15 Lady President Report - November, 2013
Busy, busy, busy, is the keyword at the Club for the next few weeks. Today (23rd) we held a most successful "Springtime Fiesta" with 32 teams from Bribie Island to Te-
wantin-Noosa, and most of the Sunshine Coast clubs in between represented.
Sincere "Thank You's" go to Wendy Tonks - Games Director, her assistant Shirley Carr; Loretta Searchfield and her assistant Sue Armitage for their efficient organisa-tion. Also on the "Thank You" list is Pattie Smith; (assistance with scoring); Joan Gaedkte for organising the raffle prizes, and the volunteers who sold the raffle tick-ets; plus Judy Davis, Robin Skye, Julie Wolff for their computer skills in producing the
winning envelopes and placemats;
The Craft Ladies are delighted with the success of their 10th quilt raffle, which was
won by a Quilter from the North Street craft group.
Special mention must be made of the superb lunch that the kitchen staff pro-vided. To serve a 2-course meal to 128 ladies, and have it all cleared away within three-quarters of an hour was something one does not see happen in many other res-
taurants. Well done to the Staff for their work.
I do not forget our major Sponsors - Pelican Waters Real Estate; Smith's Jewellers and our own Club, plus other vouchers from Bunnings, and Stockland. Our thanks also to the umpires for the day - Kevin Skimin and Greg Harvey. I do hope I have not for-
gotten anyone, but a Grand Job was done by so many
Now for Special Dates for November:
Wednesday 6 November - Past President's Day/Fun & Friendship Day
Wednesday 13 November - President's "At Home" Day,
Wednesday 20 November - Graded and Drawn Triples competition,
Monday 25 November - Ladies Arm AGM Nominations
required please.
Happy Bowling, Margaret McNutt, Lady President.
14 Recipe of the Month
Pork & Vegetable Stir Fry
Ingredients:
1 cup long-grain white rice 1 package (12 oz) refrigerated vegetable medley (broccoli, baby carrots and cauli-flower) 1 can (8 oz) pineapple slices 12 ounces thin-cut, boneless pork chops, cut into thin strips 1/2 cup stir-fry sauce
2 tablespoons canola oil
1 Directions
1. Cook the rice according to package directions. 2. Meanwhile, cut the broccoli and cauliflower into small florets. Cut the carrots
lengthwise in 3 strips. Drain the pineapple (reserve the juice) and cut into 1/2-in. pieces.
3. In a medium bowl, toss the pork with 2 Tbsp of the stir-fry sauce. Heat 1 Tbsp oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the pork and cook, tossing often until browned, 2 to 3 minutes; transfer to a plate.
4. Wipe out the skillet and heat the remaining Tbsp oil over medium-high heat. Add the vegetables and cook, tossing, for 3 minutes. Add the pineapple juice and remaining stir-fry sauce and bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer, until the vegetables are just tender, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the pork and pineapple and toss to heat through. Serve over the rice.
Chairman’s Report:

At our last Bord meeting, former Director Bill Murray was appointed as a Director
to fill a vacancy on the Board; Bill was welcomed by all on the Board.
The recent “Medley” held at the Club was a huge success and congratulations
must go to the organisers and sponsors of the day, many players asked when the
next one will be.
Our Club fees are now due by the end of the year and early payment of these
would be much appreciated.
The Board decided at our last meeting to hold the fees at $95.00 for next year.
We have our “Volunteers Day” coming up shortly and this day will be sponsored
by our Insurance Brokers BCIB. I would like ALL our volunteers to come along
on the day; there will be FREE BOWLS—DRINKS and a B.B.Q watch the Notice
Board for this event.

Quilters group—congratulations.
13 M.B.A. President’s Report:
President Bob and his wife Pauline are away in Sydney at present, so hence no
report for this month, we hope they have a good time and safe driving.
The Sydney Opera House opening was 20th October 1973, 40 years ago and I remember the day so well, a very moving ceremony, especially with a very talented Indigenous person namely, Blanasi and best known for playing his
didgeridoo atop the Sydney Opera House during opening ceremonies.
Just a bit of info from Judy
I apologise for the mistakes that I make from time to time and appreciate those
that have the courage to let me know.

