Form and FunctionIf you’re passionate about photography, the handling of an SLR…the way it feels and responds to your touch is just as important as all of its other features. You want a camera that can be comfortably carried around all day. But it has to be rugged enough to withstand whatever weather you encoun-ter in searching for that perfect shot.

In simple terms, a great camera has that critical balance between form and function. You should not have to compromise between advanced features and the size, balance and weight of your SLR camera. With this in mind, PENTAX is proud to introduce the K-7.

Build Quality

Magnesium alloy body

Stainless steel chasis

Weatherproofing seals

PENTAX has long been known for producing compact SLR bod-ies. With the K-7, we continue that tradition by being one of the smallest in the category. Emphasizing the outstanding build quality of the K-7, PENTAX added several defining features that set this camera apart from other cameras in the same class.

The K-7 build quality starts with a rigid stainless steel chassis, which provides an extremely stable platform for all the compo-nents that make up the camera. The K-7 is armored in a light-weight, yet very durable, protective magnesium alloy shell.

With 77 weather seals in the body and 43 in the optional battery grip, the K-7 is fully moisture, dust and cold resistant. Whether shooting in a hot, humid forest or in freezing temperatures (down to 14 degrees F, -10 degrees C) on a mountain top, the K-7 will continue to perform. Offering the highest level of weather pro-tection in its class, the K-7 is the perfect DSLR body for use in any environment - at home, in the studio, or when traveling where conditions are unpredictable.

Page 5: Pentax K-7 Brochure

ViewfinderBefore you take the perfect shot, you must accurately frame your image. The viewfinder of the K-7 pro-vides a 100% field of view with 0.92X magnification, so what you see in the viewfinder is precisely what you get in your final image. The viewfinder also displays all the important image information: focus point (indicated in red as an overlay), in-focus indicator, focus mode statistics, shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation, level, number of images remaining, ISO, and Shake Reduction status.

To further assist you in accurately framing your image, the K-7 also provides an electronic level indicator, so you know when your shot is perfectly level to the horizon.

Page 6: Pentax K-7 Brochure

Image CaptureSensorThe 14.6 megapixel CMOS sensor in the K-7 is rebuilt from the ground up to accommodate not only high resolution images, but also decreased image noise, fast image capture, and video. The 14.6 megapixel resolution allows very large prints…poster size and larger….while at the same time allowing for cropping flexibility.

Shake ReductionThe PENTAX-developed Shake Reduction system solves one of the oldest photographic problems: blur caused by handheld camera shake. With the K-7, handheld photography is now possible at lower shutter speeds with long telephoto lenses or when shooting in poor lighting conditions.

The PENTAX Shake Reduction system is integrated into the camera body and is effective regardless of the lens used. This means you can use any of the over 25 million PENTAX SLR lenses in exist-ence and capture stabilized, blur-free images.

PENTAX owns over 30 patents for the Shake Reduction system. The free floating, ball bearing mounted unit uses four electromagnets that position the image sensor. Angular velocity sen-sors detect camera movement and relay the precise amount of compensa-tion necessary to ensure blur-free images at the moment of capture.

Using a body-based system allows PENTAX to improve the functionality of the Shake Reduction technology. New to the K-7, the Shake Reduction system will not only compensate for vertical and horizontal movement, but also rotational movement. The natural tendency for most photographers is to rotate the camera body slightly as they depress the shutter release. The rotation compensation assures that even the act of pressing the shut-ter button will not introduce unwanted wobble or blur into your images.

Composition Adjustment New to the K-7 is the Composition Adjustment mode. There are always circumstances where a photographer does not want to or cannot move their tripod or camera support. The Composition Adjustment feature allows the photographer to employ the K-7 Shake Reduction system and Live View to slightly adjust the image composition…..up to 1mm in each direction horizontally and vertically and 1 degree rotationally. This is ideal for tripod shooters who cannot move their tripods, or for macro photo-graphers locked into position on a macro focus rail.

Dust RemovalThe K-7 Dust Removal system features a piezo-ceramic vibration action to the sensor’s low pass filter. Dust flecks in your images are now a thing of the past, along with the annoying and time consuming retouching work.

