A SPATE of house break-ins aroundMay-nardville, in Wynberg, has mobilised thecommunity to get tough on crime.

They are fed up with criminals, vagrantsand people loitering around Devonshire,Oak, Cogill, Vriedenhof, Langley, Fleming,Mortimer, Wellington roads.Sector Commander Warrant Officer JohnJacobs called a meeting at the police stationonWednesday 22August to discuss a securityplan for the neighbourhood.Jacobs says there were 10 house break-insin Devonshire, Oak and Cogill roads in onemonth. He suspects there were more whichhaven’t been reported. This month therewere three reportedhousebreak-ins in the ar-ea.Neighbours tell of people knocking at theirdoors, breaking into garages, and climbingon walls and through windows. Problems ofstreet people begging, sleeping and defecat-ing in the streets were also highlighted.The canal that flows down the centre ofOakand Devonshire roads winds through resi-dential gardens and is used by criminals asan entry point to their homes, residents say.A drive around the charming cottage areashows that people are living in fortresses,laced with slash wire, burglar bars, electricand metal fences.At the meeting, a woman, who wishes notto be named, reported that while she was outshopping a few weeks ago, her former hus-band disturbed four men coming out of herhouse in Devonshire Road. The men brokedown the front security gate and door, ran-sacked the house and stole jewellery, compu-ters and valuables. The four men brazenlywalked out of the house, passed her formerhusband and climbed into a parked car. Herformer husband phoned the police immedi-ately to report the robbery.A few weeks before, she woke up to thenews that twomenhad tried to break throughher tenant’s window with a hammer. Shedrove around the area looking for the menand spotted them sitting on a wall.Other residents told stories of washing be-ing stolen, cars broken into and lamps beingstolen from stoeps.Another resident witnessed a cast irondrain pipe being ripped off thewall of a houseby a horse and cart team. Broken glass from

car windows which have been broken into,is a common sight in the area, especiallyalong Wellington Road.Prostitution is also a problem. Motoristspick up the women on the Main Road anddrive into the quiet streets. In the morningcondoms and packets litter the streets anddriveways.Jacobs says: “Most crime takes place whileyou are asleep in your beds.”Residents say they have heard car doorsslamming and soft whistles as the criminalsprowl around the neighbourhood.Jacobs says: “People must take ownershipof their own security, and make sure theirhomes are safe, but the street belongs to thecommunity.”Everyone at themeeting agreed it was time

to form a neighbourhood watch as it hasproved very effective in other areas. They al-so discussed the possibility of creating a CityImprovement District (CID).Jacobs told residents their part ofWynbergis the “polony in the middle. BKM and otherneighbourhood security groups have chasedthe criminals into more vulnerable places,like the area from Maynardville up to Con-stantia Main Road. There are CCTV camerason Claremont Main Road and a camera willsoon be installed in theWynberg CBD, whichcould make things worse.”Jacobs says it is time to do something posi-tive.A resident suggested installing cameras.LeonFortuin, ofLASystems, says althoughan expensive choice, the best system can pro-

vide footage which can be picked up by emailand accessed on a laptop. He has agreed toprovide and install cameras in the area fora two-week trial.Jacobs suggests having a show of force inthe area with a blue light patrol. This will bea combined drive through the Wynberg Im-provement District (WID) with vehicles, po-lice vans and cars to scare off criminals. Headvised residents to share email and cell-phone numbers and keep in touch and tipeach other off about suspicious activities.“When you go for a walk take your cell-phone and report anything suspicious to thepolice or the sector police on 082 378 7747.”If street people are causing a problem, theycan be reported to 0800 872 01. We’re spoilt for news, withtwo Armstrongs dominatingthe headlines.

Neil Armstrong, who withfellowastronautEdwin “Buzz”Aldrin Junior became the firstman to set foot on the moon in1969, has died at age 82.

