OUR PEOPLE ARE OUR COMPETITIVE EDGE

STU ELLIOT | DENVER OFFICE

“Canine Partners changes lives one assistance dog at a time, but it takes a team of caring, devoted people to take a dog from puppyhood to assistance dog. A service dog assists with the tasks of daily living to facilitate its partner’s independence”. Denver’s Chief Estimator, Stu Elliot and his wife Micki began working with Canine Partners four years ago as a Puppy Raiser. The Elliots attend weekly training classes with their adopted 8 week old puppy and for the next 18 months work with the staff at Canine Parnters to teach basic commands and manners to the puppy until they are ready for the next step in the journey to full service dog.

KIM WARZYNSKI, JAMES KLINGELSMITH AND JIM ROLAND | PHOENIX OFFICE

WEO employees Kim Warzynski, James Klingelsmith and Jim Roland recently served as “Recycle Ambassadors” at the Waste Management Golf Tournament. Each January, this tournament kicks off at the TPC in Scottsdale, Arizona and our WEO folks volunteer to help patrons dispose of their waste in the proper receptacles, helping to sort the materials into recycling and compost bins.

JEN CHAPLIN | CHICAGO OFFICE

Jen Chaplin has been with W. E. O’Neil since 2005 and is one of strongest and most involved young leaders out of the Chicago office. She has moved up the ranks from Project Engineer to Assistant Superintendent to Project Superintendent and is now Project Manager on the Nordstrom Michigan Avenue Renovation project. Jen co-chairs the Young Leaders Technology Committee and recently, set up a lean processes training session at the University of Chicago William Eckhardt Research Center (WERC) project. The team is currently using a lean construction method called “pull planning” to manage the project delivery. This helps workflow become more reliable and efficient as the waste of waiting, redundancy and over-processing is eliminated. Come summer time, you can find Jen on the softball fields as a member of the O’Sluggers. She owns a condo in the city and has a basset/cocker spaniel puppy named Olive.

PETE SYLVESTER, RICH SIVERTSEN, JASON NEILL AND BRENT FRAZER | PHOENIX OFFICE

The Hobbs, New Mexico Zia Park Hotel project team has been participating in the local bowling league to great results! Rich Sivertsen, Jason Neill and Brent Frazer have been participating as a team since December. Their first match was against the defending champions, and the WEO team rolled their way to a victory behind Rich’s score of 210. Brent led the way the following week to a winning series with a 204 game. Jason is up next for a blow out game.

ROSS SCANLAN | DENVER OFFICE

Ross Scanlan, a Project Engineer for W. E. O’Neil in the Denver office, previously served in the Ohio Army National Guard. During his six year commitment to the Army, he spent a year in Ballad, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While overseas, Ross oversaw a small group of carpenters whose primary mission was to enhance the current infrastructure of the military base at Ballad. The construction activities performed by Ross and his team often varied in magnitude and function, but all helped to make life easier and more enjoyable for the other soldiers on base. Although Ross has since departed from the military to focus on his construction career, he still takes great pride in being able to serve his country and says that the values learned during the experience will be with him always.

BRODY HASKINS | PHOENIX OFFICE

On the evening of January 27th 2014, Assistant Project Manager, Brody Haskins was on a bike ride when he noticed a dog drowning in a canal. It was clear the Pit Bull was panicking and ready to throw in the towel. But without hesitation, Haskins jumped into the cold water and was able to pull the dog to safety. Once on dry land, Brody and the dog (whose name was Mickey) waited under warm blankets provided by the Tempe Fire Department until a relative of the dog’s owner was able to come pick him up. “I believe all dogs are selfless and inherently loyal, kind and obedient. I can only hope that if my dog was to ever be in need of help from a stranger, that someone would do the same,” Brody said.

