Burwood, North New Brighton, and New Brighton Anglican parishes plan to combine, because they are losing worshippers.

Through the merger the com-bined parish will cover a large area along Pegasus Bay, stretching from Southshore to Spencerville. The name of the new parish has still to be decided.

Burwood Anglican Parish warden Elizabeth Hanley said the

church alone had lost about 20 per cent of its mem-bers since the earthquake.

“We have got quite a few parishio-ners who have gone into rest homes, and others who have moved to other suburbs.”

She said that meant it wasn’t vi-able to run so many parishes.

The com-bined parish will be formed in November.

It will be centred on the All Saints Burwood site, because of its facilities and

also because it has very little earth-quake damage.

St Mark’s at Marshland and St Luke’s (left), at South New

Brighton will continue as wor-ship centres, while St Faith’s New Brighton and St Andrew’s North New Brighton will continue their community focused ministries during the week.

A Transitional Action Group has been formed to work out the details of the merger, identifying the strengths of each parish, and coming up with a mission action plan for the new parish.

A plan to build temporary accom-modation for the homeless in New Brighton has sparked a mixed reaction from locals.

The plans to build an accom-modation village were outlined at a city council meeting by Help for the Homeless Christchurch founder Amy Burke.

Some people are concerned the plans could create a ghetto.

But New Brighton community groups all agree on one thing – that homelessness in the east is a problem.

Just two weeks ago, Southshore residents found someone sleeping rough on the dunes.

Volunteers at St Faith’s New Brighton hold a free community lunch each week.

St Faith’s community develop-ment worker Mary McCammon said this winter they saw, on aver-age, one new person each week who was homeless.

“Every week we have people in here who are homeless or des-perately looking for accommoda-tion, or sleeping rough. It’s a huge problem.”

But although she acknowledged the problem, she had concerns about the Help for the Homeless plan.

The plan put to the city council was to build a village of separate units, with communal living spaces and gardens.

The group initially hoped to build the village in Rawhiti

Domain, but are now looking at building it on red-zone land.

When the plans were posted on social media, Ms Burke was ac-cused of creating a “ghetto”.

Ms Burke did not respond to the Pegasus Post for comment.

Ward city councillor Glenn Livingstone has spoken with Ms Burke about the plan.

He believed “ghettoisation” could be avoided if it was well designed.

“If it’s not done well there is a concern. Any initiative like this needs to be done well and done right the first time.”

But he believed the plan was well thought out.

Ms McCammon agreed that more accommodation for the homeless was needed.

But she was concerned about how that was done.

“Some people who are homeless are homeless because of problems like drug addictions, and for some people it is purely financial, so I don’t know if lumping everyone together would be helpful.”

She said it would be important it was well managed and well staffed.

“It would have to be some place that offered hope to people rather than making them feel like they’ve ended up at the bottom of a heap.

“You don’t need a lot of money for that but you need to be con-nected with community resources,

and have the right people behind it.”

Burwood-Pegasus Commu-nity Board chairwoman Andrea Cummings said she did not know details of the plan.

She was concerned that as earthquake-damaged houses in the area were demolished, the homeless would become more visible.

“I’ve heard anecdotally that a lot of people have been sleeping in the abandoned houses, and obviously as they are demolished they’re going to need somewhere to go, and that’s going to add a lot of pressure.”

A report from city council staff on possible locations for a hub has been requested.

That is expected to be put to the city council in October.

Hi Kaila, I can immediately tell you’re from the US from your accent.

That’s right, I was born and bred in New York City.

What’s life like there? It’s a little bit like the mov-

ies to be honest. There’s always something amazing going on and the kids are all doing ridiculous

things. I thought it was a great place to grow up. I thought I was street smart growing up, but honestly, when I first came to New Zealand about 10 years ago I had trouble with the simple things like hanging up a clothes line or lighting a fire. I couldn’t tell the difference between a sheep and a goat. A friend once said my intelli-gence goes down with population density when I move around.

Why come to New Zealand? It was a boy who brought me here, actually.

