Penelope’s intricate line drawings are as enchanting as they are beautiful. Splashed with luminous watercolor, each exquisitely rendered illustration almost floats within their frame. Embodying an effortless, yet vibrant sensibility, Penelope’s playful style has led her to become one of the leading exponents of the international illustration scene.

After a childhood spent traveling around the globe, Penelope returned to Paris to pursue her artistic career. She was admitted to the selective Beaux-Arts School of Paris where she received her diploma in June 2000.

Penelope was first introduced to textile printing when she worked alongside Dominique Picqiuier. She now creates major print and textile and illustration work for many of the world’s cutting edge brands, including, Ann Taylor, Le Bon Marche, Papyrus, Blanc d’lvoire and Victoria’s Secret.

Penelope’s work has also been included in various major publications including Vogue Italy, D-Magazine, Oprah Magazine and InStyle.

Do you listen to music while you paint, and if so what music sparks your creativity? Rarely, I prefer to work without music, my studio is very quiet and I really enjoy it.

How has your artwork developed or changed over the years? I have experimented and developed the change of scale with my mural artwork.

Tell us about your technique. I use a line drawing technique with watercolor layers. I like to try to keep my artwork very simple.

What inspired you to become an illustrator? After working as a textile designer I was offered a job as an art teacher. So I think I fell in love with drawing and illustrating again whilst I was teaching.

Describe your work environment/studio. It’s part of my home, colorful and full of natural light. My work area gets messy very quickly – it becomes full of papers, sketches and research material. However, when I begin a new series of drawings or a new job, everything has to be perfectly cleared and cleaned, otherwise I am totally unable to start anything.

What song would you chose as the soundtrack to your life? Bird songs.

What could we expect to find in your refrigerator if we took a peek right now? Not much, but I am longing for French pastries!

If you were a superhero, what superpowers would you posses? The ability to heal and bring peace!

What is currently playing on your iPod? Helene Grimaud playing Rachmanjnov.

If you won $50 million in the lottery, how would you spend the money? I would keep $10 million and give the rest away.

What is your idea of the perfect weekend? Being by the sea with family, eating fish and crepes on the beach.

Where was your most recent travel destination? Rome.

If you weren’t an illustrator, what alternate career path might you have taken? I would love to be a gardener.

Who are your favorite artists? Henri Matisse, Ellsworth Kelly, Manet and Dan Flavin.

What is your greatest influence? Traveling and reading.

What are you currently working on? Products for a stationery line.

What is the best project you have ever worked on? All of my projects are the best! But I think that my murals are the most spectacular!

What is your mantra in life? Believe & be happy!

Until recently, the international clientele

who flocked to Brazil’s ivo Pitanguy clinic—a picturesque colonial-style

retreat tucked amid a quiet neighborhood in bustling rio de Janeiro—

were the only ones lucky enough to indulge in a deliciously exclusive ritual:

picking up its skincare products to take home. the legendary institute, founded

in 1963 by plastic-surgeon-to-the-stars ivo Pitanguy, has long been known for

its innovative cosmetic procedures and bed-and-breakfast atmosphere. But after

visitors tried its antiaging treatment line, they learned to stockpile every cream

and serum they could get their hands on before catching their return flights.

eventually, like all secrets, this one was too good to keep. Word spread quickly

of these effective products that distilled the knowledge of the clinic’s world-

famous biochemists, nutritionists, surgeons, and aestheticians. now, PreVious,

the line from Beauty by clinica ivo Pitanguy, is available in the United States.

the treatments, packaged in gleaming silver-topped jars of frosted glass,

are color-free and mildly scented with natural plant essences. Formulated to

smooth, contour, and revitalize skin, they’re packed with polypeptides and a

host of botanicals, such as olive-leaf extract, orange-blossom water, ginkgo-biloba

extract, and avocado oil.

having heard about the line from worldly globe-trotting friends, i couldn’t

wait to delve in. i started with the Dermomask, a stack of five small jars containing

a rich moisturizing mask to be used once a week. as directed, i slathered the

entire contents of one pot on my face, waited ten minutes, and then wiped it off

with a damp cloth. the cream was substantial but not heavy, and, best of all, my

skin was so fresh and dewy that i didn’t need makeup.

the next morning i opened the rebalancing Formula and smoothed it over

my clean face. Used to ward off dryness, the high-performance cream also restores

firmness and elasticity. hours passed in my stifling, overheated apartment, and

my skin was still noticeably soft. then i tried the eyecontour lifting Gel. Made

with a caffeine derivative to lessen puffiness and silanol to firm, the lush-but-light

serum is applied around the eyes in a gentle circular motion. For the first few

minutes, i felt a slight tingling, which, according to the directions, meant the gel

was doing its job. and did it ever! My crow’s-feet and lines above my eyelids (a

maddeningly age-betraying area) plumped and tightened for the rest of the day.

there’s also the instant lifting cure, a light citrus-scented cream that firms skin

and restores hydration.

PreVious worked like a charm for me. i am an official devotee and, happily,

don’t have to make the journey to South america in order to get it. although, now

i understand why so many people have said these products are worth the trip.