Dust AlertOccasionally the Dust Removal system may not purge every dust parti-cle. For example, shooting in very humid conditions can cause dust to stubbornly cling to the image sensor more often than in drier climates. For shooting in these humid or otherwise extremely dusty or dirty condi-tions, the PENTAX Dust Alert system will save you from time consuming retouching. This system analyzes the sensor to determine if and where any dust remains after the Dust Removal system is activated. The results are displayed on the LCD screen, showing exactly where any dust remains. The image is reversed allowing you to quickly and easily pinpoint these particles for manual sensor cleaning.

PRIME II The PRIME II (Pentax Real IMage Engine II) image processor takes image processing to the next level. It builds upon the original PRIME engine by adding speed and functions not found in many cameras. PRIME II includes dedicated circuitry to quickly mod-ify images, the ability to process compressed DNG images, and high speed image throughput. Essentially, PRIME II speeds up image capture and processing tasks, and allows the photographer a great deal of flexibility to customize preset capture modes and apply special effects filters during the capture process.

Capture SpeedThe four channel output of the new 14.6 megapixel CMOS

sensor combined with the PRIME II image processing engine allows the K-7 to achieve capture speeds faster than

any previous PENTAX DSLR to date. The K-7’s 5.2 frame-per-second capture rate is ideal for sporting events or any fast action subject.

The top shutter speed of 1/8000 second freezes even the fastest action or gives depth of field control in well lit environ-ments, especially when com-bined with fast, high-quality PENTAX lenses designed to gather larger amounts of light.

Custom White BalanceThe advanced white balance options of the K-7 ensure your images have outstanding color accuracy. Select from a wide

range of pre-set options, including four fluorescent lighting presets, a manual white balance setting, and three adjust-able preset color temperatures.

Additionally, you can fine-tune each preset to balance even the most difficult lighting conditions. All settings can be verified through the digital preview function, and you can even run a manual white balance operation as a post-capture process.

Page 9: Pentax K-7 Brochure

Custom Image ModesThe K-7 Custom Image modes give you superior control of how the PRIME II processor develops images. These modes apply saturation, hue, con-trast, sharpness and key settings to JPEG images, and give a starting point for RAW image development. Choose from seven Custom Image process-ing modes including:

• Bright – Increased saturation, hue, sharpness and contrast. Adds a degree of “punch” to images, increasing their visual appeal right out of the camera.

• Natural – No adjustment to base image parameters. This is perfect for photographers who prefer to use computer editing applications for post capture manipulation.

• Portrait – Decreases contrast and sharpness to give soft, natural skin tones.

• Landscape – Increases saturation, contrast and sharpness, optimiz-ing images of grass, trees, skylines, geographic formations, and other apects of the natural world.

• Vibrant – Maximizes all parameters to give the brightest colors and en-hanced sharpness for the most vivid, eye-popping scenes.

• Muted – Minimizes sharpness and contrast while giving a high key set-ting to produce results emulating retro, faded images.

• Monochrome – Flexible and creative black and white photography, including black and white color filter effects and toning. Monochrome even includes an infrared filter effect for dramatic scenes.

Additionally, each of the Custom Image modes can be further modified, within each preset, to meet your needs. All settings are clearly displayed on the LCD screen with a radar display showing how the settings affect each color.

Page 10: Pentax K-7 Brochure

HD Movie CaptureSometimes a still image simply doesn’t capture the essence of a scene. The K-7’s movie capture mode allows those moments to be preserved with high resolution, widescreen video and stereo sound. Advanced features, such as aperture control, custom image modes, and the entire arsenal of PENTAX lenses give superior creative control over video capture.

Image ControlJust like still images, use aperture to control your movie’s depth-of-field. Whether your vision requires a shallow depth-of-field to emphasize a sub-ject, or deep depth-of-field to bring everything into sharp focus, the K-7 will get the job done. The K-7 has an Auto setting to take full control based on the lighting conditions, or a Fixed setting that allows you to pre-set the aperture for the desired results.

The K-7 automatically adjusts sensitivity to assure proper exposure for the lighting conditions and aperture (in the fixed setting). This allows you to concentrate on your movie’s composition and follow the subject without worrying about the exposure settings. To give additional control during movie capture, the AE Lock button locks the exposure as you pan across a scene that varies in light level.