Are you still together? We’re not together any-

more but we are still friends and I am eternally grateful to him for bringing me to this

country.Did you have any plans when you

came?I literally had no

idea what I was going to do when I first came here. I don’t have a simple job title like an accountant or lawyer so I had trouble finding work as someone who was broadly

capable. I had done a whole heap of things before that in the US. My degree was in hotel and restaurant administration. I’ve worked in visual printing, in the wholesale jewellery industry . . . I guess I would call myself a serial entre-preneur. Then I worked in graphic design and for a PR company. I also work for TEDxChristchurch, which is a programme of local events that bring people together to spread ideas. We’ve had events where inspirational speakers speak on a whole heap of subjects.

How was the Ministry of Awe-some founded?

In early 2012, myself and a few like-minded people decided that the city needed support for all the people who were trying, and maybe struggling, to do awe-some things. At our first meeting, which was just me, Vicki Buck, Sam Johnson, and (former Ngai Tahu strategy manager) Sacha McMeeking, we just had a coffee at the Addington Coffee Co-op and signed a mock constitution. In our early days, we would just have dinner with someone rather than having a meeting in an office or some-thing.

What is the Ministry of Awe-some?

We try and open doors for people and help them make con-nections with key people in the city. We run around 70 events each year and have lots of people come along to our meetings. We have

hundreds of one-on-ones with people to offer them support.

We basically want to push people in Christchurch who are entrepreneurial. People shouldn’t think they’re crazy just because they have a crazy idea. What we might see is a computer program-mer turn up at one of our meetings and say they want to get involved in a project, then someone else might say: “Hey, I’m looking for a computer programmer.” We try and foster those serendipitous mo-ments.

Pick one recent success that the ministry has had?

Just recently, we gave a hand to Amy Burke who’s running the Help for the Homeless campaign in Christchurch. We saw what she was doing and called her up and asked if she wanted help running her meetings and putting a structure in place for her organisation. We let them use our office space. We’re helping them get set up as an of-ficial organisation. These may seem like small things, but sometimes people don’t know how to do them. There are people trying to do in-credible things, but they may have small barriers that stop them from doing what they want to do.

How is it funded? The Ministry of Awesome has

been incredibly lucky to get so much funding. The Canterbury Community Trust has backed us since our beginning. Kiwibank has been a great funder, and so has the city council.

Awesome ideas pushed toMinistry of Awesome founder Kaila Colbin was once a top amateur boxer in New York City. Now, she fights for people with entrepreneurial dreams in Christchurch. Max Towle talked to her about Coffee and Jam, cooking school, and street smarts.

VISION: Kaila Colbin wants the Ministry of Awesome to foster entrepreneurial ideas in Christchurch.PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN

What about your Coffee and Jam meetings?

Our meetings are extremely casual, but we now have about 80 people coming each week. And I’m fairly sure they’re not just coming for the free food. The purpose of the meetings is to help people connect with each other. We usually have someone pitch a new project or business in Christchurch, and then afterwards there’s an entrepreneurial educational speaker.

How did you meet people like Vicki Buck and Sam Johnson?

Sam I met through TEDx. But I think we’re all just like-minded

people. Christchurch is a very small place and once you start to tug on the thread that is Christch-urch, you find out it’s connected to the entire city.

What’s an average day in your life?

If there is such a thing? A typi-cal day would be lots of meetings. Something like the Ministry of Awesome is only successful because of the team behind it. It’s a lot of reaching out to random people, whether on Facebook or on the phone. We brought the former mayor of San Francisco down to Christchurch recently. How that happened was I Googled him, cold

called him from the white pages, first spoke to his wife on the phone, then convinced him to come here.

How would you like to see the future of the city develop?

My hope for Christchurch is that we realise the promise that emerged from the rubble. I don’t think that’s a promise of shiny new buildings, but of people who are creative, active, engaged, quirky, interesting, and diverse. We need that kind of reputation as a city. If someone is cutting edge, Christch-urch should be the kind of place that welcomes them.

Do you often travel back to the US?

I do. I’m on the board of the cooking school my mother founded in New York. It’s the oldest natural foods cooking school in the US. It’s called the Natural Gourmet Institute and we have an accredited professional chef training pro-gramme. My family is back in the States which is another reason why I go back and forth so frequently.

Are you a great cook?Actually, no, not really. I’m usu-

ally surrounded by so many people who are fantastic in the kitchen. I’m more of an “eatie,” than a “cookie.”

What are your hobbies?I am a rock climber and a boxer.

I used to be quite a serious boxer in around the year 2000. I had about eight fights and I was ranked second in the US in my category as an amateur. I also try to explore more of the South Island when I can.

