawareness about fire, to have a per-manent record of the fires, to ex-plain the roles of the various orga-nisations involved in fighting andmanaging fire, to educate aroundthe need for fire and its impact onour fynbos biome and animals, andto recognise the manner in whichthe Cape Town community cametogether to provide support to ourfirefighters,” he says.V For more info, visit capeaflame.org.

Smile Week is coming up at the Red CrossWar Memorial Children’s hospital from

30 November, and if their previous success-es of corrective facial surgery on childrenare anything to go by, this event will perma-nently change the lives of a special group ofchildren and their families. Most recently the Smile Foundation ran

Smile Week at Tygerberg hospital, the aca-demic hospital in Parow. Between 9 and 13November ward G3 of this hospital becamebusier as 43 little patients with facial de-formitieswere treatedaspart of SmileWeek. Two doctors, Prof Frank Graewe and Dr

Alexander Zühlke, and their plastic and re-constructive surgical teams used two thea-

tres and the staff of ward G3 to make thishappen. The Smile Foundation took care of all the

needs that arose around this group of pa-tients.

Free services eight times a yearThe Smile Foundation, an NGO that was

founded in 2000, has a memorandum witheight academichospitals inSouthAfrica.Al-though they support the hospitals through-out the year, for one week per year their ef-forts at each hospital are concentrated.“We get donors on board, support the chil-

dren with their transport, help source thenecessary equipment for their operationsand offer services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy and psychology forparents and patients so that they are more

relaxed before surgery,” says Moira Gertsz, operations executive director.“There are so many children in the West-

ern Cape needing corrective surgery, and itwill be verygratifying forus to see themhav-ing these much needed operations,” shesays. One in 750 South African children is born

with facial deformities.“We are mindful of the needs of the hospi-

tals, we acknowledge the challenges of eachhospital and the different communities theyserve. We have to balance the donors’ expec-tations. But in the end Smile is all about thekids.“Wedonot charge their families anything.

Those who qualify to be helped are thosewithout medical aid who are patients at thehospital, as well as some patients who are

referred through us,” says Gertsz.According to Doreen Kosi of Adcock In-

gram, who sponsors this week, “SmileWeekis our flagship project. We are guided bySmile and we follow their strategy. We wantto add value.”Cole Basson (5) from Brooklyn was born

with a hole behind his palette. His mother,Megan, says the hole was almost 7cm in di-ameter and had a detrimental effect on hisspeech development. The day after his operation, Cole was eat-

ingyogurt andhadhis face paintedbyvolun-teers who entertained the children in theplay room of ward G3.“What stood out for me was the will and

determination of the mothers. They are thereal heroes in this country. The strength ofmommies are really unique,” says Gertsz.

LOUISA STEYL@LouNotes

Ocean View brother and sister duo R&Care preparing to launch their debut al-

bum at the Simon’s Town Hall on Saturday5 December.

Ricardo and Chevon Simon have bothbeen singing at church from a young age.Chevon is the songwriter, while Ricardohas been drumming since his early teens.

Their late sister always encouragedthem to pursue a musical career outside oftheir church. “She could see the potentialin us,” Ricardo says.

Essentially, their musical journey as aduo had a fairly humble start. Chevonwould write a chorus and take it to Ricardoand the two would flesh the song out to-gether.

Chevon never really considered herselfa songwriter. In fact, she didn’t even knowshe could write songs until a prayer even-ing at her home one night.

“While the others were worshipping,God just downloaded a chorus into myheart.”

She started singing the melody in theback of her mind, until she got to speak toRicardo the next day. Chevon only neededto sing the song twice before Ricardo start-ed adding a drum beat by drumming withhis hands on his lap.

They were both unemployed at the timeand agree that music became their outlet.

“Music always seems to lift your spir-its,” Chevon says.

They were sitting on four or five songsfor about two years before they startedworking on their album, Time after TimeVolume One.

“It was always our dream to perform our

own music,” Chevon points out.Their recording “break” came when Ri-

cardo met keyboardist Tim Hoare after be-ing booked to play a show. Tim owns a re-cording studio.

