PEINER Umformtechnik is a subsidiary of the Indian company Sundram FastenersLimited. Sundram was founded in 1966 and is part of the TVS Group, one of the largestsuppliers to the automobile industry in India.Sundram has eight production facilities inIndia, mainly in the south, and subsidiaries inChina, Germany, Great Britain and Malaysia.

PEINER Umformtechnik is a highly qualifiedmanufacturer of mechanical fasteners andforged components, including finishing tocustomer specifications. Our 320 employeesat our production facility in Peine, Germanydesign products and develop cost-effectivemanufacturing processes to meet our customers needs. For more than 80 years, we have been a development partner of leading international automobile manufac-turers and major system suppliers for the following products:

• Fasteners for wind turbines• Fasteners for the automobile industry• High strength bolt assemblies for steel

constructions• High strength screws and bolts for

machines, plant and steel constructions• Special bolts and forged components for

custom applications

As a supplier of bolts and forged compo-nents, PEINER Umformtechnik has mademajor investments in innovative manufac-turing technologies, the latest organisationalstructures and systematic and comprehensive employee training and retraining. The technical challenges in themetal forging industry are certain to increasefurther in the future, accompanied withexpanding business opportunities. PEINERUmformtechnik is well prepared to take onnew challenges and make best use of thenew technologies.

Overview of the technologies

For metal forming, PEINER Umformtechnikuses two different production methods, coldand hot forging. Technical and economicalfactors influence the choice of the appropriate method. Production takes placeon modern multi-stage presses. High perfor-mance computer controlled machines areused for each stage of the mechanical processing. Hardening of the products takesplace in modern heat treating furnaces.

Surface coatings to protect against corrosionis carried out for PEINER Umformtechnik byservice companies who are specialized in this field.

Certification

Our quality assurance system is certified toDIN ISO 9001 and ISO/TS 16949. We areapproved by the TÜV (German TechnicalMonitoring Association) to AD-W0/TRD 100for low temperature high strength and heatresistant materials too. Our environmentalmanagement is certified to ISO 14001.

Design service

PEINER Umformtechnik provides its custo-mers with technical application and metal forming know-how during the product deve-lopment phase, including advice on handlingand final assembly. This ensures the mosteconomical approach to achieving the required product quality and minimizing the overall cost of the fastening. We keep aheadof the latest technical developments as aresult of our participation in research anddevelopment programs at higher educationinstitutes and universities.

Application engineering, technical support,

development and design

A lot of experience is required to design highstrength fasteners. Our application and pro-ject engineers plan, develop and implementthe best solutions from the functional andmanufacturing viewpoints in close cooperation with our customers’ designdepartments. The cooperation covers allaspects of the fasteners and aims to reducecosts. Together with our own tool productionfacilities, our design and developmentdepartments routinely take on challengingtasks, including the modification and furtherdevelopment of existing mass produced components.

All stages of development – from the initialdesign to technical drawings of mass produced parts, tool design and manufacture, initial production samples and inspectionthrough to mass production - are handled byhighly qualified specialists using the latesttechnical systems.

Mechanical processing

The threads are formed without cutting using rolling mills with flat or cylindrical dies or three point rolling mills. Internal threads for nuts are manufacturedwith thread cutting machines.

After forging, special bolts and forged partsare finished using machining centres if theyto meet special requirements for shape andtolerance.

Heat treatment

Heat treatment is used to give the materialspecial properties such as toughness, tensilestrength and surface hardness. Quenchingand tempering at a carefully controlled temperature, is used to give the fastenersand forged components the optimum mechanical characteristics. This takes place inprocess-stable tempering furnaces using thelatest heat treatment technology in conjunc-tion with computer-based process control andmonitoring equipment.

Quality assurance

Quality assurance is more than just qualitycontrol. Quality must be developed, planned, designed, produced and sold. The steps wetake are designed to meet the requirementsand expectations of our customers. The quality assurance system at PEINER Um-formtechnik follows the guidelines of Germanand international standards in accordancewith the customers requirements. The com-puter based QA system is documented incomprehensive testing plans and a qualityassurance protocol according to ISO 9001and ISO/TS 16949.

Our quality assurance department has a laboratory for all relevant test methods. Thisincludes mechanical and technical tests (e.g.tension and compression tests, Charpyimpact tests, hardness tests, determination of the coefficient of friction), and non-destruc-tive tests (e.g. magnetic crack testing, metal-lography and emission spectroscopy).

Our laboratory is approved to ISO/EC 17025and in addition to producing test certificatesaccording to EN 10204 carries out compre-hensive technical analyses and specialistreports.

smaller productions runs due to the lowertooling and setting up costs. We use bothmanufacturing methods and can thus provide our customers with the best technicalapproach and the lowest possible manufac-turing costs for a wide range of products.

Our production equipment is state of the artand we use the latest generation of multi-stage cold and hot presses.

Cold and hot forging

The choice of the appropriate manufacturingmethods is influenced by technical and economical considerations. Cold forging ismainly used for large scale production, asmall to medium compression set and com-ponent dimensions of up to M33. Hot forgingallows the production of larger componentsand more complicated shapes with a highcompression set. It is also economical for

Products with the Peiner label have been asign of quality for demanding architects andengineers for more than 50 years. They havebeen used in temporary bridges over theSchelde in Holland and to refurbish numerous bridges over the Donau, Rhein and Weichsel. In addition bolts and fastenersfrom Peiner have been used for numerousnew bridges with exceptional structural

construction.

In addition to special components to custo-mer specifications, PEINER high strengthscrew fasteners from our high strengthmanufacturing program (strength class 8.8,10.9 an 12.9) are used for a wide range of applications in steel construction and bridges.

requirements, for example bridges over theBelt, motorway and railway bridges inGermany and Europe and the largest bridgein Greece over the Peloppones (Harilaos,Trikoupus Bridge). One of the most spectacu-lar projects was the first bridge over theBosporus in Istanbul using special bolts andfasteners from Peiner.

Our service department provides technicaladvice for dimensioning, design and assemb-ly and carries out seminars for planners, designers and assembly personnel.