The identities of trustees who will manage the New Brighton Strategic Urban Rejuvenation Force will be revealed within a fortnight.

Up to seven trustees will be appointed to run the community group, after founder and former manager Tony Brooks resigned two weeks ago.

More than $20,000 was raised for SURF through a community fundraising drive earlier this year.

Those funds are being man-aged by Westpac.

SURF volunteer Lesley Fulton is temporarily managing the group until the trustees are ap-pointed.

She said she could not talk about who they were, until they had accepted the positions.

But she said they were all peo-ple who were passionate about the community.

“They’re people who have been heavily involved in SURF and care about New Brighton, and really want to see SURF and the community keep growing in the future.”

She said they were still work-ing through the legal side of setting up SURF as a charitable trust.

That process was started earlier this year, while Mr Brooks was

still involved in the group. He planned to appoint trustees

to help him manage SURF.But when his business, the

Pierside Cafe and Bar, went into liquidation this month, he also stepped down from his position with the group.

Mr Brooks ran both the busi-ness and SURF from his home near Rotorua.

He told the Pegasus Post that he wanted to spend more time with his family.

Mrs Fulton said that Mr Brooks would be missed.

“It is a shame, and we’re going to miss him. But that’s life and SURF is definitely not going to fall over. It’s a moving, growing entity and there’s a big commu-nity behind it.”

She said it would be difficult to put a number on how many people were involved in SURF, because there were few people in the community who were not involved in some way.

Once the trustees are appoint-ed, discussions will be held about the future direction of SURF.

The way funds raised through SURF are spent will be decided through a community vote.

How the voting will be done has yet to be decided, but anyone from the New Brighton com-munity and people who have donated or contributed to SURF will be able to vote.

A New Brighton woman who brought the community together for school concerts more than 30 years ago has died.

Annette (Annie) Dick, nee Good-lad, was born in Union St, New Brighton. She lived in Owles Tce and married Maurice (Moby) Dick. They bought an old house in Union St, which Moby renovated.

She worked as a hairdresser, under-going an apprenticeship with Oinah Virtue at New Brighton Beauty Salon, which was near the sea end of Seaview Rd.

She also worked for many years with Margot Barberel at Salon Sym-phony in Oram Ave.

Annie played for the New Brighton school choir in 1980. In 1981 she and Mona Henderson asked the headmas-ter about arranging a concert at the end of the year.

This was a huge success and became an annual event.

Mona showed Annie how to sew all the costumes, and Moby made the scenery, and the Laredo band provid-ed the back-up music.

The school hall was packed out and all the proceeds went to underprivi-leged children in Christchurch.

There are videos of these concerts which the New Brighton Museum is saving and converting onto DVD, and these will be shown at the museum for the school reunion on Labour Weekend.

Annie is survived by her husband, Moby, and daughter, Carla.

Demolition of the Linwood Library on Cranley St began last week.

The library has been closed since it was damaged in the Feb-ruary 2011 earthquake, and again by fire in 2012. It has been deemed uneconomic to repair.

The demolition is expected to take three weeks, and will be

completed next month. The temporary Linwood Li-

brary and Service Centre will continue to operate in Eastgate Mall as the city council continues investigations into the future of the Cranley St site.

City council community facili-ties rebuild unit manager Darren Moses said care would be taken

to ensure the public was inconve-nienced as little as possible while the building was being demol-ished.

“We are aware that the library has been an eyesore since it was damaged by fire, so this is a sign of progress for Linwood resi-dents. While the temporary li-brary in the mall remains popular

with the community, the council will be continuing to look at how the service can be provided long-term in the area,” he said.

The city council plans to hold an expression of interest process for parties interested in leasing the empty site on a short-to-me-dium term basis until the future of the site is decided.

Linwood Library demolition begins

Work has began on a mural in the New Brighton mall, created by local artist Marie Ockleford. The project has been paid for through the city council Subur-ban Centres Transitional Budget. In February this year $30,000 was allocated towards temporary improvements in the mall. Those are intended to “bring vitality and interest into the mall while awaiting the rebuild.”

Children at Barnardos Kidstart Childcare in Shirley couldn’t wait any longer for a snow day.

After weeks of watching and waiting at the door when the sky looked dark and stormy, making mountains in the sandpit and sprinkling flour on them, and dancing elaborate snow dances, it looked like nothing would work.

