Dear Year 12… as you prepare for the HSC exams.

As I sat down to write this edition of Peninsula Press I wondered where the time went. The six

years that I have spent with you have come and are almost gone and so this will be amongst my final correspondence regarding your achievements.

It has been an absolute pleasure to have worked so closely with you and your families on this

journey to Year 12. Over your time here, I have been so impressed to see each and every one

of you work hard to achieve your personal best and mature into fine young adults.

As I said to you at Tuesday night’s Valedictory Dinner, never underestimate the people around

you, especially your parents, family, friends and teachers. They have helped you get to this

point and have ‘cried, laughed and smiled’ with you. Continue to look out for each other. Some

of you had to overcome many challenging times these past 2 years. These challenges - you

will always remember and grow stronger from. If I could wish for anything, it is for you to

develop and maintain a positive purpose for this world!

Year 12 – whatever it is that you decide to do – do it well, do it with vigour, passion and

purpose. Do it whole-heartedly!

And finally, on behalf of all the teachers, (somewhat emotionally)... parents – thank you! For the

support you have shown the teachers and school staff, you have shown me personally, you

have shown Mr Pluck and before him – Ms Ryan (nee Dethick) and Mr Grunseit and Ms

Saunders (for their executive support) and most importantly the trust and faith you have in ourlocal public school.

Year 12 Semester Two (Final) Report

Congratulations to Year 12, who this week became just the third only graduating class to receive

more than 20 Distinguished Achiever Awards.

Year 12 received their school reports as part of their Graduation Documents on Friday 27th

September.

This reporting process allows us to tailor a non-judgemental learning plan specific to the

individual student while assisting them in setting realistic goals for their HSC and life beyondschool in a caring and supportive environment.

Year 12 Graduation Ceremony

At the Graduation Ceremony on Friday 27th September an ex-Barrenjoey graduate (James

Brechney– 2001) joined other special guests, parents and students to celebrate the

achievements of the departing Year 12.

The ceremony topped off a great week with the Valedictory Dinner, Staff V’s Students touch

football game, teacher’s ‘thank-you’ morning tea and Dawn Walk, making it a memorable five

days.

At the Ceremony many Year 12 students received awards in recognition of their fine efforts andachievements throughout their secondary schooling.

The most ‘Distinguished Achiever’ Award

It was with extreme pleasure that I presented the Most Distinguished Achiever Award to:

Isabella (Belle) Turner

This year, the recipient gained the almost perfect and truly outstanding feat of a GPA of 4.9.

As a further claim to this award – this year’s recipient placed 1st in three of her subjects with 4th

being the lowest rank recorded (across them)

Congratulations Belle!

This award is presented to the Year 12 student who display the most

outstanding qualities…. the most assiduous in study, diligent in

application. The calculation of this award has changed over the

years to what we have today, a reflection of the Grade Point Average

that so many students now use as motivation. This award goes to

the Graduating Year 12 student with the highest Grade PointAverage across their ten best units.

The Principal’s Award for Outstanding All Round Performance

The Principal’s Award for Outstanding All-Round Performance went to:

Zoe WhitlockThis award is given to a student who displays an outstanding level of effort

and involvement in all that they do. This student acts as an ambassador

across a number of fields, whether they be academic, sporting, creative,

cultural or through leadership.

The successful recipient of this award brings credit to themselves, their

family and the school and has acted as the greatest of role models to all

those around them. She has a GPA of 4.2, is a Senior Leader in the SRC

and current Australian sailing champion.

Well-done Zoe!

The Principal’s Award for Student Leadership

The Principal’s Award for Student Leadership for 2019 went to:

Heidi Wiseman and Flynn Maynard

At Barrenjoey we pride ourselves on the leadership

model we have created. It encourages students to

become involved in the issues of the day and

empowers them to be ‘part of the solution’.

This Award recognises students who epitomise the

ideal of ‘help thy neighbour’ and use their substantial

leadership skills and abilities to galvanise support from

other students to generate change.

Thank you Heidi and Flynn for the leadership you have provided over the past year.

The Awards for Excellence in Studies

The Award for Excellence in Studies is presented to students who display outstanding levels of

effort, ability, and involvement in all their subjects. Typically these students set very high

standards receiving outstanding academic results across a range of courses.

Each of these students have distinguished themselves with a Grade Point Average of at least

4.1, demonstrating excellent results across all of their courses.

They act as academic ambassadors and examples to us all of what can be achieved with ‘hard

work’, diligence and perseverance. Impressively this year group of 107 students has anincredible 26 being awarded.

The Friends of Barrenjoey Award

We are fortunate that each and every year we have literally hundreds of parents that help us in

some way. This award is presented to parents who have made significant and consistent

contributions to our school at the moment when their youngest child graduates or departs our

school.

Barrenjoey… is what it is today - partly due to the strength of our parents and their ‘community minded’ efforts throughout the years…

For 2019 there were seven inductees; Kate Cramer, Jonathon Cramer, Volker Klemm,

Emma Long, Eddie Wayling, Lisa Wayling and Rowena Wiseman.