Neil’s first words on step-ping on the lunar surface,were: “That’s one small stepfor man, one giant leap formankind” – a powerful mes-sage, apt for the 20th century’smost amazingfeat and one that will resonate as testimonyto man’s ability.

The other Armstrong in the news is fallencycling icon Lance whose career has takena gigantic step back as he now faces beingstripped of his seven Tour de France titles.

Without pointing fingers, one wondersjust how many athletes use performance-en-hancing drugs.

The muscle mass on competitors in the re-cent Olympic Games was painful to look at,especially on some of the women athletes. I

ascribed it to disciplined, rig-orous training and high pro-tein intake, while finding ithighly unnatural.

On theassumption thatmost– if not all – athletes use ster-oids, would that not then equalthe playing field, give every-one the same advantage? Tostart with, you’d have to be ex-cellent at your given sport;whether naturally inclined oras a result of years of training.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m notendorsing drug use in any

way, merely considering all the angles.Though no relation to the Armstrongs, but

also getting generous media attention closeto home, is the hippopotamus who abscond-ed from Rondevlei Nature Reserve twoweeks ago. The latest news is that the younghippo, who can naturally lay claim to mass,albeit fat, has been spotted helping himselfto a bit of lawn in Zeekoevlei.

(I nearly ended up editing the above para-graph out when a colleague stepped into myoffice to ask me whether I’d heard that thehippo had drowned – thankfully not true).

I digress...What are the chances of lookingout of your window in suburban Cape Townto see a hippo grazing in your garden?

All very dramatic and exciting, but dis-gusting is the fact that the young hippo es-caped from the reserve with his mother andsibling because the fencing that keeps themsafely enclosed had been stolen.

I’m anti-violence but in this instance wishthe thieves had gotten theirs from the hippofamily.

On a positive note, along with some of ourreaders,People’s Post created its own specialmemories when we took close to 80 of our fe-male readers and colleagues on a women’souting this week.

Two armed holdups in BergvlietTHREEmenheld up aBergvliet couple atgunpoint and ransacked their house.

As the man parked in his Camellia Closedriveway, a silver Hyundai pulled in along-side him. Two armedmen got out and rushedat him on Tuesday at 22:00.They assured the man and his wife they

would not be harmed.The assailants tied the couple up in their

bedroomwith ties and cellphone charger ca-bles.While one robberkeptwatchwith a fire-arm over the couple, his two accomplicessearched the home for valuables.They stole jewellery, a laptop, cellphone,

an ipod and other items.The men were well-dressed, well-spoken

and polite throughout the robbery.They told the couple they would not be

harmed if they cooperated and did not makea noise. They asked for the car keys, thendrove off in their own car.The husband managed to slide off the bed,

and, using his teeth, untied his wife andcalled 10111. The couple was not hurt andtheir cars were not stolen.The police took fingerprints and BKMwill

view camera footage to determine if any ve-hicles followed the resident.The next day a brazen armed robbery took

place in Dreyersdal, Bergvliet at 21:00 whilethe family was sitting in the living room.The son noticed the door to his aunt’s car

was open and went out to close it. Two menarmed with guns and knives frog marchedhim back into the house. The men stole aplasma TV, jewellery and cash from the safe.They fled in the daughter’s silver ChevyCruse, number plate CA 896216.In a separate incident, thieves kicked

down the front door of a Newton Drive,Meadowridge home on Saturday 25 August,reports BKM Watch. When ADT respondedto the house alarm, they found the door wideopen.

Policewason the scenewithin secondsandsearched surrounding properties.Two laptops, a projector and a camera

were stolen.A neighbour reported spotting a silver

Golf 5 standing in the driveway, and a neigh-bour in Barlinka Road says she saw a manwith his face covered walking toward thecar.An alert was put out, but as no number

plate was provided, it was difficult to checkthe camera footage.Neighbours are encouraged to report sus-

picious activities to 0860 002 669.. Kirstenhof police reports that in one

week in August they had a number of suc-

cessful convictions, including three cases ofdrug possession, four cases of theft, as wellas a robbery and a house break-in.

