As the editor of PW, I am
sometimes interviewed byjournalists working on stories for other publica-
tions about the use of fountain pens intoday’s digital world. They invariablyask whether I worry that the use of traditional writing implements willvanish entirely.
I always tell them about a trend I’vebeen observing for some time now:scads of young people are sharingonline about their newly discoveredlove for fountain pens. Reinhardt Kargl, who has closely followed this trend, writes in this issue (“From Cyberspaceto the Real World”) about how one suchperson’s quest for information led to ablog, a thriving online community, andthen to a brick-and-mortar business.
But one doesn’t have to be aGen X-er or a Millennial to use today’stechnology to reach the world onbehalf of writing instruments. YairGreenberg, the powerhouse behind theYafa brands, has been an innovatorfrom the get-go, and after decades in thebusiness, he continues to bring newideas to fruition. Read about his latestachievements in “I Don’t Take No.”
In this issue, we also introduce youto Staedtler, a name that may ring a
bell. The venerable Staedtler company, previously known primarily as a pencilmanufacturer, has recently introduceda premium line of writing instrumentsin a range of prices to please most penlovers. Staedtler’s distinctive Princeps,on the cover of this issue, is only oneexample of what you’ll see in our coverstory on pages 46–49.
You won’t want to miss DeborahBasel’s article about rising letter artistDao Huy Hoang, Julian Kreeger’s articleon ink tips, or Margana Maurer’s ongreat inks you may have overlooked.By the way, I have never met Marganaofficially—I know her only from herwonderful Inkophile blog(inkophile.wordpress.com). I, too, amlearning.
To get back to the reporters’ ques-tion: do I think the world will collectivelystop writing the old fashioned way? No way. Will successive generationsembrace writing instruments in largeenough numbers to preserve writing culture as we know it? I don’t have acrystal ball. But there’s a lot in this issue to indicate that the future is invery good hands.
The venerable Staedtler (pronounced STATE-ler) re-enters theluxury pen market with a plethora of new products.
Staedtlerof the Art
BY NICKY PESSAROFF
Staedtler is the pencil manufac-turer you haven’t heard of butshould. You haven’t heard of it
because, for centuries, it has flownunder the radar as a European indus-trial design company specializing inexceptionally crafted pencils with anaesthetic flair. For decades, the com-pany has consistently churned outremarkable writing instruments usingthe most innovative of technologies.
In the Heart of BavariaWhile the company was founded in1835 by Johann Sebastian Staedtler, itsorigins can be traced all the way backto the mid-1600s and the Nurembergarea of Germany, where pencils wereborn. Corey Cooper, assistant productmanager of writing instruments forStaedtler-Mars Limited, NorthAmerica, says, “The name Staedtler isclosely connected to the Nuremberg
pencil history. Friedrich Staedtler hadbeen active as a pencil making crafts-man. First references to him in thecity annals date back to 1662.Friedrich Staedtler was the first artisanto manufacture pencils from start tofinish, beginning with cutting thewood and lead and ending with a finewriting instrument. In 1835, hisdescendant J. S. Staedtler officiallyformed Staedtler in Nuremberg, and

