verse group of individuals that currently

serve on the Pembina County Board of

Health. the roles and responsibilities

that come along with serving as a board

member.

The Pembina County Board of

Health consists of: Hugh Ralston, Pem-

bina County Commissioner; Dr. Joseph

Allred, practicing dentist in Cavalier; Dr.

Kristi Midgarden, family physician who

has her own practice in Park River; Deb

Fraser, Administrator of Pembilier Nurs-

ing Center in Walhalla; and Jeanna Kuja-

va, PCPH Director. Each member brings

the health of the public in Pembina

County.

The Board meets quarterly in the

Farmer’s Room of the Pembina County

Courthouse and receives correspond-

ence as needed for actions that require a

response in between scheduled

meetings.

Some of the Pembina County

Board of Health responsibilities may

include advising PCPH on their role

in the county and helping to devel-

op guidelines and regulations for

those roles.

The Board provides insight on

priorities and opportunities for

PCPH to serve the communities of

Pembina County. Current priorities

include preparedness and response,

environmental health, injury preven-

tion, maternal child health, school

health and immunizations, correc-

tional health, behavioral health, to-

to minors,

tobacco-free parks and recrea-

The Pembina County Parenting Education Committee, of which Pembina County Public Health is a part, hosted

a free parenting education workshop on April 22nd at the Drayton School.

The speaker was Harvey Uken, who has experience in a variety of behavioral health settings. He provided infor-

mation about transforming the Difficult Child by using the Nurtured Heart Approach. The Nurtured Heart Approach has

been proven to create greatness in even the most intense children in inspiring ways. Children learn to believe in

themselves and have confidence in successes that flow from investing intensity, intelligence, and life force into posi-

tive action.

Twenty-three were present and left with a powerful set of skills to help children live life and flourish! Continuing

education credits were offered to licensed child care providers. Thank you to the Drayton School for helping to

make this event a success!

Substance Abuse Prevention Grant Awarded

Pembina County Public Health (PCPH) was recently awarded a Substance Abuse Prevention Grant through the

North Dakota Department of Human Services to support substance abuse prevention efforts in Pembina County.

The grant period is June 1, 2017 through September 30, 2017. PCPH, along with the Pembina County Behavioral

Health Workgroup, plan to do several different projects throughout the grant period.

Be on the look out for the Lock.Monitor.TakeBack. media campaign. This is an evidence-based prevention effort

with the primary goal of reducing access to prescription drugs, especially opioids, by encouraging North Dakotans

to be safe with their medications. The campaign promotes North Dakota Take Back locations and ways communi-

ties can support this effort at the local level. PCPH, along with the Pembina County Sheriff’s Department, is proud

to be hosting three take back events throughout the summer months. During these events, bring any unwanted or

unused prescription and over-the-counter medications to be disposed of properly; no questions asked!

ized follow-up. It covers a range of issues including falls and risk, strength and balance exercises,

home hazards, safe footwear, vision and falls, safety in public places, community mobility, coping

after a fall, and understanding how to initiate a medication review.

The classes will start on August 10, 2017 and be held weekly every Thursday until September

21, 2017 at the Drayton Senior Center from 9:30am until 11:30am. To register, call NDSU
