About this workshop

2

The use of peer review as part of academic development in the contextof learning & teaching is fairly standard.

Less standard is it’s use in the contextof higher degree research supervision. Often “completions” are seen as evidence for quality supervision. Are they?

Workshop Overview

Page 5: Peer review of HDR Supervision

Discussion trigger:

Peer review of HDR Supervision faces challenges that are sometimes argued to be different to UG and PG course-based peer review because of the more intimate nature of the relationships, power dynamics, and length of candidature.

Trigger: Instead of “completions”,how might peer review be framed?

#1: HEA Framework(Academic centred)

Amended by Childs, 2016“Sources of evidence showing changeswith levels of promotion”(Figure 3, Making Evidence Count, 2013 p.4)

Page 9: Peer review of HDR Supervision

Example: “I’m a Lecturer Level B on contract. I’m seeking opportunities for secure employment. I’d like to develop evidence of growing my skills as an HDR Co-Supervisor. I’d like to ask a peer to review my work, but I’m unsure what to focus on given I’m not the Principal.”

What activities and evidencemight you encourage & review?

Page 10: Peer review of HDR Supervision

Example: “I’ve been developing a strategy to foster personal effectiveness in my candidates. I’d like to ask a peer to review my approach and I’ll use the review and my ongoing development as part of my application for promotion”.