Explore creative possibilities during movie capture using the K-7’s Custom Image modes. Select from any of the seven pre-set modes, and even fine tune within each preset. Using the K-7’s Custom Image modes dur-ing movie capture makes it possible to optimize your video for portraits or landscapes, or to capture video in muted color, black and white, infrared, or even with a sepia tone for an “old west” look.

In the movie capture mode, white balance can even be adjusted for any lighting con-dition, with a great deal of fine control for even the most complex conditions.

Movie focus can be adjusted prior to capture with a simple press of the AF button on the back of the K-7. Using the camera’s contrast detection AF system, set the focus point anywhere in the image area, or focus manually on a moving subject during video capture.

Recording Options

Movie Shake ReductionCapture smooth and steady movie clips courtesy of the K-7’s Shake Reduction system. Movies are stabilized to compensate for normal hand movements and to give smooth panning shots. Whether you are using a wide angle lens or a medium to long telephoto, the Shake Reduction system compensates for movement to give steady results. Don’t worry about what lens you use, since Movie Shake Reduction works with every PENTAX lens!

ResolutionThe K-7 offers flexibility with three video resolution settings and three adjustable quality settings. Choose from the standard 1280x720 resolu-tion with a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio (equivalent to 720p), 1536x1024 resolution with a 3:2 aspect ratio, or 640x416 resolution with a 3:2 aspect ratio (equivalent to VGA quality), all at full-speed 30 frames per second.

AudioYou can choose to record mono sound with the K-7’s built-in microphone, or stereo sound with the standard 3.5mm stereo microphone input jack. The built-in microphone gives compact convenience for spontaneous movie recording, and the stereo mic port allows flexible, high quality sound using third party microphones.

LensesEnjoy the flexibility of being able to use any PENTAX 35mm lens to record your movies, without having to worry if your lens is image stabilized. The K-7’s body-based Shake Reduction really opens up your creative lens selection, whether wide-angle or telephoto, fixed or zoom, macro or fish-eye. Use the DA 55mm F1.4 to tightly control your depth of field, or use the DA 14mm F2.8 for sweeping wide-angle views. Bring the action closer with the DA 300mm F4, or use the DA 10-17mm Fisheye lens for a truly creative perspective unmatched by most video cameras.

In fact, use any of the 25+ million PENTAX 35mm lenses that we’ve manufactured and sold in the past 50 years!

K-7 shown with optional smc PENTAX DA 16-50mm F2.8 ED/AL (IF) SDM lens and Rode Stereo VideoMic. Each sold separately.

Page 12: Pentax K-7 Brochure

Dynamic Range Adjustment & HDR Image CaptureThe Dynamic Range Adjustment controls how the K-7 captures highlight and shadow detail allowing the photographer to determine the dynamic range of the final image. Photographers may select Highlight Correction and three levels of Shadow Correction to bring out hidden or lost details in even the most contrasty, dynamic lighting.

A dedicated HDR image capture function also addresses the prob-lem of lost shadow and highlight detail by combining separate exposures into a single blended image. HDR capture quickly snaps 3 im-ages, including normal, under (-3 EV), and over (+3 EV) exposures, then blends the best parts of each into a single output image.

Lens Correction The PRIME II image processor works hand-in-hand with PENTAX digital lenses to correct for lens distortion and lateral chromatic aberration. Due to the optical properties of many lenses, aberrations are sometimes unavoid-able in certain lighting conditions, and distortion will vary from lens to lens. The K-7’s lens correction feature au-

tomatically corrects these conditions for any D FA, DA, DA Limited or DA lens.*

*Distortion correction is disabled when using the DA 10-17mm Fisheye lens, since the distortion effect of this lens is intentional.

Image capture settings The powerful PRIME II processor gives you image control typically only found in post capture image processing software. For example, PRIME II allows for pre-capture creative special effects filters, color extraction, and in-camera RAW image processing. You can also cap-ture images in a choice of sRGB or the wide gamut Adobe RGB color spaces depending on your output requirements. The K-7 even supports multiple RAW image formats, including PENTAX’s own PEF RAW for-mat as well as Adobe’s open DNG format, ensuring compatibility with industry-standard image processing applications.