. Diep River police arrested seven drunkdrivers, issued fines of R4 500, arrested twopeople for possession of drugs and two fortheft.The police officers were assisted by the

Metro Police’s SuperintendentRobin Jacobyand his team and a nursing sister who com-piled the blood kits. Over 46 vehicles assistedwith the arrests and crime prevention.

. A suspect linked to a spate of house rob-beries in Kirstenhof has been arrested ontwo counts of house robbery and was con-victed at the Wynberg Regional Court.

Beware baby hippo BilboLUZUKO ZINI

A TWO-year-old hippo has lost its way af-ter trying to return to its pod.

Bilbo, the hippo,managed tomove out fromRondevlei into the Strandfontein Birding Ar-ea and later into Zeekoevlei.

It is believed Bilbo moved out through anopen fence gap. The 300 metre section of fenc-ing was stolen from the False Bay Nature Re-

serve earlier this year. Bilbo was spotted ear-ly Friday morning in Lotus River.

The City Of Cape Town’s biodiversity man-ager, Julia Wood says residents near the vleior Lotus River should not try to capture Bil-bo. “People should not try to approach, chase,throw anything or even shoot the hippo. Awounded hippo can be dangerous and chargeon sight, andmay very well injure or kill youor an innocent bystander,” she says.

Wood says hippos are active at night.

“Hippos usually stay in the water duringthe day and move out to graze at night,” shesays.

Residents in Lotus River and near the vleineed to be cautious because the hippo ismov-ing into residents’ gardens and nearbyroads.”

Wood explains how Bilbo got lost.“A female hippo from Rondevlei that had

recently given birth in the small wetlands inZeekoevlei moved out of the fenced area into

a disused pan of the Strandfontein BirdingArea with her young calf. An older calf wasfollowing the hippo and joined her in thepans,” she says.

The older calf, Bilbo, remained behind inthe Strandfontein Birding Area and did notfollow the mother back into Rondevlei.”

Woods also hopes their plan of trying to getBilbo back home will work.

“Funnels have been built into the fence sothat the animal can move back into Rondev-lei. We hope the hippo can go back intoRondevlei via these funnels. However, be-cause the animal is moving into the nearbysuburbs at night, Reserve management arenow discussing a way forward and perhapsactive capture,” she says.

A fine time, isspring – all that isfresh and new is em-bodied in this time ofyear. Mother Naturehas exchanged herdark, drab mantle ofwinter, in favour of afresh green one. Infact, a multitude of greens, if truth be told.

Before the appearance of the burst of col-ours that are the flowers, everything is green:the young shoots on the deciduous trees, thecreepers and vines push forward into thepromise of grander things to come.

Our local fynbos, with good rains earlier inthe year, transforms the veld into a vibrantblanket of colour. What was a barren, drabcountryside is now a beautiful tapestry ofsuch a variety of hues as to hurt the eye. TheWest Coast, Namaqualand and the SouthernCape are areas to visit to witness this meta-morphosis into a thing of beauty.

Of course, if you have planned things prop-erly and sown seeds earlier in the year inyour garden, you will have this wonderfulspectacle right on your doorstep.

Dotted lineIT ALL comes down to a matter of semanticsfor the three percent of Woolworths staff whohave yet to sign a new contract in whichthey’re required to work flexible hours.

Initial media reports say the firm was cut-ting some 600 jobs.

The retailer has come out denying these re-ports, saying they are not retrenching as thisis “not a formal retrenchment exercise”.

But for the three percent of employees whohave yet to sign on the dotted line, it may verywell come to the option of leaving with a vol-untary severance payment or taking early re-tirement, should they qualify.

Woolworths has explained its position. Thecompany runs a seven-days-a-week opera-tion, 365 days a year.