by the 1850s, the company employeddozens and produced thousands ofpencils each year.” Staedtler continued to grow, introducing the Noris and Marsbrands at the turn of the 20th century—the latter named after the Roman god.The company still honors its roots byincluding “Mars” in the company’sofficial name, Staedtler Mars GmbH& Co. KG, and the “Mars head” logoalso appears on every Premiumproduct. The image has been part ofthe company logo since 1958 as asymbol of “unrelenting purpose, creativity, and pioneering spirit,”according to Cooper. By the 1920s, Staedtler had goneglobal in a big way, introducing aU.S. headquarters in New York in1922 and following with a Japaneseexpansion in 1926. In the 1930s, thecompany began manufacturingmechanical pencils, and in the 1940s,Staedtler branched into the pen market, making ballpoints at first. In the 1950s,Staedtler introduced the Lumocolor
brand of markers, and in the 1960s,technical pens followed. Throughoutits history, a series of savvy companyheads purchased brands that furtherexpanded Staedtler’s reach. One ofthose acquisitions was the Germanbrand Élysée, which served as thecompany’s premium line until pro-duction ceased in 2000. One of itsmost memorable pens was theManfred Eberhard–designedImpression No. 1, which graced thecover of PW’s October 1994 issue.
Bridging the GapWith the introduction of Staedtler’sPremium lines in 2013, the companymade its long-overdue re-entry intothe fine writing market so that onceagain it covers the entire spectrum ofwriting instruments and can be con-sidered a “lifetime” brand. One interesting element ofStaedtler’s various Premium offeringslies in the consistency of certaindesign details. Cooper explains,“What differentiates the Staedtler
Premium Assortment from otherswithin the market is the same thingthat binds each article to one another. The associated elements include ourdistinctive clip, our unified barrelshape, and our pronounced Marslogo.” Nearly every product has a Latinname, another reference to Mars. The products in the StaedtlerPremium lines are categorized in twogroups: the Initium Collection andthe J. S. Staedtler Collection. TheInitium Collection includes the Resina($139–169), Lignum ($189–279), andMetallum ($179–259), all named forthe materials from which they aremade: resin, wood, and metal. Thesewriting instruments are available in allfour modes, and the steel nibs on thefountain pens come in extra-finethrough broad. The J. S. Staedtler Collectioncomprises the brand’s finest writinginstruments, including our stunningcover pen for this issue, the Princeps.Made of European black walnut withina palladium-plated framework, the

The cartridge/converter foun-tain pen comes with an 18 karat goldnib, coated in platinum and availablein fine, medium, and broad.Rollerball, ballpoint, and mechanicalpencil are also available. For unique choices of material, look no further than the AlbertusDurerus Noricus fountain pen($4,289), a limited edition of 541pieces. An homage to German painterand polymath Albrecht Dürer, the penis covered with Simmental cattleleather with a likeness of Dürerapplied with Staedtler’s patented ink-jettechnology. The Pen of the Season linefeatures polymer clay barrels and is
created by a different internationalartist to represent each season. ThePen of the Season is limited to 90 penseach season; they are available inNorth America only via special orderand may be seen at staedtler.com. At the top of the line is theBavaria ($34,800), a work of art honor-ing the birthplace of J. S. Staedtler. The blue and white pattern on thebarrel recalls the Bavarian flag, and 48diamonds are set in the clip. Only 48pieces are available worldwide.
Progressive Pencil MakingEven with such elite offerings, Staedtlerhas not abandoned its original prod-uct—pencils. Staedtler’s pencils areremarkable both for design and ecolog-ical awareness. Not only is Staedtler’sThe Pencil the first wood cased pencil
ever to be fitted with a stylus (a tech-nology Staedtler has patented), but it isalso made of Staedtler’s proprietaryWOPEX—a semi-acronym standingfor wood pencil extrusion. The processof extrusion uses “more of the tree,”says Cooper, and creates a strongerlead than that of conventional pencils. The Pencil won both a Red Dot Awardand an iF (International Forum) awardfor product design last year. The Pencilcan be purchased in a set of three, plusa cap that houses an eraser andsharpener, for $79. The company takes seriously itsrole as stewards of the Nurembergforests. “Existing products and manu-facturing processes are continuallyreviewed for optimization possibilitiesand whether they comply with ecological efficiency,” Cooper says.

“Through the unique and completelyPVC-free manufacture of mechanicalpencil leads, we, as the largest manu-facturer of mechanical pencil leads inEurope, achieve environmentallysound production at our headquarterslocation in Germany while complyingwith the highest demands for quality.”Further, strict European guidelinesensure that environmental awarenessis always at the forefront.
Artists and artisans have usedStaedtler for decades—not just pencilsand markers but also its brand ofmodeling clay, Fimo. This compositematerial’s utility allows it to be used forall sorts of creative endeavors. “WithFimo, you can create almost anything:jewelry or accessories, picture framesor decorations, dolls and figures, flowers and sculptures; everything ispossible,” Cooper says. “The vast
range of Fimo colors and the uniquetexture make it possible to imitate othermaterials in a remarkably convincingway: wood, stone, glass and manyothers.” The wide array of Fimo’sapplications will satisfy the professionalartist, the casual dabbler, and the exper-imenting child. Further, the company’sofferings for young writers are some ofthe most diverse and well-made writinginstruments on the market.
And Staedtler is poised for moregrowth. Its writing instruments areavailable both online and at fineretailers across the United States andCanada. Pen lovers should expect thenew old name of Staedtler to becomeonly more prominent with time.