77-segment meteringMore is better. With the K-7, PENTAX is pleased to introduce a new 77-segment metering system. By measuring the total image area in smaller sections, and using advanced processing algorithms to analyze the exposure data, the K-7 quickly and accurately determines the proper exposure settings for even the most complex and dynamic lighting condi-tions. Also available are center weighted and spot metering options for additional creative control.

Exposure ModesExpect the right exposures with a broad selection of image capture expo-sure modes. The K-7 presents multiple options for automatic exposure, including the Sv and TAv mode, which are unique to PENTAX. The Pro-gram Automatic mode offers Hyper Program, allowing you to use the K-7’s e-dials to instantly switch into Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority on-the-fly, without leaving the Program mode selection. The Sensitivity Priority (Sv) mode is designed to automatically select the optimum combination of aperture and shutter speed for a user-selected ISO sensitivity. In the Sv mode simply turn one of the K-7’s e-dials to adjust the ISO. The Shutter Priority (Tv) mode gives the proper aperture with a user selected shut-ter speed, and the Aperture Priority (Av) mode gives the proper shutter speed with a user-selected aper-ture. Another unique exposure mode offered by the K-7 is Shutter & Aperture Priority (TAv), which is designed to automatically select the most appropriate sensitiv-ity for a user-selected shutter speed and aperture combina-tion. Additionally, the K-7 offers Manual Exposure (M), Bulb (B), or a USER setting that memo-rizes preset image capture pa-rameters. Set the exposure modes on the K-7’s locking mode dial, then adjust set-tings via two ergonomi-cally placed e-dials on the front and the back of the camera. Mov-ie Capture mode is also accessed through the K-7’s mode dial.

Exposure and Focusing

Page 14: Pentax K-7 Brochure

FocusThe K-7 features the significantly improved SAFOX VIII+ 11-point autofocus system. SAFOX VIII+ consists of 9 full cross sensors centrally located in the focus frame, and 2 wide angle sensors on the sides to ensure that all the action is properly focused. SAFOX

VIII+ also employs a dedi-cated AF assist lamp for low lighting, as well as a secondary light sensor that optimizes autofocus response for any type/color of light. The focus-

ing algorithms are also improved to provide faster, more responsive autofocus. In auto-matic operation (AUTO) the camera recog-nizes which object is nearest and chooses that object as the main focus point. For more direct control, you may select any of the 11 points individually. You can also limit the autofocus to the center-most autofocus point. The K-7 supports single autofocus, continuous auto-focus, or manual focus.

Shooting OptionsThe durable, high speed shutter unit of the K-7 is rated for 100,000 cycles, and allows shut-ter speeds as fast as 1/8000 second as well as a flash sync speed of 1/180 second. The K-7 also captures automatic exposures up to 30 seconds, and supports Bulb mode for even longer exposures. For high speed action, the K-7 supports up to 5.2 FPS for 40 JPEGS or 15 RAW images. An interval shooting mode can also capture creative time lapse sequences, while a multi exposure mode can overlap up to nine images for extreme creative control.

There are numerous ways that the PENTAX flash accessory system can be integrated. Shown here is just one example.

LensesUnlike film, digital sensors are perfectly flat, requiring a higher level of precision in PENTAX lens design. As a result, PENTAX dig-ital lenses have optimal lens curvature, par-ticularly in the rear-most lens element located just before the sensor. The application of multi-ple lens coatings, such as the PENTAX original smc coating and ghostless coatings, is neces-sary to prevent external and internal reflection and to capture optimal detail even in the most difficult lighting conditions. The effects of chro-matic and spherical aberrations are minimized through the use of high quality ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and aspherical glass elements. All these technologies are combined to create PENTAX lenses that will give the highest level of detail with the high resolution sensors used in PENTAX digital SLR bodies.

FlashPENTAX offers a variety of accessory flash units to meet the lighting needs of photogra-phers. This includes the low power, yet com-pact and lightweight AF200FG flash, to the progressively more advanced and powerful AF360FGZ and AF540FGZ flash units. A spe-cialty dedicated macro flash, the AF160FC, is the ideal accessory for macro photographers, casting flat lighting while minimizing shadows for the closest and smallest of subjects.