Already 97 % of Woolworths employees hadstarted working under the new contract.

It requires them to work flexible hours, in-cluding weekends.

By comparison, the old contract requiredstaff to work a fixed shift from Monday to Fri-day, and a half-day on Saturday.

Woolworths COO, Sam Ngumeni, says thecompany will offer staff who opt for the flexi-ble contract a “conversion payment”.

As for those who don’t, does this mean theywill, in fact, be without a job?

At what stage should the government inter-vene to prevent working people from losingtheir jobs in the private sector?

South African companies have used labourlegislation at their disposal to revisit employ-ee contracts. One of these are “operationalcriteria”.

The demands on the retail industry arefuelled by every person who uses these servic-es at odd hours and over weekends.

South African companies could considerbeing more flexible in their own approach tostaff.

Every time consumers frequent malls andstores, someone has to be there to do the work.Consumers may have a better understandingof the dynamics involved when it is their ownworking these inflexible hours.

Now our athletes were of-fered a heap of money for winningmedals. Athletes who formed partof a team had to split the money be-tween that particular team mem-bers. I am not sure if our athleteswill be taxed on their winnings, butif they had decent sponsors itshould make a big difference totheir monthly salary, or so I think.

Winning a gold medal at theGames would certainly attract a lotof interest from would-be sponsorsand could definitely boost the in-come of these athletes. For athletesfrom America, Russia, Britain andother countries there are many ap-pearances and endorsement dealsthat generally follow a gold medalwinner. I sincerely hope this is thecase for our local boys and girls aswell. It is time the government andthose who pull the strings when itcomes to money matters in the de-velopment segment of all sportcodes risk it all by investing in ourathletes. SOME OF Cape Town’s bestmixed martial arts fighters willtake to the cage next week, whenthe second instalment of theCape Fight League takes place inWynberg.

The cage fighting tournamentwas hosted for the first time in Feb-ruary this year and saw over 1 500people witness some of the most ac-tion-packed MMA fights ever host-ed in Cape Town.Gary Barrett, co-founder of the

league, says fans of combat sportcan expect contests of the same in-tensity at the Wynberg MilitaryBase on Saturday 8 September.“They are going to see action-

packed fights, with about 15 fightstaking place, and the Cape FightLeague light heavy title will be onthe line,” says Barrett.“It’s a night of entertainment and

stunning ring girls. There are DJs.There is something for people to seeand to learn about what the sport ofMMA. It’s a great night of entertain-ment.”The title fightwill be contested by

local Chris du Pont, who fights outof the Phoenix Muay Thai andMMA gym in Observatory, andDurban fighter Craig Fourie.While the other top-billed clashes

include another professional lightheavyweight fight between GideonDrotschie and Mark Bristow, andtwo professional ultimate strikefights.Barrett would not be drawn into

predicting a result for the title fight,but said he expected neither fighterto take a back seat in the contest.

“I can predict it’s going to be anexplosive fight with heavy hitting,heavy hands and it should be an ex-plosive contest.”The first event was hosted at the

Bellville Velodrome on Saturday 4February.According to Barrett, he founded

the event because the ever-growinglist of talented MMA fighters inCapeTownwas starved for competi-tion.“A lot of the Cape fighters had to

travel to Johannesburg or Durbanto get fights andwhenyou’re an am-ateur it’s not always that easy topack your bags and pay your wayto go to events,” says Barrett.“There are events happening

around the country. When you’repro you get paid to do this. They pay

for your flight, they pay your ac-commodation and when you’re anamateur that doesn’t happen.”The organisers plan to host

league events four times each yearin the future.Barrett adds that the event has

started to attract fighters from oth-er parts of the country.“We started it to give the guys a

chance to compete at a professionallevel in Cape Town rather than go-ing around the country.”The smaller venue in Wynberg

should make for better seating ar-rangements, closer views of thefights and a more vivid experienceon the night.For more information about the

