Time of Confession Invitation to Confession Prayer of Confession

Gracious God, we confess that we see Christmas more as a Holiday than a Holy day. Forgive us when our lives are inconsistent with our celebrations. Forgive us, O Lord, for claiming to love you, then ignoring the needs of your children; for calling you our Parent, then denying our kinship with others of the human family; for singing the hymns of grace, and not being gracious with others, for making the claims of faith and not keeping faith with one another. Forgive us, too, O Lord, when we seek justice and mercy without your wisdom and strength. On this Third Sunday of Advent, restore us to you, O Lord, and to one another. Lord, hear our confession and those we offer in the silence, ….. (a silence is kept) Amen.

Assurance of ForgivenessLeader: Friends, believe the good news of God’s grace. People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

*Response to Forgiveness: Advent Gloria Besançon arranged by Richard ShephardGlory to God in highest Heav’n, peace to all your people given, Almighty God, your grace abounding, we give you glory,

our praise resounding; we worship you, and sing today, Christ, our Hope, is on the way.

Lighting of the Advent CandleLeader: And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.” Children: People, look East. The time is near. Leader: Watch and wait for the coming of Christ.People: Love, the Star, is on the way.

Dear Congregation,

As we gather for this third Sunday of Advent, Christmas Eve is quickly approaching. Since Christmas Eve is on a Sunday this year, it offers some challenges and changes to our usual Christmas Eve schedule. On Sunday morning of Christmas Eve, we will have one morning service at 10:30 AM. This will be a service that combines the Fourth Sunday of Advent with Christmas Eve and will be our family and children’s service. Later that day, we will hold a 7 PM Candlelight Christmas Eve Service, and an 11 PM Candlelight and Communion Christmas Eve Service. At 1 PM Christmas Eve, KOCO will offer a full hour broadcast of our Christmas at Westminster program. Westminster will be humming all day long!

Looking ahead into 2018, I want to invite you to join us for the first Kirbas Institute Dinner program, to be held at the Oklahoma History Center on Thursday, January 25. The evening will begin with a 6 PM reception with hors-d’oeuvres, a full dinner, and a presentation from CNN journalist John Sutter, who has received two Emmy nominations for his

environmental series “2 Degrees”. His talk title is interesting: “Forget Al Gore. The Five Things You Really Need to Know about Climate Change”. For more information and tickets to the event, please visit www.kirbasinstitute.org.

Please also be reminded that a deadline is approaching for registration for the September 2018 Acts Tour as we follow the footsteps of the Apostle Paul. You can find the brochure in the Garden Court, and all the information, including the registration process, is on our website.

Let us now proceed into the Third Sunday of Advent, and we will lift up the verse of People, Look East that states that “Love, the Star, is on the way.” Let’s see how the image of a star reveals the promise of the Christ Child, and see how it reveals a real challenge to us as His followers today.

In God’s Love,

Dr. Paul J. KirbasPastor/Head of Staff

A Note From Rev. Dr. Paul J. Kirbas

STEWARDSHIP 2017As we enter the last quarter of 2017, please note the remaining amount needed to make our goal for the 2017 Annual Stewardship Campaign is $236,748. As construction begins on our 2020 Capital Campaign, it presents the need to make large disbursements of funds to pay for the renovations. We thank everyone who pledged and supported the 2020 capital campaign. In order to stay on schedule, if you are able to do so, please prayerfully consider making your commitment earlier. Our thanks to everyone who has made, and can make, this possible!

STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN 2018During the weeks ahead, through special mailings, special events, and presentations in worship, you will be invited to offer a pledge of financial support for the work of the church in the year ahead. Be in prayer now as you seek to discern what God is calling you to do. It is an exciting time in the life of our church. Together, let’s imagine what God could do through our giving! As of today, 240 families have turned in their pledge cards for the 2018 Stewardship Campaign totaling $1,342,153.00 . Baskets are at the church entrances and front desk, giving you the opportunity to turn in your 2018 Stewardship Pledge Card.

A NEW PASTOR’S CLASS / STARTING SUNDAY, JANUARY 14THE SANCTIFIED BODY: HOW HOLY LIVING CAN CHANGE US FROM THE INSIDE OUTThroughout history, there has been a constant debate about the relationships of determinism and free will, of DNA and free choice, and of Nature vs. Nurture. Recent discoveries about how our genes work offer startling new insight into the real relationship between our internal DNA and our external lives and experience. In this Pastor’s Class, Dr. Kirbas will share these discoveries, and look at the implications they offer for our lives and our faith. Is it possible to sanctify our bodies as well as our spirits? Join us for The Sanctified Body, beginning Sunday, January 14, at 9:30 AM in the Social Hall.

A WORD ABOUT ADVENTWaiting. That’s the word we celebrate in these weeks we call Advent. Advent is a word that comes from the Latin word “adventus” which means “arrival” so this season is a time we wait for God like our ancestors did. We wait for Immanuel to interrupt our world with the good news of God’s presence here with us, in the everyday chaos of our lives and our world. We wait in hope instead of despair, in peace instead of anxiety, in joy instead of depression, and in love instead of isolation. In these weeks our faith combats all of the negativity that surrounds us by celebrating the journey and not just the destination. Come, Immanuel. We’re waiting.

50 BLESSING BAGSThe Bruton family used the donated hats, gloves, socks, and scarves to make 50 blessing bags for our friends at Exchange Avenue Baptist Church and their ministry to the homeless in our community. This is a perpetual need, so your continued donations are appreciated.