These parents generously donated their wisdom, enthusiasm and guidance. They also freely

donated the hardest, yet most common and humanly available of all traits, and perhaps two of

their most ‘precious’ commodities; SUPPORT and TIME.

Their deeds have unknowingly and stealthily promoted Barrenjoey... helping to set us on the upward trajectory that we have today.

Final week of Term 3

This final week of term was exciting for a number of reasons, of course Year 12’s Graduation on

the Friday dominated – but as I mentioned earlier it wasn’t the only thing that happened.

On Thursday Year 12 participated in the traditional Barrenjoey Lighthouse walk to celebrate the

end of secondary schooling and the beginning of life beyond. Held at sunrise it involved Mr

Pluck, Mr Grunseit, Year 12, many staff and parents walking to the Barrenjoey Lighthouse to

see the sun rise while other parents cooked a great breakfast at Palm Beach for when the

walkers returned.

At the Graduation Assembly I addressed Year 12. I asked them to consider Pygmalion.

Pygmalion can be interpreted and summarised in numerous ways but when taken as a self-

fulfilling prophecy where a student’s own expectations will forge their future and they will act in

ways that make their expectation become certain.

As I said to Year 12 “become the person with a ‘mind of your own’ and forge the destiny that

you fulfil with expectations that challenge you for a purposeful future.”

All the best Year 12!

Have a great week everyone and a safe holiday. Study hard Year 12... Ian Bowsher

WARRINGAH ZONE SCHOOL SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Warringah Zone School Surfing Championships was held at

Avalon Beach last Tuesday. With a very small, clean swell turning up it

was a challenging day of surfing for all. Barrenjoey was represented in

all 3 categories: Open Girls, Junior Boys (U15 Years) and Senior Boys

(Over 15 Years). In the Open Girls, Halina Morley placed 3rd and

Hunter Roberts placed 4th, whilst in the Junior Boys Dane Dujic was

2nd, Archie Mandin was 3rd and Ariel Hutchinson placed 4th in a very

close result.

Thanks to all surfers for a wonderful day!!

WELLBEING AT BARRENJOEY – TERM 3

This term, students at Barrenjoey have taken part in activities designed to enhance student

wellbeing.

Year 7 watched a play about cyber safety and bullying called Sticks and Stones by Brainstorm

Productions. This play addresses bullying in schools and provides strategies for anger

management, conflict resolution and breaking the cycle of violence. Students loved the way

the show was engaging and humorous whilst teaching them about interpersonal relationships.

Year 9 and 10 both saw a play, again by Brainstorm Productions called Cheap Thrills which

looks at choices, mental health and the consequences of risk taking and substance abuse.

Year 10 also completed our Emotional Health Workshop led by Liz Whyte. This course was

designed by Liz for our students and this is the third year all of year 10 have completed the

program. It is based on the Accidental Counsellor Workshop and aims to empower our

students to recognise emotional health issues in themselves and their peers then teach them

how to help and support each other. In small groups of 12-15 students, the 2 hour session

was both powerful and educational and all students learnt valuable lessons for now and the

future.

Year 12 were thinking about life and celebrations after HSC at the Red Frogs Safe Schoolies

talk. This highly engaging and informative session was designed to allow students to reflect

on how they can minimise their risks when at Schoolies and overseas in the future. They all

commented that it was a very valuable hour - and they enjoyed the red frogs they got to eat

too!

Year 12 boys also completed the follow up workshop for the Tomorrow Man program. They

discussed masculinity, mental health, and leave year 12 with strengthened resilience, self-

confidence and connectedness to their peer group.

Term 4 continues to be busy in wellbeing. There are programs for each of the year groups and

we have a number of small group programs running with Dylan, our youth worker, including

workshops to reduce anxiety and stress, Rock and Water run with Mr Moylan and support

groups for students who are affected by family separation. If you think your child could benefit

from these programs, please contact Sarah Saunders, Head Teacher of Wellbeing.

All wellbeing programs are paid for as part of your wellbeing contribution for 2019. Thank youfor your prompt payment.

SUSTAINABILITY AT BARRENJOEY

By Ben RitchiePlastic Replacements

The ocean is littered with 150 million tonnes (for some level of

comparison, that is about 100 times the weight of all the busses in

Australia), and with a steady stream of 8 million tonnes being

added each year. So what can you do? Plastic replacements like

beeswax wraps and boomerang bags - almost anything reusable

works, and will generally end up costing you less, especially when

considering that the average household will use about 24 plastic

rolls a year - and a beeswax wrap that is taken care of (not left in

the sun too long and washed with cold water every now and then)

will last around 12 months. Most people in Avalon seem to use

boomerang bags now and you can see the difference in plastic

already so I won’t make you read any more on those . With the

use of things like beeswax wraps we can strangle that stream of

rubbish to a drizzle - even if we can only make a difference inAvalon, it all counts.

Here are some other plastic alternatives