CERA NORTON | ONTARIO OFFICE

As Cera Norton, Business Development Manager, sprints to the finish line of one of her many marathons you can see the unsurpassed motivation driving her to run faster and faster. She crosses the finish line, looks at her time and smiles with the satisfaction that she’s bettered her personal record. She has pushed herself even harder and knows that there’s still another race in the future where she’ll run faster. Moments later she hears from the crowd “Mommy! Mommy!” She knows the voice of her son, Seth. She looks around and sees Seth standing next to her husband Mark. Both are giving her a “thumbs Up” and cheering for her. The biggest smile grows on her face as she runs over to them and gives Seth a huge hug. “The finish line is the best place to see my wife at her core. She is an amazing wholehearted mother, wife and partner.” - Mark Norton, husband.

DON SWITZER | TUCSON OFFICE

Project Manager, Don Switzer is preparing for his third year of participating in the 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo Bicycling Fundraiser. The event consists of teams riding a mountain bike course continuously for 24 hours. This year’s event will raise money to support Bag It, an organization that supports those with cancer related issues as well as the local community food bank.

CATHERINE RAY | ONTARIO OFFICE

Catherine Ray, Project Manager, is a true advocate of giving back to the industry, the community and in the name of W. E. O’Neil. Catherine volunteers her time to future industry champions by participating in organized mock interview and speed mentoring activities at both UCLA and her Alma mater, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. In November, she participated in a Thanksgiving food basket drive that directly benefitted families of students at LAUSD’s South Park Elementary School where she managed the completion of the new cafeteria building and site improvements. While on this project, Catherine also promoted the Enrich LA program by assisting in the organization of transporting clean soil from South Park Elementary School to Walgrove Elementary School to help them complete their Wildlands project in Mar Vista. CARRIE MAZUR | TUCSON OFFICE

Last December, Project Secretary, Carrie Mazur and her family continued a tradition of helping out at the Arizona Builder’s Alliance Volunteer Day. This event brings members of the local building industry together to help those in need by selecting a charity focused on women and children and providing a makeover of their facility. Over 30 Tucson office employees and family members have helped on this annual project in past years. Carrie’s family served as Santa’s elves, wrapping presents for the residents and decorating cookies.

IAN FITCH | LOS ANGELES OFFICE

While working on the LAUSD South Park Elementary School Cafeteria and Site Improvement Project, Ian Fitch, Project Superintendent, went above and beyond by participating in the school’s career day event, sharing his extensive knowledge of the field of construction with students. From that day on, “Mr. Builder” was regularly recognized and idolized by the students with “Thank you for building our cafeteria!” Ian, along with Project Manager Catherine Ray, also initiated an appreciation lunch for the entire school staff for their cooperation during the project construction. At this appreciation lunch, W. E. O’Neil team members participated in the school’s toy drive, which directly benefitted the local community. It comes as no surprise that Ian has a heart for the future, he’s the everyday Super Man to two Super Boys, Remy and Micah, pictured here at the W. E. O’Neil UCLA Family outing.

JIM ROLAND | PHOENIX OFFICE

Jim Roland, Senior Project Manager, is the proud father of three boys who keep him very busy. Jim volunteers his time coaching his sons’ teams in both little league and soccer, in addition to helping with various fundraising events for each of those teams. He orchestrated a toy drive this past December for one of the neighboring communities. Jim recently celebrated 10 years at WEO, and in that time, many of Jim’s projects with the company have included community-serving facilities that offer places to hone such life skills as improving diet, nutrition, and fitness, in addition to enhancing computer and other learning skills. Jim Roland gives back in both his personal and professional life, and we are proud to call him one of “Our People.”

PETER COTUGNO | LOS ANGELES OFFICE

Peter Cotugno, Project Manager, was recently recognized by Temple Menorah in Redondo Beach for his contributions toward the construction of the preschool’s new Tuvia Playground, which had not been updated in over 20 years. Peter’s efforts encompassed consulting, fundraising and even a little bit of sweat. As the only committee member with ties to the construction industry, Peter leveraged his professional contacts to secure over $100,000 of donated time and skill from a variety of subcontractors. He ensured that the construction was up to code and completed on time. The completely redesigned playground was opened in August 2012 and provides a safer and more enriched learning environment for the congregation’s youngest community members. The synagogue honored Peter and his fellow committee members at their “Eastern Elegance” Gala dinner on January 25th.

Project Award in the Recreation and Athletic Facilities category. Thank you to Peter and the entire project team for great work!
