The use of traditional construction techniques and volume of wood used in the restoration elements represented 25% of the work involved. This included the consolidation of the facade facing the inner courtyard and the repair of cornices, walls, oors and roof. PEFC-certi ed timber was taken from several sawmills in the Sierra de la Demanda region including 400m 2  of Pine used in the ooring. The total cost of the restoration project was over 7 million. Obtaining project certi cation was made possible by the commitment of the University of Burgos and architect José Antonio Gil- Fournier Carazo. They saw PEFC Project Certi cation as a way of both promoting the project’s sustainability credentials and raising awareness of the importance of using certi ed timber. Undertaken by UTE Building between October 2007 and February 2009, this was one of the most important timber restoration projects undertaken in the Castilla y León region of Spain. After regular auditing by AENOR during the cosntruction period, Hospital de la Concepción became the second building project in the world to achieve PEFC Project Project certifcation
