According to ushistory.org, Tradition tells of a chime that changed the world on July 8, 1776, with the Liberty Bell ringing out from the tower of Independence Hall summoning the citizens of Philadelphia to hear the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence by Colonel John Nixon. (Enter)

Used to show anti-slavery during the Civil War. (Enter)

There has been a crack in it since the 1800s, so the last time it was rung was for George Washingtons Birthday.20PAs Flag

PA Symbols Animal- White-Tailed Deer

Bird-Ruffed Grouse

Dog-Great Dane

Fish-Brook Trout

Cookie-Chocolate ChipCookie

Beverage-Milk

Colors-Gold and Blue

Toy-Slinky

(Have students guess which each symbol is. Once a symbol is revealed, explain why each symbol represents PA.)

White-Tailed Deer- They were chosen as our animal in 1959 because of their beauty and power. Since White-Tailed Deer are popular, ten other states have designated the elegant white-tailed deer as an official state symbol: Arkansas, Illinois, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Wisconsin.

Ruffed Grouse- They were chosen in 1931 because they are found in our area and they survive very hard winters that other flocks like quail, turkeys, and pheasants cannot. They are also called Partridges, like in the song The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Great Dane- William Penn, founder of PA who we will look at closer, had a portrait made of him and his Great Danes. Great Danes were used for hunting and working at that time. So in 1965, Great Danes were officially chosen as our state dog.

Brook Trout- They were chosen to represent PAs rich outdoor heritage in 1970. They are native to PA streams and there are a lot in our streams.

Chocolate Chip Cookie- In 1996, a group of fourth graders pleaded to make our states cookie chocolate chip. It was chosen with the help of this group of students and because snack food production is a large industry in PA.

Milk- Milk was chosen as our state beverage in 1982 because we make so much milk here. PA is the fifth largest producer of milk in the United States. A fun fact about milk is that if farmers put it on their crops, deer (our state animal) wont eat the crops.

Gold and Blue- These colors make up our state flag, so they were chosen way back in 1799.

Slinky- The slinky was invented in Pennsylvania in 1943, so in 2001, it was chosen as the states toy.12William PennBenjamin FranklinBetsy RossImportant Pennsylvanians