Centre manager Dale Wiremu decided enough was enough, and the children would have snow.

“A phone call to Southern Ice solved the problem. They very kindly offered to donate some left over ice for the children and one of our lovely parents picked it up and delivered it,” she said.

“While it was being unloaded we did a snow dance and talked about what the sky looked like when it snowed. We moved like the snow clouds and drifted and twirled down to the ground like snowflakes. When it was ready we went out and found snow!”

She said that the children loved the snow.

“The children just loved it, picking it up and tasting it, slid-ing in it, lying down and making snow angels, throwing it in the air.”

Many conversations were started amongst the children about why the ice melted and how long it would last.

With cold weather forecast in the next few weeks, the children are still hoping for the real stuff.

BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Last Monday’s wild weather had fire crews zipping about to a variety of incidents including power lines down, roofing iron coming away, as occurred at the Court Theatre in Addington and at least three calls to runaway trampolines.

I’m not sure if we were dealing with the same trampoline here but if we were it seriously needs a choke chain.

One of these calls in Mairehau reported the trampoline stuck on the roof of a house although a later call in the same area had one lurch-ing down the street.

The final indignity for St Albans crew on arriving back at the station late in the afternoon was to find their entry denied by a fallen tree. More work.

Another week of kitchen fires with an occupant of a house in Flay Crescent, Burnside suffering burns in trying to rectify the situation. I believe he was not seriously in-jured.

An interesting point was the call last Thursday to a house in Innes Rd where a home sprinkler sys-tem had extinguished a cooking fire.

Finally springtime also means duckling time. St Albans has al-ready this week been called to res-cue several of these from a drain in Normans Rd. It appears the entire brood was returned safely to mum.

Local artists hope to use their skills to help victims of human trafficking, through a series of creative workshops in New Brighton next week.

Janie Porter has mobilised a group of her friends and acquaintances, who will volunteer their skills to lead community workshops.

They will teach every-thing from dance and sign language, to cake decorating and painting techniques.

All the funds raised through the “Louder” work-shops will go towards Hagar International Creative Arts and Recovery programmes

in Cambodia and Vietnam. The programmes teach

new skills to women and children who have been victims of slavery.

Ms Porter said that the group of friends had formed a registered charity, Artists Against Slavery.

“We’ve run art exhibitions in the past, but this will be the first time we’ve done anything like this.”

She expected more than 100 people at the workshops this year, and hoped the workshops would become an annual event.

“We’re starting small this year, but if all goes well we hope to expand it next year.”

She said that all the costs of the workshops would be paid for through separate donations, so all the funds raised through the work-shops would go to Hagar International.

The workshops will be held from October 9 to October 11, at the Grace Vineyard Beach Campus in Seaview Rd.

Workshops will also be held at the Grace Vineyard City Campus in Phillipstown.

More information on the workshops can be found at www.artistsagainstslavery.org. People can register for the workshops on the website, or at either of the church sites.

Artists to help victims of slavery

WORKSHOPS: Artists Against Slavery volunteers running community classes. They will lead a series of creative workshops in New Brighton next week.

We are proud to present to the community our monthly review of events.

• Our Monday Golden Oldie Films for October are: Make Mine Mink, 1960; The Cockleshell Heroes, 1955; Mary of Scotland, 1936; Last of the Summer Wine, 1971. Come early for a cuppa and a chat, and the films start at 1.30pm. Admission costs a $2 donation.

During September, the volunteers have been installing new cabinets and reorganising the permanent displays. The office and research room are to be updated with new shelves, to the great excitement of our researchers. We are working on setting up the museum’s new television screen so that visitors can choose videos of interest to watch as they please. This is one development in our quest to give visitors an interactive experience of New Brighton’s colourful history.

• Did you know? That a humble baker who arrived in

the Tudor in 1865 is known as the ‘Fa-ther of New Brighton’? George Thomas Hawker opened a bakery upon his arrival in St Albans, in Caledonian Rd,

next to a bootmaker. They built a boat together and travelled down the Avon to New Brighton, before anyone lived there and before horse racing on the beach became popular. An article in The Star in 1922 recalls Hawker saying to the bootmaker, “My word, this is going to be a big place one day.”

