Vasco da Gama

Born in 1460 in Sines, on the southwest coast of Portugal.

The son of Estevao de Gamo, Estevao served in the 1460's in the military under the Order of Santiago.

Little is known about Vasco de Gama's early life.

Vasco da Gama

Gama's first voyage was on July 8th in 1497. He led a fleet of four ships and a crew of 170 men from Lisbon to India and back.

Most of his voyages were to India and back.

In 1519 Vasco de Gama became a count and he then died on Christmas eve in 1524.

Manuel I

Born in Alcochete, on May 31st, in 1469.

His name is synonymous with a great age of achievements in Portuguese Arts and Politics.

He lead conquistadors to capture many lands.

Manuel I

Manuel was the successor to his cousin John II.

Lead Vasco de Gama on many trips to India around the cape of Africs.

A very religious man, he invested great amounts of Portuguese wealth into sponsoring missionaries to fill the new colonies.

He died in 1521 in Lisbon.

Francisco BaqueroFrancisco Baquero

Became an apprentice shoemaker and opened up a shop after he was married.

He was born in Buenos Aires.

Being dark-skinned he was labled a “mestizo”.

He was known as a master shoemaker, which gave him a good base for him to create a guild.

Francisco BaqueroFrancisco Baquero

Constantly being singled out and mistreated for being a mestizo, he created a guild where mestizo’s like himself could have fair treatment.

He later became an officer in a segregated military unit.

Isabel Moctezuma

Isabel Moctezuma lived from 1509 to 1550 in Mexico.

She was the daughter of Moctezuma II.

She went through multiple arranged marriages before finally ending up with a Spaniard, Ferdinand Cortez.

Isabel Moctezuma

Cortez decieded to take her as a mistress after she was widowed by her most recent arranged marriage and she became pregnant soon after.

Eventually Isabel Moctezuma died in 1550.

Hernando de Valencia

In the 1600’s, Hernando de Valencia was a treasury worker in Madrid, Spain that worked as a promoter of taxes due to the failing economy of Spain

In 1629, after he had failed to secure a position in the kings court, He considered the assignment of extorting revenues from wealthy Spaniards through a package of hastily formed expedients.

Hernando de Valencia

He had a history for service in the Spanish police department.

He was eventually declared a fugitive after being charged with having an affair with the wife of his distant relative and was warranted for arrest. This was caused by trouble whilst working with the Viceroy.

Enrico Martinez

Enrico Martines was born in Hamburg In 1557.

His family was originally German and migrated to Seville because of the many opportunities in the blooming city.

Eventually he became a printer and moved from Seville to Veracruz, Mexico.

Many printing restrictions were imposed on him by the inquisition.

Enrico Martinez

Gained a reputation as a scientist through experience and study, he wrote a book in 1606 which detailed information about cosmology, crops, medicine and technology.

He tried to fit in to the colonial lifestyle to no avail.

The start of his end came when he was jailed for sabotage.

He died in 1632 at the age of 75.
