Now we’re seeing real progress! This is where our students’ confi dence grows, eager to speak more but struggling to fi nd the words in English. Reading and speaking strategies are developing but what they need is regular experience of common vocabulary and structures. Using readers is perfect in this scenario. Learning English is still a pleasure for most (and a struggle for others) so why not throw them a line from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, let them tiptoe through the treetops in ‘The Amazon Rain Forest’ or lead them to a fanciful world in ‘Alice in Wonderland’?

NEW 2011 – PENGUIN READERSMarley and Me

Now students are moving into a very testing phase of language acquisition – ‘the language plateau’! To help them break through this barrier consolidation is the key. Engaging themes help students continue reading each story to the very end. The inquisitive are satisfi ed by unpicking the clues in ‘Murder on the Orient Express’, the macabre seekers can join Shakespeare’s witches in ‘Macbeth’ and the modernists fi nd comfort in learning more about ‘Inventions that Changed the World’.

NEW 2012 – PENGUIN READERSUnbowed The autobiography telling the story of Wangari Maathai’s journey from rural Kenya to the murky waters of Kenyan politics during the oppressive regime of Daniel Arap Moi. There are detailed accounts of how her conservation group (the Green Belt Movement) was born and rose to prominence, and the many times she had to face brutal government repression as she stood up for the environment and human rights. In her life and her musings, the delicate links connecting environment, poverty and human dignity are shown clearly to the reader. The author won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.

NEW 2012 – PENGUIN ACTIVE READINGThe Maltese Falcon Everybody, it seems, is looking for the statue of a bird, and some of them are dying. Who has the bird? Who knows where it is? This is a breakthrough level and imperative students keep working hard to consolidate their studies and push on. Typically students are now making forays into newspapers and articles on the internet on their own, but these experiences can be frustrating so they need the comfort of a riveting read that’s accessible. The structure of a reader now involves the student on many more levels. They can try and catch their breath as they join Jason Bourne in ‘The Bourne Supremacy’, relax by the pool with ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’ as he plots the downfall of his adversary or experience the hilarity with an invitation to ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’.

NEW 2012 – PENGUIN READERSThe Five People You Meet in Heaven

This tells the tale of Eddie, the fairground maintenance man and his story begins on his 83rd birthday, the day he dies. To help him put his lifetime into perspective he is met in heaven by fi ve people from his past, some he knows – some he doesn’t, but they all hold information that will help Eddie make sense of his life and understand what led him to arrive in heaven on the day he did.

This novel was on the New York Times Best Seller List for 95 weeks after it was released. It was also made into a fi lm in 2004 starring Jon Voight.

Well, it’s the top of the climb – as far as we go with graded readers, the last big push to get students ready to move into reading full texts. Here we fi nd more compelling titles, condensed tomes that everyone at some time or other references as read! The opportunity to delve into Dostoyevsky is not to be missed. At this level we off er to transport students from courtland drama in The Chamber to the horrors of Schindler’s List, each in its own way asking moral questions of the reader as well as the characters in the book.

Penguin Readers really do off er something for everyone!

NO COPyINg, SINgLE OR MULTIPLE, OF VIDEO CASSETTES IS PERMITTED.

The law allows for a reader to make a single copy of part of a book for purposes of private study. It does not allow the copying of entire books or the making of multiple copies of extracts.

Under no circumstances may schools photocopy materials for use in self-access centres, unless they have registered with CLA or an associated licensing agency and allow / use photocopying strictly in accordance with their regulations. If a school wishes to have multiple copies of a part of a book in a self-access centre, then it must purchase the necessary number of printed books. There is no formal objection to schools physically cutting printed texts into parts and reassembling them in a way that seems appropriate, providing the books or parts of books are not then resold. It is not, however, a practice we would recommend.

In the case of audio recordings, it is permissible for a school to make a copy of an audio tape, keeping the original as a back-up. Only one copy may exist at any one time. A school may copy diff erent parts of an original audio tape onto several cassettes, providing that no part of the original exists in more than one copy at any one time. Therefore, if a school wishes to have three copies of one part of an audio tape, it must have three originals.

All the information contained in this catalogue is correct at the time of going to press (September 2011) and is subject to change without prior notice.

“what I like most about teaching English is that you never stop learning yourself, both in terms of language competence and teaching skills, which makes you feel young… Moreover, performing so many different roles in the classroom, not only of a communicator, manager, conveyor of information but also of a role-model, surrogate parent etc. I feel I’m needed. In short, for me teaching English is not just a job, it’s a way of living. I wouldn’t trade it for any other profession.”