Hawker brought the first four-roomed cottage from Christchurch and took it, in sections, to Seaview Rd to use as a holiday home in 1876. He also planted lupins on the dunes to prevent the biting sandstorms. He successfully petitioned for New Brighton’s first post office in 1885, and the first school in 1890. A plaque commemorating Hawker’s con-tribution to New Brighton can be found outside the New Brighton Library, and more stories about New Brighton’s early days can be found at the New Brighton Museum.

The Museum is open from 10am to noon on Mondays, and every other day from 1pm to 3pm. We take bookings for school groups and community functions.

-What is cryolipolysis?

The technology of using cold to decompose fat cells was pioneered by the president of the Pennsylvania University School of Medicine in America and has since gained FDA approval as well as European CE. Unlike other slimming technologies out there, this one is designed as an alternative to liposuction- for areas of localized fat, e.g. back rolls, muffin tops, love handles. As such, we have enjoyed a lot of a success with this in areas like LA, Tokyo, Shanghai, Sydney where the people eat healthy, exercise regularly, but are bugged by the stubborn areas of fat. Coincidently, this type of client also shows the most noticeable improvement, where clinical trials have shown patients losing up to 10mm per treatment.

Fat Freeze machine gets results! The cryolipolysis (Fat Freeze) machine is so effective – you will be amazed by the results.

Research from the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery suggests a loss of 20 to 40 per cent for each treatment (where 20 per cent is the average). After a two-month wait, when you are ready for the next treatment, you can look forward to another 20 per cent and even more being lost. Sometimes one treatment is enough.

The technology of using cold to decompose fat cells was pioneered by the president of the Pennsylvania University School of Medicine in America and has since gained FDA approval as well as European CE.

Unlike other slimming technologies out there, this one is designed as an alternative to liposuction for areas of localised fat, for example, back rolls, muffin tops, love handles.

Can I use this treatment?Good candidates have bulges in certain

areas they want to get rid of. This is not a weight loss solution for people who are obese. The client should always consult with the practioner.

What can I do after the treatment?

Usually we have patients going back to work immediately after the session. Some patients experience redness, tingling or numbness in the treated area, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. For others some bruising and discomfort may occur.

How long until I see results?Visible changes occur as quickly as

three weeks, while the most dramatic results show after two months. The body will continue to flush out fat cells along with its toxins up to four to six months after treatment.

Are these changes here to stay, or will they disappear?

The affected fat cells will be eliminated. As long as you maintain your weight with your normal diet and exercise, your long-term results should remain stable.

Not suitable for people suffering from obesity, cardiac conditions or diabetes.

Find Red Beauty at 336 Bealey Avenue. Phone 366 3414, or visit www.redbeauty.net.nz.

How does the treatment work?With our treatment, we use a specially designed vacuum to gently draw up the skin area;

the automated cooling handles then starts the treatment, which can be programmable, including treatment time.

The great thing about this treatment, apart from that it’s simple and really effective, is that it’s designed to be a ‘lunchtime job’, where clients can return to normal activities right afterwards without discomfort and the only tell-tale signs being a flushed skin appearance (on the treated area) for a few hours.

Simple, effective

Insomnia, phobias, addictions, anxiety and weight management - many of us have experienced one or more of these throughout our

lives, perhaps especially so post-earthquake.

Rebecca Cragnolini believes that people do not need to suffer in silence, but can take control of their own wellbeing using some simple

but effective techniques. Self Hypnosis and Neurolinguistic Programming is based on the understanding that we are unique and we have all the resources within us to make the changes in our lives and attitudes. However, sometimes we require someone to work alongside to bring out these strengths. That’s where Rebecca comes in. She has 18 years of experience working in health for the Canterbury District Health Board and National Health Service in England and her passion for hypnosis is founded in her own discovery of how easily and effectively changes can take place when using these approaches.

The system she employs is a series of techniques designed to help people get positive and successful results. It is based on the understanding that within each of us is a wealth of resources which we barely use but once tapped can change our lives. Over

the years we can develop beliefs and habits that initially serve a purpose but now are unhelpful such as believing will never be able to lose weight, stop smoking, be calm in a plane. Techniques such as goal setting, relaxation and visualisation exercises bring about the change. Rebecca believes that when we know the changes have come from within us, we can have confidence they are sustainable and we are in control. While many of her clients see her individually, she also offers group sessions and is happy to go into workplaces or social groups to talk about what she does.