“He asked me what I did besides playingdrums.” Ricardo told him about his day jobas a driver, but added that he’d love to bea full-time musician. Tim in turn told himabout his studio in Noordhoek and asked

to hear his music.“That’s how it all started.”Two years later, R&C are ready to re-

lease their eight original tracks.Ricardo says he is very grateful to Tim

for allowing them to take their time withthe recording process.

“It was fruitful because we’d go into stu-dio and work on one song until we got itto where we wanted it to be.”

Chevon describes Time after Time Vol-ume One as contemporary with a touch ofRnB, while Ricardo points out that the gos-pel album also has a bit of a jazz flavourfrom his background in the jazz fraternity.

He also points out that the album has aproudly South African sound.

The album features performances byGershwin Scheepers on bass, Lionel Con-stable on lead guitar, Tim on keys, Ricardoon drums, Ben Ulric and Didier Richardson sax, Wesley Jaftha on guitar and EltonNovember also on keys. Chevon and Ricar-do’s baby sister Vonischia was responsiblefor the backing vocals.

Almost all these musicians will be at thelaunch on Saturday 5 December.

“It’s such an honour for me to have analbum out,” Ricardo says, adding: “Youdon’t want to play covers for the rest ofyour life.”

He hopes that R&C will be able to tourthe province with Time after Time VolumeOne, provided they can find financial back-ing.

They also hope to be able to one day em-ploy a manager to help them take their mu-sic to other provinces.

In the meantime, Tim has already askedwhen they’ll be starting with their secondalbum.

“Things are really looking good for us,”Ricardo says.

“I want to push the limits and see howfar we can get with this album and albumsto come.”V R&C will launch Time after Time Volume One atthe Simon’s Town Hall in Main Road on Saturday5 December from 19:30. Tickets cost R30 for adultsor R10 for children under 12 from 084 397 5195 orR50 and R20 for children at the door. The albumwill be on sale at the event at R100.

Brother and sister duo R&C will be launching their debut album next week.

LA unveiling key 2016 modelsAutomakers are debuting key models at

the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show.Updated versions of big sellers like Hyun-

dai’sElantraare there, aswell asnew luxuryvehicles such as theAlfaRomeoGiulia,Mer-cedes-Benz C-Class Coupe and the LandRov-er Evoque Convertible.Automakers are showing off in California

because it’s a hot market. It leads otherstates in new vehicle sales, according to IHSAutomotive, and sales there are expected tohit their highest level in a decade in 2016.Here are some of the hot cars at the 2015

year show:

Kia Sportage(Headed for SA)The Sportage compact SUV gets a totally

new look for 2017 with engine and suspen-sion updates to give it better performanceand greater efficiency than the outgoingmodel. It offers more headroom, legroomand cargo space than the old model, too, be-cause it’s slightly longer and Kia engineersused “clever packaging”.Outside, the Sportage gets a sleeker ap-

pearance with curves, creases and a slopedroofline. The automaker says the interiorhas more soft touch materials for a luxuryfeel.

The SUV also gets automatic braking andlane departure warning for safety. Electron-ic upgrades include a 7” touch screen that’scompatible with Android Auto and AppleCarPlay.

Range Rover Evoque convertible:(Headed for SA)SUV convertibles haven’t had an easy

time of it. Remember the Nissan MuranoCrossCabriolet? Itwas yanked from themar-ket after only four years because of slowsales. But Land Rover is giving it a whirlwith a convertible version of its Evoquecompact SUV. Land Rover says the fabricroof can stow in 18 seconds and fully raisein 21 seconds at speeds of up to 50km/h.There’s also a rollover protection systemthat can deploy two aluminium bars within90 milliseconds in the event of a crash.

Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 Coupe(Headed for SA)Mercedes showed off the Coupe version of

its popular C-Class. The star of their standwas the fire-breathing C63 Coupe featuringflared front and rear wheel arches, a widertrack and larger wheels. The C63 uses the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo

engine rated at 350kW or 375kW (S guise).

The model uses the AMG ride control sus-pension with electronically controlledshock absorbers, AMG dynamic selecttransmissionmodes and features a rear-ax-le limited-slip differential.