the second-last and last positions on the tablerespectively, with Tygerberg just above thedrop zone in eighth place. The Bay have nowswapped places with Tygerberg, after theRavensmead-based side suffered a 33-13 de-feat against the Maties.However, Hewetson’s side are still not the

masters of their own fate. False Bay mustface the two University of Stellenboschteams, Victorians and Maties, in their lasttwo encounters.Both games will be played in Stellenbosch

and False Bay need to secure victories inboth to ensure their safety.Tygerberg,who trail FalseBayby only two

points, play Victorians in Stellenbosch andthen host UCT and Villager in Ravensmeadin their last games.The game in hand and slightly easier fix-

tures means Tygerberg still have a strongchance of securing their place in the SuperLeague A.But Hewetson is confident of his team’s

ability towinagainst all odds, especiallynowformer Pumas and Griquas centre BrendellBrandt has returned from a lengthy injurylay-off.Brandt’s involvement at False Bay has

been limited to the role of assistant coach inrecent months, but he started Saturday’sgame and helped his side to victory with atry in the tenth minute.“Brendell had a great game. That is the tal-

ent that he is blessedwith. He had some inju-ries but I think he has overcome that, be-cause he understands the magnitude ofwhere we are,” says Hewetson.False Bay will have over three weeks of

rest before they face Victorians on Friday 21September, while Villager will play SKWalmers and Tygerberg will take on Hamil-tons on Saturday 8 September.Meanwhile, in other results this weekend,

FORMER Santos FC captain Edries Burton be-lieves the club’s relegation from the Premier Soc-cer League has not diminished the reputation ofthe Engen Knockout Challenge.

Burton, now the club’s Chief Operations Officer,spent his entire 17-year professional career at theLansdowne-based team before hanging up his boots tomove to the business side of football in 2007.

Santos, who are also sponsored by Engen, have beenthe host club for the Challenge since its inception in2003 and asCOOBurton is directly involved in runningthe event, of which People’s Post is the media sponsor.

The former centre-back says the number of entriesto this year’s knockout proves that neither Santos northe competition’s reputation have been tarnished.

“Santos is a brand on its own. It is a brand in CapeTown, it is a brand in South Africa and we have playedinAfrica aswell. Santoswill always be a brand, regard-less of which league we are playing in,” says Burton.

“This year we can look at the number of teams thathave entered for the play offs. We are talking about 80– if not more. So it shows the pedigree of the tourna-ment and that everyone wants to participate in theKnockout Challenge.”

The opening rounds of the Knockout kicked off at theStephen Reagan sports complex in Westridge thisweek,with 96 under-17 teams all looking to secure theirpassage to the next round.

Only 16 teams can make it to the tournament final

next month to fight for the Challenge crown and walkaway with up to R10 000 in prize money.

Since the tournament’s inception the standard ofcompetitionand theprofessional organisationhas seenseveral players progress to the professional ranks ofSouth African and European football.

Daylon Claasen, who plies his trade at Belgian sideLierse, and Ajax Amsterdam attacker Thulani Sereroare two high-profile examples.

Although Burton admits the Challenge cannot claimall the credit for producing players of this stature, hebelieves the tournament certainly played an importantpart in their development.

“Everybody wants to acknowledge their tournamentto be the one that’s unearthing the players, but one hasto look at the bigger picture,” says Burton.

“We are all involved in developing players and theEngen Knockout Challenge is just one stepping stonein the growth of the players.”

Santos and several other professional clubs havebenefited from the talent being developed by the EngenKnockout.

Burton believes what the club gives to the people ofCape Town, especially the footballers, is more impor-tant than what it does for professional clubs.

“We always want to ensure we do our bit for the de-velopment of football. I don’t think it is aboutwhat San-tos can get out of the tournament; it is more what San-tos can do for the broader community,” says Burton.

“And if we expose our young players to these tourna-ments and competitions we will reach the benefits ofthem playing at a higher level.”