This is a gentle, empowering, pain-free system that lets us make our own changes based on the way we naturally learn and develop habits and is paired with Rebecca’s consistent positive feedback and support. Some clients see a change after just one visit, some after ten or more. It is highly individual, and working with a practitioner like Rebecca will provide support throughout the journey.

Help! I’ve got “quake-brain” – what can I do about it?

Since the earthquakes turned our lives upside down, do you have days when everything is in the “too hard” basket?

Do you have times when it’s hard to concentrate or prioritise all the things which need to be done and you just can’t seem to think straight however hard you try? Maybe you’ve joked about “quake-brain” or having a “senior moment” when you have struggled to remember something important, or perhaps you just can’t recall the last time you got a good night’s sleep.

Earthquakes don’t just damage the built environment; they also tear apart the fabric of everyday life, quite literally turning the world upside down for those affected. Recovery isn’t just about repairing buildings and infrastructure, communities and lives need to be rebuilt too.

We know from research that Cantabrians are weary, and that traumatic events like earthquakes - and dealing with their aftermath - take their toll on our minds and our bodies in many ways. New Zealand Red Cross have learned from international experience and created a series of training

sessions for community groups and workplaces to help us understand the science of stress and give practical tips on how we can support each other through the recovery process. Community sessions are free – all you need to provide is the venue (the workplace sessions are charged at a cost.)

So if you would like to learn more about how we respond to stress and how to cope with our natural reaction to an unnatural situation, why not book a free 45-minute training session for your community group? For more information or to book a workshop, visit www.redcross.org.nz/recoverytraining or phone 0800 468 873.

The people who write advertising slogans are clever with words.

They can make a simple frozen chicken hugely appealing.

A clever wordsmith named Ed McCabe was paid a substantial fee to write these ten words. “It takes a strong man to make a tender chicken.”

This slogan for Perdue Chickens helped sell 15 million frozen chickens through American supermarkets in one year. Yes, the chickens were top quality meat.

But the Perdue export department got it wrong. They translated the slogan into Spanish as “It takes an aroused man to make a chicken affectionate”.

Hispanic and Mexican cooks were not amused.

Three points to ponder. • Cleverwriterscanearnsubstantialfees.• TranslatingEnglishintootherlanguages

has traps for the unwary.• Proofreaders who understand two

languages are valuable people in exporting, document translating and book publishing.

“We show all our writing students how to get their articles, stories, poems or instruction books published,” says Brian Morris, Principal

Readers who are interested in writing or proofreading work at home should call 0800 801 994 and ask for the free report #805 When You Have A Passion For Story Telling. Whether your topic is food, electronics, cars, cooking, gardening, sport or business, there is satisfaction in getting your book written and published.

From Antarctica to Ireland to the Middle East: All on offer at the WEA

Learn about ‘Antarctic Exploration in the Heroic Age’ at the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA), this term.

This two-week course on Saturday morning introduces early Antarctic exploration and its link to New Zealand. “Pressing scientific questions demanded collaboration between different countries,” says course tutor Dr Ursula Rack. “Of greater public interest, however, was the touch of adventure. World War I brought Antarctic science to a halt, with the exception of the epic Endurance expedition, led by Ernest Shackleton, in which a New Zealand captain played a crucial part.”

‘Antarctic Exploration in the Heroic Age’ is one of several Saturday seminars at the WEA in October-November. Everyone is welcome to attend the courses, seminars and activity groups at the WEA which has been offering adult education in the city since 1915. The full list of courses on offer in October-November can be seen in our programme.

‘Ireland in the 21st Century’ is a Saturday afternoon seminar which critically examines the northern ‘settlement’, the southern economy and likely outcomes over the next decade. “The 21st century began with, officially at least, a great deal of promise,” says course tutor Dr Philip Ferguson. “Thirty years of armed conflict in the north came to an apparent end and the south of Ireland appeared to be entering a period of dynamic economic growth. By the end of the first decade of the century, however, things were less bright.”

Two further Saturday afternoon seminars look at recent history in Iraq, post 2003, and

the current situation in Iraq and Syria. The second afternoon seminar on November 22 seeks to highlight the ideology behind the extremist groups in Syria and Iraq and to explain how first, their doctrine differs from the other Islamic schools and second, to explain why the ongoing conflict in Syria and Iraq is not a sectarian war.