Alfa Romeo Giulia(Headed for SA)Fiat Chrysler’s Alfa Romeo brand jumps

into the midsize luxury sedanmarket withthe Giulia with its trademark trianglegrille, hood creases and beefy exhaust. It comes with a Ferrari-derived 2.9-litre,

380kW twin-turbo V6 that takes the carfrom 0 – 100km/h in 3.9 seconds.Alfa says the new rear-drive sedan has

near-perfect front-to-rear weight distribu-tion for crisp handling. Initially it comesonly with a six-speed manual transmis-sion. Production begins for North Americalate in the second quarter.

Fiat 124 Spider(Headed for SA)Fiat gets away from cute, bulbous and ti-

nywith an Italian-designed two-seat sportscar. The low-slung convertible has someclassic looks of its predecessor from nearly50 years ago, but has many updates. The rear-wheel-drive roadster is pow-

ered by Fiat’s venerable 1.4-litre turbo-charged engine that puts out 119kW and250Nm. It comes with six-speed manual orautomatic transmissions.

Mercedes-Benz SLMercedes showed a revised version of its

SL, with a new bonnet, bumper and head-lights. Also adding to the unmistakable newappearance of the SL is the new standard-fitLED Intelligent Light System with head-lamp housings extending far to the outside.Themodel rangenowcomprises theSL400

with the V6 engine uprated to 270kWand 500Nm as well as the SL 500 using a 335kW V8engine. A new 9G-TRONIC nine-speed auto-matic transmission is now standard. Not to be left out are two AMG models –

the SL 63 and SL 65: the V8 develops 430kW,the top-of-the-range V12 model 463kW.

Porsche Cayman GT4 (Clubsport)Porschehas addedanewsports car for rec-

reational and club racing to its fleet: TheCayman GT4 Clubsport celebrated its worldpremiere at the LosAngeles Auto Show. (L.I.F.E) street soccer finals.Over the past three months various pri-

mary schools were exposed to HIV/Aids ed-ucation in the classroom and an inter-gradestreet soccer competition after-school.The event will see seven schools from

Grade 4 to Grade 7 compete for the respec-tive trophies on offer. The venue will be at Oasis Business Park

in Schaapkraal on the same property as theCouncil Waste Drop-off site from 10:00 to16:00 on 2 December.Clifford Martinus, the founder and chair-

person of Oasis’ “Reach for your Dreams”campaign, which operates with its catchphrase “Linking Lives Together”, said theevent coincides with World Aids Day.He confirmed that Anroux Marais, pro-

vincial MEC for cultural affairs and sport, will be attending the eventwhichhas every-one involved excited. Martinus said Oasishas for the last fours been engaged with theHIV/Aids programme with primaryschools seeking to use the power of footballto bring across important information onHIV/Aids.“The interactive games and drills are the

methods used to share vital information aswell as dribbling through beacons (cones)to right or wrong answers to questionsasked by the football coaches and instead ofsitting in a class set-up and listening, weaimtomake sharing informationactive andfun.“This year we have about seven schools

taking part, of which five will be from theGrassy Park surrounding schools, namelyFairview, Buck Road, De Duine, Perivaleand Zeekoevlei, one from Mitchell’s Plain(Heinz Park Primary) and Capricorn Pri-

mary School (in Vrygrond, Muizenberg).”Martinus also explained how the interac-

tive awareness programme works and “toensure this, we do not just host a once offevent, as in many other cases where WorldAids Day is commemorated on 1 Decemberof each year and then life just continues.”He added that Oasis opted to run a pro-

gramme in the build-up to World Aids Dayand that it has proven to be very successfulover the last four years as most of the sameschools continued to work with them andthat Oasis in fact thanked the primaryschools for their ongoing support.Oasis works with all learners fromGrade

4 to Grade 7 between the period of Septem-ber to World Aids Day where the HIV/Aidsawareness and various other sessions withall the learners from each grade and thenthe class is required to select a class teamto represent them in playing against otherclass team from the same grade.“We willthen have the winners of each grade com-peting against the winner of the otherschools to face each other off on the WADfinals. Besides the trophies at stake for allgrades, various spot prizes for individualswill also be on offer.According to Martinus, enough informa-

tion is given to a child tomake informed de-cisions when confronted in life. He saidwhen a child starts with this programme inGrade 4 they will be exposed to the properlife skills information for the duration oftheir primary school career, which meansthat when the child moves to high school, theywould have had somuch time learningthat they should not move in the wrong di-rection.“I’m confident and trust the information

we shared with the learners will eventuallyhelp not only the child, but thewhole familyand then the communityat large,” saidMar-tinus.

