Tallinn aims at obtaining the title of the European Green Capital by the year 2018. Achieving that goal requires a lot of responsible work so that the city would meet many environmental demands: green areas must be appropriate for everyone and be a part of the public domain; air quality and noise pollution, garbage disposal, water consumption and wastewater purification need to comply with standards. e image of a green capital is illustrated by environmentally friendly and safe beaches with excellent water quality and the functional infrastructure of natural values that allow city dwellers to spend a pleasant holiday here. Green areas in urban environments need to be preserved and used well. is is something we all have to work for in the name of the title of the Green Capital.

Pelgurand is situated in Tallinn and is a part of Kopli Peninsula. Kopli got its name from hundreds of years ago, when the people of Tallinn used to herd their animals in the
woods and pastures of the area. In the past, this was the location of a fishing village and a brickyard. Most of the stone roofs of medieval Tallinn were made from the blue clay from Kopli. There have been several large factories, assembly plants and ports (Bekker Port, Meeruse Port, Vene-Balti Port etc.) on Kopli Peninsula.
The water near Kopli Peninsula was considered to be polluted for a long time. At the moment, industrial enterprises employ efficient purification devices and wastewater from housing estates is led to the disposal plant of Paljassaare. In case of rain water, there are mandatory filters for sand and oil, guaranteeing the standard quality of water. According to the bathing water directive of the European Union, the quality of swimming water is estimated as very good, good, satisfactory or deficient.
The Health Board has estimated the water of Pelgurand according to the requirements of the directive to be very good. You can find information about the quality of bathing water in particular beaches at this Internet address: http://www.terviseamet.ee/keskkonnatervis/vesi/suplusvesi/avalikud-supluskohad.html.

One of the environmental problems of the Baltic Sea, which affects swimming beaches as well, is the evolving of algae. To reduce the unpleasant smell of algae that has been washed to shore, seaweed is removed immediately after it has piled up on the beach to counteract biodegradation. The sand dunes, fixed to the spot by sand-ryegrass, give a pleasant appearance to the beach. To help fix the sand, some rugosa roses, which originate from the shores of the Pacific Ocean, have been planted. Pelgurand is also known by the name Stroomi rand (Stroomi Beach). The area got its name from Stroomi Tavern, situated near the crossing of Paldiski Road and Mustamäe Road, owned by Bengt Fromhold Strohm in the first half of the 19th century. Development of the Stroomi beach park started in 1935 at the initiative of the Pelgulinna Beach Upkeep and Decoration Association. At the moment, the park covers 22.4 hectares and over 50 different woody plant species grow there. The southern part of the beach park borders with Stroomi forest, also called Merimets, a habitat for many birds and an important recreational area for people. You can spend your leisure time actively, using the 2.5 kilometre light traffic lane that connects the 8

districts of Haabersti and Northern Tallinn. That is the shortest way for cyclists, roller skaters and pedestrians to get to Stroomi Beach. There are many objects under nature protection in Northern Tallinn: Krulli rock, Kopliranna rock, Silver maple Wieri, black poplar, red ash, red juniper. Six plant species under nature protection grow here: the early purple orchid, Marsh Helleborine, Bird’s-nest Orchid, wild pea of seashores, Sea-pink, Small Pasque Flower. A butterfly species under protection has also been spotted: the Large Copper.
There used to be an oak wood at the northern side of Stroomi Park. Most of it was chopped down in 1912 due to the construction of the Russian-Baltic Shipyard-Machinery and Bekkeri Factory. Now, only five indigenous oaks have been preserved, but are scattered around Kopli: in Kopli Cemetery (perimeter, p=410 cm), on the shipyard territory (p=500 cm), in the tram junction (p=550 cm), Kaluri St. 2 (p=391cm) and Vasara St. 4 (p=459cm) There are three protected parks in the area: Kopli Park, also known as Birch Park, Kalamaja Cemetery Park and Kopli

Kalamaja Cemetery Park
Cemetery Park. Both cemeteries were closed in the 1950s and turned into a parks. Kopli as well as Kalamaja cemetery parks were taken under protection in 1993. Nowadays, both parks are well developed and popular recreation areas. Kopli (Birch) Park features a boulder field.
In the northern and western part of Paljassaare Peninsula, there is a preservation area, established in 16.06.2005. This area of 227 hectares is important in the entire Europe, as 227 species of birds have been registered there.
According to the data of Tallinn Bird Club, 82 species spotted in Paljassaare are under protection in Estonia; 5 of them are in protection category I, 26 in protection category II and 51 in protection category III. 45 species registered in Paljassaare belong to the 1st additional document of the European Union birds directive. In 1994–2011, approximately 105 species of birds have nested in Paljassaare and surrounding grounds, 58 species annually.
On Paljassaare Peninsula, near Katariina Quai, is Pikakari Beach, which was opened to visitors in 2007. Those who wish to spend a pleasant afternoon after leaving Pelgurand can go to Tallinn Zoo or the Estonian Open Air Museum, located quite near Stroomi Beach, or take a walk around Kalamaja and Tallinn Passenger Port, where the Culture Kilometre can be found – 2.2 kilometres of light traffic lane.
The Culture Kilometre runs from Logi St. to Tööstuse St. Walking along the Culture Kilometre, one can see picturesque landscapes, including Linnahall (City Concert Hall), Kultuurikatel (Culture Cauldron), Suur-