Rethinking Retirement is a one-day workshop for people who wish to make plans for the next stage in their lives, whether they are planning to retire or have already done; so planning for house and home needs, health needs, work (both paid and unpaid) options, networks and relationships, and achieving greater balance. This course will not include financial planning. Course tutor Ron Tustin is a professional retirement coach and writes a regular column on retirement issues for www.grownups.co.nz.

For further information about these courses or any others in the WEA programme, pick up a copy of the WEA programme at WEA, 59 Gloucester Street, from city libraries or go online to cwea.org.nz.

FOOD

Coriander and lime grilled chickenServes 4

Boneless chicken thighs are ideal for barbe-cuing as they cook all the way through fast. When cooking any meat it should not be cold straight from the fridge, allow it to stand at room temperature for at least 20 minutes before cooking so it cooks through evenly (not overcooked on the outside while the inside is still cold.)

Ingredients1½ Tbsp Fish sauce, or soy sauce1½ Tbsp Brown sugar2 tsp Ginger, finely grated or minced8 Boneless chicken thighs, skinless (about 800g)Marinade1 bunch Coriander, washed roots, stems and leaves, chopped2 cloves Garlic, minced

1 Lime, finely zested¼ cup Fresh lime juice

DirectionsBlend all marinade ingredients together in a food processor (if you don’t have a food processor, chop the coriander very finely and mix with all other ingredients). Combine the chicken with marinade and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 2 hours, or up to 24 hours. When ready to cook, remove chicken from fridge and stand at room temperature for 20-30 minutes. Cook on a preheated barbecue grill (me-dium to high heat) for 3-5 minutes on each side or until cooked through. Serve with a salad or slice chicken and toss with cooked vermicelli noodles, chopped fresh mint, shredded carrot, cu-cumber and a dressing made of fish sauce, lime juice, extra virgin olive oil and a bit of brown sugar.

New baby potato and salmon saladServes 4

Adding the salmon flakes and boiled eggs turns it into a hearty summer meal or great pot luck salad.

Ingredients200g Hot-smoked salmon fillets, flaked500g New potatoes4 Eggs, boiled, peeled and quartered5 sprigs Mint50g Baby spinach, leaves, about a cup1 Garlic clove, chopped1 tsp Lemon, zest¼ cup Olive oil2 Tbsp Water, warm1 Chives, snipped1 to taste Cracked black pepper

DirectionsCook potatoes in salted water until just tender when pierced with a knife. Drain and cool enough to handle, cut in half or quarters. In a large bowl, combine potatoes, flaked salmon and quartered eggs. For dressing, combine mint, spinach leaves, garlic and lemon zest in a food pro-cessor (or use a jug and a stick blender). Process until fine; add oil and enough warm water to make a thin, pourable dress-ing. Season to taste. Toss the salad with some or all of the dressing and arrange on a serving platter. Garnish with snipped chives and cracked pepper.Tip: If you have excess dressing, keep in the fridge and use for pasta or as a marinade for chicken or over grilled fish.

Chargrilled broccoliniServes 4 These beautiful thin-stemmed “mini broccoli’’ are the perfect cook-on-the-barbecue healthy green vegetable. They contain calcium, folate and iron, and are high in vitamin C. Charred, nutty and delicious served with either meat or fish, and the best bit — from fridge to table in less than 5 minutes, perfect.

Ingredients16 Broccolini, use up to 202 Tbsp Olive oil½ tsp Salt3 Tbsp Greek yoghurt¼ tsp Smoked paprika, or chilli flakes

DirectionsTrim broccolini stems to the same length. Toss in a bowl with oil and salt. Cook on a high heat until lightly charred and wilted. Serve garnished with greek yoghurt and sprinkle with smoked paprika or chilli flakes.

Coconut cashew coffee smoothieThis dairy-free afternoon yumminess is surprisingly rich, creamy and satisfying. Adding chia seeds amps up the omega-3 content and gives a silky texture.Serves 1

Ingredients¼ cup raw cashews¼ cup desiccated coconut1 Tbsp chia seeds1 cup water1 banana, pre-frozen in pieces (or just a banana)1 tsp finely ground coffee beans (optional but yum)

DirectionsPlace cashews, coconut, chia seeds and wa-ter into a blender and run for about 30 sec-onds. Giving this stage a bit of time allows the water to soak in to the nuts and seeds nicely, making for a creamier end result. Add banana and coffee then blend again until completely smooth.