By now it’s safe to say that the festive season is well uponus. Christmas decorations are up and most stores areplayingcarols andBoneyMmusic.Butwhile our consum-er-driven society urges us to spend, spend, spend, one hasto wonder if there may not be a more responsible way togive in to the conventional festive madness. One suggestion is to help support your local community

by buying local. By opting to source gifts from local storesand small business owners,we can contribute to the econ-omies in our areas and thereby keep valuable resources“athome”andbuildbetter socio-economic environments. As long as local stores can keep their doors open, the

areas surrounding them are generally well-maintained.When those store owners spend their profits in their com-munities they create a cycle where money is continuallyploughed back into a community.Generally, financially healthy communities experience

less crime and violence, creating better living conditionsfor residents. There are plenty of local Christmas craft markets

across the Cape that offer an easy way to browse throughlocal business owners’ products.Specially made crafts, preserves or even baked goods

makemeaningful gifts, evenmore sowhen theyhavebeenpicked out for a specific person. But ifmarkets aren’t your thing, there are plenty of oth-

er local businesses that need support.Lookout forPeople’s Post’snextChristmasShopper sup-

plement in the coming weeks which will be filled withideas on where to shop. When you choose local options to spoil your loved ones,

you are in turn helping those around you spoil their lovedones.Consumerism is inevitable, but we still have a choice

when it comes to how and where we spend our hard-earned money.

Authorities havebiased gun rulesThe new law regarding legal firearms isunfair. If a car licence application is late, then

besides extra time allowed, it gets issuedwith a small fine. This applies to otherlate applications too. Apparently the newlaw states that it should be done 90 daysbefore expiry. No-one told us this.

I have been a legal firearms ownersince 1978 and was issued the lastlicence for five years in 2009. Unfortuna-tely, the competency certificate datediffered from the firearm’s and I was afew days late in my re-application. I hadproblems contacting the Parow officebecause they only work certain days andhours. When I finally saw them, theforms were issued and I returned it

together with photos and the fee. Now, almost 18 months later I still

await the licence and was told not toeven carry my firearm, let alone use itin self-defence.Strangely enough, a local newspaper

reported that only forthcoming lateapplications will now be harshly punis-hed, as it was tolerated and accepted upuntil now. So what then about thethousands of people like myself?Obviously somebody is misinformed.

Latecomers could have their firearmscancelled, destroyed or re-applied for.Could this be the way to disarm legalholders?

Cape Town not so behindAfter spending a chilly week in Malmo,Sweden on the invitation of a SwedishNGO on an inter-municipal knowledgeexchange partnership, it’s good to beback in the Mother City.Apart from the warmer weather, Cape

Town’s unique spirit of hospitality andnatural beauty is incomparable toanywhere in the world. However, some vital sustainable and

renewable energy game-changing plansrelating to everyday smart living can belearnt from the Swedes.Like the Netherlands, cycling is a way

of life in Sweden, despite inclementweather. Whether you’re a toddler of twoyears or an octogenarian, a daily sea ofcommuting cyclists use the inner-cityroad networks.Malmo City spends much of its budget

(57%) on educating its citizens andespecially its school pupils on theimportance of developing a greeneconomy, implementing practical initia-tives such as the use of non-motorised

transport to reduce carbon emissionsand planting communal vegetablegardens on most available spaces.Recycling, reducing and reusing itswaste is another no-brainer. Like mostfirst-world countries households areencouraged to separate all domesticwaste and appropriate storage facilitiesadjoin residential complexes. Hence, there is no need for landfills.I am pleased to report that the City of

Cape Town is not lagging far behind, and have set in motion its own sustaina-ble and renewable energy resource andsmart living strategies. My Swedishcounterparts were ecstatic about how farthe City of Cape Town had progressed inrespect of its achievements and subse-quent future engagements are planned. The aforesaid information relating to

the City of Cape Town initiatives may befound by visiting www.cityofcape-town.co.za.