12 TIPS FROM COACH KEN
This is the last entry in the Pelican Brief from me in 2013. I hope over the past
year some of the items in the coaches’ section have been helpful and given you some
ideas to try out or just remind you what you should be doing.
Lets this month look at some safety first issues around us and what we should be aware of:
None of us wish to be injured or cause an injury to another person during our time at the club. By taking the trouble to observe a few precautions, we can lessen the chance of this happening.
1. Always place the mat correctly on the bank, never just throw it up on the edge where part of it may be hanging over the edge, folded up and someone could trip over it or mistake the edge of the bank and have a nasty fall.
2. Close your bowls bag and place it out of the walkway so it will not cause an injury.
3. When stepping on and off the green, watch your clothes don’t get caught on the boundary peg.
4. Always step on and off the green SIDEWAYS. 5. If you need a step to help you USE ONE, don’t be embarrassed about need-
ing help. A broken leg or back is not a good idea! 6. If having a drive, make sure everyone that is around you are aware and steps
aside. ”At the bar is a good idea”. 7. Place your bowls to the left of the mat at least a metre away, not at the rear
of the mat. 8. People still go backwards after their delivery. Not looking is a good way to
fall over the bowls if they are not where they should be or even trip over the bank.
9. Place your bowls lifter out of the way, don’t leave it lying on the ground for someone to fall over. Place it on the bank out of people’s way or in a safe spot.
10. Don’t lick your fingers after you bowl. You have no idea what might be on the green.
11. Now the warmer weather is with us it is important that you drink plenty of water during the game. Are you aware that our experts tell us that you can lose 2 litres of water playing the game? This must be replaced, if not, we can become dehydrated. Every second end, have a drink of water.
12. Watch out for objects left lying around the club and greens that you could trip over and hurt yourself. Report any problems to the controlling body of the day to get someone to fix it.
I have mentioned just some of the safety items we should be aware of. Coach Ken. 17/10/13.

Law of Mechanical Repair - After your hands become coated with grease, your nose will be-
gin to itch and you'll have to pee.
Law of Gravity - Any tool, nut, bolt, screw, when dropped, will roll to the least accessible cor-ner. Law of Probability -The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of your act. Law of Random Numbers - If you dial a wrong number, you never get a busy signal and someone always answers. Supermarket Law- As soon as you get in the smallest line, the cashier will have to call for help. Variation Law - If you change lines (or traffic lanes), the one you were in will always move
faster than the one you are in now
Law of the Bath - When the body is fully immersed in water, the telephone rings. Law of Close Encounters - The probability of meeting someone you know increases dra-matically when you are with someone you don't want to be seen with. Law of the Result - When you try to prove to someone that a machine won't work, it will. Law of Biomechanics - The severity of the itch is inversely proportional to the reach. Law of the Theater & Hockey Arena - At any event, the people whose seats are furthest from the aisle, always arrive last. They are the ones who will leave their seats several times to go for food, beer, or the toilet and who leave early before the end of the performance or the game is over. The folks in the aisle seats come early, never move once, have long gan-gly legs or big bellies and stay to the bitter end of the performance. The aisle people also are very surly folk. The Coffee Law - As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, your boss will ask you to
do something which will last until the coffee is cold.
Murphy's Law of Lockers - If there are only 2 people in a locker room, they will have adja-cent lockers. Law of Physical Surfaces - The chances of an open-faced jam sandwich landing face down on a floor, are directly correlated to the newness and cost of the carpet or rug. Law of Logical Argument - Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about. Brown's Law of Physical Appearance - If the clothes fit, they're ugly. Oliver's Law of Public Speaking - A closed mouth gathers no feet. Wilson's Law of Commercial Marketing Strategy - As soon as you find a product that you really like, they will stop making it. Doctors' Law - If you don't feel well, make an appointment to go to the doctor, by the time
you get there you'll feel better.. But don't make an appointment, and you'll stay sick.

7 SECRETARY’S REPORT FOR NOVEMBER:
At its October Meeting, the Board appointed Bill Murray to fill a casual vacancy created
when John and Sue Rachel resigned. It is good to have Bill back on the Board and also
good to report that Rod Bottomer has accepted the position of Administration Officer for the
Men’s Bowling Arm. Rod replaces John Flood who resigned due to ill heath after many
years as Admin Officer.
Other matters considered by the Board included:
2014 Membership Fees - despite a 10% increase in Bowls Qld Affiliation Fees, the
Board decided not to increase our Club Fees for 2014. The membership fee for a
full adult member will remain unchanged at $95 of which the Club will retain
approximately $30;
Repairs and Maintenance – the Board approved a quotation for a new solar hot water
system to replace the Club’s existing hot water system which is in need of signifi-
cant upgrade and repair. We expect the new system can be purchased and in-
stalled with surplus funds from the Government Grant we received for a solar elec-
tricity system and, therefore, at no additional cost to the Club;
Super Challenge – the Board approved payment of the nomination fee to enter a
Men’s and Ladies team in the Bronze Division of the 2014 Super Challenge and
also agreed with a recommendation from the Men’ s Bowling Arm that players
receive a portion of any prize money won;
Come ‘n’ Try Day – Pelican Waters Bowls Club is one of two Sunshine Coast Clubs
registered to participate in the Bowls Australia sponsored Come ‘n’ Try Day to be
held on 16 November. Promotion of the event will include letterbox drops and na-
tional advertising. This will be our major membership drive for 2013 and the Board
encourages members to take the day seriously, help promote the event and, if they
can, bring a friend;
Club Finances - trading profit for the month was $7,767 with all areas contributing.
By the time you read this, Notices of Meetings will have been posted for the Annual General
Meetings of the Bowling Arms to be held on 25 November and Nominations called for posi-
tion on the Committees. I am sure we have many members who can contribute and would
encourage anyone with an interest in Club activities to seriously consider nominating.