Why nottowers anddrones? Why are there no observationtowers built at the highest points inthe Cape’s fire zones, like they doin America, that are manned andhave radio communication systemsinstalled? A cellphone here wouldprobably be just as efficient. Is Nature Conservation short-

staffed or what is the problem? From the highest point of these

towers a large area can be sighted, and the necessary firefighters canbe alerted – not only in risky fireareas, but in the suburbs as well.Towers can be built bordering or

near these areas, and can also beused successfully in combatingcrime in suburban areas, cuttingthe cost of using helicopters andlight aircraft for this purpose. The Mountain Men have had a

lot of success by using this method, but what about the crime in theresidental areas? At night a strong searchlight can

be made use of as well, and alsotake into regard the use of night-vi-sion binoculars.Police vehicles can also be

stationed at these towers, andrespond much quicker to where thecrime is being committed, whileother police vehicles do generalpatrol and attend to less problemat-ic complaints.Drones can be just as effective in

residential and fire risk areas.I have posted my idea on various

farmer groups as well, introducingthe drone model aircraft which cancover a fairly large area, and pickup any untoward activities takingplace. This may seem extreme to some,

but it can offer a solution to bothproblems.

LOUISA STEYL

Agroup of 150 Dance for All (DFA) stu-dents will be showcasing their talent at

their end-of-year concert titled Imibulelo(In Gratitude from Us to You) on Saturday5 December.

“The whole production is such a diverserange of students, from juniors to youngadults,” says Dance for All founder andCEO Philip Boyd.

The students are almost as diverse as therange of styles they’ll be performing, hesays. The show will include dances in bal-let, contemporary, African, flamenco, caba-ret, jazz and hip-hop.

Two performances will be held at Spring-field Convent Centenary Hall in Wynbergat 14:00 and 19:00.

DFA offers free dance training to about1500 students. It has become known for itsstudents being very versatile, a qualityheld in high regard among professionaldancers.

While they are known for presentingquality dance productions, DFA plays animportant role in the community when itcomes to the development of youth.

Most of their students start with theiroutreach programmes in Gugulethu, Nyan-ga, Langa, Khayelitsha and Delft wherethey attend free classes in school class-rooms once or twice a week.

“The outreach programme is really forkids who want to do something for fun. Some of them might be keen to go on, andthat’s why we create the specialised pro-grammes.”

Children audition for spots in the special-ised classes in ballet or contemporarydance. These students are brought by busto DFA’s Athlone dance studio where theytrain in one of three custom-built studios.

DFA also started a bridging programmeabout three years ago for senior studentswho have finished matric. It is open to stu-dents from the greater Cape Town area andsees them train from 09:30 to 16:00 every daywhere they work on a repertoire and some-times perform at corporate events.

The organisation has a close relationshipwith the Cape Academy of PerformingArts, where seven of their students are do-ing a three-year musical theatre course. Two of their students are now dancing in-ternationally. Many of DFA’s dancers havealso gone on to work for Cape Town CityBallet. Over the last 24 years, they’ve pro-duced about 50 dancers who have gone todance all over the world.

Some of DFA’s students are with themfrom the age of six to 21 and besides theirdance training, the children also learn val-uable life skills.

Boyd says being able to watch the stu-dents grow as human beings and developconfidence is wonderful.

“I think the kids feel that they are in asafe space. The children develop self-re-spect, self-worth and start taking owner-ship of their actions. Of course not every-one is going to become a dancer, but youalso need to think about building audiencesfor the future.”

The organisation needs about R5m ayear. They get some funding from a Ger-man organisation, the department of cul-tural affairs, the National Arts Council, pri-vate funds and trusts and occasionally theNational Lottery. They usually have ashortfall of R3m that they need to raisethemselves.

While preparations are in full swing fortheir shows, they still need a little more fi-nancial help to get the production on stage. They’ve launched a Thundafund campaign– visit www.thundafund.com/imibulelo.V Tickets for the shows cost R50 each at the door.Bookings can also be made by emailing Simone [email protected] or Marlene on [email protected]. Magic skips past Crystal PalaceJOSEPH PILLAY

Magic FC romped to its second victoryof the season within four days afterbeating Crystal Palace 2-0 in a Safa

Western Cape Regional ABC MotsepeLeague encounter on the artificial turf at theGreens Sports Complex in Manenberg onSaturday.Magicians coachGerald Stober was elated

after leaving Manenberg on Saturday witha smile as broad as theGrandCanyon, know-ing full well that his side’s maximum haulof six points from the twomatches this week(against Milano United in the week and nowCrystal Palace) may have awakened hisplayers from a slumber and injected a newsense of purpose into their endeavours.

Balanced teamFormer Bafana Bafana player George

Dearnaley is the owner of the second divi-sion side and his outfit was very organisedand disciplined at the back away from homein their match against Palace. Their workethic was excellent, they kept their compo-sure throughout and gave their opponents atough time in all departments.Crystal Palace did produce a fewmoments

of their own. Their striker, GavinHammers,a former Glendene United player, did welltomake space forhimselfwitha fine individ-ual shot early in the second half, but it wasnot good enough to beat the goalkeeper.Although Shalon McGear looked full of

promise for the home side and forced the vis-itors fromPinelands several times to stretch

their defence, he too failed to score, twice –both in the first 45 minutes. After a low-key start, perhaps not surpris-

ing following their exertions in their scintil-lating 1-0 win over Milano United, The Mag-ic flexed their muscles in this importantaway duel to effectively put the game to bed, scoring a goal in each half.Kaylem “Pepza” Mentoor and their cap-

tain Danleigh Borman (son of the legendaryformer professional player Daniel “Dot”Borman) up front were indeed unfortunatenot to score, though Morné Abrahams andCole Solomon both beat Basikele Mdletye ingoal to register their names on the scoresheet. For Scara Matiwane, former Chippa Unit-

ed mentor and Crystal Palace coach, whoseside has accumulated seven points from sixassignments, it is perhaps time for changeand time to pick up the pieces. He should probably adjust to a more con-

ventional playing style rather than attack-ing from both flanks with a more direct ap-proach.Stober will be hoping the two wins under

his belt will encourage and inspire his play-ers to push on and fight like demons in thewake of finding enough dynamite to sparkoff more match-winning results.

SEAN CAMPBELL

Lloyd Stevens continued his return for Ath-lone Athletics with a gritty performance (5.2Inn, 25 BF, 3 Runs, 3 Hits, 2 BB, 1 HBP) tohelp secure an 8-5 victory over Silvertree atSouthfield on Saturday.Although Silvertree out-hit Athlone 7-6,

errors at crucial times hurt them the mostto succumb to Athlone.Athlone’s best hitter for the afternoonwas

Faizel Moosa (2-5, 2 home runs and 3 RBI).Silvertree started with Dayton Williams

(4.1 Inn, 21 BF, 1 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 1 HBP and 4K) who was replaced by Keegan Watson (3.2Inn, 16 BF, 5 H, 3 R, 1 K).Watson (2-5, 1 2B and 2 RBI) and Anrich

Robert (2-4 and 1 RBI) were Silvertree’s besthitters.Stevens was relieved by Alistair Veale

(2 Inn, 12 BF, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB and 1 HBP). CarlMichaels (1.1 Inn, 4BF, 1Hand 4K) tookoverfrom Veale to finish the game.Silvertree were without Dean Jacobs (sus-

pended), JoshRich (suspended),MarvinMa-honey (not available) and Miguel Wilson(not available).Athlone started the game with four play-

ers who represented SA baseball at a juniorlevel in the last three years. Lee Marks(shortstop) and Dylan Daniels (first base)played in the u.18 team in 2013. Lance Gor-don (catcher) toured with the u.15s last yearand Mathew Diedericks (third base) touredwith the u.18 team.
